Sammie didn’t know when she fell asleep but by the time she woke up, she had forgotten where she was. Bolting upwards in a seated position, Sammie looked around nervously. She saw a framed picture of Matty sitting next to the nightstand and she instantly remembered. The headache quickly reminded her that she had alcohol the night before.

At the thought of Matty, she noticed he was out of bed and a delicious fragrance of eggs and sausage filled her nostrils. She took a deep breath and smiled as she got up and walked outside following the wonderful smell “Hi honey.” She greeted.

Matty turned to her with a grin “Good Morning, sleeping beauty.” He sang sweetly “Did you have a good night sleep?”

She nodded “You can say that…especially when I had the whole bed to myself.” Matty’s smile dropped but he instantly put it back on.

“What do you mean?” he turned with a casual smile.

“You got up in the middle of the night.” She pointed out while crossing her arms, daring him “Just because I was asleep doesn’t mean I didn’t know when you got out of bed. Tell me something…why did you get up?’ she tilted her head with a look of interest.

Matty threw his head back with a laugh as he picked up the two dishes now full of food “Don’t be silly. I just had to go to the bathroom. Now come and eat before you food gets cold.”

Sammie nodded while he brought the dishes out to the dining table “Okay, if you think lying helps.” She sat down across from him and noticed his exasperated roll of the eyes “You don’t have to lie to me Matty. It’s me…Sammie.” She had to remind him of just that. Lately, she’s had a hunch about her old friend but she didn’t have the proof of her guess yet.

“I’m not lying!” he insisted. He began digging into his dish and so did Sammie. After a few minutes of silence, he dropped his fork “How did you know I left?!” he blurted out.

She leaned her elbow on the table and pointed the fork at him “Didn’t your mother ever teach you about table manners?” she scolded lightly.

Matty began stomping his foot uncontrollably “Tell me…you know I don’t like it when you do that.”

“Do what?” Sammie asked innocently.

He pouted “YOU know! The way you circle around my questions making me guess your thoughts. That’s the only time when I think you’re a true woman…so conniving and devious.” Picking up his fork again, he waited for her to continue but she didn’t. He noticed her sly grin and threw another tantrum “You’re enjoying this too much!!”

Sammie smiled as she swallowed the eggs “Okay….okay, you big whiner.” She cleared her throat and clasped her hands together “First of all, your side of the bed was neatly placed back. If it wasn’t for the fact that I’m a soft sleeper, I wouldn’t have noticed if it wasn’t for the neat way you tucked in the sheets.”

“Damn my cleanliness!” he joked with a laugh.

She rolled her eyes “Why?”

He stared at her blankly after a couple of cackles “Because I was born with it?”

Sammie sighed “You know what I’m asking, Matty.” Her tone motherly.

“Sheesh, you’re worse than my mom. If you must know, I don’t like to share the same bed with anyone.” He explained.

She wasn’t the least bit convinced “So you’ve never stayed overnight at a boyfriend’s house or he stayed at yours?”

“Sammie!!” he gasped “That’s a bit personal isn’t it?” he wagged a finger at her.

“Oh please, you’ve never been private about your personal life. Sometimes I have to stop you because you give me too much details.” Sammie retorted.

Matty puckered his lips firmly and turned away “Whatever…I thought you were my girl friend. Girlfriends tell each other everything.”

“Yes, they do. But you’re forgetting something. You’re not a girl.” Sammie said it straight out.

His heart sunk as did his fork again “What a cruel thing to say. You know, out of all the years that I’ve known you and been there for you…” he paused to gulp back the sobs “I…I…thought you would understand more than anyone else in the world.”

Sammie smiled at his drama queen act “Oh don’t pull that on me. I could read you from a mile away. Anyways, you know better than to be offended by what I say.” She gave her watch a glance and did a double take “Oh crap! I have to get to work!”

Matty raised a brow “What would you do without me.” He shook his head while she scrambled to get up. The minute she did, he reached over the table and grabbed her hand as he pulled her back down “It’s Sunday, the lounge is closed.”

“No it’s not….” Her brows furrowed and then they rose “Oh…it is.” She giggled to herself and continued to eat “You have any plans today?” he shook his head and she continued with the questions “Can I ask you something?”

He sighed roughly “No, I’ve never stayed with a boyfriend.”

