A red wine glass in hand, Devin felt relaxed in his large apartment. His legs propped up on the couch as he hummed along to a song on the radio. The meditation was interrupted by a series of knock on the door. Turning off his radio with a push of the button on the control from the couch, he got up to pen the door.
“Uncle Devin!” Jenna grinned happily with her hands behind her back.
“Jenna? What are you doing here? How did you get through security?” he asked curiously, she seldom came to his home only when she needed something.
“To bring you your favorite pie. Apple!” she moved the freshly baked pie around her back to the front “Ta da! Isn’t it beautiful?” she insisted he smell it “The security man was very nice.” She winked.
Devin was onto her game as he smiled and turned to walk back to the couch “Your dad warned me before of your little games. I’m not falling for it.”
“Why, I’m hurt, Uncle!” Jenna said with rounded eyes “I would never play games with you. Can’t a niece bring her uncle a freshly baked pie without a motive?”
He laughed “Sure, but you’re not a normal niece. You’re a sneaky girl that has a power to manipulate any situation to make it seem innocent.”
Jenna shrugged “Fine, then you force me to use my secret weapon.” She moved aside and Mia popped her head through the side of the door.
It only made him laugh louder “Mia is your secret weapon?” shaking his head as he wiped the tears of laughter “You’re losing your touch, Jenna.”
The girls entered the home and closed the door “I resent that. Darren always said I used my sex appeal as a weapon.”
“To your husband, you are a weapon in itself.” Devin reasoned. Sighing as he picked up where he left off. Sipping the wine, he turned to ask the girls “What is it you want? I don’t have time to play.”
Mia nodded to Jenna for her to begin “I have good news and I have bad news.” She began.
“Good news is always nice.” Devin tilted his head at her.
“I got Erin to come back to the team…it came from her lips, I didn’t force her.” She persisted “Really.”
Devin knew it was too good to be true “Bad news?”
Jenna began laughing nervously “Well, it’s not exactly bad news. If you think about it, it might almost be pleasant.”
“You have to pour tea while kneeling and apologizing to Erin in front of the entire team.” Mia blurted out. They looked at him pleadingly “Please…that’s the only way she’ll return.”
“Hmm…let me think.” Devin tapped his chin playfully “Oooh, I know, why don’t we add hot coals to the ground and I can grovel at her feet and kiss it too while I’m down there?”
“Well, that is a little extreme.” Mia began with a roll of the eyes.
“He’s being sarcastic.” Jenna said flatly “Aww, come on Uncle Devin, it just takes a little of your dignity away. No one will dare make fun of you. They might talk behind your back, but I’ll stick up for you.”
He laughed “Thanks, but no thanks. Anyways, knowing Erin, she wouldn’t keep her word even if I did. She is a person that holds onto her pride.”
“Wanna bet?” Mia asked slyly, her brows arched up.
“What’s the wager?” Devin asked, looking a little interested.
“I bet that when you do everything that Jenna just said, Erin will come back AND she will apologize for being so tough with you.” Mia said with confidence.
Devin smiled crookedly “That’s cocky of you Mia.”
“No, just confidence.” She stuck her chin up “So, how about it?”
“A hundred bucks! Deal!” Jenna answered for Devin.
He turned to his niece “Not so fast speedy…a hundred bucks is too little.”
“What do you suggest?” Mia was sure she would win.
“If I lose, you can be Head for a day.” Devin said with a grin.
“Ooh, that’s interesting!” Mia claimed “Hmm…if you win, you can have anything in my home. Including Darren but not Bonnie.”
“Even the Opus One?” Devin asked.
Her smile diminished “That bottle of wine is over a hundred years old, Darren has it in a bullet proof glass case and three locks on it. He’d kill me if I even got near it. He always said it was there to look at not to be tasted.” Devin shrugged ready to call off the bet when Mia announced “Done. It’s a deal!”
“Mia!” Jenna was flabbergasted “Darren will kill you! The last time I pointed to it, he nearly tackled me to the floor.”
“Oh that.” Mia laughed with a flick of a wrist “It’s just his reaction to intruders that look like they’re going to steal his wine. I’ve got a few broken ribs because of that, no big deal.”
Devin arched his brow up and looked strangely at Mia “Ahem! As much as I love hearing about your exciting lifestyle, I’d like to get back to my relaxing.”
*************
The following morning, while Erin was in the restroom, Jenna gathered Doug and Ryan with her in the kitchen “I have a bad feeling about this.” Ryan whispered, “What if she says no?”
“Why are you whispering?” Doug hissed, “She can’t hear us.”
Jenna rolled her eyes “Focus! I asked Chuck to give her a call at nine to tell her that she needed to sign some release form in order to leave the team permanently. The only way to do it was go down to headquarters.”
“Ooh, that’s a good one.” Doug nodded.
“I don’t know guys…” Ryan shook his head “I feel so bad about lying to her.”
Jenna raised her hand and hit him on the back of his head “There! Did I knock your conscience out?”
He pouted and rubbed the back of his head “No, but that hurt.”
