Kevin and Ann remained in the library where they continued to look for books that might be able to help them. Kevin was staring at a book, looking dazed when Ann patted him on the shoulder. Startled, he turned to her with raised eyes “What is it Ann?”
She began speaking with her hands ‘Are you okay?’
He nodded with a smile “Yeah. I’m just worried.”
‘About what?’ she sat down next to him with a look of concern.
“What if we don’t make it? What if the world is doomed? What if everyone we care for will die because we couldn’t destroy these creatures? They multiply everyday and will kill until there is no more to kill.” He was overwhelmed.
She let out a short sigh and reached out to embrace him. He returned the hug dearly, saving the world was too much on a person’s shoulders. Ann moved away as she cradled his chin in her hand ‘Whatever happens, we will know that we tried our best. Don’t think, we need to read.’ She turned her head to the opposite endless shelves of books ‘I’ll look over there.’
“Be careful.” Kevin nodded as he watched until she disappeared into the row “Back to the drawing board.” It seemed like hours later until he finally looked up from the book he was reading. His eyes blurry from all the concentration “Ann?” he called to make sure she was still there.
She peeked her head out of the third row. Smiling as she waved to him but he could barely see her. Suddenly, her face paled over when she saw a creature sneaking up behind Kevin. Her eyes widened as she began to make sounds. Kevin tilted his head strangely “Did you find something?”
She shook her head desperately, the creature was getting closer. She stepped closer and continued to make the throaty warnings. He got up from his chair and blinked profusely to get his eyes to focus. Ann opened her mouth and forced herself to scream, her face turned red and tears were welling up in her eyes. Her mind so worried for him that she forgot about her gun. Grabbing her throat, she forced herself to make a sound. Tears coming fast as she felt her throat burning “Ann!” he rushed towards her causing the creature to screech it’s horrible tone. He turned to see the beak slashing towards him.
“Kevin!!” a female voice cried but he had his eyes closed ready to endure the pain. But a gunshot caused him to jump when he realized he was still in one piece.
Christian slowly dropped his arm “You are so lucky.”
Kevin breathing slowed as he smiled thankfully “Thank you.”
“You can thank Alex. She told me to check on you.” He retrieved his gun and nodded at Ann “Go see how your girl is doing.”
“Alex?” he searched around for his friend. There was a female voice that called him. His eyes widened as he turned to Ann “You called my name?”
Her face was drenched in sweat as she reached for Kevin’s helping hand “K…Ke…Kevin.” She stuttered.
Kevin was excited as he hugged her and laughed at the same time “You can talk!! Oh my God…it’s a miracle.” He pulled away, his lips stretched out in a grin.
“Did someone call me?” Alex said from the door. Her smile snapped away when she saw the creature “Ew…”
“Alex!” Kevin rushed over to her “She can talk now! Ann can talk!”
Christian leaned on one leg as he changed his ammunition on the gun “She’s not actually talking because all she said was K…Ke…Kevin.” He mimicked.
“It’s still a start.” Alex nodded convincingly.
Kevin grinned happily “That’s positive thinking!”
Alex grimaced “You don’t have to scream, I’m standing right here.”

Tammy was busy doing her own search in the hallway, she noticed the dried blood had turn an orange color “Kyle, look at this.” When he didn’t answer, she turned to find the door leading to the roof top open. Her stomach turned, maybe one of the creatures got through?
Finding the courage as she approached it and decided in the end to take a chance just in case Kyle was on the roof. The stairs circled in the dimly lit staircase. When she reached the top of the roof, she found him smoking a cigarette “I didn’t know you smoke.”
Kyle turned to her with a blank expression “What are you doing here? Aren’t you afraid?”
“Afraid? Yes, but more afraid for you. It’s not safe up here.” Her eyes moved up to the sky and noticed the creatures were not around “Come on Kyle.” She walked towards him and reached for his arm only to be whipped away.
“Leave me alone! We’re all going to die anyways, what does it matter if we live another day or two?” he barked.
Tammy’s eyes hardened “If you’re are going to be negative about it, obviously we will not defeat these creatures. I know it doesn’t look good and maybe sitting around waiting for Kevin to find a way to break the curse isn’t the best thing. But we don’t have a choice.”
“If I die then I wouldn’t need to worry about that.” He narrowed his eyes to keep the smoke from entering them.
“What happened to you Kyle?” Tammy shook her head in disappointment “I thought you were better than that. Maybe I was wrong.”
He turned away from her “Maybe you were.”
“I’m not leaving you here.” She said firmly.
“Don’t be stupid. Those things can come back any--” he heard her screech as he spun around and witnessed the creature capturing her with it’s claws, throwing his cigarette down, he made a leap over the ledge to pull her back. The beast didn’t expect the extra weight as it dropped the two of them. Kyle was holding onto her feet while one hand gripped the ledge of the roof “Tammy!! Don’t move!”
She had a perfect view of the rocks and crashing waves below her “Kyle! It’s coming back!”
“Use your gun!” his grip was loosening but he was determined to hold on “I should have gone to the gym.” He muttered to himself.
Tammy pulled the gun deep in her pocket as she turned her body when the creature came at her again, closing her eyes she pulled the trigger and shot at it’s stomach “Ah! Did I get it?”
Christian turned to the group “Shhh! Did you hear that?” he asked.
“Ew, is it a creature?” Alex began spinning around to watch her back.
