Jeremy was in the surgery room for about two hours. Outside in the waiting room were his family along with Jeff, Deana and Virginia. “How’s Timmy?” Deana asked.

“He’s in juvenile hall right now. His case will open in a week.” Virginia replied.

“What was his reason for all this?” Joanne spoke up.

“He killed a kid by accident. Remy tried to convince him that he would help but it backfired and the kid pulled out a knife and stabbed him.” Virginia explained.

Tears began to roll down her face again “Damn it! Why him?!”

Deana got up and took a seat next to her friend and placed an arm around her shoulder “Jo, its not anyone’s fault, your brother was just trying to help, he’ll be fine.” She assured her.

“I hope so.” She leaned on her friend’s shoulder “Oh I almost forgot, thanks for taking that stab for my brother. He probably would have died if it wasn’t for you.”

Deana smiled “Don’t be silly, its my job to protect and serve the people. That’s what Lai Sir always taught us.”

“At least now I know you were listening.” Jeff joked. The girls smiled silently as they waited. Finally, after what seemed like hours, the doctor came out. The whole room practically stood up in unison as they walked towards him “How is he?” Jeff was the first to ask.

“He’s doing good. He’s got some fractured ribs, I’m surprised he was strong enough to indulged the stab. He lost quite a lot of blood but that can be replaced in time.”

“Can we visit him?” Joanne asked eagerly.

“Just two at a time. He’s still medicated.” He nodded to the family before leaving them to decide who would enter the room first.

“Mom and Dad, you two go first.” Joanne offered, she knew her parents were worried sick.

The elder couple smiled at their daughter and left the waiting room. The rest of the people sat down patiently. A few of the co-workers left after leaving their condolences with Joanne. She smiled politely as she said goodbye.

They waited for about half an hour until Joanne’s parents came out, the mother was obviously crying. “He looks so peaceful.” She whispered.

“Come on, stop it. Don’t get so sad, he’s okay.” He hugged his wife.

“Dad, mom why don’t you two go home. I’ll stay with Dai Lou.” Joanne offered.

“Yes, go on, I’ll be here too.” Jeff added. The couple smiled and gave a quick nod before leaving.

“Who’s going with me?” Joanne asked.

“I’ll go.” Deana said quickly. The girls disappeared out of the waiting room.

Once again, Virginia sat down as she leaned back in the cushioned chair. She let out a sigh, her hands covering her stomach. “How are you feeling?” Jeff asked.

“Good, I guess. Gosh, I almost lost that kid.” She looked distraught, as if the teenager was her own child or brother.

“You have a good heart.” He comment “Even until the end, you didn’t want to let him go. He could have dragged you with him.”

She smiled grimly “I suppose. But I didn’t want to let go. Maybe its from all this time trying to talk people out of killing themselves, I just find the need to help everyone that comes across my way. Do you think it was the right choice to save him?” her question threw him off.

He looked at her with a confused expression “Why do you say that? Didn’t you just say you wanted to save everyone?”

“Yes, but I wonder if that’s a good choice. I mean what if he’s worse off alive now? He’ll probably go to jail for years, that’ll ruin his life. Even if Remy doesn’t sue him, he’ll be sentenced with manslaughter.”

He smiled “You wonder too much, you know that?”

She nodded “I know.” She closed her eyes to rest them but they snapped open as soon as she heard Freddie’s voice.

“How is he?”

“Stable. He’ll be okay, the doctor said.” Jeff replied.

Freddie let out a sigh of relief “How are you doing?” he asked his friend, who was staring blankly at the ceiling. Her eyes wandered to him as they smiled in reply “Come here.” He opened his arms hinting for a hug.

She reluctantly got up and embraced him, he gave her a slight squeeze “Ow…” she whispered on contact.

“What’s wrong? Are you hurt?” he pulled her away as he stared at her pained expression.

“Im okay.” She said softly but touched her abs slightly.

Jeff stood up immediately “I knew you were hurt. I saw you scrape your body against the ground. I thought it was just your elbow.” He pointed to her bandaged bruise on her elbow.

“Come on, you’re gonna see a doctor.” Freddie exclaimed.

“Stop worry about me, I’ll be fine!” she waved her hand nonchalantly, she was about to sit down but Freddie grabbed her free arm and practically yanked her out of the waiting room.

“You’re coming with me.” He called the nearest nurse, making a scene about her being hurt. Virginia shook her head with a smile when he found a wheelchair nearby and pulled her down into it. He pushed her to the open room where the nurse directed them to.

