Sammie didn’t expect Matty to come with her, but she figured he would. When she noticed he wasn’t talking, she turned and found him talking to a few handsome men a few feet away. She smiled to herself and turned around; she bumped right into Sean, he spilt a few drops of champagne over his expensive suit “Oh crap!! I’m so sorry Sean!” she wiped his vest with her hands.
Sean laughed as he took her hands and pulled them away “Don’t…you’re hands will get dirty.” He found a waiter walking around with a plate of drinks as he placed his glass on there “Come on, let’s get you cleaned up.” He was still holding onto her hand as he led her into the kitchen. He turned on the faucet and brought her hands under the water to clean them.
She felt a little awkward when people were staring at her “Uh…it’s okay Sean, I’ll do it myself.” She cleaned it and took a napkin to dry her hands.
“You know me?” he said it more with interest.
Sammie furrowed her brows, how could he not recognize her. Surely, she didn’t look that different? “Its me… Sammie.” She nodded.
“Sammie?” He widened his eyes and then looked her up and down and she gave a little curtsy “My, my…the swan has finally emerged. I was wondering how you knew my name.”
She laughed “Wow…do most girls spill drinks on you? That’s a bit forward for you to do for someone you didn’t know.”
Sean smiled crookedly “Well, a beautiful looking girl that knows me and she was touching me…what man could resist.”
“A gay man.” Sammie laughed when he looked surprise and eventually nodded in agreement “So are you here alone? Where’s the lady with you that first time we met?”
“Oh...I don’t know, she’s somewhere around here.” He said carelessly. Sean was obviously more interested in her. “You here alone?”
She nodded “Obvious isn’t it?”
“No. Surprised. That’s good news though.” He put out an arm as she linked through it with hers “Come on, I’ll introduce you to a few of my friends.” He walked her around like she was his trophy and every time she tried to leave, she found him pulling her back and introducing her to other people.
When they were left alone, she turned to him with a smile “Look, I’m not a statuette, so don’t parade me around.” She liked the guy and he was polite to a certain extent.
“Wow, you sure know how to kick a guy when he’s down.” Sean sighed.
Sammie laughed “Sorry, sometimes I don’t know when to stop. I just say it like it is.” She furrowed her brows when he looked down “What’s wrong?”
Sean looked up with a small smile “Nothing. My friend just told me that my girlfriend was making out with another guy in one of the bedrooms upstairs.”
“So she is your girlfriend?” her brows rose.
He nodded “Unfortunately…it’s a one sided arrow. She’s so caught up in her ex boyfriend.”
“So he’s here?” she was surprised.
Sean shrugged his broad shoulders “I don’t know. But she’s always talking about him. Gosh, it was back in high school…it’s infatuation, why can’t she just let it go?”
“I’m sorry to hear that.” Sammie said sympathetically.
Their conversation was interrupted by Matty’s sweet voice “Seeeannn!!” he rushed over to them and Sammie could smell the alcohol on his breath “You look wonderful today.” he placed his hand on his chest “How about me?” he spun around and went a little tipsy as he leaned onto Sammie for support.
“Matty, how many drinks did you have?” Sammie asked worriedly.
“Two…five…ten…I lost count.” He looked around and then leaned over to her ear to whisper “Those guys got me drinks.” He pointed to a group of guys that he was standing with.
Sean looked at Matty sadly “They’re straight.” He saw Matty’s expression change “I can guarantee it. They’re just messing with you.”
Matty instantly tried to play it off as he smiled and diverged his attention to Sean “So… do you want to swing over on this side? Take a walk on the wild side?…the grass is greener on this meadow…” He didn’t know when to stop.
Sean chuckled nervously “Actually, I like this side.” He turned to Sammie “Excuse me.” He pretended to got and greet other people.
The minute he was gone, Matty stood up straight and rolled his eyes “Sheesh, I hate guys that are not loyal.” He flipped his hair to the side.
Sammie leered her eyes dangerously at him “You little faker!” she pointed at him.
He laughed and shushed her “Shhh! Quiet down. Please…moi? Drunk?” he laughed haughtily “Matty Fong can never be drunk.” He retorted.
Rolling her eyes upwards, she caught a glance of a girl at the stairwell. She saw her fixing her black and red dress while another guy emerged behind her and she quickly whispered something to him and he trailed a few steps behind. Matty followed her gaze but the minute his eyes landed on the girl’s he turned away. Sammie looked at him strangely “You know her?”
Matty shook his head but covered his face with his hands “Of course not!” he denied openly “I’m gonna go get a drink.” He said hastily and rushed away.
