Chapter 8

the plan.

A/N: This chapter is dedicated to those of you who were probably ready to burn me at the nearest stake for making Lei part of another triangle. I was planning to include the history of the association between Lei & XY in this chapter but it just wouldn't fit in. Anyway, you'll all see in the succeeding chapters. Hope you like this.

“I think we have a problem…” Lei began.

“Problem?” Xiao You asked as Lei sat next to her on the bench, preoccupied with the papers before her. She had asked him to meet her at the restaurant they were opening for some last minute physical arrangements.

“Yes. I don’t know what you told Shan Cai but she thinks you and I are...” Lei paused until Xiao You looked up before putting his two forefingers together in explanation.

“What?! Who gave them that idea?” Xiao You’s surprise was evident.

“Well, apparently, you did.” Lei supplied.

“I did? But…I just told her you were opening a restaurant and that I will be managing it. How could she think…” Xiao You shook her head in exasperation. “Oh God! She asked me where I was staying and must have misunderstood.”

Lei nodded. “And Ah Si had just warned me against trifling with your affections.”

Xiao You laughed. “Well, now that you mention it…are your intentions to me pure?” She teased him.

“It’s not funny. Ah Si was all set to kick my butt..” but Lei was smiling too.

“Does Mei Zhou and Ximen know?” she asked.

“I’m not sure. I tried to divert their attention but who knows what Ah Si told them when I left.” He shrugged.

Xiao You thought about it. Although she had asked Lei to help her win Ximen’s heart, this wasn’t exactly what she had in mind. “Would Ximen care if he finds out I’m with Lei now? Would he try to get me back?” she asked herself. “Yeah right! He’ll probably thank Lei for finally getting me out of his hair…” she grimaced. “No! I have to believe there’s a chance!” she said out loud, mentally bracing herself for the battle ahead.

“What?” Lei asked curiously.

“Nothing….I was just wondering what Ximen would think if he thought you and I were together now.”

“Well there’s just one way to find out…” Lei thought to himself absently.

Xiao You looked at Lei for a moment then asked tentatively “Lei…?”

He groaned. He knew what was coming. “Yes?”

“Will you….” She began.

“Absolutely not.” He said emphatically.

“Oh but…you haven’t even heard what I was going to ask yet…” she pouted.

Lei looked at Xiao You and laughed. “Stop pouting at me because it’s not gonna work.”

She considered his words and changed tactics. “But Lei…you said you were going to help me…” making her voice wobble a bit. A solitary tear looked like it was about to make its way down her cheek.

Lei groaned aloud. “When did you become such a good actress?”

Xiao You had to laugh at that. “I learned from the best.” She teased him.

He sighed. “You’re scary, you know that?”

“Thank you.” She answered primly.

This time Lei laughed out loud. “Fine. What is it you want me to do?”

“Act out the part of my boyfriend.” She told him.

“What?” he pretended indignation.

“Hey! I didn’t think you’d find that so distasteful.” Xiao You complained.

“It’s not that…I’m just worried about my health.” Lei joked, half seriously.

Xiao You sighed. She knew she was being unfair to Lei. Surely he wouldn’t want to get involved in another love triangle. “Of course, it’s a triangle only if Ximen loved her…” she lamented to herself, out loud she said “I’m sorry Lei….I know I’m being selfish again…I just want to be with him so bad that just the idea of him possibly being jealous…” she trailed off.

She looked so dejected that Lei could feel himself weakening. He knew he was probably going to regret this but he found himself saying “Fine…I’ll do what you want…” Inwardly though, he was shaking his head at his folly.. “Maybe I have a death wish…” he mused. That could explain his willingness to pit himself against Shan Cai and Ah Si….not to mention Ximen, if that git ever realizes what he had just let go.

“You will?” The smile she gave him was so brilliant, Lei had to wonder anew how Ximen found the strength to reject Xiao You in the first place. She was really beautiful when she smiled. “Thanks. You’re a really good friend.” She added.

“Yeah? Well, if Ximen and Ah Si mess up my face for this, you’ll owe me big time.” He warned.

She laughed. “I’ll be sure to kiss it better then.”

“Promises, promises…”

They both grinned at each other and Xiao You was once again struck by how wonderful Lei was. She wished she could do something to repay him for all his kindness, so she said the first thing that came to her mind.

“I love you, Ge ” she whispered as she leaned her head on his shoulder.

“I love you too.” He whispered back as he too leaned his head to rest on hers.

A/N2: I read somewhere that Ge meant brother but of course I could be wrong so forgive me if I used the term incorrectly. Anyway, that’s what I meant. I’ve not been reading XY/XM FF lately because it might inadvertently affect the way I write the story so similarities with other stories are unintended. I hope you all bear with me over the slow updates as I endeavor to finish this because I do so want to do justice to this couple’s story. Thanks again to those who have not only taken the time to read my story but have also left comments and are waiting patiently for my updates. Oh and last time I checked, I still don’t own any of the characters of MG (much to my regret), nor those of HYD on which the series was based.
