Xi Men and Xiao Gen met at the building. Xiao Gen arrived first.
XI MEN
Why are you here so early?
XIAO GEN
I couldn’t sleep. What about you?
XI MEN
I was in the pub with friends.
XIAO GEN
Oh, then you didn’t get to sleep too.
INT. BUILDING - STAIRS
They started climbing up the stairs to reach the rooftop. Xi Men noticed Xiao Gen lagged behind.
XI MEN
Are you ok?
XIAO GEN
After having no sleep, walking up the stairs is such a task.
XI MEN
Right. Just like when you were little, you were always weak. I thought you wouldn’t get tired no matter how long we played. But in the end, you were like battery used up and would sleep immediately on the floor.
XIAO GEN
Yeah, when I was little. I did things by instinct. When I want to play, I played. When I’m hungry, I eat. When I’m tired, I’d sleep.
XI MEN
You were like an animal. But to me, it was really an escape. You being there for me really helped me back then. I was really grateful to you, with all my heart.
(beat)
Come on, the sun will rise soon.
XIAO GEN
Xi Men, did you know I have always liked you?
XI MEN
Yeah, because you were so transparent. You were easy to figure out.
XIAO GEN
To me, you were really hard to figure out. That morning when it’s the first time we were suppose to see the sign, I felt that these stairs symbolized our history together. I was thinking after we climbed and reached the top, where will it take us next.
(beat)
Did you notice that ever since we met again, we can only…
XI MEN
Only what?
XIAO GEN
Nothing. Never mind. Oh look, it’s almost time.
XI MEN
Yeah, let’s hurry.
Xi Men opened the door to the rooftop.
XI MEN’S POV – door opening
XI MEN (O.S.)
What shall we do next? Where do we go from here?
INT. DAO MING OFFICE
Though Dao Ming Si handled things quite well, all their clients and business associates of Dao Ming Corp were nervous and worried. They wanted to discuss business directly with Dao Ming Feng. They will only be reassured if Dao Ming Feng would finally come to Taiwan and talk to them.
EXT. YING-DE UNIVERSITY – DAY
Shan Cai walked around. She was still in denial. She couldn’t see the reality of Dao Ming Si actually leaving.
Dao Ming Si picked Shan Cai up from school.
INT. MOVING CAR
SHAN CAI
Where are we going?
DAO MING SI
We’re going on a trip.
SHAN CAI
A trip?! What trip? We didn’t talk about going on a trip. Besides, I’m graduating in a few of days and you are…
DAO MING SI
Don’t worry, we’ll be back on time.
Shan Cai suddenly da wild thought.
SHAN CAI
You’re not thinking of eloping are you?!
DAO MING SI
Like you would agree to that.
Shan Cai gave a sigh of relief.
EXT./INT. LUXURY CRUISE SHIP – NIGHT
They arrived at the pier and they boarded a luxury cruise ship.
SHAN CAI
Dao Ming Si, what are we doing here?
Shan Cai looked around and found no other people there.
SHAN CAI
Are we the only people here?
DAO MING SI
So many questions. Yeah, we’re only ones here, except for the ship’s crew of course. Don’t you remember this ship?
Shan Cai thought hard and remembered.
SHAN CAI
This is the cruise ship we took during spring break!
DAO MING SI
Right. Instead of going to Hawaii, I bought this ship that the son of the super rich rented.
Shan Cai smiled at that memory.
EXT. LUXURY CRUISER SHIP – DAY – STOCK FOOTAGE
Qing He and Shan Cai Dao Ming Si, Mei Zhou, Xi Men, Bai He and Qian Hui at the ship railings waving at them.
SHAN CAI
But why the memory of this ship?
DAO MING SI
Because we had our first kiss here. Come, let’s go.
Dao Ming Si walked ahead. Shan Cai stared at his back for a while, then follows.
SWIMMING POOL
They sat by the pool. Their feet were soaking in the water and their dinner was placed in between them.
DAO MING SI
I remember that night, we had a party and Jing gave you a make-over.
SHAN CAI
Yeah, And then Bai He and Qian Hui had that stupid midnight-kissing-in-the-dark game.
DAO MING SI
When the lights went back on, you were on top of me, with your lips on mine.
Shan Cai kicked the water and splashed it on him.
DAO MING SI
Hey! Why splash water at me? It was true! You came on to me!
SHAN CAI
Yeah right. I remember thinking that night that I kissed a pig.
DAO MING SI
What? You called me a pig?! I’m a man of size!
Dao Ming Si also splashed water at her.
SHAN CAI
It’s sense, not size! Really, how are you going to survive in New York?
Shan Cai splashed water back at him. They kept splashing water at each other until they had pushed each other into the pool. They laughed as they try to 'drown’ each other. They rose up and felt conscious seeing each other was wet.
