Three Years Later

It was a cold winter’s day, the air filled with tears for the fallen agent. They lost yet another faithful teammate. The memorial service was taking place before their eyes. The soft sobbing could be heard from the wife as she sat on the side in her white traditional funeral clothing. A pointed hood covered most of her face as she wept away her tears.

The priest stood in the front of the casket with a podium before him “Ladies and Gentlem, we are gathered here in memory of Mr. Douglas Chung. He was a faithful agent and greater husband and friend according to his loved ones. I know everyone will never forget that cold October day when the news interrupted the daily lives…”

Ted patted Erin’s hand as she turned to him with a sad smile. She was dressed in a black pant suit and so was the rest of her teammates sitting in the front row of the tiny chapel. She eyed Mia carefully and turned to the back ever so carefully. Mia lowered her head and let out a somber cry before rushing out of the chapel in tears. Darren stood up and quickly apologized to the guests and priest “Excuse us.” He then followed after his wife.

“Now, without further ado, let’s all give Douglas a last glance before we start the burial.” The priest announced as he stood to the side and called on the ushers to line the people in a row. The team was first to step up as each one bowed carefully and wiped their last tears for Doug.

“We’ll miss you.” Ted said quietly.

Erin bowed to the new widow “Becca, if there is anything we can do. Please let me know.”

Becca turned up with a tearful face “Yes, bring him back!” she cried suddenly as she leaped up and threw her arms onto her dead husband’s body “Don’t leave me, Doug!! Please…I can’t live without you!!”

Erin turned to Ted for help as he quickly took a hold of Becca’s thin shoulders and pried her way from the casket “Becca, don’t be like that. He’s gone…you have to be strong.”

The solemn moment was interrupted by a group of uniformed men “Mrs. Chung?” the man obviously in charged asked Becca. She nodded without answering, “We seemed to be having some problems…eh…with the casket. Apparently, this was not the one you ordered for your husband. We have to take it back…but don’t worry, your husband will have a replacing casket in two minutes.” He guaranteed.

Becca covered her whimpering cries “If that’s what you must do…” she waved them away with her back turned.

The casket was rolled to the holding room where tons of coffins were stored. The guys moved quickly as they yanked open Doug’s casket “Shit, you move the body!” one guy pointed to another.

“I aint touching no dead guy.” He shook his head vehemently.

“Stop arguing and get the body! We have to get the drugs out.” The leader commanded.

“Doooon’ttt…toouuchhh…meeee!!” an eerie voice called out shakily.

The two guys quickly hung onto each other for dear life “What the hell was that?!!”

The leader too looked worried as he turned to Doug’s body, it hadn’t move from it’s position “Who is it?!! This isn’t funny! Show your face!” he demanded while spinning in a circle.

“Youuu…arreee…looooking…attttt…me…” the high pitched voice replied with the same haunting tone.

“I knew it’s haunted!!” one guy cried fearfully “Let’s get out of here.”

“Wait!!” the leader cried as he yanked out his gun and pointed to his men “You step one foot out of here and I’ll blow your heads up! Get your scared asses over here and pull the body out. We have a job to do. I don’t care if this place is haunted!” he growled angrily.

The guys had no choice but to do what they were asked. They stepped over to Doug’s casket and closed their eyes with a bow “Please forgive us…we don’t mean any harm.” Each took one of Doug’s arms and gave his body a little tug upward.

“Awww…thank you.” Doug snapped his eyes open while the two guys jumped back, startled so bad they almost peed in their pants “I was getting cramped up in there.” He laughed at their reaction and jumped out of the casket briskly, not bothered by the shaky gun pointed at him.

“You…you’re not dead?” one guy stammered.

“Dead? Nah…if I was dead, how the hell are we supposed to pin your asses?” Doug replied coolly “Put your gun down, even if you kill me, you wouldn’t get out of here alive.”

The leader pulled back the trigger “I wouldn’t bet on it.”

Doug was motionless with a smile as the lights quickly turned off, leaving the storage room completely pitch black. He quickly moved to the left where a bright dot was calling to him. Mia and Darren hid behind a coffin as they waved a little flashlight at Doug “Where’s the exit?” Doug whispered.

“Straight that way.” Darren replied as he pointed the dim light straight behind his back.

“Come on!” Mia hushed as she pushed the guys to the exit. In her hand was a gas bomb. Easing carefully to the door, they quickly exited before Mia ignited the bomb and closed the door with a bang. She heard a couple of gunshots but it only hit the metal door.

Doug leaned on the door “How long did Ted say to leave them in there?”

“I think he said two minutes, any longer, they will die of suffocation.” Darren was certain.

Mia chuckled “I think he said one minute, honey.” She patted her husband’s arm sweetly “He’s a little forgetful lately.” She nodded at Doug.

“No…he said two minutes.” Darren replied calmly but firm.

Mia’s smile dropped “No, sweetie. He said one minute.” She clenched her teeth with a forced answer.

“Why don’t you two go ask him before we kill them?” Doug nodded his head to the storage room “Thirty seconds.”

Mia and Darren turned to each other with narrowed eyes and together they sprinted down the hall to the chapel. Barging through the doors suddenly, while the team pointed their guns at the intruders. When they realized it was their teammates, they lowered the gun. Ted let out a short sigh “Guys, don’t do that…” he shook his head at them.

