When she returned to the party, she noticed Sean sitting on the couch looking completely out of it. She walked over and sat down next to him “You okay?”
Sean rubbed his forehead “I can’t believe…all this time I was going against a gay guy.”
Sammie smiled softly “Not really. He was never gay to begin with.”
He snickered at the comment “I don’t know if I’m stupid or if he’s stupid for turning gay over Julia.”
“What is it about her that you guys can’t resist?” Sammie asked “Personally, I find her very unattractive…sure she’s gorgeous but aside from that, I think she’s got a cold heart.”
“You’re very right.” Sean agreed “But it’s strange…she’s got this power…the way she talks and the way she acts. Guys like challenge you know? And she’s like a princess that can never be tamed.”
Sammie snickered with her head shaking “I don’t understand you guys…why can’t you just settle for a simple, nice girl…but you have to go after the ones that play games and goes in circles…not to mention cheat on you from right over your head.”
“Guys are dumb…” he snorted “What can I tell you?” he shook his head and gulped down the glass of red wine near his seat.
“Is that yours?” she asked when she noticed a lipstick mark on it.
Sean shook his head blankly “No.”
“I’ll let you sit here and mope okay?” Sammie smiled when he nodded slowly. She got up and felt his hand cover her palm as he pulled her back down.
“I like you Sammie!” Sean blurted out.
She couldn’t believe her ears, one minute he was dying over this girlfriend and then the next he confessed his love for her “What?!” her head shaking in disbelief.
“I know it’s absurd…but I do. The first day I met you, I was upset to know you were Ethan’s girlfriend…then I learned the truth. I thought you were this sweet…funny…. and caring girl that could easily make me happy.” He reached out and took both of her hands “What do you say? Give us a chance?”
Sammie looked down at their clasped hands and pulled her hands slowly away “I’m sorry, Sean…I…” she began and he only nodded understandingly. She had the sudden urge to go and tell Matty the truth. The secret would only eat her alive.
She figured he wouldn’t come back inside yet as she raced outside the pool. She looked around and only a few couples were outside mingling. Sammie heard some noise to her left as she walked around the darkened area. It was the only place in the backyard that had no light. She could not see who it was, but she could only guess.
Shocked that her eyes were not deceiving her, she only saw his eyes when he looked up at her. There was Matty and Julia in the tightest lip lock she has ever seen, she felt tears stinging her eyes and her breathing quickened. She didn’t see that he was trying to push the girl off of himself because of the darkened area. But she only believed what she saw. The two broke apart when Matty pulled the girl away at arms length.
Sammie didn’t want to look as she turned away and tears dripped to the ground. He came rushing over to her “Sammie…I…”
She didn’t wait for him to explain as she looked up and slapped him square across the face “Jerk…” she managed to spit out. She turned on her foot and quickened her steps until she was running towards the side of the house that led to the front of the house. She heard steps following her but she would not turn until Matty reached out and grabbed her arm to spin her around.
“Sammie, you’re acting like a jealous girlfriend!” he cried.
She shook her head in disbelief “You have no idea what this is about don’t you?” he looked at her blankly “God…how in the world did I believe you were ever gay?” she shook her arm from his grasp and continued on.
“Sammie…wait.” Matty chased her until they were in the front yard, where Ethan and Lauren were. He was kneeling in front of Lauren with a ring in his hand and Lauren was grinning from ear to ear. The two turned to Sammie and Matty who were oblivious to Ethan’s proposal moment “What is with you?” Matty tried again.
She turned to him “Are you so dense that you can’t see that I like you?” she looked at him in the eye with a hurtful expression when he turned away, not knowing what to say “Do you know how much it hurts to see the guy I’ve liked for months be gay and I know he can never turn the other way…so I let the secret eat me alive. But then I see you… and HER!” she cried “It’s the most disturbing picture ever.”
He felt his blood rise to his face “It’s not enough for you to slap me.” He said through clenched teeth.
Lauren and Ethan rushed over to the two “I missed a slap?!” she cried in dismay.
Sammie ignored the two “I slapped you because you straight out lied to my face. If you didn’t like me…all you had to do was say it. Why did you lie about your sexuality?”
“You’re not gay?” Lauren pointed to Matty.
“Thank God!” Ethan sighed and the three turned to him strangely. He only smiled weekly.
Sammie was back on track again as she put him on the spot “Go ahead…explain. Tell me everything.” She nodded while crossing her arms “I’m listening.”
