Chapter 2

Moving In

“When did they say they were coming?” Leila asked as she ate her cereal. It was moving day for Leila and Tavia. They had already packed all their stuff into cardboard boxes, which were scattered all over the apartment.

Tavia checked her watch. “They should’ve been here half an hour ago.”

Leila groaned. “God, they are so unreliable. Why did we even bother asking them for help? You and I could probably move everything ourselves. Actually, speaking of which, I have a question for you.”

“Mmhmm?” Tavia mumbled as she moved some boxes around.

“Do you even want to move in with Ron and Raymond?”

“It’s probably going to be weird at first, but I think we’ll get used to it,” Tavia replied.

“You didn’t answer my question,” Leila pointed out.

“I don’t care where I live, as long as I have a roof over my head,” Tavia said, plopping down on the sofa. Just then, there was a knock on the door. Leila put the empty bowl into the kitchen sink and ran to open the door.

“Sorry we’re late,” that was the first thing Ron said when Leila opened the door. “Raymond couldn’t wake up. He spent the entire night on the PlayStation.”

“You guys have a PlayStation?” Leila asked, brightening up. “How come you never told me?”

“Because we know you’re crazy about video games. If you knew, you’ll always come over and play on it. We’ll never get you to leave,” Raymond replied, entering the apartment with Ron following close behind. They looked at all the boxes they had to carry.

“Don’t worry guys. I recruited another person to help us move,” Tavia said, noticing the distressed looks on their faces.

“Hey, why is the door open?” The four of them heard a voice coming from the doorway. Raymond and Ron turned around to see who the voice belonged to. Raymond’s jaw dropped and his heart sped up when he saw a very pretty girl with her shoulder-length hair tied into a ponytail.

“Speak of the devil. I was just talking about you, Michelle,” Tavia greeted as she got up from the sofa.

“Good things, I hope,” Michelle smiled, which caused Raymond’s heart to beat even faster. He stood there frozen as he continued to admire Michelle’s beauty.

“Psst, Raymond. Snap out of it,” Ron nudged Raymond on the shoulder.

“Wow,” Raymond muttered under his breath as he continued to stare at Michelle. Ron looked at Raymond and then at Michelle, wondering why Raymond was acting like such an idiot.

“Oh, I totally forgot. Introductions,” Tavia smacked her forehead. “You know Leila. These two dudes here are Raymond and Ron. This is Michelle, my partner.”

“Nice to meet you,” Michelle flashed another smile, this time directly at Raymond. He thought he was going to die of happiness.

“N-nice to meet you,” Raymond stuttered, extending his hand.

“Are you okay, Raymond?” Michelle asked, shaking his hand.

“I-I’m fine,” Raymond said quickly, turning slightly red. “I’m going to start moving the boxes.” He quickly walked away.

“Don’t mind him. He didn’t really get much sleep last night,” Ron said. “Nice to meet you, Michelle.”

“Likewise,” Michelle replied.

“Okay, now that the introductions are over, let’s start moving,” Tavia said, clapping her hands to get everybody’s attention.

A couple of hours and many cuts and bruises later, the five of them managed to move all of Leila and Tavia’s stuff to their new home.

“Wow, you guys have a nice apartment,” Michelle commented as she walked and looked around the apartment. “I wish I could move in here.”

I wish you could too, Raymond thought dreamily as he continued to look at Michelle.

“Raymond? Ray!” Tavia called loudly into Raymond’s ear to get his attention.

“What?” Raymond snapped to attention, looking at Tavia.

“I need to have a word with you,” Tavia said, pulling his arm and dragging him to a corner. While Ron showed Leila and Michelle around, Tavia turned to Raymond.

“What’s your problem with Michelle?” Tavia demanded.

“What? What are you talking about?” Raymond was confused. “I don’t have a problem with her.”

“Then why have you been so rude to her?” Tavia said, glaring up at him. “I saw everything. Every time she tries to talk to you, you move away. So what is…your…problem?” She poked Raymond’s shoulder with each of the last three words.

“Ow,” Raymond brushed Tavia’s hand away. He paused. He didn’t want to admit that he had a major crush on Michelle.

“Ohh…,” Tavia saw the look on Raymond’s face. “You like her.”

Raymond knew he couldn’t hide it any longer. “How did you know?”

“We grew up together, remember? I can’t believe I didn’t see it sooner,” Tavia grinned slyly. She turned and walked towards Michelle. “Hey, Michelle, pretty boy here wants to ask you out.” She pointed to Raymond. Everybody turned to him, including Michelle.

“Tavia!” Raymond couldn’t believe that she had actually said that in front of EVERYONE.

“What? Oh, wow, um, okay…,” Michelle was taken back by surprise. She handed the PlayStation controls to Ron and walked over to Raymond and Tavia.

Tavia looked at Raymond, expecting him to ask Michelle out. He just stood there, his heart pounding. He swallowed a couple of times to try to get rid of his dry mouth. He didn’t know what to say. He’s never asked a girl out before. Tavia sighed exasperatedly.

“Is 7:00 on Monday good for you?” Tavia asked Michelle, speaking for the speechless Raymond.

“Yeah,” Michelle said, not sure of who to look at: Raymond or Tavia.

“Great. He’ll pick you up at 6:45,” Tavia said cheerfully, slapping Raymond on the back. “Oh, but I must warn you. He gets a little touchy-feely after a couple of beers, so refrain from drinking too much.”

