She didn’t even flinch for ten good seconds. She saw him smile awkwardly, saw his eyes trying to examine her reaction for this sudden “cohabiting again” thing. Not knowing what to say, not knowing anything at all, her mind completely went blank the moment she laid his eyes on him. Though she really wanted to ignore his existence, she just had to address him or even inquire what on earth brought him to the Xu Residence, again. Recovering from her initial shock, she went straight to her mother’s chair and practically dragged her to the kitchen
“MA?!!!!!!!!!!!” Her question went out a lot more rude than it was intended to be
“What?” Her mother answered innocently
“What do you mean WHAT?” She pointed her finger to the dining table where the soldier silently eats his dinner
“His...uhm..” She stuttered while secretly crossing her fingers
“His toilet water pipes are leaking!...” Xu Mama faked an excuse. Arguing with Barbie couldn’t be so easy after all
“Water Pipes?” She said with a mocking tone palpable in her voice
She wanted to burst out her ultimate curse. Leaking Water Pipes? What the heck? Plumbers are everywhere, if that would make sense. Can’t he just rent another place? Can’t he just stay out of her life? Not that she was overreacting and all but she was practically yelling her lungs out just to purposely let Vic hear their mother-daughter war in the kitchen. Maybe his conscience will lead him into moving out of their house to stop further petty fights, she thought. But damn that man he became so thick-skinned and what’s even worse is that he acted like he wasn’t the primary cause of the argument. He looked like the meal prepared by Xu Mama delighted him like crazy!
“Ma, I’m dating Alan!”
If Barbie thought that telling her mother about her relationship with Alan will solve things easily, then she was absolutely and painstakingly wrong
“So?”
“So he can’t live here Ma!..Alan will get the wrong idea..” She continued protesting
“Just admit that you’re unsure of your feelings!” She equalled her daughter’s stubbornness
“Why are you doing this Ma? Do you really want to see me miserable again?..”She bowed her head down as her tone lowered incredibly
“I want you to be happy.”
Barbie shook her head slowly as she whispered “If being happy means risking my heart again..then I don’t want to be happy anymore..”
“You’re being selfish, ShanShan..It took so much courage for him to step foot in this house again. Can’t you give him another chance?..”
“I hate him Ma! I hate him for breaking my heart..I hate him for his false promises!..I hate him when he looks at me like he wanted me again in his life! I hate him when he tries to win me back and I especially hate him more because I don’t have the courage to hate him enough at all!..”Her eyes were misty as she shouted out all her frustrations
Barbie ran to her bedroom completely ignoring the shocked expression in her mother’s face. Sighing deeply, Xu Mama went back to the dining lounge where the soldier was sitting silently.
“Ma..I think I should just move out..”
“No..You’re staying..Didn’t you just say that you can’t afford to lose?”
“It’s entirely my fault..I can’t prevent her from liking someone else..”
“And Barbie can’t prevent you from loving her still, right?” She tried consoling the man
Vic finally gave out a a small smile “Ma, sometimes I wonder why you love me this much..knowing I was the one who ruined everything..”
“Sweet talking should be for Barbie..not me..” She joked.
“I’ll talk to her soon, Ma.” He declared