Matty turned his head to the ground and sighed “Fine. Once upon a time, I was straight. I dated a girl named Julia.” At the sound of her name Lauren let out a gasp as she pointed into the mansion and Sammie nodded “Anyways…” Matty threw Lauren a dirty look “she broke up with me saying I was too much of a man for her. What the hell does that mean?” he asked more to himself “I don’t care right now…but at that time, I was crushed. She hurt me…she hurt my masculinity. How would you feel if the girl you loved more than anything in the world tell you that you were not man enough?”
“So you turned gay because of that?” Lauren asked with surprised.
“She thought I wasn’t good enough…because I was too much of a man…fine, then I might as well turn to the other side. The more gay I became, the more I felt that was where I belonged. I was able to do anything and it was forgiven because I was not the typical man.” He explained coldly.
Sammie wiped the tears that were still coming out of her eyes “If she hurt you that bad, why are you going back to her? God, I can’t get that image of you kissing her earlier out of my head!” she rubbed her forehead while Lauren and Ethan dropped their jaws in shock. He didn’t want to explain the fact that Julia was the one coming on to him.
“I don’t know what else to tell you.” He let out a sigh.
“Don’t…you don’t have to. You’ve said enough…you’d rather be hurt again than to pick a perfectly normal girl that likes you for who you are and would never ask you to be someone you’re not. I… totally… understand.” Sammie was more than hurt, she was scarred. Never would she let herself fall for another guy. She turned to the guys and pushed them out of the way “Stupid men…” she muttered.
“Sammie!!” Lauren called after her but Matty pulled her back and she whipped her hand away “Don’t touch me…who knows what disease you have. Finished with women and then move on to men… and now back to women. I don’t know what Sammie saw in you.” She spat harshly.
“I don’t know either.” Matty said sadly “She’s such a great girl…”
“But you don’t like her.” Ethan finished for him.
Matty shook his head “Are you kidding me? I’m crazy about her…”
The two looked at him strangely “Then why did you make out with she-devil?” Lauren was quick to give Julia a nickname.
“I wasn’t, Julia pushed herself on me. She’s very strong for a girl.” Matty said convincingly “I was trying to push her away when Sammie saw the whole thing.”
Ethan shook his head “I don’t get it…if you like her, then why don’t you tell her.”
Matty snickered sarcastically “Do you know that Sean has a huge crush on Sammie?”
He nodded with a smile “It’s obvious.”
“Wait…how come you two know and I don’t?” Lauren asked in shock.
“Because girls don’t notice guys other than their boyfriends.” Matty pointed out “But I didn’t want to tell Sammie because I figured she deserve someone better than me. I couldn’t bring her happiness. I’m just a lounge singer…compared to a rich man who can give her everything she ever wanted. She deserves to have a guy that can take care of her for the rest of her life.”
“What are we? In the 1900’s??” Lauren asked “Who thinks of that stuff anymore? You think you’re being generous and understanding by handing her over to a guy that she can never like?”
“She will…as long as they stick around more often. She’ll like him.” Matty said more convincingly.
Ethan crossed his arm “You know what I think…” he said to Matty “I think you’re scared. You’re scared to let your heart free again. Scared that if you give love a chance, it would only end in heartache. So you’re willing to give up a chance than to actually take one. That way, you’ll save yourself from a ‘chance’ at getting hurt again.”
Lauren smiled at her now fiancé with a smile “Damn, your so sexy!!” she reached out and kissed him passionately on the lips.
Matty on the other hand gave them a strange look and turned away “I’m still here, people!” he covered his eyes after a moment.
Ethan managed to breath when Lauren finally let go of him “Whew…It’s a little hot out here isn’t it?”
Matty rolled his eyes “It’s 40 degrees out here.”
“Let me give you a final piece of advice.” Ethan began “Love rarely comes to a person the second time around. If you are going to let that chance slip, it will take years to find another. Even if you do, your mind will always linger back to the love that you let slip away. Don’t do it to yourself. Don’t do it to Sammie…she deserves a guy that will love her wholeheartedly. Not a guy that can buy her a car or a house-” Ethan didn’t finish as Lauren again bounced on him with another lip lock.
Matty gave them a disgusted face “Get a room.” With that he walked away. But he couldn’t deny that Ethan’s words were wise. He walked around the night thinking hard what he wanted to do. But he couldn’t come up with an answer. He was afraid of taking another chance on another girl. Yet knowing that Sammie was a completely different world compared to Julia wasn’t enough. Women were women after all, how different could they be from one another? They were conniving, heart breakers.