Sammie turned back to the girl and saw her arching her neck while looking at Matty’s back. Her instincts told her that Matty did know the girl. She remembered her name as the girl looked ready to go after Matty “Julia.” Sammie called her.
The girl stopped and turned to her “Do I know you?” she asked rudely.
“We met at that lunch over a month ago. Sean invited Ethan and he took me along.” Sammie explained.
The girl was still not friendly with the exaggerated roll of the eyes “Over a month? Look, I don’t even remember what I had for dinner last night, what makes you think I’ll remember you.” She snapped harshly.
Sammie raised her brows and crossed her arms “You know Matty?”
That caught her attention “Matty?” she suddenly nodded with a grin “Oh…you mean Matthew. The people that knew him longer called him Matthew.” She pointed out, trying to slap it back in Sammie’s face.
“I guess you don’t know him TOO well if you don’t even know he goes by Matty.” Sammie pointed out. She hated women that played games and she has never lost a battle.
Julia seemed flustered as she leaned her weight on one leg “So what if I know him? It’s none of your business.”
Sammie only had a hunch but she blurted out “He’s the ex boyfriend you can’t get over?”
*********
In the kitchen Matty was hiding behind a cloth as he stole glances into the living room where Sammie and Julia were talking. Lauren was out at the pool when she came back through the kitchen to get her jacket. She saw Matty being sneaky as she tiptoed her way over to him and took her fingers to poke him in the ribs when Matty spun around “I see you!!”
Lauren looked disappointed “How did you know?”
“I could smell that cheap perfume from a mile away. What did you do? Drink it?” he said with sarcasm.
The daggers were flying now, Lauren prepared to take off her earrings and bracelet “Okay, she-man…no one’s here. We’ll settle it once and forever. You’re all mine.. bi-atch!!”
Matty crossed his arms and a smile appeared on his face “Sorry, this suit is new. I don’t want your cheap blood ruining it.”
“Who says I’m gonna lose?” she brought up her hands in a fist position “Come on, I’m not afraid of you.”
He rolled his eyes “Look Missy…I’m not going to fight no girl. It’s not fair if I win and if I lose, I’ll never hear the end of it. I aint falling for your trick.”
Lauren nodded eventually and placed her jewelry back “Fine. I want an apology then.” She crossed her arms.
“For what?!” he asked incredulously.
“You are disrespectful to me since the first day I walked into the lounge. Isn’t that enough to apologize?” Lauren pointed out.
Matty laughed “Fine. I’ll apologize.” She nodded smugly “I’m sorry … that you’re skinny and flat and ugly and can’t grow your hair long enough to look like a woman!”
“Okay, that’s it…I’m taking you out right here right now!!” she reached up and yanked on his hair as he let out a shriek. She pulled another handful and tripped him onto the floor as she crawled over him while pulling on his hair.
“Get off me, WITCH!!!” his cries were heard everywhere as a few people came running in and started chanting ‘Fight’. Only Sammie and Ethan were capable of stopping the fight as they pulled the two away from each other. Matty was more concerned with his appearance as he turned to Sammie “Is my hair okay?” he asked. But the minute his eyes landed on the girl standing behind her, he quickly turned away making Sammie more suspicious.
Ethan shook his head at the two “I’m so disappointed in you two. This is the time to get together and be grateful for what we have, not rip each other’s clothes off.”
Matty raised his hands timidly “We didn’t rip each other’s clothes…” Ethan threw him a glare and he quickly cowered down.
“No more fighting or this is the last year we’ll do this party!” Ethan cried as he turned to Lauren and then Matty “Now if no one has fun, I’ll kick everyone out of the house!!” within seconds people were mingling and laughing again as they scurried out of the kitchen.
Matty wrinkled his nose and turned to Sammie “She started it.”
“What?!” Lauren pulled her chin up at him threateningly.
Sammie crossed her arms and nodded her head to Lauren “You, go act like you’re having a good time.” She turned up to Matty “You, follow me outside, now.” She began walking and he too followed.
He passed by Lauren and gave her one last glare before entering the backyard “Why can’t we talk inside. It’s cold out here.” He complained as he began to hug himself.
The two settled in the corner part of the backyard where no one else was. Sammie turned to him with a cold look “I can’t believe you…Matthew.”
“Woooh, first name…” he put up his hands in defense “What did I do?”
“You lied to me.” Sammie shook her head in dismay “The friend that I trusted my every dark secret with lied to me without a blink of an eye.”
Matty laughed “Honey, you’ve got no dark secret…your worse was probably crushing over Ethan but too scared to tell him.”
Sammie let out a sigh “You think this is funny…” she nodded “Why don’t you sit here and think about what you did wrong.” She walked away “Friends!” she muttered under her breath.
