Chapter 8

New York State Of Mind

INT. DAO MING NY MANSION - BEDROOM

Dao Ming Si arrived at their mansion in New York and he went straight to see his father in the master's bedroom. His father lay on the bed looking fragile, so far from the forceful and proud man Dao Ming Si always pictured him to be. He sat on the chair beside the bed.

DAO MING FENG (O.S.)
They said you came home, I knew you'd want to see your father right away.

Dao Ming Si stood up from his chair. He turned around and saw his mom. DAO MING FENG walked to the end of the bed, and looked at her husband.

DAO MING FENG
Don't worry, your father is in critical but stable condition now. We are only waiting for him to wake up.

Dao Ming Feng's voice broke at the last part. Dao Ming Si looked at her and saw her holding back her tears. He approached her.

DAO MING SI
Ma.

Dao Ming Si placed his arm around his mom's shoulders and Dao Ming Feng placed her head on her son's shoulder.

DAO MING FENG
I was so worried.

DAO MING SI
It's ok, Ma. I'm already here.

INT. DAO MING NY MANSION

Lei and Shan Cai arrived at the Dao Ming Si's mansion in New York. Shan Cai askeds to see Dao Ming Si. Dao Ming Si was surprised and happy to see Shan Cai and ran to her.

DAO MING SI
Shan Cai!

Dao Ming Si was about to hug her. Shan Cai pushed him at his shoulder and sucker-punched him.

DAO MING SI
Hey! What did you hit me for?

SHAN CAI
Dao Ming Si, you bastard! How could you leave just like that? You always do things the way you want to!

DAO MING SI
That's why we went on the trip before I left, that was to say goodbye. I thought you knew that.

SHAN CAI
We didn't say goodbye, I only recall saying goodnight. But with an idiot like you, how would you know the difference?

DAO MING SI
I also gave you the letter. Didn't you read it?

SHAN CAI
Oh yeah, a letter. That makes me feel so much better!

DAO MING SI
Ok, ok, you're so irritating. I apolo-

SHAN CAI
If apologies are useful, what's the use of the police?!

They laughed and finally calmed down. Dao Ming Si noticed Lei who was very amused watching them quarrel. Each time Lei witness their petty fights, he can't help but think he dodged a bullet.

DAO MING SI
Lei, thanks for accompanying Shan Cai.

LEI
Don't mention it. How are things here?

Suddenly, Dao Ming Feng came out.

DAO MING FENG
What is going on here? What's with all the noise?

She then noticed Shan Cai.

DAO MING FENG
Shan Cai! What are you doing here?! You should know by now the troubles of the Dao Ming family, why are you here to add more problems?

SHAN CAI
I-I…I'm not here to cause trouble. I just wanted to see Dao Ming Si.

DAO MING FENG
See Ah Si? Ah Si left you already! And you still have the nerve to follow him here?

DAO MING SI
Ma, that's not true. I didn't leave her! In fact, we already made plans for our marriage!

SHAN CAI
Dao Ming Si! Why did you say that?!

DAO MING FENG
Ah Si! If you came here to play your childish games, now is not the right time. I won't have you bringing in trash to this house!

LEI
Auntie, relax. It was me who brought Shan Cai here, you can calm down.

SHAN CAI
I won't be staying in this house, you don't worry.

DAO MING SI
But-

SHAN CAI
Dao Ming Si, no. It's not right for me to stay here. It will cause more trouble if I do. Auntie, you have my word. I won't stay here. But I will see Dao Ming Si. I came here for him.

DAO MING FENG
Well, I'd see to it that you don't.

INT. DAO MING NY MANSION

A LADY in her early twenties entered the Dao Ming NY mansion. She walked to the bar and poured herself a glass of chardonnay. Dao Ming Si, Mei Zhuo and Lei then entered. She saw them come in. F3 didn't notice her.

LADY (O.S.)
What the hell are you doing here?

F3 stopped walking and looked at her.

DAO MING SI
What am I doing here? I should be the one asking you that. This is my house!

LADY
Yeah? When was the last time you were home, during your infancy?

DAO MING SI
What the-- Who the heck are you?!

LADY
Why of course. Master Dao Ming is too self-absorbed to know who I am.

Dao Ming Si fumed and walked towards her. Mei Zhuo heldhim back.

DAO MING SI
Mei Zhuo, let me go!

MEI ZHUO
I'm not going to. You are going to hit her!

DAO MING SI
I won't! I don't hit women!

MEI ZHUO
Yeah right.

LADY
You don't hit women, but you hit little girls.

Dao Ming Si managed to let himself free of Mei Zhuo but lunged forward at the lady in the process. She thought he was going to hit her, so she grabbed his arm and twisted it.

LADY
But I guess this little girl knows how to fight back.

DAO MING SI
You let me go!

She eventually let him go.

DAO MING SI
Who the hell are you?!

LADY
Take a wild guess, pineapple-head.
(looks at his hair)
Guess you no longer have that pineapple hairdo. You think you looked so cool with that messed up untidy hair. What did you do, finally figured out how to use a comb?

Mei Zhuo and Lei held their laughter. Dao Ming Si got more irritated.

DAO MING SI
If you don't tell me who you are, I'd have our guards throw you out!

Dao Ming Zhuang entered and hit Dao Ming Si at the back of his head.

DAO MING ZHUANG
Ah Si! Where are your manners?

DAO MING SI
Sis! What did you hit me for?! I'm just telling off this intruder in our house.

DAO MING ZHUANG
She is not an intruder. She's my husband's sister, Xi Yuan.

DAO MING SI
Xi Yuan?! I don't remember her.

