She had to leave early as she arranged for her and Kim Jong Kook to spend some quality time together volunteering at the pet shelter. Chae Yeon knew that she should do her part in trying to make this marriage work, since everyone wants it to. And to her surprise, Jong Kook agreed to spend the afternoon with her. Kim Jong Kook is a busy man and for the 3 years they were introduced, they hardly spent anytime together.
“Chae Yeon Hwaiting!” She said to herself as she pressed the button of the elevator up to the top floor of the building of transport. To her, this marriage needed a lot of effort and she was prepared to put in some determination in playing her role as a fiancée.
“Ms Lee! Mr Kim is very busy at the moment. Maybe I can serve you some tea first?” The secretary carefully stopped Chae Yeon from walking through the office doors of the Minister of Transport.
“He knows I’m coming. Please let him know I have arrived” Chae Yeon politely instructed the girl and took out her phone to read her messages.
“Chae Yeon Nuna, your favorite ballet group is playing at the arts theatre next month. The hospital gave us some tickets. I’ll keep them for you. – Seung Gi”
Chae Yeon smiled at her phone and replied him.
“I will be there ^_^ send Granny my love. You too” she typed in and sent the message.
“Come in” Jong Kook suddenly said, which gave Chae Yeon a shock. She gently stood up and followed him into his office as he closed the door behind them.
“So what are we doing today?” He asked while looking at his computer and clicking on his email.
“I was thinking we could volunteer at the pet shelter. They are moving to their new location and need help packing” Chae Yeon said happily as she sat down across him.
“Pet shelter? Like homes for dogs and cats?” Jong Kook looked at her with a weird expression on his face.
“Yup.. mostly abandoned pets” Chae Yeon tried to keep her enthusiasm up
“What’s the point. They should just kill all of them and eat them. What a waste of resources” Jong Kook continued clicking on his computer.
“No! Dogs are not meant to be eaten!” Chae Yeon could not imagine that her fiancé just said those words
“You live in your princess world. Puppies grow up and become dogs and they are delicious. “ Kim Jong Kook said and crushed Chae Yeon’s world of cute puppies and kittens.
“I know they grow old but they are not meant to be eaten!” Chae Yeon stood up fuming mad.
“Why are you so angry? Its not like I’m asking you to eat them with me. Find something else to do. I’m not going to cancel my appointments to go to some stupid pet shelter.” He opened a few files to put his signature down.
“I promised them I’ll go and if you are so busy, you can just stay here. Good bye” Chae Yeon turned around and walked away.
“We’ll meet up another day then.” Jong Kook said and picked up his phone to make a business call.
Chae Yeon controlled her tears till she reached the elevator. As soon as the doors closed, her tears fell down her cheeks. She hated this fiancé of hers. He never knows how to dote on her, he never knows when to give in. She knew she wasn’t a demanding girlfriend. She just wanted to spend sometime with him. Was it that difficult?
She sat in her chauffeured driven car as the driver took her on a spin around Seoul .The poor old uncle had no idea where she wanted to go. He drove her up and down the long HanGang river, hoping that she would stop crying and decide on a destination. Recently, he has seen a lot of his young mistress tears. This bright and sunshine little missy was always unhappy after a meeting with her fiancée. An experience old man like him knew that Chae Yeon was not happy with this marriage. But what could he do? He was nothing but a chauffer
“Uncle, to the pet shelter please” Chae Yeon wiped her tears away and got hold of herself. That was enough tears for that man. He is not worth it. She meddled with her phone again, reading her many unread messages.
“Get a gift for Jong Kook. His birthday is coming soon - Daddy”
“A new set of Mother of pearls necklace just came in from Paris. We have to go see them. I got us a private viewing tomorrow. You are coming right? - Jackie”
“The book -Arthritis in traditional medication- is available for pick up at your convenience – Borders bookstore”
“Your love has been accepted by Granny and Me. You have twice the dosage of love from me. LOVE LOVE - Seung Gi”
Chae Yeon giggled at the message from Seung Gi. He is still so sweet. Before he left for London, he used to type in kisses as well. She held her phone close to her heart and smiled, thinking of him. All the sadness and unhappiness earlier just seemed to have disappeared.
“Missy, its great to see you smile again” the chauffer said to her as he pulled up in front of the run down facility of the pet shelter.
“Uncle, do you remember Seung Gi?” Chae Yeon asked him
“Seung Gi? That little boy of your Nanny’s?” he asked.
