Steven Ma – Eric To
One night while Sammie was working at the bar, she saw a handsome stranger coming through the door of the lounge. He walked straight over to her with a smile “Hi, I’m Eric, you must be Sammie.”
She smiled shortly “I’m sorry…do I know you?” she wondered if he would be the same as that crazy woman that came into the bar the other night.
He shook his head with a laugh “Matty said you had a sense of humor. No, actually I’m his friend.”
Sammie relaxed herself with a sigh “Oh…I see.” She looked around and found Matty still performing “He’ll be back in a minute.”
Eric smiled “Actually, I was here to see you.”
Her eyes moved from Matty to Eric as she slowly got out of the bar “Excuse me for a minute.” She marched up to the stage and interrupted his song “Sorry, Matty is going to take a short break.” when she announced it into the microphon, she heard a few boos and hisses but they quieted down. Matty was a little startled by her rude manner as he let her pull him to the side “What are you doing?” she asked while pointing at Eric.
Matty smiled as he patted her on the arm “You don’t have to thank me.” He said sweetly.
“You’re lucky I’m not going to kill you this second!” she snapped harshly “What did I tell you about setting me up?”
He rolled his eyes away as he searched his mind “Uh…I don’t remember. I didn’t know we had this conversation.”
“Well, let me remind you.” She began “I hate it and it should never happen and if it did, I would never forgive you.” She concluded.
Matty laughed “Oh that…right. I thought you were kidding.” She let out a sigh and he continued, oblivious to her angering face “He’s straight, don’t worry. He’s cute, rich and I’ve told him everything about you. He’s really interested.”
Sammie shook her head in disbelief “Are you even listening to what I’m saying?”
“Oh come now sweetheart. You have to get over Ethan one day…if you are too naïve to see it…then I’ll tell you. Ethan and Lauren are dating. It’s all over the lounge, we all know except for you.” He pointed out.
She felt her face getting more hot as she shook her head “I can’t believe you.” She mumbled and walked back to the bar.
Eric saw the whole argument but he was curious to know what they were talking about. Yet he wasn’t about to give up “So, are you free tonight?”
Sammie raised a brow “I’m wearing an apron and I’m standing behind the bar, does it look like I’ll be free” she snapped sarcastically.
“I…I just thought…” he began to feel flustered.
She looked at Eric and realized he was embarrassed by her outburst “I’m sorry Eric…I didn’t mean to be rude.”
Eric smiled “It’s okay…so you are free?” he was persistent.
Sammie gave him a short sympathetic smile “I guess I should be more clear. I’m not interested in you…sorry.”
He nodded slowly “I see…it’s just that Matty had built you up into this incredible girl. I just thought…Well, this is a little awkward.” He sighed “Anyways, it’s nice meeting you. Can you tell Matty that I’ll talk to him some other time?”
“Of course.” She smiled gently and watched him disappear out of the lounge. After Matty was done with his fifth number, he strolled his way over to Sammie with a goofy smile on his face “I scared him off.” She said without looking up.
“You what?!” Matty’s voice screeched.
Sammie winced from the sharp sound “You heard me. And don’t be trying to set me up again.”
Matty rolled his eyes “Well, someone’s on their period.”
Suddenly their conversation was disrupted by three guys. One guy had an obvious interest in Sammie as he leaned over the counter and deliberately pushed Matty off his stool “Hi cutie…can I buy you a drink?”
Sammie was about to respond when Matty laughed loudly “Hello!! She’s working. No drinking on the job.” He said smartly.
The guy turned to Matty slowly with a threatening nature “Look queer boy! Get the hell out of my face before I punch your face deeper than your dimple.”
Matty dropped his jaw in shock, never had he heard of such rude threats in the lounge before. Lauren wasn’t there to shoo them out. There was only Sammie and Matty to fight their own battles “Look guys, don’t give us trouble. You just want to buy me a drink right? Fine. I’ll drink.” She poured herself a shot of vodka and drank it. She felt the burning sensation traveling up from her stomach after she swallowed the bitter drink. Her face flinched in pain while the three guys clapped their hands.
“Sammie!” Matty cried “You don’t drink.”
“She does now.” The guy turned his attention to Sammie again “How about another round?”
“No!” Matty barked at the guy’s face.
The other two guys pushed him harshly away “It’s none of your business!!” the guy pointed at Matty harshly but the minute he turned to Sammie, a perverted smile was put on “Now, where were we? I feel like Tequila.” He nodded to her.
