Mei Zhou was worried. Ximen had not been answering his cell phone. He knew because he’d tried calling him up every 30 minutes since he left the restaurant in a hurry. “That idiot!” he thought in exasperation. “Come on, come on, answer your phone.”
“The number you dialed is either unattended or out of reach.” The same recording he had listened to for the past 5 hours came on again.
“Dammit Ximen! Where the hell are you?” Mei Zhou muttered to himself. He had called his office but his secretary said Ximen had not come back from his lunch. His car was still outside the restaurant, so that meant he had taken a walk. But where?
Mei Zhou’s musings was broken by the shrill ring of his cell phone.
“Ximen, where the f**k have you been?”
“Out. What’s with the greeting?” Ximen’s voice sounded strange.
“I’ve been calling you all day. I was getting worried!” Mei Zhou nearly shouted.
“Worried about me? But why?” Ximen asked.
“Don’t give me that bulls**t! You and I both know you’re not ok.” Mei Zhou wanted to strangle his friend for acting like he didn’t care.
“Why shouldn’t I be?” Ximen asked belligerently.
“Four words! Lei and Xiao You!” Mei Zhou bit out.
Silence.
“Look, you don’t have to pretend with me. We’ve known each other for so long so give me some credit ok? I’ve known for a long time that you’ve been thinking of her all these years.”
More silence.
“Maybe it was a misunderstanding. You shouldn’t jump to conclusions. Lei is probably just helping her, you know how he is…” Mei Zhou knew he was clutching at straws, but he was getting more and more worried over his friend’s continued silence.
“Is that all?” Ximen finally asked in a cold voice.
“Ximen…” For once, Mei Zhou was at a loss for words.
“You. Don’t. Need. To. Worry.” Ximen enunciated each word separately. “Now if you have nothing more to say I have to get back to work. I’ve wasted a whole afternoon as it is.”
Mei Zhou was still trying to think of a word to say when he heard the sound of the dial tone on the other end. He sighed. “What the hell were you thinking of Lei?” he thought as he shook his head. Looks like F4 ‘s friendship will be going through the wringer again.