**************

Joanne stared at her brother’s peaceful face while tears crept through her eyes “I almost lost him.” She said softly. Touching his smooth cheeks and brushing a few strands of hair away from his eyes.

“He’s fine now.” Deana said as she watched with envy. She was the only child in her family and always dreamed about having a brother or sister to talk to.

Joanne’s touch triggered his movement as his eyes opened up “Jo..” he said with a wide grin. He reached up a weak hand and pulled her in for a hug. He felt her shiver as she tried unsuccessfully to hold back the tears. “Silly girl, don’t cry. Im okay.” He assured her. “You’re making Deana cry now.”
Deana wiped her tears “No, no…Im just touched by your brother and sisterly love. Im the only child so…don’t mind me.” She said awkwardly. She wasn’t even sure what she could say.

“Come here.” Jeremy waved for her to come over.

“Me?” Deana pointed to herself.

“No, the ghost beside you.” He teased. “Of course you!” She walked over while Joanne moved aside letting her brother embrace his heroine. “Thanks for saving my life.” He whispered into her hair.

“Anytime.” She said before moving back, tears welling up in her eyes.

“Oh don’t cry! You’re making me depressed.” He smiled showing them that he was okay “Where’s my buddy? And Ginny?”

Joanne smiled “Is that who you wanted to see?” she teased. “They’re outside, I’ll go get them.”

“Yeah, I should go too.” Deana said “Take care.” She gave his hand a squeeze before leaving the room with Joanne.

************

Freddie supported Virginia back into the waiting room. She was trying to push him away because he was mothering her so bad. “Im fine!!” she eventually yelled.

“The doctor said you had 10 burns on your abs, you’re not fine!” he argued. She rolled her eyes as she let him baby her, they walked back to the waiting room and found another person sitting with Jeff. “Ga jei?”

“Hi. I got the message you left me.”

Freddie smiled “I see. Wait let me guess, you two know each other from high school right?”

Linda smiled “How did you guess?”

“Well lets see, Jeff and Jeremy are best friends which means they probably went to high school together. Considering the fact that you know Jeremy, Im assuming that you would know Jeff too.” He smiled at his observation.

“You should really be a detective. What a waste of a great mind.” Virginia said saracastically as she took a seat, turning her head to look away from the dirty glare that he gave her.

Linda and Jeff laughed “What’s so funny?” Joanne asked.

“You.” Freddie said flatly.

She leered her eyes at him “I could beat you up right here since we’re in the hospital, you’ll need expert help when Im done with you.”

He rolled his eyes “Lame comeback.”

“Anyways, my brother is awake, he wants to see Jeff and Virginia.”

“Of course he does.” Freddie commented. Virginia gave him a stern look before letting Jeff escort her out of the room “Sure, he can help you.” He snickered. She threw him another evil glare but bit her tongue.

“Don’t mind him, Im sure he was just teasing.” Jeff said.

“I know.” She smiled “You don’t have to help me, I can walk on my own. My feet are fine.”

He shook his head “Nope, if Remy wants to see you then I have to bring you there in one piece.”

When they entered the room, they found him sitting up staring out the window “Hey there stranger, how you feeling?” Virginia asked.

“Better now that you’re here.” He smiled as he brought out his arms to hug her, she took his invitation and embraced him. “And you.” Virginia pulled away when he pointed to his friend. “Come here.” He yanked at his arm and hugged him roughly.

“Not so tight, she might get jealous.” Jeff teased when Jeremy wouldn’t let go. He sensed something wrong from his friend, but knew he wouldn’t say anything with Virginia there.

“Oh, I almost forgot about the pretty lady.” He pushed his friend away and smiled broadly at Virginia “So how are you?” he nodded to her bandaged arm.

“Just a few cuts and bruises.”

“How’s Timmy?” his main concern was still the boy.

“We saved him.” Jeff smiled “She was great. There I was busy holding down your sister and forgot all about the boy that wanted to kill himself. He might be charged with man slaughter. Maybe 18 years max.”

Jeremy let out a sigh “He’s so young and he was beginning to turn out to be a good kid until that bully went too far.”

“Well, don’t think about it too much. You get your rest because next week, the lawyers might ask you to testify. Your words are the most important for Timmy, since you probably don’t want to see him sentenced for life in prison.” Virginia pointed out.

He nodded “Yeah, I know.”

“Well, I’ll be on my way, don’t want to bother you too much. Im sure you two probably want to talk.” The guys glanced at each other wondering how she knew “Hey, Im not a shrink for no reason.” She smiled “Take care.” She nodded to Jeremy and left the hospital.
