Chapter 3

First Date

“Now remember, Ray, and remember this good, you are going on a date with one of my friends. That means you must show her the utmost respect. Got it?” Tavia drilled Raymond as she wrapped the tie around his neck and began tying it. “If I hear that Michelle didn’t enjoy the date, you will feel the full wrath of my fury. If you don’t understand that, that means I’ll kick your ass.”

“You know what? I think I’ll just tie the knot myself,” Raymond brushed Tavia’s hands away. “And don’t worry. I’m not going to mess up.”

“Then why do I have a feeling you will?” Tavia teased. She patted Raymond on the shoulder. “Just don’t get so nervous. Good luck, Ray.”

“Thanks,” Raymond said gratefully. “How do I look?”

“You look ready,” Tavia answered. “Now go and make me proud.”

-----------------------------------------------------------

Michelle was putting on her earrings when she heard the doorbell ring.

“Coming!” She limped over to the door in her stiletto heels.

“Hi Raymond,” Michelle greeted when she opened the door. He looks so cute, standing there in a suit with a bouquet of flowers in his hands.

“You look beautiful,” Raymond finally said after a moment of stunned silence. Michelle did look beautiful in a knee-length flowing navy dress.

Michelle blushed and smiled. “Thanks,” she said softly. “Are those for me?” She pointed to the flowers.

“Oh, yeah,” Raymond looked down at the bouquet and held it out for her.

Michelle took it and grinned. “Ready to go?”

Raymond nodded nervously. He noticed that Michelle was limping as she walked to the elevator. “Michelle, why are you…?”

“Limping?” Michelle finished as the elevator doors opened. “I’m not used to wearing heels. I usually wear running shoes or flats everywhere. You should feel special, Ray. I’m only going through this pain just for you.”

When they got to the restaurant and sat down at a table, Michelle sighed with relief.

“I hope you don’t mind, but I’m going to take my shoes off,” Michelle made a face as she kicked her shoes off under the table. She looked at Raymond.

“Raymond, are you sweating?” Michelle giggled a little as she took the napkin on the table and began to gently wipe Raymond’s forehead. “Don’t be so scared. I don’t bite much.”

Don’t be nervous, Raymond remembered Tavia’s words. If I hear that Michelle didn’t enjoy the date, you will feel the full wrath of my fury. He cleared his throat.

“I’m sorry,” Raymond said sheepishly. “This is my first date ever.”

“Really? Me too,” Michelle said, a little surprised. “Hard to believe that you’ve never been on a date. I mean, I can understand why I’ve never been out with a guy. I’m too much of a tomboy. What’s your excuse?”

Raymond shrugged. “I don’t know. Maybe it’s because I’ve never met a girl I really liked, until now.”

Michelle blushed and looked down at her plate. “So how long have you known Tavia and the rest of the gang?”

“Since forever. When we were kids, all four of us wanted to be superheroes. We were going to call ourselves the Fantastic Four,” Raymond smiled at the memories.

“Fantastic Four? I thought that was already taken,” Michelle said, scratching her head.

“Yeah, we were pretty stupid back then,” Raymond said, giving their orders to the waiter who had arrived to their table. He turned back to Michelle. “So why did you become a police officer?”

Michelle looked down and her smile disappeared. “My dad and older brother were cops. They died in the line of duty.”

Raymond didn’t know what to say. “I’m sorry.”

“I guess I became a police officer to honor their memories. It was hard at first. I couldn’t handle all the training. It was brutal, but it became easier when I met Tavia. We were in the same class together and we had a five-week training course in the mountains just outside of Hong Kong. One time, she put spiders all over our instructor’s bed. The entire dorm woke up to the sound of his girlish screams. It was hilarious.” Michelle started laughing. By this time, Raymond was cracking up, too.

Raymond and Michelle spent the rest of the evening reliving past memories, laughing and joking about them.

-----------------------------------------------------------

“Thanks, Ray, for helping me home. You can be sure that I’ll never wear these shoes again,” Michelle said gratefully as she took her arms away from Raymond’s neck. Raymond had supported Michelle the entire way home. Michelle winced a little as she entered her apartment. She turned around and faced Raymond.

“I’m sorry about the…um…the…you know,” Raymond apologized as he turned red.

Michelle giggled. “It’s okay, Raymond. It’ll wash out, I hope. Don’t worry about it. It’s just a dress. I had a really good time today. Now you don’t have to worry about Tavia beating you to death. I’m going to give her a good report of our date. Now is it customary to give you a kiss on the first date? Oh, what the hell.”

Before Raymond could react, Michelle leaned in and kissed him. Raymond was shocked and didn’t know what to do at first. He closed his eyes and kissed back, sliding his arm around her waist.

“Wow, first date and first kiss,” Michelle whispered when she pulled away. “Not a bad day at all today.”

Raymond was speechless.

“I’ll see you soon, okay?” Michelle pecked Raymond on the cheek. “Bye.”

Raymond floated home on a cloud. When he got back to his apartment, he found Tavia on the living room floor, shooting up a grotesque monster on his PlayStation. A can of Coke and a bag of chips lay next to her.

“You’re off the hook, Ray. Michelle said she had a great time. That’s my boy. I’m so proud of you,” Tavia smiled, her eyes still fixated on the television screen. Raymond went over to the sofa and sat down.

“Michelle kissed me,” Raymond said in wonder, still unable to believe that it happened.

“Mmhmm,” Tavia mumbled, not quite paying attention. She blasted open another monster, the virtual blood and guts hitting the screen.

