He didn’t even care if he looked dumb. Wearing that completely stupefying yellow star costume, whatever he was trying to prove to Barbie, he was surely despondent to prove it. The enormous size of the star made him looked like he was endorsing a famous amusement park. The upper half of his body was covered with the star and he wore high socks to heighten up the cheesy mood. He would even pass as the most gorgeous mascot in town. He hoped against all kinds of hopes that she would agree to talk to him, at least be friends first .
He was a star. A falling star.
“Barbie..Barbie!” He called out on her window. His voice definitely alarmed the neighborhood
As if on cue, the woman peeked on her glass window bearing an astounded look in her eyes. She never thought it would get this far. Is dating Alan not enough to make Vic feel that she’s not interested to be hurt anymore?
If only you could hear me
Shout your name
If only you could feel
My love again
The stars in the sky will
Never be the same
If only you were here
And then he started singing. She smiled a bit. Of course she was moved by cute act, but she can’t be moved too much, she reminded herself.
“Will you climb up my window?..Are we playing Romeo and Juliet here?”She asked jokingly
“Will you talk to me if I climb up?” He asked daringly
“I guess I can’t help it..but just use the stairs..it’s dangerous to try..”Concern creeping from her voice
Barbie knew she had to talk to him to fix things once and for all. What she wasn’t aware of was that she had to do it earlier than she expected. When she knew he moved back to her house, she knew he was trying to enter her life again. Whether she liked it or not, it was something that would never be easy for her to figure out.
He wanted to scream his joyfulness. Barbie agreed to talk to him. Maybe it was his lucky day afterall. Like a thunder chasing it’s victim, he quickly made his way and ran through the house before she could even think of changing her mind. Finally reaching the room, he turned the doorknob carrying all the hopes and prayers he kept for this moment to last..a little longer than forever.
“Hey..”He was unsure of what to do
Barbie bit her lips before turning her back to face him. It took almost every courage in her system to say the words her heart was preventing her to say.
“Zai..I appreciate your efforts and everything. I know you’ve sacrificed a lot for me. But sometimes you just have to give up the person that you love, not because you don’t want them anymore..but because you’ll realize you’re not supposed to hold on to them for too long..”
To where her statement is leading, he solemnly swore to God he didn’t want to know.
“When I lost you, I forced myself to learn how to stop the urge of wanting something I’m not supposed to have..” Barbie continued
She did a good job hiding her tears. It was so good that it left him crying without shame.
“I didn’t know it was selfish of me to try winning you back..” He bowed his head down wiping his tears
He hated it when Barbie felt hurt and yet ironically he brought too much of it to her to the point it was hard for him to believe it himself.
“Zai, I already agreed to give Alan a chance..to give myself a chance to be happy again..”
If Barbie was trying to increase Vic’s burden, with the mention of Alan’s name, then she deserved a congratulatory award. Barbie was so sincere with her statements which made Vic drown himself into agony.
“I’m sorry..If you feel that I always get in the way of your happiness..But If I would have one wish now, I would love to go back to that moment when I first held your hand.. because until now.. I regret not telling you,that at that moment, I planned to hold onto you until time allows me to... ”
He realized how he must’ve ruined Barbie’s life when he left. He was the one who pushed her away. Pushed her until he lost her for good.
“I promised myself that this time I would never let you go..but I’m willing to break it..” He continued
“Are you telling me you’re admitting defeat?..”
“What can I do?.. I was always a loser when it comes to you..” His shoulders merely shrugging as tears where falling unendingly
“Don’t say that..”She shook her head slightly blaming herself from making the situation harder than it already was
Vic slowly fumbled the pink notebook from his costume's pocket. He reached for her hand and returned it to her almost regretting it after a second.
“I have a favor to ask..Please give this to Alan..Tell him to treasure you, to take care of you and to love you...more than I did before..”
She was cruel and she hated it. For the past month, Vic knew nothing , did nothing and tried nothing but to win her heart again.
Slowly, Vic turned his back on her and started walking away. He didn’t want to give himself a chance to hesitate at all. He didn’t imagine it to be like this. He thought Barbie will accept her again and then he will be able to hug her again like the old times. He thought he was better than Alan. It was wishful thinking on his part, he thought. Barbie left her with no choice but to let go. A step closer to the door, he stopped his hand from reaching the doorknob. He would die if he wouldn’t say it.
“I love you , Barbie Xu..”
Then he walked away, this time, it’s for real.
