The room filled with an aura of melancholy. It was their last day of class and it seemed the group had grown attached to their weekly meetings. When everyone was seated, Billie looked at the clock until it turned 8pm. She gave the door one last glance before locking it. She paused for a few seconds, what was she hoping for? She thought to herself what if he came, how would she react?

Billie turned to the class and noticed a few heads turned to the backroom with one missing student “Aren’t you going to wait for Travis?” Jimmy asked.

“He knows the rules.” She replied. Moving towards the class, she smiled “Take a good look around. Everyone here has been on the same boat at one time or another. Wherever this class has taken you, I hope you all will leave with a new knowledge and new discovery of yourself as well as the opposite sex.”

“Ahem!” Jim, the obvious homosexual in the class cleared his throat loudly, causing the group to chuckle amongst themselves.

“As well as the same sex.” Billie smiled. Her eyes moved up to her friends, as they looked at her sympathetically “Today’s topic is how to prepare for marriage, if and when you have found the right person.” She returned to her desk and sat on the edge, a comfortable position she felt at home with “But then I realized, who am I to teach you how to keep the one you love when I myself have failed over and over?” a few heads turned in confusion “Love is not something everyone can find. To everyone, it means something else. It could mean lust, compatibility, trust, loyalty etc. Is there such a thing as true love out there? I was a believer at one time but at times I will disagree.”

Ellena’s eyes were red as she easily teared up, she stood up “I believe there is true love. You made me believe that.” She turned to Kyle, who stood up next to her. Their hands entwined and Ellena pulled it up for everyone to see.

Kyle continued “You taught me a man can change his ways when he finds that perfect girl. I have found mine.”

“Not everyone is lucky as the two of you.” Billie replied calmly “Some takes years to find the perfect person, some takes months and there are some that never find it.” She shook her head “But it doesn’t mean those people will live a life of ultimate loneliness. Companionship is everywhere. It’s in your neighbors, it’s in your friends and loved ones. If you think about it, you won’t ever be alone until you separate yourself from those that care for you. Most people go into hiding, I myself have done it this weekend. But remember, time alone is not a bad thing, it gives you time to recuperate and really put the important things in your life into perspective. Why do humans have to love? Is it all that necessary? What is their true fear? To be alone for the rest of their lives? But the pain carries with each person regardless of how in love they appear to be. It is human nature to have pain.”

“Pain is only something you make happen.” Anesa spoke up.

Anton nodded in agreement “Maybe some people like that sort of love pain? It keeps them feeling alive.”

Billie smiled as she looked down to the floor, she knew what her friends were trying to tell her “I suppose.” She turned to the other students with unblinking eyes “True love is something people strive for, it gives them a destination to reach, a hurdle to jump over. To know there is something that magnificent that can make you melt just at the thought of the other person…it’s nice.” She said simply with a distant grin “So I leave you guys with that idea, to see true love as a destination. I wish everyone could find theirs one day, but remember there are consequences in exchange for everything good. Games are materialistic obstacles that you will never accomplish. Be truthful…” she faded when she had a sudden urge to turn to the door. His eyes dug into hers desperately but she turned away instead. She had no idea how long he was standing out there and how much he heard.

“It’s Travis.” A girl noticed.

“Go open the door.” Kyle nudged Anesa.

“Why me?” she hissed.

“Because he’s your best friend and roommate.” He whispered in return.

Anesa turned to Ellena “Well, then you should go. She won’t yell at you.”

Anton got up “I’ll open it.” He jogged down the stairs and made no attempt to give Billie eye contact. He unlocked the door and let Travis in.

“Thanks.” He smiled gratefully. Billie moved off the desk as she turned her body to him, eyes blank. It was hard to read if she was angry “To answer your question that day.” He began and stepped closer to her “I did think of the consequences of my actions. I knew if I told you the truth, you would be angry. If I didn’t tell you, I risk that you would find out the truth eventually. If you think about it, it was a no win situation.” He smiled weakly.

“If it’s a no win, what are you doing here?” she asked.

“Because I’m willing to fight for the win. Even if I lose and end up dying in this room, I want that chance. I don’t want to regret and know that I didn’t give it one last push. Someone once told me, if you love someone bad enough, you’d try anything. So I’m trying.” He begged her with his eyes.

She blinked her eyes, allowing a tear to fall “I can’t guarantee that this will end up happily ever after.” She choked out a smile.

His heart seemed alive again as it began to quicken. Stepping towards her, he took her face in his hands “Then I’ll guarantee it.” He leaned down and kissed her passionately. Her giggles were drowned out by the loud applause coming from the class. They had stood up unanimously giving the two a standing ovation. The girls looked teary eyed while the guys grinned happily for their fellow male classmate.

“Score!!” Kyle threw a punch in the air with a laugh.