Sammie shook her head with a laugh “No, not that. Have….uh…oh, nevermind.” She brushed it off lightly.

“Uh oh, do I feel girl talk coming?” he leaned over the table with interest “Go on, girl.” He urged.

She knew it was touchy subject not to mention, she’s never asked it before “Have you… ever been with a woman?” she flinched her body back preparing for his reaction.

Instead he looked away, his eyes distant and he sat back in the chair “Yes, but that was ages ago…she hurt me pretty bad. Why do you think I became the way I did?” his voice was barely audible “I can’t turn back.” His hair jumping back and forth when his head shook.

Sammie didn’t expect the answer as she raised her brows in shock “Wow…” she breathed but the minute she did Matty bursted into giggles. Her brows knit together “That’s mean…”

He wiped his tears and looked at her sadly “Aww…I’m sorry…it was just too easy. I couldn’t give up that chance. But to answer your question so your curious little mind will stop picking on me…No, I have never been with a woman…ew…it’s even disturbing to say.”

She smiled weakly “I see.”

***************weeks later***********

The Christmas party was the big talk at the lounge for all the employees. This year Ethan had announced that everyone could bring their family or friends up to 6 guest per person. The minute he did, there were whoops and cries of happiness ringing through the tiny family knit business.

Lauren saw Matty grinning like crazy and she couldn’t help but say “Do you even HAVE that many friends?”

“Better to have friends than enemies.” He snapped back just as quickly.

Sammie crossed her arms, she was beginning to get use to their arguments. Lauren raised her left brow “With friends like you, who needs enemies?” Lauren replied.

Matty snickered loudly “Rumor says we’re NOT friends.”

“Like I would want you as a friend!” Lauren snapped.

“Come on guys…it’s almost Christmas. Where is that giving and peaceful spirit?” Sammie gushed.

Lauren and Matty turned a finger to each other and pointed “He/She started it!” Sammie stifled a giggle when they said it simultaneously. They then turned and faced each other “Stop it!” they said again in unison causing Sammie to let out her laughter. “Psycho…” they both muttered, by now Sammie was practically rolling on the floor. The two of them turned to her and crossed their arms.

When Sammie finally noticed the two towering over her, she controlled her laughter “It is funny!” she said in her own defense. But the two didn’t take it too well and she knew if she didn’t escape, there would be no getting out “Ethan!!” she called for him over.

He nodded to the customer he was talking to and walked over to them “What’s up Moe?”

She gave him a funny look “Moe? When did I get a nickname?”

Ethan laughed “Just now. Sammie’s Moe, Lauren’s Curly and Matty is Larry. Three stooges.” He brought out his hands as if it made complete sense.

Matty dropped his jaw in shock “I resent that! Larry is the ugliest and I’m obviously way better looking than ‘this’.” He pointed his thumb to Lauren.

Ethan nodded to Sammie “Did you need me?”

“Where will the party be held? The flyers didn’t say…” she recalled.

“We’re having it at my dad’s mansion. I didn’t want to put it on the flyer just in case it slipped out and strange people would show up on our doorsteps. I’ll give you guys directions the day before the party. And it’s going to be a formal one, so dress nice.”

Sammie ruffled her brows “Will slacks be considered formal?”

Lauren and Matty began laughing at the same time but the minute they noticed that they were again, in tune, they stopped and Lauren cleared her throat “Formal, normally means something you wear to prom.”

“I’m 27, my Prom has long passed…anyways, I didn’t go.” Sammie was not agreeing to the dress code.

Matty waved his hand in the air “Don’t worry Ethan, I’ll help her find a dress.” He pulled his hand back to check out his nails “When I’m done with Sammie, you’d wish you chose her instead of the bean pole here.”

“At least my pole works!” Lauren snapped.

Sammie and Ethan winced at the response “Oh…come on!! Mental image….” Ethan pointed to his head while Sammie laughed.

“If I were you, Ethan, I’d dump her this second before she pulls you to hell with her. Or worse, get burned on the stake.” Matty widened his eyes and made an ‘oooh’ shaped lips.

But it seemed Lauren was not bothered by his accusations and curses. Instead she smiled wickedly “My spell is working…” she pointed to his face.

He was taken aback but didn’t want to appear worried as he fought the urge to touch his face “Whatever.” He turned swiftly on his foot and slowly walked towards the bathroom. But after two steps he made a mad dash for the rest room to check his face.
