The following day, which would have been any normal day for Kathy was suddenly changed. After saving the big boss of Red Dragon gang, she had a sudden fear for her life. Her daily routine was filled with fear as she walked to the subway at 7:30am to go to school. She saw a bunch of guys looking at her direction but she pretended not to see. Her hands were trembling by the time she left the subway station. She practically sprinted to safety. When she was a block away from the university, she felt at ease but not for long.
Her face froze when she saw one of the guys on the subway staring at her as he leaned on the stone wall of one of the buildings in the university. “Katie right?” he asked still unsure if she was who he was looking for.
“Kathy.” She said blankly.
Out of no where, four other guys joined the guy who seemed to be in charge. His hair was a crisp blond and it was spiked up all the way. “Of course, Kathy. Only Mel Gor calls you Katie right?”
“Mel Gor?” Kathy was confused. “He sent you guys here to finish me off?”
The guy with the bleach blond hair laughed hysterically with the others joining him “Finish you off? Oh no, sweetheart…he likes you. He sent us here to watch out for you.”
“I don’t need bodyguards.” She said hesitantly, still unsure of their true motives.
“I’m sorry Miss Kathy, we have orders from Mel Gor. He will kill us if we don’t protect you.” The guy spoke so solemnly like they were in some kind of a cult.
Kathy shook her head while backing towards the school entrance “Uh…well, could you go back and thank him for me?…I”
Before she even finished, the blond guy snapped his finger at one of the guys “You heard her, go tell Mel Gor.”
“Yes.” One of the small guys ran away.
Kathy was beginning to feel awfully strange “I’m going to go to class. You guys can’t follow me inside though.”
“We’ll just be outside. Scream if you need us.” The guy said with a smile.
Kathy looked at them with wrinkled forehead but walked towards her class. Every now and then she would turn back and found the four walking in a line. When she stopped they stopped. Some of the students were looking at her funny “Could you guys not make it so obvious? People are staring at us.” She turned to the head blond guy.
The guy looked around and found a couple looking at them as he widened his eyes and tilted his head back “What the hell are you two looking at?” The couple was instantly feared as they briskly walked away “No more staring.” He turned to Kathy with a grin.
“Don’t scare people to death. I want to take away the attention not build it!” she marched to her class room feeling frustrated. Her seat was near the door where the guys stood watching, they would take a step closer whenever someone came near her.
At one point, the teacher came around to inspect everyone’s drawings. He was impressed with Kathy’s work and gave her a pat on the back. Instantly the guys worked fast as they entered the room, the blond guy took the hand that was touching Kathy and yanked it to the back of the professor’s back. He pushed him against the table roughly and everyone began to scream “Shut up!!” he pointed to the group that was forming in the corner “Don’t ever touch Miss Kathy again.” He threatened.
“What are you guys doing?!!” Kathy cried in shock “Let him go. He was not hurting me.” She pushed the blond guy away and pulled the scared professor up “I’m sorry…they’re crazy. Don’t mind them.” She explained, but the man was still petrified. She pointed to the blond guy “You, out!” then she turned to the other guys “That means you guys too.”
They shrugged but did what she asked. She followed them outside “What were you doing in there??” she asked blond guy.
“My name is Wong.” He said coolly with his hand in his pocket. “And Mel Gor specifically asked us to make sure no one lays a hand on you.”
Kathy combed her fingers through her hair in frustration, she let out a grunt “Oh my gosh! I can’t believe this…you guys…are crazy. You can’t go around beating up anyone that touches me.”
“Why not?” Wong asked not really interested.
“What? So if somebody came up to me and touched my arm, you would chop it off?” Kathy asked incredulously.
“We would if the person was harming you.” He answered flatly. She threw her hands up in defeat. “You don’t believe us?”
“No, I don’t.” she said bluntly “Now if you don’t mind, I have a class to attend. Just stay out here okay?” she shook her head sadly and entered her classroom. She was prepared for the strange glances and snickering not to mention no one wanted to sit next to her.
By the end of the day, Kathy made it through three classes with her ‘bodyguards’ close by. Lucky for her, none of them attacked anyone else. She let out a small yawn after her class was over. She walked towards the exit with the guys close behind. She didn’t have ballet class that night so her only place to go was home. Before she stepped down the flight of stairs at the subway station a hand was placed on her shoulder “Where are you going sweetheart?” a drunken voice asked.
Kathy turned and found her bodyguards laughing away amused by each other’s jokes but none noticed the guy that was harrassing her. She brushed his hand away, his breath reeked of alcohol “Go away.” She began to walk down the steps but this time the guy used all his strength as he grabbed her around the waist and pushed her to the ground. She looked up and the four guys was oblivious to what was happening. She struggled to fight off her attacker screaming and kicking. When his hand began to grope her thigh, she called out for help “Wong! Help me!!!”
The blond haired guy threw down his cigarette as he pulled out a large dagger he had hidden behind his jean jacket, to her horror he and the other guys began to swing their knives at her attacker. The man cried in horrid pain each time the sharp edged hit his back. She scurried away to safely as she watched in shock. Wong took the man’s arm and pulled it up “Today’s your lucky day, you’re gonna be handicap.” Kathy didn’t comprehend his words until he reached the dagger behind and gave it a full swing at the man’s arm.