The six lingered back after Billie excused the class after just 9pm. Kyle nodded to Billie and Travis’s linked fingers “Looks like not even lightening can break that apart.” He teased.

“How’s celibacy working for you Kyle?” Billie threw back with a laugh as the other two guys winced.

“Ouch, right below the belt!” Travis laughed.

“Literally.” Anton added.

Kyle pushed his head up “How do you know we haven’t done it?”

Ellena nudged him roughly in the ribs while Anesa cracked up “Because of that. You know someone wears the pants in this relationship.”

“Abstinence is good for the soul, you guys should try it.” Kyle mocked.

Travis wrapped his arm around Billie’s shoulder “Nah, I like the sex part.” He gave her a rough kiss on the cheek.

“Honey, you need a shave.” Billie rubbed her face painfully.

He had forgotten about his appearance as he touched his face “You’re right.” Nodding to the other four “We’ll meet up tomorrow for dinner.”

“Okay. Have fun.” Anesa sang. She turned to the others “How about a drink?”

“I’m up for it.” Anton agreed.

Kyle and Ellena turned to each other “I’ll go if you go.” She said casually.

“Do you want to go? I know you don’t drink.” He said thoughtfully.

“But you like going there.” Ellena pointed out “If you want to go, I’ll go with you.”

“Oh come on!” Anesa groaned, “It’s just a drink, not a marriage proposal, you don’t have to think twice. It’s either a yes or a no!”

Anton laughed, “She’s got a point.”

“Maybe for an hour.” Kyle suggested and Ellena quickly agreed with a nod.

The four walked out of the building together and it was Ellena that noticed two people being pushed into a van as it took off with screeching wheels “Hey…isn’t…”

“Crap! The planned kidnap!” Anesa pointed hastily and turned to Anton, who began to a make a phone call.

****************Three months later**************

It was a beautiful blue sky day as the happy couple stood in front of the alter, where all their friends and family witnessed the vows being exchanged. The parents of the bride were in tears and the guests were happy for them “She looks beautiful.” Anesa whispered to Anton.

He smiled “You look more beautiful.” He kissed her lightly on the cheek and returned to the service.

“Her dress is beautiful.” Ellena agreed with a nod “Look at the beading. Damn her and her beautiful figure.”

Anesa eyed Kyle carefully “Great, look what you did. She hung around you so much, she’s cursing and everything.”

“No, she picked that up from you potty mouth!” Kyle hissed.

Billie and Travis exchanged smiles “Guys, have a little respect!” Travis scolded like a teacher “We’re here to support Kelly and Jimmy.”

“Party pooper. You must be really dull in bed.” Anesa mocked with a roll of the eyes.

“Actually, I beg to differ.” Billie added with a sly grin while the girls groaned with disgust and the guys turned to Travis with a winning smile. She caught the wink from Kyle to Travis “He’s good but not THAT good.” Her comment earned stifled laughs from the girls.

She turned to her boyfriend who nodded with a crooked grin “I’ll show you tonight.”

Billie laughed with a shaking head as she concentrated on the exchange of rings. Anesa quickly disregarded the scolding as she leaned towards Billie “Can I be your maid of honor when you two get married?”

Ellena gaped at her in shock “Anesa!”

“What? Travis is my best friend.” She argued.

“Billie is mine.” Ellena fought back “And it’s the bride’s choice. She will obviously pick me.” She said with confidence and turned to Billie threateningly “You better pick me.”

“Fine, then I’m designing your dress.” Anesa took the second most important job.

“Now that’s more like it.” Ellena nodded in agreement.

Billie raised her hand “Can the bride say something?”

“No.” the girls replied in unison and laughed at the response.

“Well, thanks for planning my life girls but we’re not getting married any time soon.” Billie turned to Travis for confirmation.

“Yeah, we agreed marriage is just a word that gives rules and regulations to a couple. I mean, if it’s not broken don’t fix it.” He kissed her softly on the cheek.

Billie grinned “But you two are welcome to go ahead of me.” She nodded with raised brows.

“That is if Anton is willing to take nose dive into a waterless pool.” Kyle laughed at his own analogy.

“Shut up, stupid.” Anesa snapped.

They stood up as the couple was announced husband and wife. Soon, the party moved into the banquet room. The food was served within an hour. They had fun watching the bride and groom being center of attention as well as games made up by the audience. Soon, the dance floor was put out and ready to be used. Before Travis even said it, she already read his mind as the two got up and walked out of the room without another word. Sharing another dance at the gazebo, they smiled into each other’s eyes “This was nice.”

“The dance or the wedding?” Travis asked as he dipped her playfully.

She giggled and answered “Both.”

“If you had to guess, who do you think out of us three couples would get married first?” Travis asked.

Just as he finished his question, they heard an ear piercing scream from the party. The two smiled and turned to each other “Anesa.” Billie and Travis answered together with a laugh. Shaking their heads, they walked back inside hand in hand.
