After he realized this, he dreaded waking up in the morning to go to work. Although he didn't have to do anything hard since Jim was his 'boss' and he wouldn't dare give Jacky any work. He basically had nothing to do all day. It was a Monday but he wished it was a Friday. He still had another two months to work undercover. Although he uncovered many different things from people, there were still others that made him question their work habits.
************
Annie woke up Monday morning feeling great. She was well rested and she made sure she had enough to eat since her incident at the hospital. She finally got a call from Hung Corp, the hiring manager gave her the good news. They were not going to hire anyone. But the assistant of Miss Lai, a manager of one of the departments, quit unexpectedly. Therefore an open position came in for Annie. She was ecstatic to know that she got the job.
She changed into her best white collar shirt, it was a little big but she didn't really care. Her pin stripe pants were dragging on all sides of her legs. It was the best looking clothes she had in her closet. Her home was really close to her new work place so she planned to walk there.
She grabbed her purse and jacket as she left the apartment. The streets were crowded as usual, she made sure she was early on the first day to give herself a good impression with her new boss. Annie opened the double glass doors and chased the full elevator that was going up. Someone held the door open for her, it was a guy with spiked hair and streaks of highlights. She nodded politely at him while everyone else groaned in disapproval. When the doors opened to the 20th floor, everyone pushed out of the castrophobic little box. Annie looked up and found the reception area with a huge sign that read Hung Corporation. She smiled proudly as she was now an employee.
She glanced at her watch as she entered the already busy place. Architects had their own little offices, while their assistants were in cubicles placed in the center of the rounded room. Even the offices were designed with such fabulous work. She was in awe with everything, forgetting that she was to meet her new boss in five minutes.
The lady stood behind Annie when she cleared her voice loudly. "Ahem! Miss, I don't know about you, but most of us work at eight." her voice was full of authority.
Annie turned around and glanced at her watch "But its 7:55" she replied timidly, unsure of the person standing in front of her.
"Look at that clock and tell me it doesn't read 8:02." the lady demanded as she pointed a sharp finger at the huge round clock to Annie's left.
She didn't know what else to say but "Sorry." she mumbled. A few people snickered in the backround while she heard some giggles. Lowering her head to hide her red cheeks.
"What's your name? Are you new here?" the woman asked.
"Annie, its my first day." she looked up slowly.
The woman seemed to be disappointed as she realize this frumpy girl was her new assistant. "Annie Chu?" she nodded at her new boss "Come with me." her voice was cold and harsh as she walked towards her big office. As she walked inside, she ordered "Close the door and have a seat." taking a comfortable stride behind her leather seat as she sat down. "Now that we have your time schedule settled. I will explain to you a little about me and your job."
"Yes Mam." Annie said respectfully.
The lady rolled her eyes "Don't ever call me that. I prefer Miss Lai. I've never been married and I don't like to be called Mam, its just so old." her wrinkles at the corner of her eyes seemed to contradict her words as they were visible to the naked eye. Annie didn't want to be rude as she nodded "You will type any documents that I have for you, run ANY errands that I ask you to do, and you are not to attend or help anyone but me. Understood?"
"Yes, Miss Lai." she said obediently. Annie suddenly felt herself being in some sort of a boot camp.
The lady nodded with a fake smile on her face, approving of Annie's response. "Also, I do not want to see you talking to anyone out there. We don't pay you to talk to other employees. Everyone is very busy here and no one has time to talk to you."
Annie was afraid to ask, she didn't know where her seat was and she had a feeling her new boss wouldn't be so kind in helping her. "Well, what are you waiting for?" she pointed to the doors "Get to work. You just got 7 free minutes."
"I...I don't know where my seat is." she stuttered.
Miss Lai gave her an exasperated look "Go outside and past about 5 cubicles on your right, you will see a stack of blue files on your desk."
Annie wasted no time as she got up and nodded politely before walking out of the congested room. She let out her breath and walked to where Miss Lai told her to go. When she got to her desk, she didn't expect the stack to be so high. There must have been at least 20 files. Her desk was in the corner, away from everyone else's cubicle, which she didn't mind at all, that way no one would bother her. She sat down and turned on her computer, excited to get to work. It was funny, even after that realization that her boss was a big jerk, she still wanted to work. Usually, people like Miss Lai would intimidate her, but this was her dream Company.
Jacky noted how rude Miss Lai was to the new girl. He remembered her from the elevator ride up. She was plain, with her hair pulled back in a bun and a few strands that flew out of place. Her glasses were always sagging and her braces were a distraction from her smile. He wondered how this girl would react to his disguise. Jacky had long given up on the other people, they were all so mean and rude. And there were those that worried too much about work, so they could careless about some gay co-worker.
