“Chae Yeon, do you remember this? Tofu soup was one of your favorite dishes” Mrs Lee asked her oblivious daughter as the maid accompanied the crazy girl out of her room to have lunch with her parents.
Chae Yeon said nothing, but starred blankly at the TV and giggled. But after a few seconds of starring at the screen, she screamed in horror and started crying as she saw what was on the screen. It was an interview with the transport Minister Kim Jong Kook. Chae Yeon cried loudly and hid her face with her arms. She crawled up into a ball and refused to stop screaming at the top of her voice.
As the maids tried to coax her, she secretly stole glances at the man who murdered her baby and her husband.
Mr and Mrs Lee quickly rushed to switch the TV off, afraid to aggravate the condition of her mental health.
As soon as the TV went blank, Chae Yeon stopped her screaming and calmed down. She soberly looked at the blank screen and kept silent. There were no more giggles from the crazy girl. The maids tried to cheer her up by bringing out that baby doll, but she had no reaction to it.
Lee Chae Yeon refused to talk, she refused to eat and she bit on her mother’s fingers when Mrs Lee tried to get her to eat her pills. After a night of struggle, they decided to take her back to the hospital.
As the black limousine entered the driveway of the hospital, Lee Chae Yeon suddenly became different. The previously dazed eyes of hers became teary, and the tensed up body of hers slowly loosen. She obediently allowed the doctors to inject her with the needles and she ate whatever the nurses gave her. The doctors in the psychiatric wards tried to understand her recent change in behavior, but they were constantly interrupted by her tears. For the many weeks that they have treated her, Lee Chae Yeon was always giggling. They could feel their heart wrench as her tears silently fell onto her cheeks and onto their arms.
“Why don’t we take a rest for the night?” the senior doctor kindly said to her.
To their surprise, Chae Yeon nodded her head. It was the first time in weeks she gave a normal response to them. Chae Yeon looked at the doctors with her teary eyes and lay down on the bed, waiting for the doctors to leave the ward.

“The patient in ward 6A is missing!”
As the whole hospital ran around in frenzy looking for the missing patient, Lee Chae Yeon stood at the car park watching her parents hurriedly get off the car. She waited for the driver to make a turn and approached the car as he finished parking it. The old man looked at her in shock as he anxiously got off the car.
“Missy, they are looking all over for you! What are you doing here?” Uncle Park asked as he walked closer towards her.
Without answering him, she pushed him aside and got into the driver’s seat. She locked the doors of the car and starred at the old man.
“Open up! Missy! Open the door” Uncle Park banged on the window screen.
Chae Yeon didn’t react to his bangs. She undid the hand brake and starred blankly towards the front. With one step on the accelerator, the car sped off and banged itself onto a curb. Uncle Park continued chasing after her, but Chae Yeon managed to reverse the car and drive away, out of the hospital.
“Seung Gi… our baby” she mumbled in tears. She looked at the signs on the road and confidently maneuvered the large black Rolls Royce as she followed the road signs
“West side Ferry terminal - Nami”
Chae Yeon quickly moved along the busy traffic of the morning, merging herself into the many lanes of busy Seoul. In the car, the morning news was on. Song Transports and the Minister of Transport were going to sign a ground breaking contract at the Ritz Carlton hotel. Chae Yeon’s eyes suddenly widen as she listened to the news.
“Transport Minister” she mumbled
Suddenly, she made a sharp U turn. The other road users were honking and screaming at her but she didn’t respond to them. With the extremely high powered engine, she drove dangerously to the hotel where she first saw her Seung Gi after 5 long years
In the surrounding area of the posh hotel, she blended in with the rest of the vehicles as she parked by the side waiting for the man she had wanted to see. The radio was playing the song “My Love” a soundtrack from the popular drama series “Love in Bali”
The melody was soothing and the lyrics were familiar. She hummed along the depressing song and remembered the night her baby was conceived. That night when they were both sitting on the balcony under the star filled sky. The radio was playing this song.
Chae Yeon placed her hand on her flat tummy. She blamed herself for not keeping her promise. She lost their baby. As a tear escaped out of her teary eyes, she saw the Minister of Transport exiting the hotel lobby. He was happily smiling and posing for pictures as his driver waited in the car parked in front of hers. Chae Yeon kept one leg on the accelerator and the other on the clutch.
The reporters and lobby staff were giving fictitious smiles to Kim Jong Kook as he waved goodbye to them and walked towards his car. The loud sound of the Rolls Royce’s engine roared as Chae Yeon floored the pedal of the accelerator. The black car drove straight towards the Minister and like a person without eyes, it knocked the giant monster and ran over it. From her rear view mirror, Chae Yeon could see the commotion she created. Men in black suit were trying to run after her car and pointed guns towards her direction.
Shots were fired but none of them managed to hit her. The body of the car was dented with bullets but that didn’t stop the car and its driver. She made a sharp and quick turn onto the busy road where there were many civilians, and because of that, the guards didn’t continue shooting. Driving against traffic and disregarding the rules of the road, she managed to merge into the main road once again, and was heading onto the highway.

