Although she would have liked to have seen him again, there hadn’t been time. She had been kept busy with last-minute preparations for the opening of the restaurant. Her chance came though as she was sitting by one of the tables outside the restaurant, trying to cool off with a glass of ice cold tea. She was staring into space trying to figure out the budget when she saw him across the street. She started to call him but stopped when she noticed someone with him. They looked like they were arguing and she realized that he was breaking up with the girl. She knew she should have felt sorry for the poor girl but somehow she couldn’t find it in her heart to do so. The girl suddenly gave him a loud slap and she flinched as if she was the one who got struck. It was at that exact moment that he looked across the street and their eyes met.
For her, it was like the intervening years never were. She couldn’t breathe. Why couldn’t the years have been cruel to him? How come he still looked good enough to eat? How can one person have that much power over another? “Oh no! He’s coming over!” she thought, wanting to hide yet unable to move. “Stop it!” she admonished herself. “You’re a mature woman now. Don’t let him see how much he still affects you!”
He stopped when he was about a foot away from her.
“Say something!” she told herself.

He was having another of his lousy days. He was breaking up with…uh…who was she again? Candy? He sighed. He knew he shouldn’t have dated her. She didn’t know the rules. She wasn’t supposed to make a scene. Her slap caught him by surprise. He rubbed his stinging cheek and was about to give her a piece of his mind when he looked across the street and saw her.
Even from this distance he could see the way her eyes widened. He thought he was prepared for whatever changes that the last three years might have made to her but he found that he wasn’t. Had she always been that beautiful? Somehow his feet had gotten a mind of their own because they were suddenly bringing him closer and closer to her. He didn’t even realize that Candy was left standing there in mortification. She could only look at his retreating back and do nothing but stalk off in annoyance.
He stopped when he was about a foot away from her.
“Say something!” he told himself.