“He’s back and he’s no longer a little boy” Chae Yeon said happily to him.
“Its been so long. How is he?” the old uncle recalled how Seung Gi would used to pester him to put on the safety seat belt. Back then, wearing seatbelts were not a requirement but the little boy knew the importance of it.
“He is doing great. Seung Gi’s a doctor with the Seoul Hospital. He is still so smart and uncle, he is very manly now” Chae Yeon blabbered to her chauffer happily.
She bid farewell and hop off the car to walk through the gates of the pet shelter. She stopped by her favorite golden retriever and gave the dog a smile. She had so baldy wanted to take this half blind dog home with her, but her parents never allowed. She wanted to convince Jong Kook to let her keep the dog after they get married but from the looks of it, she better not.
“Chae Yeon shi?” Andy, the Vet of the shelter tapped her on her back.
“Oh hello” Chae Yeon politely greeted him back.
“Are you alone?” he asked. She had told him that she would be coming with her fiancé.
“Yes, Jong Kook… something came up.” Chae Yeon smiled to cover up the sadness in her.
“Well my college buddy is here to volunteer as well. Perhaps you can partner him and show him around the place? He is a doctor but not a trained Vet” Andy asked as he looked around to find his friend.
“Sure” Chae Yeon said as she waved goodbye to the golden retriever.
She followed Andy into the office and saw her Seung Gi sitting on the couch reading a magazine. She signaled to Andy to keep quiet as she sneaked up behind Seung Gi and closed his eyes with her hands.
“Who…” Seung Gi touched Chae Yeon’s hands and grabbed it in his fist.
“Guess” Chae yeon said while giggling
“Nuna?” Seung Gi held her hand and turned around to give her a big smile.
“You guys know each other?” Andy looked at them with amusement.
“He is the dongseng I always tell you about” Chae Yeon said and sat herself beside Seung Gi
“So she’s the Nuna you…” Andy stopped himself from completing his sentence. Andy knows how obsessed his college buddy is over a beautiful Nuna. He never expected the world to be this small

“Nuna, let me buy you dinner” Seung Gi said to Chae Yeon after they finished their volunteer work.
“Okay” Chae Yeon quietly walked behind Seung Gi. She feels very weird about this feeling she has for her little Seung Gi. She knows she wasn’t supposed to treat him like a man but she does, and everything about him seems perfect to her. She playfully walked behind him on his shadow until Seung Gi suddenly stopped walking and turned around.
“Nuna, why are you walking behind me?” Seung Gi turned around and held her arms in his hands.
Chae Yeon looked at him speechless, afraid that he could read her mind and find out that her mind was filled with him.
“What’s wrong?” He looked at her troubled face.
“I…” Chae Yeon didn’t know what to say. How could she tell him that she is secretly having a crush on him.
“Sir would you like to buy a rose for your girlfriend?” A young girl came up to Seung Gi with the basket of flowers.
Seung Gi smiled at the little girl and gave her a note. He selected a red rose and took it out of the basket
“Thank you Sir” the little girl smiled happily and skipped away.
“Nuna you were saying something?” Seung Gi looked at Chae Yeon closely. His Nuna looked unwell.
“I’m just hungry” Chae Yeon let out a smile and continued walking.
“Lets get going then, there’s this wonderful fried chicken one block down” Seung Gi passed her the rose and gave her his sweetest smile
“The rose.. is for me?” Chae Yeon asked innocently
“Yes. Men don’t usually buy roses for themselves” Seung Gi said shyly and looked down on the ground.
“Thank you” Chae Yeon looked up at him and felt her heart flutter.
That night, the two darlings walked along the HanGang river. It was a slow slow stroll, together with the many couples in love. Seung Gi held Chae Yeon’s hands firmly and she rested her hands in his gently. It was like 5 years ago, except that they no longer look like siblings, but lovers. None of them spoke about how inappropriate it might seem, none of them wanted to. They looked into the river and saw their happy reflection. If they could stay like that forever, they both secretly wished that tomorrow never comes.

(Days later In Granny’s house)
“Yeonie how is your fiancé? Do you think he would like to join us for dinner?” Granny asked Chae Yeon, who was helping her peel carrots
Chae Yeon’s hand stopped moving the moment she heard the mention of her fiancé.
“I don’t think he has time” she said. In her heart, she knew that he would not want to come here. Like her parents, he looks down on the poor people and would never step foot into Jung gu.
