It was late in the night, but Matt felt it was important for the meeting to be held as the team were called to headquarters for an emergency conference. Chuck was disturbed from his slumber when Erin had to call him “I’m sorry Uncle, but this is really important.”
“It better be.” He groaned and got up to head downtown. When he walked into the room, all eyes turned to him “What?” he asked with one eye open “This is what I look like in the morning.”
“Should we warn Eve?” Jenna quipped.
Leah pulled out her camera phone and snapped a picture “Anyone have her number?”
“Funny.” Chuck replied with sarcasm.
Matt motioned for him to sit at the front seat “First thing’s first. Jenna, what happened to you?” he crossed his arms authoritatively.
She lowered her head in shame “I’m sorry, I wanted to find out if Robert Kwok was behind this. I stole Erin’s pick lock kit and went to his office to find clues.”
“That was too dangerous. You could have been killed.” Ryan said with ruffled brows “Did you find anything?”
Jenna nodded “I found the combination to the safe, it was my father’s birthdate.”
“Coincidence?” Mia wondered out loud.
“I don’t think so.” Jenna said with instincts “But you’ll never guess what I found in there.” The group gave her their full attention “Everyone in the P.R.A.’s bios, including anyone that was involved with team and cases. And I found this.” She pulled out the articles and gave it to Matt. He skimmed through the headlines and widened his eyes “Yeah, that was my reaction too.”
“What does it say?” Ted asked curiously.
Matt handed over the papers to Ted as he read it out loud “Interpol Catches P.R.A. Thieves? Head of P.R.A. Captured.” He turned up to Matt “This was over thirty years ago? There was a group called P.R.A. in London? And they were thieves? So do they have any connection with us?”
“Inquiring minds would like to know.” Becca added eagerly.
The lieutenant sighed, “To be honest guys, I’m not sure what the history of the team is like. All I know is that Joe was the creator.”
“Maybe there’s more behind that than we know?” Jenna thought.
“Too bad we can’t ask him.” Becca muttered, earning a jab from Mia as she nodded towards Jenna, who’s head had lowered sadly “I’m sorry Jenna.”
“No, it’s okay.” She smiled gently.
Matt had to change the subject “Mark, how did you know to find Jenna there?”
He moved in his seat uncomfortably “I promised someone I wouldn’t say.”
“I can tell you. It was Riley.” Jenna said honestly. Mark turned to her with widened eyes “I didn’t promise I wouldn’t tell. Anyways, I’m a little curious myself.” She looked around the table “No one is wondering why he’s not here right now?”
Matt nodded “He didn’t answer my page. Mark, I think we need an explanation.”
The young guy nodded slowly “Tonight around midnight, I got a call from Riley. He said he need me to save Jenna, she’s locked up at his father’s home.”
“His father?!” Jenna exclaimed “Robert Kwok is his father??”
“Yeah, he admitted it to me.” Mark nodded slowly “He didn’t want to call Ryan because of…well, its obvious.” The group nodded “And he didn’t want to call Matt because Ryan is his brother.”
“Why would he help me?” Jenna wondered.
Ryan leaned back in his chair with a snicker “Only he would know. Personally, I never liked the guy and he was always suspicious. We should have guessed when his last name matched Robert’s. I bet you, his background is fake too.”
Matt shook his head “No, it can’t be. Joe did the research himself. He is an orphan.”
“From what age?” Erin asked.
He frowned, trying to remember “Fourteen.”
“So up until he was fourteen, he had a parent?” Erin analyzed.
“You bring up a good question.” Matt nodded “Go get the file from Joe’s office.”
Erin nodded as she got up and walked out towards the hallway. She used her access card to unlock the door. But when she opened, her brows crunched together suspiciously. The entire room was torn apart, someone had broken in and it had to be an inside job. Whatever they were looking for at Joe and Jenna’s apartment, they didn’t find it. She wondered if they found it in here? And who would have access to get inside except for the team and it’s workers?
When it took too long for her to return, Ted was sent in. He stood at the door while Erin was inside the office, in the middle of a fountain of sprawled papers “What the hell happened in here?” he asked.
Erin turned to him “I don’t know. But it has to be an inside job?”
“Definitely, but whom?” he thought.
“Anyone suspicious?” Erin asked shortly.