Blood squirted everywhere and Kathy closed her eyes unable to capture the painful scene before her. The man groaned in pain as they left him bleeding to his death. She felt sick to her stomach at the brutal beating. She pulled herself up and shook her head in horror “You….you guys….chopped….his arm….off….You guys are crazy…” she was in denial at the same time “No…this is a dream…tell me it’s a dream!!”
Wong was smiling before but suddenly his face turned solemn “Is she looking kinda pale?” he asked one of the guys.
“Yeah…I think she’s in shock.”
“I think she’s going crazy…what are we gonna tell Mel Gor?” another guy whispered.
Wong looked down at the ground as he kicked the guy he just chopped the arm off of “Hey, Roach get up. She’s scared.” Kathy’s eyes widened as the guy got up and pulled his real arm out of his t-shirt. “Man…Mel Gor’s gonna kill us!” he pointed out after seeing her scared expression.
The guys began stepping towards Kathy who was inching away “Hey…I’m okay…it was all a joke. See? My arm’s still here. It’s pig’s blood.” He explained slowly.
“A joke?! What is wrong with you people?! Why would you find that amusing?!” she cried with tears in her eyes. She was glad no one was hurt but the joke was not funny to her.
“Hey, we just wanted to prove to you that we keep our words. If anyone dared to hurt you, we would take care of him.” Roach explained coolly. He didn’t know what Mel saw in her, but he seemed to have a liking to her from the way he spoke about her earlier that morning.
“You people are nuts!” she turned and walked away but the guys ran after her. She felt like she was being taunted instead of protected “Where is he?” she asked angrily when they would not let her pass.
“At the Midnight bar having a few drinks with the big bosses. No one’s allowed in there.” Roach said with much caution.
But Kathy was heated up, she didn’t care if he was talking to the president, she would have this problem resolved. She ran into the subway and took the train uptown. She knew exactly where the club was. The guys looked worried as they followed her. She blocked out everything they had to say, all she knew was what she wanted to say to Mel.
She found the bar with ease and entered, she walked straight to the bartender “Mel, where is he?”
The guy looked at her strangely as he pointed to a closed room with a glass window “In there…are you his girlfriend?”
“The hell I am!” Kathy grunted as she charged through the door. Roach and Wong watched in shock as she entered without warning. “What the hell is the matter with you?!” she screamed at Mel. He looked up slowly and instantly noticed her flaring nose. She was definitely angry “Are you like psycho in the head or something?” she pointed to her own head “What are you trying to do? Bring me to an early grave?!”
He cleared his throat and sat back on his seat “It’s nice to see you too, Katie.” He took a sip of his drink “Want something to drink?”
“It’s Kathy. And no, I don’t drink, thank you.” She answered sarcastically.
“If this is a domestic problem, we’ll do our meeting some other time.” One of the big bosses sighed with boredom.
Mel pointed to the man “No, we will continue this now. I want to resolve this before I go back to Hong Kong.” He turned up to Kathy “Can you wait for me outside? I’ll be right out.” He promised.
Kathy turned to the other two men who looked just as dangerous as Mel. She nodded with a nervous grin “Sorry…” she walked outside and Roach closed the door. She came upon the bar with Wong close by her side, afraid she would do something stupid again “I guess I should be happy he didn’t slap me across the face huh?”
Roach heard her comment and laughed “Mel Gor doesn’t hit women.”
Kathy frowned “I don’t believe that. He seems very violent, especially when he has that evil smirk on his face.” She shivered at the thought of the night before.
“It’s just a cover up, he’s a softie when it comes to women.” Wong explained as he ordered a beer “You sure you don’t want anything to drink?”
“Just a coke.” Kathy answered “Thanks.” She added.
“So, you’re the little virgin girl that saved Mel Gor’s life huh?” Roach said with a snicker.
“He told you?” she asked in shock. “And how does he know I’m a virgin.” She was but she felt it was wrong to assume things.
He smiled “Yeah, you got all freaked out when he was pretending to rape you. You don’t smoke and you don’t drink.” He pointed to the cup of coke that Wong handed to her.
“That doesn’t say anything.” She said in her own defense and took a gulp. She didn’t get a chance to swallow it as she spat it back in the cup “Oh crap! What is that? That’s not coke.” She said bluntly and handed it back to Wong.
Wong turned to the bartender “I told you to spike it lightly!” he scolded.
Kathy rolled her eyes at the lame attempt “I could smell or taste alcohol from a mile away. You can’t spike my drink. Can I get a real coke?”
The bartender smiled as he fixed her a coke while she watched “Here you go. Virgin coke.”
“Thanks.” Kathy took a sip this time and nodded in approval. “So, how long will he take?”
Roach shrugged “Sometime they stay in there the whole night. He usually hires a few girls to come and entertain them.”
She wrinkled her nose in disgust “That’s sick.”
“No, that’s biz. You have to keep the bosses happy in order to be happy.” Wong nodded firmly.
“How profound.” She snickered. Her face lit up when the room was suddenly opened. She saw Mel shaking hands with the men, smiles on their faces. Whatever it was, the deal was done. He waved to Roach and snapped his finger indicating for him to walk them out safely. Everything was done without speaking.
“You, come in here.” He pointed to Kathy. She pointed to herself and he nodded. She got off her stool and gave a quick glance at Wong, he only shook his head sadly. Again she found herself fearing for her life.
