She hung up the phone with Jeff still smiling at the conversation. Its been a while since she actually had a real conversation due to the fact that she was so involve with her work. She gathered her belongings and was ready to leave when someone knocked on her door. “Come in.” she said.

“Ah, Dr. Chan, Im glad you’re not gone yet, let me introduce to you Dr. Marc Cheung. He will be joining our staff very soon, actually next week.” Mr. Lo was the office manager and who was also responsible for hiring new people.

Virginia welcomed the new person with a smile “Nice to meet you.” She put out a hand as he shook it.

He returned the smile “Its great to finally met you, Mr. Lo has told me so much about you. Sounds like I need to work hard to live up to your reputation.”

She blushed at the compliment “Im sure it won’t take you long, Dr. Cheung.”

“Oh don’t call me that, we’re co-workers now, call me Marc.”

She nodded in reply. “Well, I must be on my way.”

“Oh of course.” He moved aside for her to leave. “She seems very nice.” He commented to Mr. Lo.

“Oh she is.” He glanced at Marc who was still staring after Virginia “I advise you not to be too interested, although she’s never had a boyfriend, she is in no rush to start dating nor get married. Out of the six years that I worked here, I’ve never seen her with a boyfriend. Just her gay roommate.”

Marc raised his eyebrows “Gay roommate? Wow, she sure is different alright.”

Virginia reached in her purse for her car keys, her face wrinkling when she couldn’t find it. She practically stuck her whole head in the purse to look for them, never seeing the figure walking right into her. She instantly dropped her bag to the ground causing everything to splatter. “Im sorry.” A male voice apologized.

“Its okay.” She looked up and smiled “You? We must stop bumping into each other like this. Remy, was it?”

He nodded “Good memory.”

“I heard Sir Lai call you that.”

“I didn’t catch your name.”

“Virginia but my friends call me Ginny.” She stuff the remaining handful of junk into her purse and stood up.

“Well, Ginny. Since I keep hurting you, how about we go out to dinner as an apology? My treat.” He offered.

She smiled in return “I would love to, but I want to go home and see my roommate. He’s not doing to well lately.”

Jeremy couldn’t hide the obvious disappointment on his face “Oh, well, that’s okay.”

“Maybe some other time?” she offered. He nodded in reply. Then she realized that he was going into her building “You work here?”

He nodded “Yeah, on the first floor, but it looks like we’ll be moving to the third floor.”

“I work on the third floor!” She said in surprise.

“Really? I thought there was a psychiatric office there?”

She nodded “Yes, there is. Im a psychiatrist.”

His eyes widened “Really? Wow, but you’re so young?”

She laughed “Young doesn’t mean that I can’t be a doctor does it?”

Jeremy nodded “Well, I won’t keep you any longer, I’ll see you around.”

“Yes. Good night.” She turned and rushed to her car. Virginia was anxious to see how here friend was doing. When she got home, it was empty. She figured Freddie wasn’t home yet. She put down her stuff and changed into her pajamas. Walking out to the kitchen to find something to eat, instead she found a note on the door. It was from Freddie ‘Hi doll, gotta run some errands. So I’ll be back soon. Have some potato salad for now. Luv ya!’

She smiled and opened the fridge to find the carefully wrapped container with the beautifully made up salad. She pulled it out and grabbed a fork from the drawers and started eating.

***********

Freddie met up with his sister and brother at the restaurant in downtown. He was the first to get there as he sat by himself waiting for them to come. He twirled the straw inside his cup of ice water as he sighed to himself.

“Aww….if it isn’t the half and half all by himself. What’s wrong, where’s your friend?”

He instantly recognized that annoying, teasing voice. His eyes steered up as it glared back at the eyes that teased him so “I am in no mood she-boy.” He said coldly. There was something about that girl that made his blood boil.

“Ooooh, Im sooo scared.” She shivered in exaggerated fear as she walked by him with a bunch of her friends who were laughing with her.

He sneered at her and returned to his water, when he looked up to check on his brother and sister he saw them walking through the door. He quickly stood up and waved to them. “You’ve been waiting a long time, yee gor?” Michael asked.

Linda took a seat and looked at him “What do you want? We’re trying to take care of Daddy’s funeral.” She sounded curt.

“That’s what I wanted to talk to you guys about. I want to help.”

“Sure.” Michael said quickly as he glanced at his sister “Ga Jei, its okay right?”

“Actually, we have all the help we need” she said shortly, never looking at Michael.

Freddie nodded understandingly “How’s mom?”

“She’s a mess, yee gor. You have to come home and see her.” Michael said.

“I will.”