DAO MING ZHUANG
How could you not? You were also grade school classmates in Switzerland.

Xi Yuan took out a pair of big round eyeglasses, wore it and faced them.

MEI ZHUO
Yeah, I remember! Xi Yan (four-eyes)! Ah Si, she's the girl who always fights for the control of the playground against us during recess.

Xi Yuan scoffed upon hearing her childhood nickname again and removed her glasses. Dao Ming Si's facial expression changed, showing he recalled her but was still annoyed. Apparently, they have no nice memories of each other.

XI YUAN
Took you all so long.

Dao Ming Zhuang reintroduced the three of them to her.

XI YUAN
Yeah, I remember: the clown (Mei Zhuo), the pineapple head (Dao Ming Si) and the mute (Lei).

DAO MING SI
Xi Yan (four-eyes)!

XI YUAN
Whatever.
(turns to Dao Ming Zhuang)
Where's auntie? I went to the office, brother said she might be at home. I got something for her from France.

DAO MING ZHUANG
Oh yes, how was your trip?

XI YUAN
Cut short. Auntie said she wants me home, something important she needs from me, I dunno.

DAO MING ZHUANG
She must be at the study.

XI YUAN
Ok, I'm going up to see her. Here,
(hands Dao Ming Zhuang a paper bag)
I got something for you too.

Zhuang and Xi Yuan left them. F3 chilled out and poured themselves a drink from the bar. Mei Zhuo recalled the times that they would fight against her and her girl friends for the sandbox, or how would they steal their dolls and hid them.

LEI
Why do you think she's here?

DAO MING SI
How should I know? I just hope she won't get on my back.

INT. DAO MING NY MANSION – STUDY ROOM

Xi Yuan entered and saw Dao Ming Feng sitting behind the table giving instructions to Yu Tian, her right-hand man. Yu Tian stood at one side of the room when they saw Xi Yuan enter. Dao Ming Feng got up from her seat to greet her.

XI YUAN
Hi auntie! How are you holding up?

DAO MING FENG
Much better.

XI YUAN
If there's anything I can do to help, you know I would.

They sat down.

DAO MING FENG
Actually, auntie does need your help. My son, Ah Si…

XI YUAN
Yeah, saw him downstairs. What's he doing here? I thought we agreed not to ask him to come.

DAO MING FENG
I was surprised myself. He came here on his own. He seems to be growing up.
XI YUAN
And pigs fly. He came but I don't think he's here to stay. He will leave just like he always does.

DAO MING FENG
That's where you come in. I want you to help me make sure he stays here for good.

XI YUAN
How am I going to do that? We barely can stand being around each other. Frankly, I don't think he staying would be good for us. He's just going to bail.

DAO MING FENG
Ah Si coming here without I making him, that's already a big step. But there is still a hindrance preventing him to stay.

XI YUAN
What?

DAO MING FENG
Wild grass. You have heard of Shan Cai, right?

XI YUAN
You mentioned her to me some time ago.

DAO MING FENG
That ill-bred girl followed Ah Si here. Get rid of her, and Ah Si will stay.

XI YUAN
Why me?

DAO MING FENG
You're the only one I can trust in this house to do that. Zhuang is on the side of that wild grass. If you promise me you can make Ah Si stay, then I can go back to Taiwan without worries.

After their conversation, Xi Yuan left.

YU TIAN
Madam Dao Ming, do you really believe that Ms. Xi Yuan will do exactly what you ask of her?

DAO MING FENG
She will. That girl never let me down before. Besides, there's another reason I want her in the house.

YU TIAN
If you don't mind me asking madam, what is it?

DAO MING FENG
I want her and Ah Si to spend time together.

YU TIAN
Madam, what you mean is….

DAO MING FENG
Xi Yuan has a free-spirit, smart, pretty, and stubborn. She has a personality much like of that wild grass Shan Cai. But unlike that wild grass, she is classy, well-bred and fit for the Dao Ming name.

YU TIAN
But would matching them up break the agreement between you and her brother?

DAO MING FENG
It wouldn't. I'm not announcing their engangement. I will just let fate take its course.

INT. DAO MING NY MANSION

A couple of days later, Dao Ming Feng left for Taiwan. But before she did, she announced Xi Yuan would be in charge of the Dao Ming mansion.

STUDY ROOM - NIGHT

While doing some paper work, Xi Yuan fell asleep. The door was open. Her older brother, Xi Lin, passed by and sees her. He entered and he wokeher up.

XI YUAN
(sleepily)
Hey…you just got back?

XI LIN
Yeah, I've been jumping from one office to another the whole day. What are you doing here in the study?

XI YUAN
Well, you know me. My mind functions better past midnight. So how's it going?

XI LIN
Well, there's still a lot of work to be done.

XI YUAN
What about that punk, David?

Dao Ming Si passed by the study and he eavesdropped on their conversation.

XI LIN
He got lots to learn, but he's doing better. Why?

XI YUAN
I don't think it's wise to count on him. He's not going to stay. He will just leave us hanging.

XI LIN
Come on, he did come here on his own.

XI YUAN
It was just brought on by guilt. But he wouldn't last, trust me. I don't know why auntie wants me to make sure her son stays, that punk already told her before that he had abandoned this family. Now he just comes waltzing in here and destroy all our hardships we put on in this family? I'm not going to let him do that. We already invested so much here for him just to take it all away. He's like a storm that will destroy everything here before he leaves.

XI LIN
What did mother-in-law tell you?

XI YUAN
She wants me to baby-sit her son.

Dao Ming Si stops listening on their conversation and leaves.

XI LIN
Give the guy credit. He's trying. Don't antagonize him too much.