He smiled crookedly “I think we both have the same idea.”
She smiled slowly “Maybe. What do we do now?”
“Pretend it never happened. Make that person wonder more.” Ted concluded. Erin agreed with a nod as they retrieved the file from the safe which only Ted and Matt knew the combination to. He pulled out Riley’s file. They closed the door and returned to the meeting.
“I forgot I didn’t know the combination to the safe.” Erin smiled.
Matt snapped his fingers “That’s right! Only Ted and I know. Sorry Erin, I forgot.”
“Old age getting to you huh?” Mia asked teasingly.
He laughed comfortably while looking over the file “He had an aunt that lived with him. But she deserted him to get married in Canada. He was only fourteen and lived in the streets on his own.”
“Street rat.” Mark snickered.
“You took the words right out of my mouth.” Ryan smiled.
“So what do we do now?” Darren asked, “Should we bring Michael and Julie in here?”
Ted shook his head “I already scheduled for them to be in a witness protection until. They’re going to send five of the best men to surround them day and night. Since I was at the police station when Erin called me with the news, I figured it would be faster if I did it then.”
“Good teamwork.” Matt nodded proudly “We will still be on call twenty four hours a day, stay on your heels and if there is anyone suspicious don’t let him off.” He saw Mia yawning “It’s getting late and I think you guys are all tired now. Go home and rest. We’ll continue this when there are more clues.”
“Yes sir!”
They began to get up and leave when Mia noticed something “Should we wake Chucky?” she nodded to Chuck, who had fallen asleep on his chair. Arms crossed and snoring away.
Matt smiled “I think he’ll know when he wakes up and notices we’re all gone.”
“Wow, you’re evil!” Becca laughed, “I like your style.”
“He’s picking that up from someone.” Mia sang teasingly. Becca raised her brows curiously “I’m not telling.”
****************
Erin and Jenna returned to find Luke asleep on the couch “You want to take this one.” Jenna smiled knowingly.
She approached the couch and shook him lightly “Hey.” He was startled but relaxed when he realized it was Erin “Why aren’t you sleeping in your room?”
“I was waiting for you girls.” He smiled “Where are the other two?”
“Jenna just went to bed and Reina is in the hospital.” Luke raised his brows in worry “She’s okay. We had a small mission tonight, she was shot but it’s not life threatening.”
He nodded, easing up “Your job is so dangerous, your lives can be taken anytime and anywhere. Have you ever thought about retiring?”
Erin laughed “All the time. But each day I walk into headquarters, I realize it’s where I belong. I can’t quit. I’ll probably end up dying on a mission one day-”
Luke placed a hand over her mouth “Don’t say that.”
She smiled while pulling his hand away “It’s a fact of life. It’s reality, Luke. My life was in danger from the moment I signed the papers to be on the team. I live for the team and I die for the team. If you ask everyone on the team, they will tell you the same thing.”
“You’re my only family now. What would I do without you?” he asked sadly “I had a twin brother that I never got to meet and two parents that I never bothered to find. Two parents that raised me in a life of lies…” he paused with a snicker “It sounds like a soap opera.”
Erin laughed gently “It does.” She looked down at his hands and reached for it “Hey, don’t you worry. As long as I’m still alive, I guarantee that I will die before I’ll let anyone touch you.”
“Don’t say the ‘d’ word.” Luke winced at her promise.
“What? Die?” Erin teased openly. He groaned while she patted his hand “Okay, no more teasing. Come on, go to bed. It’s getting late.”
She got up and pulled him to his feet with her “Yes mother.”
Erin’s face fell slowly “He used to say that.”
“Brad?” Luke asked. She nodded with a small smile “You still miss him don’t you?”
“I do.” She lowered her head “But reality is kicking in.”
“Hey, if you want, you can talk to me like I’m Brad. I don’t mind.” He offered with a grin.
Erin shook her head “Trust me, you don’t want that. We argued all the time…but there were still moments of pure happiness.”
“How about with me?” he asked, trying to make it sound casual.
Erin stopped on the step that she was taking and turned to him “Luke…” he raised a hand to stop her.
“I was only teasing. I don’t want to put you in that situation.” He said understandingly.
“Thank you.” She smiled “Good night.”
“Night.” He watched her until she was inside her room and the door closed behind her.
