Chapter 39

how do you spell tension?

Ximen looked at the clock by the fireplace. It was already 7PM. Time to prepare dinner. It had started to rain heavily and the room had gone cold so he lit the fireplace. He went to the kitchen and opened the fridge. He was considering his options when he thought he heard a sound from outside. It sounded a lot like knocking.

He frowned. Could it be Mei Zhou? But then he hadn’t heard a car drive up and he couldn’t imagine his friend walking so he discounted the possibility. Who would be foolish enough to brave a trek up here in this weather and at this time of night? He walked quickly to the door and opened it.

“Xiao You?” he nearly had a heart attack. What was she doing here?

He must have just stood there staring at her for the longest time because she rolled her eyes at him and said “I know you’re probably expecting one of your mei meis but aren’t you going to invite me in?”

Ximen jumped at her voice and flushed at her words. “Sorry…come in…” and moved quickly to the side to let her in.

Xiao You bit her lip. She was dripping wet and her feet hurt. She had no idea how long she’d walked under the heavy rain and she was cold. She probably looked like a drowned rat too. She didn’t want to trek water all over the floor so she just stood there by the side of the door after Ximen had closed it.

“Uhm…could I borrow some towels please.” she asked politely, suddenly unsure of her welcome, since he just stood there beside her, still staring.

“Oh! Of course…” He came out of his trance and hurriedly went inside one of the rooms. “Idiot!” he muttered to himself as he rummaged through the closet for towels. He couldn’t believe he just stood there and stared at her when she was obviously cold.

He came out of the room bearing two large fluffy towels. “Here…these are all I could…” the words died on his lips. His feet suddenly seemed to have grown roots. She had taken off her jacket and he was treated to a view of Xiao You’s wet shirt molded snugly to her body. “When had she developed those curves?” Ximen thought wildly. If there had been an earthquake he couldn’t have moved to save his life. Did he mention that her shirt was white? Well, it was! And it had become transparent from having been soaked by the rain, giving him a peek at what lay beneath. He swallowed. Was that lace he could just make out from under the shirt? The thought was enough to make him hyperventilate.

Xiao You frowned at Ximen’s strange behavior. He seemed to have gone into a trance, the towels forgotten in his hands. What was he staring at so intently? She followed his gaze and looked down.

“You pervert!” she shouted when she realized what it was he was staring at. She’d forgotten she’d worn a white shirt and she blushed furiously at seeing herself so revealed. She quickly marched up to him and snatched one of the towels, turned her back and put it around her shoulders.

Ximen knew he should apologize. He really tried to. But he couldn’t seem to make his mouth cooperate. It was probably a good thing he couldn’t move otherwise he would have stepped on his jaw, which he felt had just fallen on the floor. Somewhere. “Sweet Lord!” he thought, mentally asking forgiveness for taking His name in vain. His mei meis had nothing on her! She had looked like one of those sexy lingerie models he and Mei Zhou used to drool over when they were in high school. Who’d have thought?

Xiao You was muttering expletives at Ximen under her breath as she adjusted the towel around her shoulders, still facing away from him. She couldn’t believe he just stared at her so boldly as you please and didn’t have the decency to apologize even after she’d caught him! She looked down at herself once again and was glad she’d worn one of her Victoria’s Secret purchases. Of course, that thought should have been the least of her concerns.

She gave a loud sigh.

The truth was, she was angry more at herself than at him. For feeling just a tad flattered at the look on his face. Okay…make that hugely flattered!

“Stupid Xiao You!” she thought to herself as she turned around again.

They looked at each other, just two feet of space between them. Ximen noted that she’d also taken off her sneakers and socks and her bare feet were peeking out from under her jeans. Jeans which, he observed idly, had also become quite molded to her hips, thighs and legs.

“Ximen, you pig!!!” he berated himself for having noticed thar fact. It was, after all, nothing he hadn’t seen before. He knew that. He really did. So he tried to focus on something else and found himself looking at her feet again. Now, were there magazines devoted entirely to feet, he thought, hers would be worthy of a centerfold spread.

“Damn!” Since when had he developed a foot fetish? The room suddenly seemed to have grown warmer. He would have loosened his collar...if he had one that is.

“Do you mind?” she snapped at him as she curled her toes in because his continued staring was starting to get under her skin.

He laughed!

Xiao You couldn’t believe that the stupid man had the nerve to laugh! She wanted to hit him but she didn’t have anything to hit him with!

“Sorry…” he apologized as he fought to control his laughter. In truth, he had no idea why he was laughing. There wasn’t anything remotely funny about the situation, but he just had to laugh or he’d combust! He needed an outlet for the feelings rioting inside him because the tension inside the room had started to get to him. BIG time.

His laugh did somehow diffuse the tension in the room and Xiao You found herself smiling helplessly.

“Stupid git!” she thought without heat. “Stop laughing you loon!” she scolded him aloud.

He just continued to laugh.

“Uhm…would you like to use the bathroom?” he finally asked when he’d gotten control of himself.

“Yes please.” Xiao You was grateful for the offer. She was trying hard not to let him see that she had started to shiver. Even the heat from the fireplace didn’t seem enough to warm her.

Ximen saw the shiver she had tried to hide and his mirth instantly turned to concern.

“God, Xiao You, I’m so sorry. I should have made you go to the bathroom sooner…” he mumbled as he walked towards her. He then used the remaining towel in his hands to dry, first her face, and then her hair.

The move caught her by surprise and she could only stand there, holding on to the towel on her shoulders, and wait for him to finish.

The movements of his hand stilled when he noticed her staring up at him and he found his gaze zeroing in on the droplet of water that was slowly rolling its way down…

from her hair…

to her forehead…

down her nose…

landing on her lips…

her parted lips.

Ximen swallowed convulsively.

“Oh dear lord…” was all his mind had been capable of...

as Xiao You’s tongue darted out unconsciously...

...to lick the moisture off.

Ximen groaned.

Just like that...

the tension in the room was back with a vengeance.
