That night while everyone was deep asleep, the window of the third floor opened silently. Addy was comfortable in the bed while Don slept on the floor next to her. The guy in the dark out fit and ski mask climbed in with ease. He closed the window behind him as he pulled out his gun, he poked at Addy. She twitched at the pointed object hitting her back “Stop it!” she groaned.
Don wrinkled his forehead but he didn’t open his eyes “I didn’t do anything.” He mumbled.
“Stop poking me!” Addy turned her body only to be staring down the gun barrel.
Don snapped his eyes open as he sat up, his heart raced at the scene before him “Don’t hurt her…” he coaxed “Just don’t hurt her.”
Her eyes widened with fear as the masked guy continued to point the gun in her face “What do you want?” her voice trembled.
“Get out.” The guy ordered.
Addy turned her eyes to Don who only nodded “Go where?” she asked as she got off of the bed. The gun still pointing at her head.
The guy pointed to Don “You get out too.” He pushed at them with the gun as they walked outside the living room.
Her two bodyguards instantly woke up as the head guy stared at the scene in horror “What do you want?”
“Get out.” The guy repeated. He pushed at Don and Addy until they were clearly out the door along with the other two guys. He held the gun close to them and made them go into the elevator. When they left the apartment building, the guy pointed to the cab that was called for them “Get in there.” He ordered.
Addy frowned at the peculiar act of kidnapping. Why didn’t he escort them himself? They entered the car and the cab quickly drove off. Don turned behind the window of the car to see the guy still standing there. When they were blocks away, he saw him sprint away into the night. “That was bizarre.” He mumbled.
She nodded in agreement “Tell me about it.” She leaned onto the front seat where the driver was “Where are you taking us?”
The guy shrugged “I’m not sure lady. That man gave me $500. bucks and told me to drive you down town. He said when the meter ran out, I can let you off.”
Suddenly they heard a huge explosion from behind. Don and the guys spun back “What the hell was that?” he asked.
“Do you think….” Addy began but she shook her head “That couldn’t be…”
Don turned to her “You think that guy was trying to save us? Could he be Mel?”
Addy nodded “I was thinking the same thing.” She had a small smile on her face.
***************
Kathy was kneeling in the same position she was when she ran out of the hospital. Her face was streaked with dried tears, her eyes were dazed and her mind was somewhere else. Her eyes concentrated on a pair of legs walking towards her. Janet shook her head as she let out a small sigh “I warned you.” She said shortly.
“I know.” Kathy nodded slowly without looking up “I imagined the worse, but I still couldn’t take it.”
Janet bent down as she sat on the ground next to Kathy, they didn’t care about the stares that they received just sitting there in the middle of the street “What are you going to do?”
Kathy looked up for the first time and instantly noticed her black eye. At that second she forgot about Mel “What happened to you?”
The girl touched her left eye casually “Oh this? Just a love punch from my honey.” Her tone of voice was pure sarcasm.
“Why don’t you call the police?” Kathy asked with concern. Her heart went out to the girl, no one deserved to be beaten that way.
“And what? Be ridiculed by the court? I wouldn’t dream of it.” Kathy shook her head sadly and Janet laughed despite the situation “He’s a very jealous man. Anytime I even talk to another man, I was ‘cheating’ on him.” She rolled her eyes “And to think, I thought he was better than Mel.”
Kathy turned to her with widened eyes “Mel…maybe that’s why he’s treating you that way. Luke knew about your past with Mel. If the two of them are enemies, of course he would despise anyone that Mel liked.”
Janet smiled crookedly “By the time I realized that, it was too late. But you’re right.” She let out a sigh as she pushed herself off the cement. She put out a hand to help Kathy up. “Come on.”
“Where are we going?” she asked while allowing Janet to help her up.
“To get your boyfriend back before that cute nurse takes over.” Janet gave her a wink as she nodded towards the hospital but she stopped when Kathy didn’t walk. “What’s wrong? The worse has happened, you can’t let him off that easily?”
Kathy frowned “Why are you helping me?”
Janet smiled “You won fair and square. Quite frankly, I miss the old Mel. I think you are the only one that could help him remember.”
She smiled knowing that Janet was right. The girls walked into the hospital late in the night. She went through the same procedure as before and this time Caitlyn greeted them at the door “Hi.” Kathy gave her a friendly smile.
Janet checked Caitlyn out from head to toe, she nudged Kathy “You’ve got competition.”
“Excuse me?” Caitlyn asked with a smile.
“Nothing.” Kathy shook her head “This is Janet, one of Mel’s old friends.”
The young nurse nodded “I see. Hi, I’m Caitlyn. I’m sure Kathy told you the little details?” Janet snapped her gum as she nodded with a tilted head. “Great.” Caitlyn smiled as she waved for the girls to follow her “He just had a little checkup, so he’s free to see visitors.”
The three girls entered his room with Mel looking extra tired “Hi!” he said brightly “Who’s this?” he raised his eyes at Janet.
“Oh fuck, he really can’t remember shit huh?” Janet exclaimed as she poked at Mel in the forehead where his bruise was.