She wasn’t sure what she was doing. It was close to freezing temperature in Nami Island. Wearing only a little cardigan, her lips were cracked and her whole body was shivering. For every few steps, she would fall on the slippery ground. It would give her bruises and cuts on her fair skin, but she kept on climbing. Using her hands, she pushed herself up from each fall, and as she reached the top of the cliff, she dusted the dirt and ice off her hands and legs, smearing the blood over her pale white skin.
It was painful, the blood and the cold had made the cuts turn blue. But to her, she didn’t feel a thing. The princess that once used to be so protected was left in the cold, injured not just physically but mentally as well.
She saw the familiar oak tree, the tree she said her vows under. She looked sadly at the now empty tree, the leaves were all gone.
“Seung Gi! I’m home!” she screamed to let her husband know she was back. A part of her knew that he was gone, but the other part where her heart lies, tells her that he didn’t leave her. As promised, he will be home at 5pm so that they could catch the bus to go shopping.
To shop for baby things.
There was no respond to her calls. There was not even an echo. All she could hear was the sounds of the sea. She walked beside the swing and looked into the ocean.
“Seung Gi!” she shouted again.
This time, she thought she heard a respond. It was as though he was calling her from behind.
“Seung Gi, where are you? I can’t see you!” she turned around frantically, searching for him
“Come out now. Seung Gi!.. Don’t hide anymore. I’m scared. Are you in the house?” She ran into the house, their home sweet home. It was the place she was the happiest in.
The house was dark, with only the dim winter sun shinning in from the windows. She walked passed the living room. On that couch, she used to cuddle in his arms as he read her the news from the morning paper. As he read, she would feed him her handmade snacks and dessert, and when they knew about the baby, it was the first place he talked about baby proofing it.
Chae Yeon ran into the bedroom and grabbled onto the sweater that she had knitted for him. To her, the sweater had his smell on it. The familiar scent of her man. Holding onto the sweater, she looked around in disappointment. Tears started to fall from her cheeks. The droplets of tears dropped onto her arms, causing pain to the cuts on her hands. She pouted her cute lips and mumbled nonsensical words to herself.
Her body was too weak to stand up straight, but she forced herself to put on his sweater. It made her unwell mind happier. Slowly, she limped out of the house, with the last hope that Seung Gi is waiting for her. She sat herself down on the cold wooden swing and cuddled her legs into the large sweater. It was warmer than before, but the wind from the ocean was unforgiving. The strong breeze blew against her face, causing the tears on her cheeks and the blood on her body to dry up.
With her closed eyes, she looked up at the darkening sky, picturing the beautiful sky she saw months ago, and the promise he made her.

“Seung Gi, promise me something”
“What is it My Love?”
“Promise me that if we cannot be together this life time, we will be together next life”
“If we can only be together next life time, there is no purpose living this one.”
“Isn’t it a waste? This life time… you are still so young”
“Even if today is the last day I live, I won’t be afraid, as long as next life, we can be together”

She opened her eyes and looked into the sea. Suddenly, she heard him talking to her.
“Nuna, don’t cry. Why are you so sad? I will always be waiting for you. Nuna, I’m here”
“Seung Gi I don’t see you. Seung Gi!”
“But I see you. My love… hush now, don’t cry. We will always be together”
“Seung Gi, we will be together” she softy said to herself.
Looking at the snow that was falling down again, she stretched out her hands and collected a little of it. Gently, she blew the snow into the ocean, watching it disappear as it fell lower and lower into the icy cold ocean.
She took one small step, closed her eyes, and jumped off the cliff.
No one was stopping her, she was on her way to meet her man.
The man who was waiting so patiently for her. In his arms, he carried their little baby.

“Nuna, I promise that I will only think of one woman”
“My Seung gi is the best”
“I will only think of Nuna” he declared to the world
“If love has no boundaries, I will only want to think of Seung Gi” she softly said
The Nuna opened her eyes and looked at the boy who had fallen asleep.
He was the only one, who could let her be so happy and carefree. If only he could grow up faster, she could give up everything she has to be with him.
She gently lifted her head up from his shoulders, and smiled at his sleeping face.
“Can I be the first woman to kiss you?” She giggled and gently planted a kiss on his cheek, before placing her head back on his shoulders.
That night in 2002, Lee Chae Yeon said a prayer for her beloved Dongseng. She wished upon a shinny twinkling star, that when Seung Gi grows up, he would fall in love, and be with the woman he loves forever.
