The next morning, Freddie left for home so he could help plan out the funeral for his dad. Virginia had no where to go but she was in no mood to stay home, so she drove out to the beach and decided to go for a long walk. It was nice to not think of work, she never realized how depressed the lives of the people around her were. Freddie was pretty much her light, he was always smiling and joking with her. But somewhere deep inside her, she had a feeling that he was going to move out. She wouldn’t be the one to hold him back either since he does belong with his family.
Virginia’s thoughts were quickly interrupted by people running by her. She was sitting at the edge of the beach and noticed a huge crowd was gathering at the pier. Curiosity taking over as she pushed herself from the sand and followed the group to the end of the pier. She expected to find a fish someone had caught or maybe a person putting on a show for money. Instead to her dismay, she found a guy holding a knife at the neck of a girl. His eyes were crazy and his hand was holding the knife which was laying on a girl's neck.
“Don’t come closer, I’ll kill her!!” he cried as he pointed the knife at the crowd then at the girl again. They inched closer to the end of the pier until the two finally hit the rail. “Get away!!” he striked the tiny knife in the air towards the crowd.
Virginia thought frantically, she wasn’t trained for people holding someone hostage. She found a guy close by with a cell phone “Call the police now.” She whispered, he was quick to respond as he began dialing a number. She bumped her way through the crowd that was growing. She finally reached closer as she notice the guy. She knew him “Jim?” she said it absentmindedly.
“Ginny?” he focused his eyes on her as he began to smile and suddenly remembered the hostage in his arms. “No! No! I will not listen to you…go away!” he exclaimed.
She put up her hands “Jim, what’s wrong? Why are you holding her hostage?” she asked calmly.
He looked devastatingly depressed “I don’t know, I guess she’s just unlucky. She asked if I needed help.”
“So you took her hostage?” Virginia asked.
“I don’t need help! I don’t!!” he cried angrily.
“I know you don’t. I saw you get better myself. What happened?” she tried to keep him talking but soon the police came and pushed the crowd away. She felt a strong hand on her shoulder as she turned around “Jeff?”
“Virginia. What are you doing here?” he forgot about the victim.
She nodded towards Jim “He was an old friend from high school.”
Jeff turned to Jim and the girl “Let the girl go and we promise you won’t be hurt.” He tried to reason with the mad guy.
Jim snickered “Im not stupid just a little crazy. I hate men, when I see them, it makes me want to kill everyone.” He looked dangerously crazy as his eyes wandered from girl to girl.
Virginia turned to Jeff “Go on, I’ll get him to calm down.”
“Its too dangerous.” He said with full concern. “Deana, stay with her. Make sure she’s okay.” He commanded. “Be careful.” He whispered before following the crowd that was pushed down the pier.
Deana looked as scared as the girl that was being held hostage, she stood behind Virginia as she watched in horror. “I guess I should be happy. I get to see three beautiful women before I die. Well, make that two since you’re going to die with me.” He snarled at the girl.
The girl whimpered in fear as she began to cry “Help me.” She whispered. Too afraid to speak.
“What do you want with her? You don’t even know her. Please, let her go.” Deana pleaded.
Jim smiled “Sure, if you switch places with her.”
Deana glanced at Virginia and began walking towards Jim, ready to take on his words. She was trained to always help the victim, their safety comes first since they are weaker then the officers. Virginia held up her arm to stop Deana “No. Jim, if you want someone to die with you, take me.”
He shook his head “You can’t be harm. But I don’t mind having that cutie behind you.”
Deana pushed Virginia’s blocked arm down “Let me trade places with her. She’s innocent, I’ll diverge his attention.” She whispered. Virginia still disagreed but she didn’t know what else they could do. Jim was crazier then the last time she found him. Deana began walking towards him slowly. She held up her hands “I won’t make any sudden movement. Just let her go.”
His eyes were glued to hers as he violently pushed the girl away, Virginia caught the scared girl in her arms “Go now.” She urged as the girl happily obliged and ran towards the officers. Jim pulled Deana by the arm and twisted her around, the knife was close to the throat.
“Now that’s better.” He said with crazy eyes as he smiled at Deana, who tried to stay calm but her body deceived her because it was shaking. “Don’t be scared.” His face full of concern as he used his free hand to smooth her face. “It’ll be really fast.”
“No.” she whimpered as he eyes darted to Virginia “Why does anyone have to die?”
He laughed “Everyone has to die! Right Ginny? You’re a Dr., you should know that. I believe your exact words were ‘Everyone will have to die sometime in their lives, its just a matter of when.’ You will be happy to know that I remember everything you told me.”
Virginia smiled in return “Im happy to know that. Jim, have I ever told you to kill someone?”
He looked confused “No, if you did, I would have done it in a second.”
“Let me ask you. Why do you listen to me?” she asked calmly.