DAO MING SI
Come, let’s get out of the pool. If you get sick and won’t be able to go up stage to get your diploma, you’re going to blame me again.
SHAN CAI
Of course I’d blame you.
BEDROOM
Shan Cai stood at the balcony of the room with dry clothes on. She enjoyed the moonrise. Dao Ming Si came out of the bathroom all changed and joins her at the balcony. Shan Cai lifted her gaze into the night sky.
SHAN CAI
There are no stars.
Dao Ming Si looked at the sky too.
DAO MING SI
It’s because of the moonrise. It’s hard to see the stars with the moon shining brightly.
SHAN CAI
But the moon is beautiful too, especially the way the moonlight looks on the sea, they are like stars dancing.
Dao Ming Si embraces Shan Cai from behind.
SHAN CAI
You know, on that night before, Jing did give me a one-night Cinderella dream. It’s the dream of every girl.
DAO MING SI
Is it?
SHAN CAI
Yes. What about you Dao Ming Si? What is the dream of guys? To be King of the World or something?
DAO MING SI
I pretty much done that.
(lets go of Shan Cai and look her in the eye)
It had already come true.
Shan Cai realized he was talking about her and blushed. They kissed. Then Dao Ming Si told her to get some sleep already. He went inside the room and prepared the sofa for him to sleep on. Shan Cai started to cry softly as she watched at Dao Ming Si preparing the sofa. The reality of Dao Ming Si leaving finally dawned to her.
SHAN CAI (V.O.)
A few hours left before the sun rises. When I wake up, I’m sure Dao Ming Si won’t be here. I’ll stand at the pier alone. My tears will surely stop flowing then, because this is not goodbye. As we get separated over and over again, the tie between us will only get stronger.
Dao Ming Si noticed Shan Cai was still not on her bed yet and saw her crying.
DAO MING SI
Shan Cai, what’s wrong?
SHAN CAI
(wipes her tears)
Nothing. Let’s get some sleep.
Although Dao Ming Si knew something was wrong, he didn’t pursue it. Shan Cai sat on the bed and Dao Ming Si lay down the sofa. Shan Cai thought that this was their last night together.
SHAN CAI
Dao Ming Si, would you like to use the bed?
DAO MING SI
How many times do I have to tell you? I can’t let the woman sleep on the sofa.
SHAN CAI
What I’m saying is… with me.
Dao Ming Si got wide eyed and Shan Cai explained herself immediately.
SHAN CAI
You really know how ruin a moment, you pervert! What I mean, just be beside me. It’s a large bed, we can share it.
DAO MING SI
Ok, I understand.
They lay down on the bed and pull up the covers.
DAO MING SI
Good night.
SHAN CAI
Good night, Dao Ming Si.
They closed their eyes and fell asleep.
♫Say goodnight not good-bye
You will never leave my heart behind
Like the path of a star
I'll be anywhere you are
Don't you fear when you dream
Waking up is never what it seems
Like a jewel buried deep
Like a promise meant to keep
You are everything you want to be
So just let your heart reach out to me
I'll be right by your side
Say goodnight not good-bye♫
INT. CRUISE SHIP – BEDROOM – DAWN
Shan Cai woke up due to the sunlight coming through from the balcony. She sat up on her bed and looked around the room. Dao Ming Si is not there. She heard a knock on the door. Shan Cai, thinking it’s Dao Ming Si, quickly opened it. When she did, it was actually one of the ship’s crew with a food cart.
CREW
Master Dao Ming had arranged for your breakfast to be brought in the room. After breakfast, there’s a car and driver to bring you home.
SHAN CAI
Thanks.
Crew left. Shan Cai headed for the balcony and looked out to the sea.
SHAN CAI (V.0.)
I am standing at the pier alone. It will be a lie to say I’m not sad. But I’m okay.
(look of assurance on face)
I got my two feet headed for the future.
INT. SHAN CAI’S HOUSE – DAY
Shan Cai entered her home and found Xiao You waiting for her. They settled down and conversed.
SHAN CAI
Come to think of it, Mei Zhuo and Xiao Qiao are in a similar situation as me and Dao Ming Si. How come things are easier for them? Why it has to be complicated between me and Dao Ming Si?
XIAO YOU
Have Dao Ming Si asked you again to go to New York with him?
SHAN CAI
No. Even if he did, I still don’t know what answer to give him.
XIAO YOU
Shan Cai, if you decide to go to New York, be sure to contact me in Canada. I can come to see you.
SHAN CAI
Why? Are you going back to Canada?
XIAO YOU
Actually, the reason I came here today, is to let you know I’m leaving. I’m going back to Canada.
SHAN CAI
What? Why didn’t you tell us at the pub?
XIAO YOU
Too much drama went on already, I didn’t want to add more to it. I’m so sorry to leave you at a time like this.