“Yeah, whatever.” Mia waved a nonchalant hand at him “Ted, how long did you say to leave those guys with the gas bomb?”

“Two minutes right?” Darren asked quickly.

“Don’t manipulate him!” Mia argued.

Erin grinned with a shaking head “I’m sorry girl, Darren’s right. Two minutes.” She was surprised at the two of them “Three years of marriage and one two year old daughter and still you two can’t even act mature on a mission?”

“No, maturity is not a factor.” Darren argued, “I am just trying to prove that Mia is wrong and I am right…as usual.”

“My ass you are!” Mia protested.

Darren placed the palm of his hands upwards “See, I own her ass, so I’m right.”

Becca checked her watch “Hey guys, we can stand here and watch the show but those guys are going to die.”

Ted nodded with a laugh “Come on.” He jogged to the storage room with the team following close behind. He caught Doug opening the doors and quickly covered his nose from letting the fumes enter it. Ted turned to Darren “Can you get the masks?”

“Sure thing.” He rushed back and retrieved them for the group. They entered and found the three guys sprawled out, unconscious. The guys pulled them out and called for the police. They were arrested for smuggling drugs through coffins and were convicted that very day. With the evidence the P.R.A. had, it was easy to pin them.

The group watched as the sirens died down in the distance “Another great mission!” Becca announced, “Not to mention our acting was superb!”

“Yeah, I didn’t know you could be so dramatic.” Erin teased.

“Hey, I lost a husband! Of course I’m going to be dramatic.” Becca defended herself.

Doug rolled his eyes “Honey, even if I wasn’t dead you would still be dramatic. Remember that last mission when I was shot in the arm. You practically planned out the will. And just for you information Mia, you’re not getting my precious baseball card collections.”

Mia dropped her jaw in shock “Why! I guess we all know who your true friends are! Wait…you don’t have any.” She smirked.

Ted turned to Erin with a smile, they were blessed in the past three years without a stir in the underworld. People were careful since the P.R.A. went public, everyone recognized the popular team and good Samaritans stood out of their ways so they could work. They no longer needed donations from Darren as other higher and richer statures gave them a tremendous amount each year. The headquarters were moved to a more public place near the city hall. The team claimed the entire three floors of the 25 floors Federal Building. They were finally recognized for their had work and earned every bit of prestige and honor awards given to them in the past three years. The fallen agents earned a plague in a glass wall in the new conference room.

“Come on guys, Matt is calling us.” Ted informed as he waved his team to the spotless new van designed for them. It was made out of bulletproof glass and the metal was as thick as an army tank. Doug was the usual driver “Take us to the City View Hill.”

“We’re not going to the headquarters?” Mia questioned curiously, her brows wrinkling.

Ted shook his head “No, he didn’t mention in the page.”

“Don’t break a vessel thinking too hard.” Erin joked with her long time friend “I’m sure whatever it is, Matt has a reason to call us there.”

“Oh, she’s broken too many vessels in high school, she has none left.” Doug said casually making everyone burst into chuckles.

Mia sneered at Doug mischievously “You watch it or I’ll really make Becca a widow, cause it seems you’re too incompetent to have a baby after two years of marriage.”

Becca had the loudest laugh until she let the words sink in “Hey!” she turned to Mia with a frown “Don’t jinx me. I still want a kid.”

“Really? I know this cute neighbor of ours that is single, you interested? I hear he’s ready to settle down.” Mia replied.

Darren crossed his arms at her sternly “Is that what you when I’m drowning at work with paperwork?”

“Putting your legs up on a table and having a smoke is not considered work!” Mia rolled her eyes at her husband. He opened his mouth, ready to argue when she snapped “I have Linda spy on you. I know what you do at all times, just remember that.”

Erin grinned at Darren “Scary isn’t she?” she sighed and shook her head sadly “I warned you.”

“Too late for regrets.” Darren groaned.

The van parked nearby another P.R.A. van as they exited to see Matt in the middle of a plain field with a walkie talkie in hand “Are you guys ready?” he asked into the little hand held device.

“Hey Matt!” Ted greeted.

The lieutenant turned to his experience team “Hey guys. I guess by the looks on your face, I don’t have to ask how it went.”

Mia nodded “Let’s just say, the crooks were gassed out.” She laughed hysterically at her lame joke while the others groaned painfully.

Matt laughed, “That’s funny Mia. Write me a five page report on that. I want it on my desk tomorrow at nine a.m. sharp.”

The others stifled a laugh while Mia protested, “Who came up with this stupid report thing anyways? We’re not cops, why do we have to keep a file for everything we do? Don’t we have the little people to do that?”

“No.” Matt replied firmly while he turned up to the sky, eying the helicopter circling thousands of feet above “Ryan, give me an answer now!”

“Sorry Gor, we’re ready.” Ryan’s voice came in clearly.

“It’s lieutenant to you during working hours!” Matt replied harshly.

Mia winced at Erin “Ouch! Burned by your own brother.”

“Shhh…I don’t think he’s very happy today.” Erin whispered to her friend.

“You can say that again.” Mia snickered while they returned their attention to the new group of agents getting ready for their third lesson in sky diving.
