Andy and Julie were discussing the plans with Rob when Gary popped in “Guess who’s here?” he sang happily.
Julie turned and saw her sister walking in with Will “Ga Jei!” she exclaimed with excitement before pouncing on her sister. They giggled like old friends “I’m so glad you’re okay.”
Will cleared his throat and Julie just ignored him while she chatted on with her sister “I’m glad your back too Will!” he mocked.
Andy laughed as his head shook back and forth “I’m glad you’re safe, Will.”
“Thank you!” Will cried with his hands flapping to his sides.
Andy turned to Rob “This is Will, another FBI turned spy.”
Rob shook Will’s hand “Nice to meet you, Andy’s told me plenty about you. I’m glad you’ve joined our forces.” His eyes wandered to Leann who stood close to David “And this must be Miss Leann Fung?”
Leann nodded with a smile “Yes.”
“You understand that there are no outsiders who are allowed to be in the Unit?” her smile slowly faded as she comprehended what he was trying to say “The penalty is death…”
The group turned to Leann with a worried look “Rob, she is innocent…” Andy began.
Rob turned to the group with a solemn face “You all should know the rules by now, especially you, Andy being the senior spy here.” He paced slowly with authority “There is one thing…” everyone turned to him with hope “There are no rules saying that the family of a spy cannot stay here.”
This time everyone turned to David seeing that there was an obvious connection between the two. Cass smiled at Leann as she spoke up “If you two get married, it would not be breaking the rules. Think of it as acting in a movie? When this war is over, you two can forget about the marriage, that way you won’t be obligated to stay with David.” She gave her fellow spy a little knowing wink.
David only smiled at her “I will respect any decision you have.” He said to Leann.
The outspoken girl, who found herself lost for words “I…I don’t have any comments. If that is what I have to do, then I will…marry you.” She nodded.
Julie clapped her hands “Great! We need some good news…even if it is fake.” She quickly added when Leann began to blush. “This is gonna be so much fun!!” she squealed with excitement. Her sister and Andy grinned at her response.
The wedding was small and cozy, because it was a ‘fake’ marriage, not many were invited. It was taken place at the Unit where Rob was the witness and the person who performed the ceremony. Leann wore a simple white dress while David wore his white suit uniform. They looked like a match made in heaven. The group drank until the late hours. It was not only a celebration of a wedding, it was the last day they would be able to have any fun. The war with the machines was inching closer by each day. They all partied hard knowing that the following days would only bring on more death and destruction.
While everyone drank and talked, Julie snuck away to an area where the night sky was visible; a room that they used for an emergency exit if they were ever under attack. She learned of this room during on of the long talks she had with Andy. She noticed the moon was extra bright that night. Because this room was made of solid steel, it trapped in the cold air from the night. She wrapped her arms around her body. Suddenly she felt a warm coat covering her bare shoulders. “What are you thinking about?” Andy asked as he placed his arm around her.
She smiled as she turned to the night moon “Sometimes I wonder why we were put into this life of suspense and danger. You think if we had normal lives, it would be better?”
Andy let out a sigh “There are too many ‘what ifs’ in this world. You don’t ask why something has to happen, you simply embrace it. If you take it in and accept your destiny, you will realize there is a reason for everything. We are blessed to be the chosen ones to fight this war and possibly save mankind. If we die, I believe it is fate that mankind is to be run by a dictator and his machines.”
Julie pulled herself away from her entrancement of the moon, she turned to Andy “Are you scared?”
He shook his head “No. My only fear is that if we die, I won’t ever see you again.” Andy was honest as can be and it made her heart flutter in fear. She leaned against his chest as his arms came protectively around her waist “We’ll be okay.” He said with much confidence.
*****************
For the next two months, the Unit was at high alert. Everyone was in training for the battle day, which would be the day Andy was finished with his training. The top spies went through beginning courses of training to advanced. Julie preferred to practice on her own. She seldom saw Andy since no one was allowed to be in the same room with him except for James and Rob. Although she was worried since she heard that he was constantly exhausted from the new weapon. He would practice three hours and then fall asleep.