“No.” Kevin agreed, “It was a scream. Is that Tammy? I know Mila doesn’t scream.”
Christian nodded as he walked down the hall and he quickly noticed the door to the roof ajar “Shit! They’re on the roof!” he sprinted with the other three quickly following after.
“What’s going on?!” Mila cried from the bottom of the stairs.
“They’re in trouble!” Alex pointed.
“Ooh, fun!” she yanked at Jerry to come up with her.
Christian reached the top first as he saw a creature circling the roof “Tammy! Where are you?”
Kyle’s face was beet red as he tried hard to hold on “We’re here!” he managed to shout.
“Christian, be careful!” Alex was concern as she watched him run to pull Kyle up. Kevin too rushed over to help.
“Hold on Tammy!” Christian yelled below. They were able to pull Kyle to safety and eventually Tammy.
“Guys, hurry!!” Alex yelled. She pointed to the sky.
Christian supported Tammy while Kevin helped Kyle up. They began running for their lives when a creature came whooshing downwards trying to use it’s claw to catch another victim “Kevin!” Ann yelled again. He didn’t bother turning, instead he dove to the ground. But Kyle was not that fortunate.
He was yanked from the ground “Kyle!” Tammy turned to Christian desperately “Please, help him, he saved my life.”
Letting out a sigh, he sprinted towards the beast, one hand with a gun as he shot the animal in the head causing it to let go of Kyle. They were barely over the ledge as Christian leaned over and caught Kyle’s raised arm “Gotcha! You are one lucky bastard.” He pulled him over and together they ran back to the others.
Mila dropped her jaw as she stared at Christian with pure lust “I have never wanted you more.”
“That’s…eh…flattering.” He managed to say while ushering the rest inside.
They group sat in the kitchen, the silence was deafening. Ann was tending to Tammy’s scratches while Christian crossed his arms, staring intently at Kyle, who had his head lowered in shame “If you wanted to die, you could just use the gun.” Mila began.
“I’m sorry.” Kyle replied earnestly.
“We can’t have you running around asking for a death sentence and have to save your ass every time.” Christian shook his head “You’re going to drag us all with you and this may come to a surprise to you but I actually want to live.”
“You were lucky once, but it won’t happen again.” Alex nodded in agreement “Poor Tammy has to endure this with you. Even if you don’t think about yourself, think for her. She actually cares!”
Tammy smiled “We all do.” She insisted in which Alex rolled her eyes away.
Kyle looked up for the first time “I’m sorry guys. I won’t do that again. I can’t even help myself, how do I expect to save the world? Why did I get chosen? I’m useless.” He said in defeat.
Alex sighed, “I’m going to tell you what the monk told me when I asked him the same question. Why you? Why not the guy that delivered your mail? Or the woman that you flirted with in the bar that one Saturday--”
“I don’t go to bars.” Kyle wrinkled his brows strangely.
“It’s a figure of speech!” Alex groaned, she turned to Kevin “I can’t…you do it.”
He grinned at his friend’s attempt to sound spiritual and mysterious “What Alex is trying to say is that we were chosen for a reason. Whether to learn from each other or try to work together. It’s not something that we can comprehend, it’s written in the books. It’s just the way fate works and we have to accept it. If not, the world is gone as we know it.”
“Yeah, you say it much better than me.” Alex nodded with a grin.
Christian had enough of Mila’s staring “Can you not do that?”
“Do what?” She grinned menacingly.
“Stare.” He replied curtly “I’ve only got eyes for one girl.”
“Well you had eyes for another girl before this girl. So? You can find another eye for me.” Mila replied smartly.
“I know one girl is Tammy, but who’s the other?” Kevin scratched his head.
Jerry laughed suddenly catching their attention “Did you realize this is our first civilized conversation? All the others ended with a quarrel or disagreement. I think we might make it after all.”
“What do we do now?” Alex asked Jerry “Since you seem to notice everything.” She added.
He smiled “Dear Alex, you shouldn’t ask me. Ask your friend.”
“Who? Kevin?” she asked with raised brows “Why?”
“He knows more than you think.” Jerry replied mysteriously.
“Nah, I think you know more than we think.” Alex said convincingly “How do you know so much? Are you one of those superstitious people just like Kevin? Did you spend half of your life reading about legends and curses and bullshit books that are written to find suckers like you?”
“Alex!” Kevin cried.
She turned with rolled eyes “Sorry. Bullcrap.” Ann stifled a laugh as Alex flicked a brow upwards “Oh, you think it’s funny? So come on, you can talk now, throw something out.” She challenged.
“She what?” Kyle asked in surprise “When did this happen?”
“Earlier, pay attention!” Alex snapped. She nodded to Ann “Say something.”
Ann nodded as she cleared her throat “K…Kevin.”
Kyle dropped his jaw as he began clapping “That was great!” Tammy nodded happily.
“That’s amazing.” Mila nodded in agreement.
Alex was sarcastic “She can only say his name.”
“Not…t…true.” Ann stammered.
“Fine, I take it back.” Alex shrugged “I don’t know about you dorks, but I’m tired. I didn’t even sleep last night.” She got up and covered a yawn.
“I’ll go with you.” Christian said as he too stood up.
She grinned mischievously “Ooh, you want to sleep with me?” she winked. His face turned a crimson red “Oh my gosh, you’re blushing!” she pointed.
“Shut up.” He quickly rushed out of the room, leaving the rest of them laughing.
