Once she was settled in a private room, she asked to see our friends who were waiting outside. I called them as soon as we arrived in the hospital. Ah Si came in first.
Ah Si plastered a smile on his face when he entered his wife’s best friend’s room.
“They sent you first?” Xiao You said it rather than asked it.
“Yeah,” Ah Si replied, “I’m their opening act.”
“Why don’t we start by rubbing that fake smile off your face?”
Xiao You smiled at Ah Si and said, “tell me something new, Dao Ming Si.”
“well,” Ah Si sighed, “xi men said you’re going to have a major heart surgery which will save or kill you right after you gave birth. But other than that, everything seems to be on the up and up.”
Xiao You laughed with Ah Si. The rest came in, with worried faces at first, but tried to laugh off the situation later on. Afterwards, Xiao You requested to see me privately. I went back in and our friends left us alone to talk.
I sat on the chair beside her bed, and held her hand. She just looked at me for sometime before she spoke.
“Listen Xi Men, you got to stop being sick.”
“Me?”
“The guilty look on your face, it’s sick.”
I tried to change my facial expression, but it remained stiff.
“It’s nobody’s fault, Xi Men. You have to stop blaming yourself.”
I didn’t want to avert my eyes from her because I don’t want to take off my eyes away from her ever. But still, I had to lower my eyes. I’m ashamed that up until now, she still can read my mind so well. She was still worrying about me when I should be the one worrying for her.
“Please, Xi Men. Otherwise, I’d know you’ll be ok.”
“you know the deal, you have to stay with me.”
Xiao You swallowed, and said,“Be next to me then.”
I climbed on the other side of the hospital bed and lay down beside her, holding her close...yet i felt she was sliping away.
