The darkened chaotic room was soon lit again. Erin and Brad’s hands were tightly entwined and it was visible to Mia who had on a grin so wide that it made the two new love birds let go “What happened?” Brad asked, trying to diverge the attention away from them.
Suddenly a shriek came from a woman standing not too far from Brad and Erin. The five of them rushed over as people hovered over a man who had been shot “Call the police!!” someone cried while others whispered amongst themselves.
The five exchanged glances “Who is he?” Erin wondered out loud.
“He’s on the list of the top ten richest man in Hong Kong.” Darren concluded.
Mia turned to him with wide eyes “You don’t think….” Before she could finish, Darren shook his head for her not to continue. It wasn’t the time and definitely not the place to presume things.
“Come, we should get back.” Brad nodded as they snuck out before the cops came and stopped everyone.
When they were safe inside their secret headquarter, Mia turned to the group “Any of you guys think that Michael did it?”
Erin snickered “I think it’s a little obvious, but I’m curious why he would kill that man? I mean, why him?”
“Maybe he wants to be the richest guy in Hong Kong.” Mia muttered to herself.
“Wait!!” Darren clapped his hands, startling Mia “Sorry…” he smiled “You are so smart!!” he gushed while giving her a rough kiss on the cheek.
She winced in pain and rubbed her face “I know, but you don’t have to flatten my face.”
Darren laughed “No, you hit it on the nose.”
Doug frowned as he crossed his arms “You mean, Michael’s plan is too kill off everyone on the top ten list so he can be the richest guy in Hong Kong? But why would it matter if he was?”
Darren looked over at Erin who had a small smile on her face “You know don’t you?”
She shrugged “I’m not positive.”
“Let’s hear it.” Brad smiled with pride. He wanted to see if she had the same idea he had.
Erin tilted her head thoughtfully “There is a prestigious charity event at the end of the year where the wealthiest man in Hong Kong is invited to bid on an ancient artifact worth millions of dollar. This year’s artifact is an indestructible safe.” Darren nodded with a smile.
Mia frowned “But why would he want it?”
Brad patted her on the head like a puppy “Innocent little Mia, what have we been trying to find out from this guy?” she only shrugged innocently and he continued “Proof that he’s been smuggling drugs into the country using kids. There is no proof he’s behind it, but if he gets a hold of that safe, he can hide all the paper work and concealing it forever.”
“Isn’t that a lot of trouble? Why don’t he just dig up the ground and put the stuff in there? That way no one will know where it is buried. It sounds like it’s way too complicated.” Mia shook her head.
Darren laughed “You underestimate the mind of Michael Wu. If you want to catch him, you have to think like him.” He tapped his temple with his index finger.
Suddenly there was a clapping sound behind them, it was Joe and he had a proud smile on his face “Great job. Now you guys are thinking like agents.” He walked into the room and pointed for everyone to sit “So, what did you all discover?”
“Michael Wu likes a challenge.” Erin nodded.
Darren crossed his arms as he spun his chair to face Joe “He’s going to be after the other 8 richest men in Hong Kong.”
Mia turned to Darren with a worried expression “Aren’t you one of them?”
He smiled “Number five.”
“How about Michael?” Brad asked with curiosity.
“Six.” Darren sighed.
“You’re going to be on that list?” Mia asked with a worried expression “What are we going to do?” she turned to them. “Let’s kill him before he can kill anyone else.”
Joe shook his head at the hasty girl “Then we are not any less sneaky as Michael Wu. The P.R.A. does not snoop to any level lower than the scum of the earth. I will have a plan, just give me time to think.” After a moment, he turned to Erin “He had a special liking to you didn’t he? Even when he knew you were working against him.”
She shrugged “I don’t know, he was just a guy that couldn’t take a no.”
Mia smiled “More like you stomped on his ego and dumped it in the trash.”
Erin laughed as she shook her head at her friend “You sure can paint a picture.” She noticed Brad’s serious face “What’s wrong?” she leaned in closer to him.
He shook his head “I’m just worried he might do something…”
“To me? Don’t worry, I don’t go for guys that are too pushy. I like passive, naďve, dorky guys.” She couldn’t hide the smile when Brad narrowed his eyes at her.
Doug was quiet until he looked up at everyone and asked “Why do you suppose he wants to marry that girl…oh gosh, what’s her name…” he snapped his finger at Brad “That perfume freak.”
“Christina?” Brad asked.
“Yes!” Doug smiled “She doesn’t seem like at all his type. The two immediately split up the minute they were in the mansion. They were like hawks looking for prey.” He shivered just thinking of the way the girl was all over him.