SHAN CAI
Don’t be. We all have our own lives to lead, I understand.
XIAO YOU
Thanks. I’m going to miss you.
SHAN CAI
I will too. What about Xi Men? You haven’t told me anything about you and Xi Men since the last time we were at his house.
XIAO YOU
Xi Men...Xi Men is like a dream I yearn for.
SHAN CAI
What dream you yearn for? What’s that?
XIAO YOU
He is a good dream...a dream I would never wake up from.
SHAN CAI
(looks thoughtfully at Xiao You)
And you are ok…just with that, a dream?
XIAO YOU
Who ever said true love had to be mutual? It’s better knowing what will never be than always thinking of what could’ve been. Now I no longer have to try and hope, coz it’s all over now. Xi Men is with Xiao Gen, and I'm ready to move on. And I'll be okay.
Xiao You smiled as confident as she could to her best friend.
EXT. YING-DE UNIVERSITY – GROUNDS
Shan Cai’s graduation day. She wore her cap and gown along with her fellow graduates. Her parents were fusing all over her, creating drama that they thought this day would never come. Qing He was taking pictures of them. Lei and Xi Men arrived.
SHAN CAI
Xi Men! Lei, I thought you’re in Japan.
LEI
I told you I’d be back for your graduation.
SHAN CAI
Thanks for coming, I'm glad you made it.
XI MEN
Where’s Ah Si? The ceremony is about to start.
SHAN CAI
I don’t know… he…
QING HE
I tried calling his cellphone but he wasn’t answering.
XI MEN
That’s weird. He wouldn’t have left for New York already, would he?
LEI
Not without knowing Shan Cai’s decision. Have you?
Lei looked at Shan Cai and she shook her head.
SHAN CAI’S PARENTS
The ceremony is starting. Shan Cai, get to your seat! Quick!
LEI
I’d go to Ah Si’s house and check. Xi Men, take a look at the airport.
XI MEN
Ok. Qing He, you’d be in charge here. Contact us if Ah Si arrives.
Graduation commenced. Later, Shan Cai walked up the stage. She received her diploma, shook hands with the dean, and moved the tassel of her graduation cap to the other side. Before descending from the stage, she tried to look out for Dao Ming Si, hoping to see him. She saw somebody running towards and stopped under a tree. It was Lei. He dand smiled at her. Shan Cai smiled back at him.
When the ceremony waover, the graduates threw their caps up in the air. Qing He and Shan Cai’s parents congratulated her. Shan Cai came up to Lei and he congratulated her. Lei took out a letter from his back pocket and handed it to her.
Shan Cai stared at the letter for a moment and opened it. As she was reading the letter, Lei looked at the direction where Shan Cai’s back was turned at and there’s a man who looked like Dao Ming Si walking away. From another direction, Xi Men arrived.
XI MEN
He wasn’t at the airport. Any news here?
SHAN CAI
He has gone to New York...
XI MEN
(mumbles)
How could that be?
INT. SHAN CAI’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Shan Cai’s parents held a small graduation party for her. Mostly her parents' friends were present. Shan Cai walked away from the crowd and sat on the chair on the hallway and she looked at the white lights Dao Ming Si put up for her, with Dao Ming Si’s letter in her hands. While lost in her reverie, Lei slowly approached.
SHAN CAI
I knew he was leaving, just didn’t know right away. But telling me through a letter? That bastard. That was low even for him. I can’t wait to see him again so that I can punch his face.
LEI
Maybe there are things he can’t say directly at your face.
SHAN CAI
That’s you, not him. He always told me things directly.
LEI
Maybe he just doesn’t want to see your face sad.
SHAN CAI
Well, he’s going to see my face mad when I see him. Why are you defending him anyway?
LEI
I’m not defending him. But if you really want to see him so he can see your angry face, then go to New York. You have graduated, wasn’t that part of your and Ah Si’s plan? You can follow him now to New York if you want to.
SHAN CAI
I thought you said you’re not going to tell me what to do?
LEI
How would I know that you’d do the wrong thing?
SHAN CAI
Hey, what do you mean by that?
Lei took out an envelope and handed it to Shan Cai.
LEI
Here, my graduation gift for you.
SHAN CAI
You didn’t have to.
LEI
Take a look.
Shan Cai opens it and sees airline tickets.
SHAN CAI
Lei…
LEI
I’m not telling you what to do. I’m giving you the opportunity to do the right thing and hope you'd take it. Those are airline tickets to New York.
SHAN CAI
But why there are two?
LEI
I’d accompany you. You know nothing about New York, what are you going to do when you get there?
SHAN CAI
What you said makes sense but…I don’t want to trouble you. What about-
LEI
I thought we agreed: if you go to the end of the road, I’ll go with you.
SHAN CAI
Thanks, Lei.