It was James’s suggestion to keep Andy away from everyone especially Julie since he would be easily distracted. Even though Julie understood, she found herself missing him terribly. It seems that everyone else had their own companions. Cass and Will were training together while Gary and David continued their partner training. Leann was allowed to watch since she was now David’s wife.
Julie tend to stay in one of the quietest training rooms. It was dimmed with little light and the weapons they had were hung from the walls. She found herself growing attached to something they called ‘The Bleeder’ which was equivalent to a sword. But this weapon was much sharper as it could cut through stone as well as steel and it was thin as can be. She practiced for hours with The Bleeder and soon perfect this weapon. She knew its uses were great if she would put her effort in it.
One day while she practiced her stances, she heard the door to the practice room screech open. Her back was turned as she flipped back towards the door, The Bleeder swoosh in the air as it came pointing to the intruder. She snapped her head to the shadow and noticed her sword was millimeters from Andy’s neck. She pulled the weapon away as she touched his neck “Andy!”
He smiled as he shook his head “I’m okay.” He touched her hand, which was grazing his neck “Someone’s been practicing overtime. You’re getting quick.”
Julie smiled “Just a little.” She returned the sword in its place. “How did you escape?” she teased.
Andy laughed “Actually, it’s a surprise day off. James and Rob were in a meeting therefore I couldn’t train. So what more would I want to do but to spend it with my beautiful girlfriend?”
“Sweet-talker.” She joked. They walked out from the Unit and caught sight of Will and Cass coming their way. “Looks like I’m the popular one today.”
When they came closer, Julie saw the solemn expressions on their faces “What’s wrong?” Andy asked.
“They’re coming our way.” Cass sighed.
“How? How could they have found us…” Julie turned to Andy “Leann.” She said bluntly. “How could we be so stupid!! I should have known, since I was a victim of Leo’s homing device.”
Andy tapped her on the shoulder “It’s not anyone’s fault, no one thought of it. We were so busy trying to help her.” He turned to his long time partner, Cass “How is she taking it? Assuming that Leann knows.”
Will nodded “She does. She over heard David and Rob talking. She feels awful. It’s been removed but it’s useless since they already found us.”
“How long until they reach us?” Julie was afraid to ask.
“3 hours.” Cass said shortly “We have our lookout crew, the machines are slowing them down. They would have been here by now. How is your training?”
“I’ve gotten about 80% down, but there is still more. This weapon is complicated as it is dangerous.” Andy said. “Have you guys talked to Rob?”
“No, we came to get you guys first.” Will said.
The four walked back to Rob’s office. They found James inside, the two seemed to be involved in their conversation. Rob spotted the group “Come in.” he waved to them. “James and I were just discussing the tactics for diverging them long enough for Andy to finish his training.”
“What do you need us to do?” Cass asked.
Rob stood up and nodded “They are coming from the east. So we should cover the other three quadrants. Will and Cass, you two take the South. David and Gary will take the North and Julie, take the West.”
Andy turned to Rob with a worried expression “There’s no one else that will help Julie?”
Rob smiled warmly “I know you are worried for her. Don’t be distracted from your training. I’ve seen her these past two months, she has improved in every aspect of a spy should learn. I trust she will be able to defend herself. We will have our own army of backup to help them.” He patted Andy on the shoulder “Concentrate on your training for now.” He nodded to James as he got up and led Andy back to the training center. Andy gave Julie a glance as she nodded firmly indicating for him not to worry.
“Should I get Gary and David?” Cass offered.
Rob shook his head “They are getting ready. Why don’t you three go and set up? I’ll meet you at the white room.”