“As his wife, you must understand your husband’s needs. Find out what he likes to eat and prepare them for him. After coming home from a hard day’s of work, it would be nice to have his favorite food ready on the table” Granny said to her.
“He doesn’t like to eat home cooked meals. He only likes French and Italian food and I don’t know and don’t want to know how to make them” Chae Yeon said in a unhappy tone. She hated everything about Kim Jong Kook. Since the dog meat quarrel they had, she refused to have a meal alone with him.
“If you know he likes French and Italian food, you should learn how to make them. Or find out for him where serves the best food. Yeonie, why do you seem to be uninterested in pleasing your husband?” Granny questioned with a worried look.
“He does not need to be pleased. He is perfectly happy as he is. Really. Nanny, don’t worry. Should I add two or three spoons of chili in the stew? Can Seung Gi still take spicy food since he came back from London?” Chae Yeon asked her Nanny.
“Three. He still likes things spicy” Nanny answered with a frown.
“Three it is” Chae Yeon carefully added three spoons of chili powder into the boiling stew, thinking that Seung Gi would be thrilled to have his favorite meat stew ready when he gets home from the hospital.
Granny looked at her Yeonie and felt that something was not right. Was her Yeonie having problems with her fiancé? Just when she thought that everything was going well for her little girl, she seems to have noticed that Chae Yeon does not care for her future husband.
Dinner started and ended with no further mentioned of Kim Jong Kook. Granny looked at Seung Gi and Chae Yeon happily talking and eating and felt that something was just not right. Chae Yeon was peeling the skin off a sweet potato for Seung Gi and in return, he was making rice balls in the shape of hearts for his Nuna.
“I want a star shape rice ball” Chae Yeon giggled at the heart shaped rice ball
“I can make a diamond shape rice ball as well, if you want” Seung Gi dotingly said to her.
“Be respectful Seung Gi. Chae Yeon is your Nuna. And stop playing with your food” Granny scolded them.
Chae Yeon looked at her Nanny’s displeased face and placed the sweet potato on Seung Gi’s plate, before stuffing the heart shaped rice ball in her mouth and chewed on it quietly.
Seung Gi looked at her cute cheeks filled with rice and smiled to himself, before quickly finishing the food on his plate before his Granny screams at him again.
After dinner, Chae Yeon lay on his bed looking at pictures of his graduation.
“Have you called for your driver?” Seung Gi walked out of the bathroom
“I’ve called. He is on his way” Chae Yeon looked at up him, who was trying to dry his head with his towel.
“I have something for you” Seung Gi said and put his towel down, leaving his hair messy, making him look extra cute and boyish.
“What is it?” Chae Yeon excitedly sat up and crawled closer to Seung Gi who sat right beside the bedside table.
“Its something small I bought in Europe” Seung Gi took out the pretty little box and presented it to Chae Yeon. She took it excitedly and opened it. A shinny necklace which had a unique design sparkled at her. Tears started to form in her eyes as she looked at him and then at the necklace. The necklace didn’t have the biggest diamond, it wasn’t the thickest gold, but it was unique and extra special to her. It was a necklace from her Seung Gi.
“What’s wrong? What have I done? Did I make you upset?” Seung Gi got worried and anxiously asked her.
Chae Yeon didn’t answer him but kept shaking her head.
“Nuna, please don’t cry” Seung Gi frowned and held her shoulders to make her look at him. He didn’t know why she was crying. Was his nuna upset about something? Did his gift reminded her of something unhappy? He kept having all sorts of imagination and finally, he pulled her into his arms and held her tightly.
“Thank You” Chae Yeon finally said as she got hold of herself and stopped crying.
“My silly Nuna” Seung Gi laughed and kissed her head.
“I am silly” Chae Yeon giggled with her tears and smiled at him.
“Can I put it on for you?” Seung Gi looked into her eyes and asked
A smile from her and he unhooked the necklace to place it around her neck.
“I won’t take it off” Chae Yeon suddenly said, which surprised him
“You are so precious, you know that?” Seung Gi used his hand to push her hair away from her face, to reveal her small cute face which he loved so much.
Chae Yeon didn’t say a thing, but she placed her hands on his and held onto his hand. She saw through his eyes that there was love and desire for her, but she also saw the sadness within it. The sadness that any love they both have for each other, must always remain forbidden and hidden.