She poured it for him in a shot but he raised a brow at her, expecting her to drink it “It hardly seems fair…” Sammie began.
The guy laughed “My dear, you drank that first shot too fast. I didn’t even request what kind of alcohol yet. This one, I’ll pay for.”
“You jerks!!” Matty took a step towards them only to be pushed back again by the other guys.
Sammie put her hand up “Hey, leave him alone.” She turned to the guy “Just one more drink?” he nodded and she took the shot. This time almost choking on it as it was even stronger than the vodka. For a person that’s never drank it before, it was traveling through her system too fast. She felt a little queasy in the stomach not to mention she didn’t eat anything for dinner yet.
The guys left it at that and laughed their way out of the lounge. Matty instantly leaned over and took her hand “Are you okay, Sammie?” he asked with concern.
Sammie whipped her hand away “I’m fine. Thanks for everything.” She touched her head when it began to slowly throb.
“You haven’t eaten anything yet, you can get drunk easily like that. Plus you’ve never drank before, it’s going to hit you hard.” Matty said with experience.
“Thanks doctor, I’ll be fine.” But she was fooling herself. Her head was pounding now. After about fifteen minutes, she knew it was time to go home. She waved to one of the waiters, who was a backup bartender “Jodie, I have to go home. I’m not feeling good. Just tell Matty that I left early.” The girl nodded and took over her apron.
Sammie walked out of the lounge and suddenly felt the world spinning around her. She leaned on the side walls of the buildings to hold herself up. When she felt her legs quiver, a pair of hands held her up. She looked up with a confused expression “Who are you?”
“A friend.” The man said.
Suddenly she recognized him “Your that man earlier….” She then noticed the two guys walking up behind him. She was about to scream when the man covered her mouth.
“Shut up, bitch or I’ll kill you!!” he whispered threateningly.
Sammie widened her eyes and nodded as they dragged her down a dark and stinky alley. They stepped along puddles but the men didn’t care if they got her dirty. She stumbled through and was quickly thrown to the corner on top of some cardboard boxes. She groaned in pain but was too weak and drunk to get up. Suddenly, she felt the man’s arm pushing her to lie down. Sammie let out screams but it only made the man slap her.
When she feared for the worse, she heard from behind the guys fighting with someone. Her vision blurred and she felt dizzy from the slap. She only caught a glimpse of the guy that was trying to help her. Sammie woke up abruptly, she gasped at the darkened room “Where am I?!” she exclaimed.
“Shhh…you’re fine now.” Matty hushed “This is my apartment, I didn’t want to turn on the light, it might hurt your eyes.” Even in the moonlit apartment, she could see his dimples.
Sammie sat back up as she touched her head “What happened to those men?” She looked up at him suddenly “You saved me?”
He smiled “Of course not! A cop walked by and he rushed in to help you. I saw him running and so I followed along to make sure it wasn’t you. Jodie told me you went home early and I was concerned so I ran after you to make sure you got home safely.”
Sammie instantly knew he was lying. There was only one person in the alley and she was positive it was him. Yet he still denied it, but at the same time she wondered if Matty had the courage to fight off three attackers? He was afraid of a barking dog let alone three full grown men that can beat him with a pinky. She eyed him carefully and he only smiled in return “I must thank the cop then.”
Matty waved his hand nonchalantly “No..he said it was his job and it’s not necessary.” He reached over the coffee table and picked up a tea cup “Here, drink this ginger tea, it’ll wake you up. After you’re done, I’ll take you home.” He crossed his legs while sitting on the table.
It only made Sammie grow more suspicious from his comment “Actually…I’m really tired. Could I stay here with you for the night?” she tested.
His reaction was surprise but eventually he nodded and rubbed her arm “Of course you can sweetheart…I’ll sleep on the couch.”
“Why?” You have a king size bed.” Sammie pressed “We can share the same bed, no use in you or myself sleeping on this lumpy couch.”
Matty laughed nervously for the first time, was he blushing? She couldn’t tell from the dimly lit room “Uh…well, it’s not good you know…a guy and girl.”
Sammie smiled “When did you consider yourself a guy? It’s not like we’re going to have sex…we’re just sleeping together…literally.” She pushed it further.
He eventually gave in “I guess you’re right….okay, but I’m taking the right side!” he claimed.