“Where’s Ron and Leila?” Raymond asked as he took a sip of the Coke.

“They have the graveyard shift today. Won’t be coming home for a while,” Tavia replied, still focused on the game.

“I could do way better than that,” Raymond challenged as he grabbed the other set of controls.

“You forget that I’m a cop, Ray. I shoot for a living,” Tavia shot back. “But I’m up for a competition, that is, if you can handle it.”

“Bring it on,” Raymond grinned slyly.

Raymond and Tavia spent the rest of the night locked in a fierce battle to see who could kill the most monsters.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Meanwhile,

“Graveyard shifts are so dead. Nothing’s going on,” Leila groaned in boredom.

“That’s why they’re called graveyard shifts,” Gillian replied as she drove slowly down a street. “Besides, newbies are always stuck with the worst shifts. Edison warned me about it when I finished my training.”

“Yeah,” Leila had to face the facts. At least Ron also had the graveyard shift today, Leila thought. It comforted her a little bit that Ron was also suffering.

“Hey, look at that. I think someone’s in trouble,” Gillian pointed at something on the street. A group of homeless people were crowded around an unconscious girl who was sprawled on the sidewalk.

“Hey!” Leila stuck her head out and shouted to get the bums’ attention. They quickly scurried away when they heard her voice. Gillian parked the ambulance and Leila quickly got and rushed up to the unconscious girl.

“Miss?” Leila nudged the girl. She checked her pulse. At least she’s still alive, Leila thought as she looked at her face. Her face was bruised as if somebody had repeatedly punched her. She had heavy eye bags and her face seemed sunken in. She was wearing a worn-out halter top and jean miniskirt, complete with fishnet stockings and knee-high stiletto boots. Leila looked around. Gillian had driven them into a sleazy neighborhood where hookers would often wait to get picked up. In fact, there were several of them looking towards her direction right now, wondering what was happening.

“I think we have a battered prostitute,” Leila said to Gillian

“It looks like she’s also a heroin addict,” Gillian commented as she wheeled a stretcher to Leila. She pointed to the girl’s elbows. Leila could see tiny holes near the girl’s veins, indicating that she had been shooting heroin.

“C’mon, let’s get her to the hospital,” Leila urged. “You get her legs while I’ll get her shoulders.”

They picked up the girl as gently as they could and put her on the stretcher. As they pushed her into the ambulance, Leila shook her head.

“Poor girl. Looks like she went through a lot,” Leila said sympathetically.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Ron was taking a break outside the hospital when he saw the ambulance pull up. He shot out of the bench and ran up to the ambulance as it stopped.

“We have an unconscious girl. Pretty beaten up,” Leila said quickly as she got out and ran to the back of the ambulance and opened the doors. “Oh, and hi, Ron.”

Ron grinned. He helped Leila wheel out the stretcher and began pushing it into the hospital. “I’ll take it from here, Leila.”

“Ron, wait,” Leila said loudly as she ran up to him. Ron looked at her. “I don’t know for sure, but Gillian and I think she’s a heroin addict. Look at her veins.”

Ron looked down at the girl. “Yeah, looks like she’s been injecting heroin for a while.” He began to wheel the girl into the emergency room as Leila got back into the ambulance. After checking her vitals, Ron determined that she just needed some rest.

“Do you need me to wheel her into a room, Dr. Ng?” A nurse asked.

“No, it’s okay, Vivien. I’ll do it myself,” Ron smiled at her. He wheeled the girl into a vacant room and gently carried her onto a bed. Ron slid a chair to the bed and sat down. He didn’t have anything to do right now and figured he’ll sit by the girl and wait until she wakes up. He looked at her.

The girl looked like she was in her middle 20s. She had a black eye and some bruises on her cheeks and around her mouth. Ron also saw some bruises and cuts on her arms. However, underneath all the injuries, Ron could see that she’s very pretty. What happened to you? He thought with pity as he gazed at her face.

The girl’s eyes begin to flutter open and she stirred. Ron leaned forward. She looked around in confusion and saw Ron.

“W-who are you?” She asked fearfully as she started cowering and shaking.

“I’m a doctor. Please, don’t be scared,” Ron replied, holding up his hands to show her that he wasn’t hiding anything. “You’re at the hospital, miss. The paramedics brought you here.”

“I-I don’t need to be here,” the girl tried to get up, but fell back. She felt so weak and dizzy.

“Take it easy, miss,” Ron said gently. “You need to get some rest.”

“No, I’m fine, really,” the girl insisted as she tried again to get out of bed. “I have to go. I’ve got clients.”

“Please, miss. You shouldn’t be going anywhere in your condition,” Ron said. “Just stay the night to get some rest and I promise you, you can leave the next morning if you feel better.”

The girl stopped resisting and looked at Ron. She’s never met a man who’s been this kind to her. “A-alright.”

Ron helped her back into bed and covered her with a blanket. The girl watched him. “Thanks, Doctor…?”

“Call me Ron,” Ron smiled at her. “If you don’t mind, I’ll like to know your name.” He extended his hand.

The girl shook his hand. “My name’s Nancy Wu.”

-----------------------------------------------------------
Are there any Ron/Nancy fans out there? I thought they had good performances together in TOB and since I made Nancy such a badass, excuse my language, in my last story, I wanted her to be the good guy this time. And don't you find it ironic that it was Leila who brought Nancy to Ron? As usual, thanks for continuing to support my story.