A few minutes before lunchtime, Jacky put back his notebook and got up from his desk. He took a deep breath, ready for another disappointing reaction. "Hello." he said sweetly as he stood over her cubicle.
Annie heard a feminine voice greet her, the first person that said hi to her all morning. She looked up and only found a guy. He leaned on little divider of her cubicle "Hi." she said timidly.
"You new here? Im Jacky." he put out his hand and when she was about to shake it, he quickly pulled back "I would shake your hand but I just got my nails done." he pulled his fingers to his lips and blew at them.
She smiled showing her full set of braces "Im Annie. So how long have you worked here?"
"A long time!" he exaggerated with a wave of a hand.
"Years?" she asked, he looked so young though. Suddenly she remembered him from the elevator, he held the door open for her.
"Just a month but it feels like years!" he laughed at his own joke while Annie smiled. "Well come on. Its lunch time."
"Oh no, I have too much work. Anyways, I already have lunch." she leaned over and pulled out an apple from her big knit purse.
He rolled his eyes "Work, it'll always be there. An apple is no lunch. Come on, my treat? Welcoming the new employee?" he seemed so insistant that she couldn't say no. He was pleased to know that there was at least one decent person at his father's company.
"Okay." she said as she reached for her purse.
He took her to a little cafe down the street from their building. Jacky ordered sandwiches for both of them, he stared after the waiter with adoring eyes. But suddenly his eyes moved to a single customer sitting by himself at one of the booths. He seemed to be drooling over him.
Annie tried to hide her embarrassment from the guy that sat across from her. She didn't mind that he was gay but she felt weird that he kept staring at other men. She sipped her drink slowly while Jacky blew kisses at the guy in the booth. "Isn't he cute??!" he gushed to Annie, who just nodded.
The guy was uncomfortable of the obvious gawking guy across the table from him. He paid for his food and quickly got up, walking by Jacky without a glance. Jacky looked like he was about to grab him. When the guy continued on his way,. Jacky sighed with disappointment "Another fish lost in the sea." he said dramatically.
She muffled a giggle "You're very different." she said.
He twirled his straw in his glass of soda. "Is that a compliment?"
She shrugged her shoulders "I guess." their food came as she began to dig into her food. She was starving.
"You got a boyfriend?" His forward question made her choke on her food. She didn't expect such a personal question. She covered her mouth with a napkin as she coughed up the half swallowed food. "I'll take that as a no?" his eyes arched up.
She shook her head "I've never had one." she said between chews. Her red face was clearing up.
"NEVER?!!" he asked with dismay. She lowered her head again, he was just so loud. "I'll be darned! I've never met one of you before." his comment made it seemed like she was some sort of alien.
"It's nothing to be shocked about. Guys just don't like me." she said in defense.
He covered his mouth and looked around at everyone that was staring at them. He leaned over the table as he blocked the side of his mouth and whispered to her "Are you a virgin?"
Her face was quickly turning red, "Don't tell me you've never met a virgin." she whispered back.
He leaned back on his seat and crossed his arms "Actually, I have." he thought about it as he leaned his elbow on the table "Joe was a virgin." he covered a giggle with his hand "So was Danny. And Chad was not a virgin once I was done with him."
Annie shook her head in dismay, she couldn't believe what she was hearing. "Well, Im gonna be an old maid and a virgin." she said with a tone of depressed.
He tilted his head thoughtfully "Of course not. I won't hear of it! You just need a little make over."
He was too much, just on the first day of meeting her and he was already trying to change her. "Trust me, nothing will help." she took the last bite of her sandwich and glanced at her watch. "OH!!" she pointed to it. "We're going to be late!!" she exclaimed as she reached for her purse.
"Oh please, Im still eating." he took a slow bite of his half eaten sandwich.
"Well, I gotta go. Thanks for lunch, I'll treat next time." she rushed out the door.
"Hey!!" he threw down his sandwich with a slight tantrum as he pulled out his wad of cash and threw it on the table. He quickly got up and ran after Annie.
The rest of the day went by quickly for Annie as she finished all of the twenty files on top of fetching whatever Miss Lai wanted her to. By the time she left for home, her desk was piled up with files again. Miss Lai had called her in at the last minute and gave her more stuff for the next day. She sighed tirelessly as she covered a yawn, exhausted from the first long day. She looked around for Jacky, but he was no where in sight. She began to wonder if he would be the only friend she would make in the company. Everyone seemed so busy with their own work.