“More like two cats in heat.” Mia muttered “You should have seen the way he looked at Erin. What a psycho.” She shook her head with disgust.
Joe nodded thoughtfully and when he looked up he smiled at the group “It’s getting late, why don’t you all go home now. We’ll continue this next week. I have to fly to Beijing for some conferences. Just keep in touch with each other and DON’T get killed.” He watched as everyone left slowly but kept his eye on Erin. When she passed his chair, he nodded to her “I want to talk to you.”
Erin looked up at Brad and he nodded “I’ll wait for you outside.”
“Awww, how cute!!” Mia squealed as she grabbed onto Darren’s arm “Will you wait for me, Darren?” she asked in a syrupy voice making Darren shiver.
“Not if you talk like that.” Darren scolded.
Brad placed his hands on his hips while Doug laughed humorously “You watch it or I’ll make you take those sky diving lessons again.” He threatened Mia. She widened her eyes fearfully and covered her mouth with her hand. Brad pushed them out and closed the conference room door before giving Erin a quick smile.
Her eyes were still glued to the door even when they were long gone. Joe smiled at her with admiration “I miss that look of love.”
She quickly blushed and turned away “Who said it was love...”
Joe laughed “Don’t fool me, I’m very happy that the two of you have finally gotten together.” Suddenly his smile faded and he leaned back in his chair “Unfortunately, you will have to put a halt on it.”
Erin frowned “What’s that suppose to mean?” she felt her stomach drop.
“The P.R.A. are agents that are trained to protect and serve the people that need the help. In a way, you guys are acting policemen…” Joe started.
“Where are you going with this? Just come out and tell me.” She insisted.
Joe smiled “A woman that’s straightforward can only mean trouble.” He said wisely. Erin nodded with understanding “This agency has never done undercover work before. This might be the one and only time I am requesting that an agent do it.”
“Why me?” Erin shook her head suddenly her eyes moved away “Michael.”
“Very quick.” Joe complimented “I want you to get on his good side, earn his trust. Find out where those papers are, once you get them we can nail the psycho.”
“But…” she was worried for one person.
Joe sighed “I know you and Brad just began and this is probably a very tough mission considering Reina and Andrew will be around. They will give you a hard time, but I have faith in you, Erin. You can do this…be tough and don’t let him discourage you. It’s very wrong of me to break you two up before you even started, but you must understand we have been trying to get this guy for years. We finally found his weak spot…you. If you don’t do this, more lives will be killed.”
“That’s a lot of pressure…” Erin was hesitant. She disliked the guy and never in her life had she made herself like someone that she despised “Can I tell the others?”
Joe shook his head sternly “No, no one must know. The more people that know about this, the bigger the chance of you being in grave danger. I don’t know how you want to handle Brad, but you cannot tell him. You understand, Erin?”
She nodded, her eyes in a daze “Yes, sir.”
“Go on now. I will set up a chance for you to meet Michael and it will seem like an accident. We’ll keep in contact.” Joe got up as he patted her on the shoulder “Consider this test of your love for Brad. If you two can survive this, you’ll survive anything.”
By the time Erin walked outside, everyone else was gone except for Brad who was leaning against the wall “Erin!” he called when he saw her coming out.
She looked up with a grim smile “Hey…”
“What’s wrong?” Brad asked worriedly, he took a hold of her hand and noticed it was icy cold “Are you okay? Your hands are freezing!”
Erin pulled her hand away gently “I’m okay.”
“What did Joe talked to you about?” Brad asked curiously.
“Just work related, he said I did a good job controlling myself tonight. He just asked questions about what I found out from Michael.” Erin answered blankly.
Brad smiled “Well, did it help Joe?” he took her hand as they began walking down the street together.
Erin looked down at their clasped hands and then turned up to Brad “Promise me something?”
He stopped in his steps and turned to her with a strange smile “You’re acting very strange, but I’ll promise you anything. Just name it.”
“If you ever have a change of heart…tell me. I’d much rather know than guess. I will totally understand too. I only hope you can do the same for me.” She didn’t know why she said it but if they were going to break up, she needed closure.
Brad took both of her hands in his “Silly girl. I will never change my heart. You are the girl, no one can ever take your place. No matter what.”
She felt her eyes fill up with tears as she leaned into his chest “I’m sorry….” She whispered and hugged him around the waist.
Brad stroked her hair gently “Erin…what’s wrong? Can you tell me?” he tried to pull her away but she shook her head and continued to hug him. He eventually wrapped his arms around her and rocked her slowly, whatever was bothering her, he would soon find out. He knew her personality well, you could not make her say anything she didn’t want to talk about.