“Because you’re the only that wants to listen to me.” He replied a matter of factly.
“Yes, so Im listening, tell me what happened in the past three years. When you left for America, you looked so good. No one would have known you were in an insane asylum.”
Deana’s eyes widened ‘He’s an escaped nut?!’ she thought to herself.
“That’s what I thought. My girlfriend couldn’t even tell.” His eyes glossed over “She was really cute, you would have liked her. She kinda looks like her” he pointed the knife at Deana “Its such a shame…tsk tsk tsk, she found out about my past. She began to fear me, every little thing I said, every movement I made, she was startled and constantly cried. I couldn’t stand it anymore!!!”
“You killed her?” Deana whispered.
“Hmph! I wish I would have, but I didn’t have the heart to. She eventually left without saying goodbye. I was devastated. What’s worse is that she called a mental institute and told them to come get me. I was stuck in that hell hole for almost 3 years!! Ginny, remember what I said to you before I left?”
She looked solemn as she recalled his words “If I ever go back in is the day I’ll give up my life.”
He smiled “That’s what I like about you! You actually listen. Well, look at me now! Im giving up, true to my words aren’t I?” he smile slowly faded “You know how I got out?” Virginia shook her head afraid to even ask “I killed everyone in that place with a plastic fork.” She winced at the description and the visual picture that popped in her head.
“Oh my God…” Deana whispered, tears dripping from her eyes.
“Just kidding!!” he exclaimed happily “I didn’t have to kill them.” Virginia let out a sigh of relief “They let me out themselves. I tried to act as normal as I can be in that time period so they would let me out. I had to prove that I wasn’t crazy! It took almost three God damn years!!! For crying out loud, do I look crazy???!!” his eyes bulged out of its socket as he asked her “Wait, don’t answer that.” He said calmly and a smile crept up his face again. “So what are we going to do now?” he asked from one girl to the other. “You want to say good bye?”
“Why does anyone have to say goodbye?” Deana asked “I mean, if you didn’t kill anyone, you won’t have to go to jail.” She reasoned.
He laughed “Silly, naïve little girl. Even if they don’t put me in jail, they’ll eventually put me back into that nut house they call a mental institute. Those people are vicious, they don’t try to help you, they make you go more crazy.”
“I’ll help you then. I’ll ask my captain for exception for you.”
“Yes, Jim, I’ll talk to him too, Im sure he’ll understand.”
“You’ll help me?” he asked the girls “Why do you want to help me?” he asked Deana, the knife still dangerously close.
“Because I want to.” She said simply “That’s what life is all about you know, helping others. I believe that if you help someone, someone will help you. It’s a cycle that no one seems to get. I promise, I will help with whatever you want me to help you with.” She said honestly.
He was silent as he slowly lowered the knife and with a swift turn of the body he tossed the knife into the ocean “I believe you.” He said.
Virginia let out a sigh as he smiled “You won’t regret it.”
As soon as Jeff saw him toss the knife, he pulled out his gun and ran towards them with it aiming to the ground. Virginia turned around and saw him rushing to her, she shook her head hinting to him that they were okay. “Don’t.” she whispered when he got closer and he eventually stopped and put away the gun.
Deana looked nervously at Jim, who was staring adoringly at her. She gave him a slight smile and turned back to Jeff “Lai Sir, its okay. He never meant any harm.”
He let out a sigh of relief. “So what do you want me to do with him” he asked Virginia.
She shrugged “Let him go?” she asked.
He smiled “I trust your instincts. Okay, I won’t report this to my authorities.” She smiled thankfully “Deana, you okay?”
She smiled “Of course. Jim wouldn’t hurt me.” She looked over at Jim.
“Hurt the mother of my children? I would never think of it.” Deana looked away shyly, it was the first time any guy flirted with her like that. Most of her teammates were married, the only available guy was the captain, yet he seem to be interested in Virginia.
“I don’t know about you guys, but Im still not done with my walk on the beach. I’ll see you guys later.” Virginia said before disappearing down the pier.
Jeff and Deana looked at each other wondering what to do next. “Do you have a home?” she asked Jim.
He smiled “If you count a cardboard box down the alley behind Fuk Shing Restaurant.”
“Oh.” She said before glancing up at Jeff, who seemed motionless as he stared out at the beach. “You want to move in with me? I have an extra room in my apartment.” She offered.
Jeff spun around, shocked at what he was hearing. He pulled her to the side “Deana, I don’t think that’s a good idea. He’s…you know.” His eyes widened.
“Im sure he won’t hurt me. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine.” She said firmly. “Come on, I’ll take you back.” She said to Jim, who’s attitude suddenly changed like a little puppy as he skipped down the pier happily.
Jeff was staring at Virginia who was walking further and further from the pier, eventually he left since she was out of eye sight.
