The following day at work, Sammie was busy thinking of ways to break the news to Matty about his new ‘identity’ project. She debated in her mind if it would be easier to tell him slowly or just give him the news straight out. She leaned her elbow on the counter while mumbling to herself. Her attention eventually turned to the figure standing at the door. He was wearing large sunglasses and a straw hat that dangled over his face yet she was still able to recognize him.

Matty wore a dark trench coat as he snuck up to the bar “Can I get a drink?” he asked in a low voice.

Sammie gave him a strange look “What the hell are you wearing?!”

“SHHH!!!” he hushed while darting his head back and forth “She around?”

“If you’re talking about Lauren, she went out earlier to pick up more cases of vodkha.” She explained while pointing to his getup “You think by looking like that you would not stand out?”

Matty rolled his eyes after taking off his sunglasses and hat “No, I was trying to blend in.”

Sammie wrinkled her brows “Blend in? With what? The beach and streaker crowd?”

“Ha ha…you’re so funny, I forgot to laugh.” He suddenly caught his reflection in one of the bottles “Oh my God!!!” he cried in dismay startling Sammie.

“What’s wrong?” she asked with genuine concern.

He was flustered trying to think of the words as they sputtered out “Mm…my….my …hair…I look awful!!” he groaned. Matty tried unsuccessfully to comb down the cowlick that was at the center of his head due to the hat he was wearing. Sammie covered her mouth while she laughed humorously. He let out a sigh and gave her an exasperated look “Well, I’m glad this amuses you. I go on in 10 minutes! I can’t look like this!”

Sammie wiped the tears that were stinging her eyes while she pushed her cheeks together with her hands “Stop…it hurts. Don’t make me laugh.” He snickered at her making her smile “Its okay, nothing that a little water can’t fix.” She shook her head at him while he looked like a lost soul.

She reached under a drawer where she left her purse and pulled out a comb that she normally carried in case of an emergency. She washed it with water and began combing the uncooperative hair down for Matty. His eyes wandered upwards at her hands wondering if she even know how to comb a guy’s hair “Are you sure it’s okay?” he asked worriedly.

Sammie tilted her head “Of course, I use to comb my neighbor’s poodle everyday. She always looked refined.” She nodded firmly.

Matty looked at her strangely “You calling me a poodle?”

“Does it matter?” she shrugged her shoulders.

“I guess not.” He said after a moment. Matty glanced at his watch which caused him to widened his eyes “I’m on!” he rushed to the stage and grabbed the microphone easily. He turned to the crowd with a smile “Now….” But he only went as far as the first word with his face began to pale over and his smile faded ever so slowly only to be replaced by a look of fear.

The crowd that sat before him were females only. He didn’t realize until he was on stage, he looked at Sammie for help but she only gave him a strange look as to why he didn’t continue talking. Suddenly the lounge door open and Lauren rushed inside. Her smile faded as she punched her fist into the other hand “Gosh darnit! I missed the intro…she turned to Sammie “That’s the best part.” She crossed her arms and walked closer to the stage as she indulged in Matty’s embarrassment “What’s wrong? Cat’s got your tongue?”

“I…I…” Matty shook his head “I can’t sing in front of girls…” he let out a sigh and then a shiver.

Lauren burst into giggles while Sammie shook her head at the two. She rushed out of the bar and over to Lauren “Hey, that’s not necessary.” She said calmly.

“What? And locking me in the girl’s bathroom is okay?” she asked incredulously.

Sammie let out a sigh “Don’t you think this is bad enough? I mean…look at him.” She pointed to Matty who stood petrified for the first time on stage. His eyes darted from one girl to another as if he was trying to find a male figure in the audience “He’s a scared rabbit. Come on, just let it go. He’s gonna have it coming…” she let her words fade away.

Lauren wrinkled her brows “What do you mean by that?”

Before Sammie could continue, the audience began to groan and boo Matty “Sit down if you’re not going to sing….Boo!!! Get off the stage!”

Sammie’s heart came out to her friend as she rushed on stage to calm down the crowd “Sorry Ladies, Matty is not feeling too good. How about we have someone else entertain you?” she waved for Lauren to come up. Her friend only rolled her eyes and began walking up to them.

She took the microphone from Sammie reluctantly “Girls, the games over. Thanks for coming…for those of you that I still owe $100. bucks, meet me at the door.” Slowly the girls began to get up and walk out mumbling things to themselves.

“You paid them to come and embarrass me??” Matty asked in complete shock.

Lauren turned to him with a sly smile “You sound almost surprised.” She shrugged her shoulders while he was fuming “Anything’s worth it after seeing your face. You could pass for a ghost from how pale your face got.” Thinking about it only made her laugh more.

“I hate you!!” he cried while pushing her aside and running to the bathroom with his arms flaring side to side.