The three took their orders to get prepared. Julie raced back to her training room as she grabbed The Bleeder. When she reached the white room, it was jammed pack with spies in white suits. Rob stood in the front as he commanded everyone “Now, everyone should know where they are to be covering. Remember, we are not to let any machine or human for that matter slip through the cracks. This will not be a pretty one, be careful and fight with no mercy. I hope we will all meet again.” He bowed his head and then pulled it up “Good luck, everyone.”
The group saluted him with a palm at the heart, the Unit’s secret code to each other. They began to scatter sequentially. Cass and Julie crossed paths as they hugged each other “Be careful!” Cass said almost in tears.
Julie pulled away as her eyes were red too “I will.” She turned to Will “Take care of her.”
“I will.” He said firmly.
The three split up in their own directions as they finally saw daylight. Julie stood with her army of 100 men and women of the Unit. Her breathing quickened when she began to feel the earth tremble from the giant machines coming their way.
Will and Cass were closest to the where the machines were stomping from. They had over 100 spies behind them. Cass took a step back when she saw the first sign of the machines. They stepped their way closer to them while Will reached down and gave her hand a squeeze. Their eyes met and it said a thousand words, they both gave a quick nod as Cass commanded the army behind her “Get ready!” she cried.
Gary paced back and forth as he held tight to his laser gun. “Stop it, you’re making me nervous!” David cried.
“Just aim and shoot…aim and shoot.” Gary mumbled to himself over and over.
David then realized how nervous his partner really was. He sighed and tapped him on the shoulder “Don’t be scared…”
Gary laughed “I’m not scared…just a little nervous. We’ve never been in battle before.”
David nodded “Don’t worry, I’ll cover you every chance I get.”
“You better start now.” Gary said with widened eyes. He pointed behind David. They’re here.”
David raised his right hand in the air “Ready?!!” he asked the army behind him “Don’t let one pass you.”
“Yes sir!!” the group roared.
Julie stood in her place as she began pacing nervously. She could hear the battle going on just miles away to her left and right. She wondered how they were doing and if they were safe. But she could not leave her cover, all they could do was wait and pray that everything was going as planned. She closed her eyes when she heard cries of pain coming from her fellow spies. The machines were ripping them apart. It wasn’t until she heard one of her men cry “There’s one!” did she open her eyes.
She whipped out The Bleeder as it pointed to the ground “Get ready!” she cried as she gripped the handle harder. The machine came charging towards them and Julie raised her sword in the air. It was their cue to attack as the first group of 10 began shooting away their guns. She stood there, her heart thumping and her brows furrowed. She didn’t remember them being so strong. It took a good 10 minutes for her people to destroy the one machine that got away.
When the monster fell to it’s death, the army began to jump up and down in victory. “Hooray!!” they cried happily. But Julie knew it was only the beginning. She raised her sword at the sign of another machine coming and another before she realized how many there were, the group was already being attacked. She dodged from each punch and laser beam that was shot her way.
The army with Gary and David were quickly defeated within an hour as only a handful actually survived the battle. Gary was injured while David supported him as they retrieved to Will and Cass’s battleground.
By the time they reached the place, it was more horrific than their own battle. Body parts spread everywhere. Some were still alive but might as well be dead since they were missing arms or legs. They found Will scarred on the forehead and his lips were bleeding. He was holding only Cass, who was knocked out unconscious. “Will! Cass?” Gary called. The two fell to their knees next to Cass “Is she…” Gary was afraid to say it.
Will shook his head “No, she was knocked out.” He touched the purple bump on her forehead. “You okay?” he asked Gary.
“She’s waking!” David exclaimed. “Cass.” He reached down and tapped her over the face.
Cass looked up but flinched in pain when her bump pounded like a horrible migraine. “Will…” she smiled, glad to see him. “You two are okay…” she said slowly to Gary and David. She sat up straight and looked around. Her smile faded “So much killings…Julie?!” she suddenly cried, startling Will. “Is she okay?” she squeezed his arm to give herself support to stand up. “We have to get to her.”
The two nodded “Come on.” Will wrapped his arms around Cass as they rushed to Julie.