“Okay, I’ll keep that in mind,” Michelle giggled a little, finding it funny that Tavia was asking her out for Raymond. “It’s a date, Raymond.”

“Yeah, it’s a date,” Raymond finally found his voice.

As Michelle walked away, Tavia shook her head at Raymond. “So useless,” she muttered as she went into her new bedroom to set up her stuff.

Meanwhile, Leila and Ron were glued to the television, racing cars on the PlayStation.

“C’mon, C’mon, C’mon,” Leila said frantically as she pressed the buttons on the controls furiously. A bead of sweat slid down her forehead.

“Almost there, almost there…,” Ron kept repeating. He wasn’t going to let a girl beat him at a video game. “Just a couple more yards…”

“YEAH! In your face!” Leila shouted triumphantly, punching the air with her fists when she won. She stood up and started dancing her victory dance around Ron. “I won, I won!”

“Okay, fine, whatever,” Ron said dejectedly, accepting his defeat.

Leila saw his downcast face and stopped dancing. “Oh, I’m sorry, Ron. You know, growing up with three older brothers, I had to be good at playing video games. Please don’t be mad, Ron.” She kneeled back down and looked at the side of Ron’s face.

Suddenly, Ron reached out and started tickling Leila. She squealed and fell on her back, pushing Ron’s hands away.

“This is what you get for beating me,” Ron smiled evilly as he continued to tickle Leila.

“Okay, okay, I…learned…my lesson,” Leila tried to say as she continued to giggle. Ron finally stopped tickling Leila and sat back, leaning against the sofa. “That was fun,” he sighed happily.

“Yeah, for you maybe,” Leila punched Ron on the shoulder as she sat up. “I’m hungry. I’m going out to get some food.”

“We have some stuff in the fridge,” Ron said, looking up at Leila’s face as she stood up.

“Have you checked your fridge lately?” Leila asked, wrinkling her nose in disgust. “Everything’s expired. It smells like something died in there.” She shuddered.

“I’m coming along,” Ron said, getting up.

“We’re going to get some food! What do you guys want?” Leila shouted so that everybody could hear her.

“Chicken sandwich,” Leila heard Tavia call from their bedroom.

“Okay! Raymond? Michelle?” Leila called, wondering why they weren’t responding. Ron nudged her and pointed to the windows. Leila turned around and saw them talking on the terrace.

“Hey, guys, could you stop your flirting for a second and tell me what you want for lunch?” Leila stuck her head out onto the terrace.

Raymond and Michelle turned around, their faces turning red.

“Um…eh…pizza’s good,” Raymond answered. Leila turned her attention to Michelle.

“Same thing.”

“Okay,” Leila nodded as she stuck her head back in and started walking to the door. Ron followed her as she walked into the hallway and pressed the elevator button.

“How’s work?” Ron asked quietly, looking at Leila.

“Busy,” Leila answered. The elevator doors opened and they stepped in. “And what about you, Doctor Ng?”

Ron pressed the lobby button. As the elevator started going down, Ron answered: “You know that feeling when you save someone’s life?”

Leila nodded. “Yeah, it feels pretty good.”

“Now how about that feeling when someone dies despite everything you do?” Ron asked, looking down at his shoes. Two days ago, an elderly man had died of a heart attack while Ron was trying to revive him. As a new doctor, that experience still haunted Ron.

“You know what they say, right? You’re really not a doctor until you’ve killed your first patient,” Leila said. “You’re not God, you know.”

The elevator doors opened on the lobby and Leila and Ron were greeted by cheerful barking.

“Ooh, a dog!” Leila squealed happily. “A beautiful one, too. May I pet him?”

The young man smiled and nodded. Leila kneeled on the floor and began petting the golden retriever.

“Hey Bosco,” Ron greeted, recognizing the owner of the dog.

“Hey Ron,” Bosco Wong greeted back. He looked at Leila, who was still playing with his dog.

“Oh, you are so gorgeous. I absolutely love you,” Leila gushed as the dog licked her face.

“It looks like Ben really likes you,” Bosco commented.

“Ooh, that’s his name? Well, it’s nice to meet you, Ben,” Leila continued to drool over the dog.

“And what’s your name?” Bosco asked.

“Oh, how rude of me. Leila Tong,” Leila stood up and extended her hand. Bosco shook her hand and looked at Ron.

“Ron, you never told me you have such a pretty girlfriend,” Bosco said.

“Boy, aren’t you a smooth talker?” Leila giggled nervously.

“No, we’re just friends,” Ron shook his head and grinned. “Why? Are you interested in her?”

Bosco turned slightly red. “Oh, I gotta go. Let’s go, Ben. It was nice meeting you, Leila.” He walked into the elevator.

“Same here!” Leila called out as the elevator closed. She turned to Ron. “Nice guy.”

“I think you have an admirer,” Ron nudged Leila playfully.

Leila pushed him away and blushed. “Me, have an admirer? Please.” She scoffed as she walked down the street. “What have you been smoking?”

Ron laughed. “He’s a good catch, you know.”

“Then maybe you should go out with him,” Leila teased.

“Haha, you think you’re so funny,” Ron said sarcastically, reaching out his fingers to tickle Leila.

“Gotta catch me first!” Leila cried as she took off. Ron grinned and ran after her.