Lauren only laughed as she mimicked his running “Boo hoo, I’m going to go cry in the boys bathroom…eventhough I really want to be in the girls’.” She began cackling like a chicken while wiping her tears. Sammie crossed her arms and tilted her head to one side while waiting for Lauren to finish. She was still laughing and eventually had to hold her stomach in pain. When she noticed Sammie raising a brow at her, she controlled her laughter and stood up straight “Okay…I’m done.”

Sammie shook her head at her friend “Why don’t you be the bigger man about this?”

“Why should I? He’s the man…oh wait…I take that back.” Laurie tapped her chin thoughtfully “Hmm…what should I do next? Hey, do you know if he’s afraid of snakes?”

“Lauren…” Sammie began sternly “You got him back. You two are tied…just let bygones be bygones.”

Lauren laughed “Since when did you turn into a preacher. Anyways, you didn’t answer me earlier…what did you mean by he’s got it coming to him?”

She was hesitant to tell her friend, afraid that Lauren would be so excited that she would slap it in Matty’s face. It would have to be done slowly and cautiously with Matty “Uh… oh nothing. I just have to talk to him that’s all. Anyways, I’m gonna go and see how he’s doing.” Sammie approached the guy’s bathroom as she knocked on it “Matty…” she waited for him to answer.

“Go away.” He groaned while sobbing uncontrollably.

Sammie took her chances as she opened the door, hoping no other guy was in there. She saw Matty sitting on the ground with his head to his knees and his arms wrapped around his legs “Matty…are you okay?” she leaned down on her knees to take a better look at him.

He looked up with his tear stained face and his hand holding a napkin as he wiped his tears delicately “I have never been so embarrassed in my life.” He said dramatically.

She smiled at his exaggeration “Oh come now, how about that one time when the kids teased you? You said that was the reason why you stepped to the other side of the bridge.”

Matty pouted his lips “I guess…but still that was embarrassing. I NEVER get tongue tied and that…she-devil…oh…I could kill her.” He grumbled.

“You two need to stop this war.” Sammie advised wisely.

“Thank you, Miss America…” he said sarcastically “But this is not something that will end nicely. Either I take her out or she takes me out. So, what team will you be on?”

Sammie shook her head “Uh uh…no way are you two dragging me into this.”

He shrugged his shoulders “Suit yourself, but if I win, you would have missed the chance to be on the winning side.” Matty was in a better mood, she could tell since he got up and began fixing his hair and face “Hey, you did a good job, my hair does look good.” He smiled with approval.

“Glad you liked it.” She smiled sheepishly. It was the perfect moment to tell Matty about their show in two weeks. “Uh…Matty?” she began slowly. He turned to her for a second with raised brows as he let out a humming sound “There’s something I have to tell you.”

Matty’s face brightened as he turned to Sammie and reached out to touch her arm “Oh..my..God…are you and Ethan…like…dating?”

Sammie furrowed her brows as she closed her eyes and shook her head vehemently “No…no…not that.”

“Oh…then what is it?” he sounded disappointed and a bit curious.

“Maybe you better sit down for this.” She pointed to the ground and he quickly bounced to the ground with his legs crossed Indian style.

“So, what is it?” he asked with a perky voice and even wider grin.

Sammie began pacing the floor “Well…that meeting that Ethan took me to yesterday… uh…Sean is coming-”

She was cut off when Matty interrupted her “Who’s Sean? Is he cute? Does he have a girlfriend? If so, how do I get him alone so I can de-straightened him?”

Sammie was at disbelief with her friend, he was so full of it “First of all, he does have a girlfriend, second of all he is straight and I doubt he’s willing to sway the other side, if you know what I mean.”

Matty was more confident though “Yeah, well I have never ceased to fail to change a straight man into a better woman. One night with Matty and he’ll wish he met me sooner.”

She kneeled down in front of him and placed her small hands on his shoulder “Matty, my dear, dear friend…when are you going to wake up and accept that not all men can be changed to a homosexual? And stop disrupting me!” she pushed at him while he dropped his jaw with a look of shock “Oh save it!” she blurted out “Matty, I’m gonna make this short and painful. Ethan has requested that you guys, the performers act straight for one night. Sean is not into that gay lounge thing, he is the best chance for Ethan to expand his business but he wants to take a look at the bar. With one look at you, he would run faster than Forest Gump being chase by bullies.”

From outside, Lauren stood at the bar wondering what was so secretive that Sammie couldn’t tell her. Suddenly, she heard a shriek so loud coming from the bathroom that she had to turn to the door. She saw Sammie walking out calmly while the screams continued to escape through the gaps of the door “What happened?” she asked with curiosity.

Sammie walked over to Lauren with a brisk smile “He didn’t take it too well.” She said while wrinkling her nose. The screaming abruptly stopped but only to be replaced by an even higher pitched screech. Sammie winced painfully as she returned to the bar. Leaving Lauren with complete curiosity.

She wondered what it could be and why Sammie would not tell her. She promised herself that she would find out from Ethan or Sammie.