“I’m sorry.” She quickly massaged his head “Is that better?”
“Get a room.” Doug groaned.
Erin walked through the kitchen door and found the three mumbling to themselves “Why look, it’s the three stooges.”
“Erin!” Jenna greeted excitedly “You look so beautiful today. Is your skin looking younger or is it just me?”
Doug tilted his head, a hand on his chin as he watched Erin pour a glass of milk “I think its just you.” His comment quickly earned a punch in the stomach from Jenna “Are you PMS’ing? What’s with the violence?”
“I’m on to your little plan.” Erin laughed when she saw their jaws drop “Thinking that you could have Uncle Chuck ask me to return to the team that I would return? Nice try guys…but he told me about the release forms. I’m going to go sign them later.”
Jenna sighed internally “Yeah…we had to try one last time.” She glanced at her watch “Wow, look at the time. We’re late for our weekly meeting.” She winked at the guys.
“See you guys later.” Erin waved casually. After eating breakfast and cleaning up, she was ready to head downtown to P.R.A. Headquarters. She was searched at the door but one security guard recognized her and allowed her to enter without further notice.
Devin was in the middle of explaining a mission when the glass door opened and appeared the receptionist “Mr. Hsu, sorry to interrupt your meeting. But Miss Yeung is here to see you.”
“Let her in, Mrs. Chu.” Devin nodded. Arms crossed as he greeted Erin with a tilted smile “Hi Erin, you still remember the team don’t you?” he pointed around the table while the group nodded awkwardly.
“Of course. Where are the forms so I can sign it and get out of your hair.” She said sternly. Being in the room with him only reminded her of why she wanted to leave.
“What forms?” he shook his head.
“The forms that…” Erin faded her words when she noticed Ryan hiding his face “Nevermind.” She turned her heels to leave when Mia jumped up and blocked her with widened arms.
“Doug, lock the door!” she commanded, “Erin, forgive me, but you can’t leave.”
Reina and Matt turned to each other “What’s going on guys?” Matt asked.
“Some things that should have been taken care of months ago.” Mia answered shortly.
“Uncle Devin.” Jenna nodded as she handed him a cup of tea that she poured.
“He’s NOT going to do it.” Erin rolled her eyes.
“Do what?” Reina asked.
Devin sighed as he took the cup from Jenna’s hand “There goes dignity.” He stepped over to Erin, whose face was wrinkling with each step. His eyes stared at every inch of her face before he slowly knelt down with one knee and placing the other one down gently. His eyes never leaving hers as he said the words “Erin, I’m sorry for being such a jerk. You are a great agent and it is the team’s loss that you decided to leave. But it would be our honor if you would return.”
She was in utter shock, never believing that he could pushed aside his macho attitude and lower himself to apologize on bended knees. Erin felt a wave of emotions come over her, she was embarrassed, regretful and sympathetic “I…I had no idea you wanted me back this much.” Bowing over, she pulled him up by the arm “For months I wished I had not left the team either…but I couldn’t pushed aside my own dignity to admit that. I’m sorry for being so tough on you and I take back all the bad things I’ve said about you.”
“Yes!” Mia cried happily as she began doing her victory dance causing the group to burst into laughter “Loser!!” she finished with a fingers pointing at Devin.
Erin frowned as she turned from Mia to Devin’s smiling face “You two had a bet?”
Mia straightened herself “Yes, but don’t worry, I won.” She nodded.
“Good for you.” Erin said sarcastically “So what was it?”
Darren stood up to help his wife “It doesn’t matter Erin. The important thing is that you two are able to move pass the past and now our team is once again completed.”
Erin eventually nodded “Fine.” She walked to the next open seat and sat down.
Devin was about to return to his seat when Mia cleared her throat loudly “I believe I won.” She said mischievously.
He nodded “Okay. Mia will be head for the day. Treat her like how you would treat me.” Devin took Mia’s seat while she skipped her way to the front.
"Hi Uncle Mia." Jenna laughed at her own joke.
Mia raised her brow "I like th sound of that and I love this chair.” She giggled while the group looked at her ready to take orders “What are you guys staring at? Oh, right!” she quickly clicked on her notebook “The mission today is in the subway—”
“Which one?” Jenna raised her hand and interrupted.
“We have more than one?” Mia scratched her head.
“The one that goes to Tsim Sa Tsui.” Erin pointed out.
“Right.” Mia nodded “We are going to split up and look for the people with the tattoos, beat them until their unconscious and take them back to the police for questioning.” She finished with a proud smile “There, I did it.” The group remained still “Well?”
“Who is going where?” Ryan asked.
Matt quickly chimed in “Where is our contact van going to park?”
“Yeah, and what are we going to do about the people?” Reina added as she played along.
“And you didn’t order us to leave yet.” Doug covered a yawn “Our head sucks!”
“Stop it with the questions!” Mia covered her ears “This job is stupid! I can’t do it.” Getting up as she stood over Devin “You can have it back.” He laughed while shaking his head and nodding to Matt to take over, who did it with ease.