Linda looked a bit uncomfortable “I don’t think you should see her. She might have a heart attack too.” She felt the need to be over protected of her remaining parent.

Freddie sighed, he was tired of the sibling rivalry “Look, she is still my mother, I have the right to see her. If it wasn’t for the fact that you told me to never come back home when I moved out, I wouldn’t have waited this long to see father.”

“What? So you’re blaming me for all this?” her tone rising “I wasn’t the one that became a homosexual and caused my parents grief and worries.”

Michael touched his sister’s arm to stop her from talking “Ga jei, please don’t. I know yee gor didn’t want to do that. Although I don’t agree with you being gay, I have learned to accept it. Why can’t you? Daddy would want that from us.” He nodded solemnly. Michael turned to Freddie “Don’t be mad at ga jei, she was dumped by her boyfriend who turned out to be a homosexual but he never told her about it until they almost got married.”

Freddie looked surprised “Tony was gay?” he remembered his sisters boyfriend, they were so happy looking.

Linda’s face turned red as she remembered the situation “That jerk! Don’t talk about him anymore.”

Freddie finally understood the reason why she resented him so much, “Ga jei, I know that it must hurt to have to lose your boyfriend to homosexuality, but its not the reason to hate me so much.”

She sighed “I don’t hate you. I can never hate you, you’re my brother.”

It was the most sisterly thing she has ever said to him that it touched his heart “Thank you, just to hear you say that makes me happy.” He smiled at his sister for the first time in so long.

Michael smiled as he looked from one person to the other “There, that’s much better, now we’re talking like brothers and sisters.”

Linda shook her head with a grin on her face “Dad would be very proud. Fred, you want to help us with the funeral?” she offered.

He laughed “I thought you had enough help?” he teased.

“Sure if you count me and Michael. Mom’s too depressed to worry about this. Our aunts and uncles seemed to have disappeared after daddy passed away.”

He snickered “They were always there for a show anyways. Let me know what I can do.”

Linda nodded as they continued to chat about old times and the few years that he missed out on the family stuff. After they had their meal, they all ordered desert “We never had such a nice dinner before.” Michael was giddy as he commented.

Linda and Freddie glanced at each other and shook their heads “This should have happened a long time ago.” Linda said. Her eyes were diverged when she spotted a girl with very short hair who kept turning her head over to their table “Do you know that girl, Fred?” she nodded her head towards the bar.

Freddie raised his eyebrows and turned his full body around and was eye to eye with Joanne. He rolled his eyes dramatically and spun back on his chair “Her? I almost got in a fight with her the other night at a bar.”

Michael and Linda chuckled “You? And her?” Michael couldn’t believe his brother “What happened, did you hit her?”

“No, I wanted to but my friend stopped me.”

“Looks like another fight is going to start.” Linda whispered when she noticed Joanne and her group walking towards their table.

“Look guys, a she-demon and more freaks.” The group burst out laughing.

Linda looked offended as she glared at the girl “Maybe you should look in the mirror before you call someone a freak.” She snapped back.

Michael and Freddie muffled a laugh while Joanne didn’t falter, her eyes narrowed as she answered “Takes one to know one.” Her eyes veered towards Freddie then it darted back to Linda who was staring at her. It looked like she was studying her face “What are you looking at?” she asked haughtily.

“Im still trying to figure that out.” Linda said smartly. The guys burst out laughing as they could not hold it much longer “Come on, she just ruined my appetite.”

She linked arms with her brothers and walked out leaving Joanne flabbergasted and red in the face. Her friends eventually dragged her out of the restaurant.

Outside, the three laughed their hearts out “I forgot how vicious you could be!” Freddie exclaimed.

Linda smiled “No one picks on my brothers but me!”

Freddie glanced at his watch “Wow, its getting late. I’ll meet up with you guys tomorrow to plan it out.”

“Okay. See you then.” The other two said in unison.

Freddie drove home feeling better than he’s ever felt in ages. They were getting along, it was sad that a death had to occur for it to happen. He was quiet in opening the door, not wanting to wake up Virginia. He found her asleep on the couch, smiling as he reached for a blanket and covered her with it. His sudden movement woke her up as she stretched and opened her eyes “Hey you.”

“What are you doing sleeping out here?” his tone scolding.

“I like the couch.” She sat up in the seat “Had a nice dinner?”

His smile broadened at the thought of it “It was great! I had dinner with my sister and brother.”

“Really? Tell me about it.” She was interested and she noticed that her friend seemed happier than ever. He began telling her about how he saw the ‘she-boy’ again. They stayed up most of the night talking about his feelings.
