I had wanted to say those words since the day we broke up. I still love Kim JaeJoong, but now, I realised that I was being selfish, wanting him all to myself. By wearing the bracelet that he had given me, it gave me a sense of sanity.
“Then why are you running away?”
“Because…you don’t need me to be in your life…”
“What made you think that…? I still want you to be by my side, please Bomi…”
I turned around and looked straight at him, trying to keep my tears in; trying to hold back the part of me that wants to hug him; trying to hold the part of me that wants to say “I love you, please be with me again”.
“JaeJoong ah, I’ve kept track of you through the internet. I’ve looked up your pictures. You seem happy and content, always smiling and laughing. You’ve forgotten me…”
“Bomi, if I’ve forgotten you, why do you think I sent an invitation to you? Bomi, I have never forgotten you. Forgetting you is like…”
“…remembering someone you don’t know. JaeJoong ah; that’s the most cliché love quote. You think that I wouldn’t know that?”
“I’m trying to express your importance to me.”
I turned around, my back facing him.
“JaeJoong ah, you have your destiny; I have mine. Our routes are completely different. Only by chance did we meet here today but the next day, our routes would’ve split us again, never to become one.”
“Bomi ah…”
“JaeJoong ah, you can’t have girlfriends. You know that. Now, I rather let you have your career than let you be with me without your career.”
I started to walk away but he leapt to me and hugged me from behind, making me stop dead in my tracks. Tears formed in my eyes and I felt his, dropping onto my shoulder.
“Missing you…” he said, repeating the words that were forever engraved onto the bracelet that he had given me so many years ago.
“Will we meet again…as…friends?”
He said the last word somewhat hesitantly. I turned around, with a smile on my face.
“As friends, we will,” and I hugged him one last time before I watched him leave.
--------------------------------------------------------------
After inheriting my parent’s mansion the day I turned eighteen, I had never set foot into the outside world until now; until that moment when he sent the letter enclosed with the ticket for his concert. Most of the servants were the ones who went out to get whatever I wanted. I had become anti-social; isolated from the living world outside. It was just as simple as stepping my foot outside the mansion gates but I never did; only my love for JaeJoong drove me to the concert, where I encountered him.
“Mistress, here is the daily newspaper.”
My maid handed me the black and white large sheets of paper that was folded in the middle. As always, I flipped to the entertainment page but this time, I didn’t have to. Everything I wanted (or maybe not) to know was on the front page. Its words were written in a big font just like the heading would be.
YOONGWOONG JAEJOONG SEEN WITH MILLIONAIRE, SAE BOMI
“DBSK”s lead singer, YoongWoong JaeJoong, also known as Kim JaeJoong, was seen yesterday with the millionaire Sae Bomi during DBSK’s Korean Concert. Bomi had apparently been sent a letter enclosed with the concert ticket by JaeJoong. Bomi was once, JaeJoong’s ex girlfriend before his debut. Concert go-ers claimed that JaeJoong had whispered her name into the microphone; Bomi ran for it, avoiding the fangirls in the concert while JaeJoong had jumped off stage and ran after his ex girlfriend. The couple reached the outside and the doors to the concert hall was closed behind them, preventing the fans to rush to their idol. At first, Bomi didn’t want to look at JaeJoong but after a while, she turned around. The couple ended the meeting with a hug and Bomi departed.
‘She still has that bracelet that JaeJae had given her years ago, a day before their breakup,’ said a fan from the concert.
‘She’s got the looks but I don’t think she has the heart to really love Jae-oppa like us fans.’
Sae Bomi had retreated back to her mansion; refusing to be interviewed by the newspaper. It is rumored that yesterday was the first day that she had come out of the mansion in a few years.”
“I CAN LOVE HIM!”
I threw the paper down on the table in frustration and tears started pouring out of my eyes.
“I can love him…I can…”
I buried my head in my arms, attracting the attention of my maids who started to crowd around me, patting my back. My maids understood my past and everything. They were my most trusted people. One came up to me and tapped me on the shoulder; I wiped my tears away and looked at her, who looked worried.
“Mistress, there’s a bunch of people outside the mansion gates.”
I drew away part of the curtains to see a group of people outside my mansion gates. No need to tell you that they were the angry fans of DBSK come to probably trample me to death. I sighed and walked outside. The protest only grew louder when I opened my door and I could hear some of the words shouted by the fans.
“You bitch!”
“Leave our JaeJoong alone!”
“How could you break his heart?!”
I just stood in the middle of my garden, letting all the insults be thrown at me, one by one, one after the one, never seem to be ceasing. My maids tried to tell them to stop because I had something to say. I did; I did have something to say but the fans didn’t listen and kept shouting.
“Stay away from him!”
“I’ll kill you!”
“YOU DON’T LOVE HIM LIKE WE DO!”
That was the last straw.
“I DO LOVE HIM! IT’S BECAUSE I LOVE HIM THAT I’M AVOIDING HIM BECAUSE I DON’T WANT HIS CAREER TO BE LOST! YOU OBSESSED FANS DON’T UNDERSTAND A SINGLE THING THAT’S GONE BETWEEN US! ALL THE SORROW AND SADNESS THAT WE’VE SUFFERED! YOU ARE JUST A BUNCH OF CRAZY, OBSESSED FANS THAT DON’T CARE ABOUT ANYTHING EXCEPT OWNING YOUR IDOLS!”
I saw a parting in the middle of the crowd. There were a couple of police officers in the middle and in the middle of them, was JaeJoong. I stopped; regaining my sanity.
“JaeJoong ah…”
“Open the gate…”
I didn’t want to for a while until he repeated the command again, in a more serious tone. I quickly told one of my maids to open the gate and the police managed to get JaeJoong inside without any fans.
“JaeJoong…”
“Bomi,” he said.
He grabbed my wrist and pulled me into a kiss; a kiss that hadn’t be savoured for years. Happy memories of us together flooded back to me. I pulled away; the fans screaming in protest until the police shot a blank into the air to silence them.
“I loved you Bomi, and I still do. I want us to be like before.”
“But you can’t JaeJoong…you can’t…”
“I can Bomi and I will. I will have you back, because I love you.”
“But JaeJoong ah…”
“Bomi, listen to me, first, you have to calm down. I know you love me and I love you. Nothing, nothing is going to prevent that from happening. Now, you still love me right?”
“Of course!”
“Do you want to be with me again?”
“Yes, I do.”
He held up a piece of paper; it was DBSK’s contract.
“SM changed our contract. We’re allowed…”
“Allowed?”
“Allowed to have a girlfriend.”
Those five words threw open a door of happiness and love for me; the door that was closed years ago when we broke up because of his band. I never thought that SM would allow him to have a girlfriend.
“On some conditions.”
“Which are…?”
“One: We can’t live together. Two: We are only allowed out on a date once a week.”
“Once a week…we can’t live together…”
“I’m sorry Bomi, but it was the best I could do.”
“OK…”
“You agree?”
“Yes.”
“Thank god I have you back Bomi. I’ve loved you for so long without you, it seemed like an eternity.”
He hugged me then; I felt so good to be back in his arms, allowed to be back in his arms.
“I love you JaeJoong.”
“I love you, Bomi.”
“Stay by my side…forever.”