Caitlyn gave the girl a strange look and Kathy quickly explained “She’s never been in a hospital before.” She laughed nervously before pulling Janet away.
Mel tilted his head thoughtfully at Kathy “You’re….my sister?” he asked, still unsure of why he had an odd feeling.
“Yes.” Kathy nodded with a big smile while Janet widened her eyes at them.
“Sister?! Damn…so you’re into incest?” Janet pointed to Mel and Kathy.
Kathy turned to her with a beet red face, she shook her eyes vehemently “She’s just joking.” She turned to Mel and Caitlyn.
Caitlyn wondered why the girls were acting so strange but she had more important news to tell Kathy “Can I speak to you for a minute?” she asked Kathy, who then nodded, glad to be out of the place. Caitlyn took her outside to speak “I have some good news and some bad news.”
“Okay…” Kathy frowned wondering what it was about.
“The good news is there is a new machine that might be able to jump start his memory. The bad news is, it has never been tested on a human being with amnesia. Just on regular people and it’s resulted in people remember stuff from their childhood.” Caitlyn smiled when Kathy nodded “I imagined you’d be happier.”
Kathy looked up “I am very happy!” her face fell suddenly “But the chances are slim aren’t they?”
Caitlyn nodded “There are always consequences. But if you don’t take the chance, how will you ever know?”
She knew the nurse was right “I guess…”
“Now come on, let’s go tell Mel the good news.” Caitlyn opened the door to let Kathy but when Kathy stopped, the petite nurse looked up and began laughing.
Janet was teaching Mel some of his favorite words “Fuck!” Mel spat out harshly.
Janet stood by him with her hand on her chin, she shook her head “No, that’s not rough enough. Say it with hatred.” She urged.
Mel nodded as if being in school “FUCK!” this time there was spit.
Caitlyn laughed amusingly while Kathy shook her head at Janet “See, almost back to normal.” Janet was proud of herself.
“Did I curse a lot?” Mel asked.
The girls turned to Kathy who shrugged “You’re his sister.” Caitlyn pointed out.
“Yeah!” Janet chimed in with a sly grin.
Kathy let out a long sigh as she walked over to Mel “Yes, you did. But it’s always been a bad habit I tried to change. But you always managed to use the words in the most…interesting way.” Her eyes dazed as she recalled the first time she met him how he scared her to death.
“Really? I want to hear.” Mel said with much interest.
Caitlyn noticed Kathy was in her own little world as she nudged her gently “Kathy? Why don’t you tell Mel about the good news?”
Janet glanced at her watch and then up at Kathy “I have to go.” She said solemnly.
Kathy looked at her sympathetically “Be careful.” She advised sincerely.
“I’ll try.” Janet smiled as she waved goodbye to everyone, she gave Mel a hug “Get well soon and take care of her.” She pointed to Kathy before leaving the room.
Caitlyn turned to Kathy and then Mel “I’ll leave you two alone so you can talk.” Kathy nodded.
There was instant silence in the room when Mel’s nurse left. The two stared at each other awkwardly “Uh…where should I start?” Kathy asked more to herself.
Mel smiled as he patted the side of his bed indicating for her to come over closer “Why do you act like we’re strangers? If we are family, you don’t need to be shy. Just treat me like you normally would.” He was coaxing her.
Kathy felt strange being alone with him and the fact that he thought she was his sister was almost unbearable. But she knew it was her fault for blurting it out. She slowly walked over and sat down on the bed next to him “It’s a little hard.”
He frowned gently “How so?”
“Because you don’t remember me.” She said it sadly and it almost made him feel bad, but yet he didn’t know why. There was something emotional about the girl that he couldn’t quite get. She gave him a different feeling.
“Well, help me remember then.” He smiled with a nod. Kathy turned away and he reached up and pulled her chin back as he looked down and pulled her eyes up to his. The act gave her chills as she quickly pulled away and stood up. It was something Mel did “What’s the matter?” he asked with surprised.
Kathy shook her head “Nothing…”
Mel narrowed his eyes suspiciously “Why do I get the feeling that you are not who you say you are?”
She looked at him in the eye as she searched for an answer, but something told her he was just going with his gut instincts. He hasn’t remembered anything yet. Kathy smiled slowly “Sorry…this is really hard for me. Seeing my…my brother looking at me like I’m some stranger. It’s hard…” she nodded.
His face softened as he took her explanation “I see. I wish I could remember, I really do. But…”
“I understand.” Kathy nodded, she turned away when her tears began to well up. She scolded herself not to cry in front of him.
But it was too late, he already saw a tear drop to the floor “Hey…don’t cry, Katie. It’ll be okay.” He opened his arms as she walked over to him like a zombie. He reached out and pulled her into his chest “If I never remember, I will always take care of you…because you’re my sister.”
Kathy closed her eyes as she choked back a sob, she hugged him dearly “I know...” she breathed into his neck. She couldn’t hide back the cries waiting to explode as she pulled away suddenly “I’m sorry I have to go now…Caitlyn will explain everything to you.” She got up and rushed out of the room.
