Chapter 6

"lost.love.

"Hello? Jie Lun? Are you free tonight?"

"Yeah. Erm... Why?"

"Nothing... I just feel like going to the railway station..."

"The railway? Oh. Okay."

"Really. Okay then. Bye..."

"Bye Lin."

Lun frowned. Lin sounded a little sad over the phone. In fact, she sounded like she had just cried. Lun started worrying about Lin. He couldn't wait for tonight to come.

------------------------------------------------------------

Lun looked at his watch. He was early. Lin probably wasn't there yet, so Lun chose a pillar and leaned against it to wait for Lin. Lun looked around as he waited. But someone sitting on the stairs facing the tracks caught his attention. Lin? She was already there?

The girl sat with her head down as Lun approached.

"Lin...? Is that you?" Lun asked as he descended the stairs.

The girl turned for a brief moment to look at him.

"Lin?" Lun asked as he sat down beside her. "Lin? Are you okay? What's wrong?"

Lin took one look at Lun and fell into his arms with tears streaming out of her eyes.

"Hush, girl. Calm down... Don't cry..." Lun said, almost in a whisper. He hugged her close and stroked her head. "Don' cry, Lin, I'm here..."

There were more than a thousand thoughts floating around in Lun's mind. But, most importantly, he wanted to know what happened to Lin.

"What happened to you, Lin? What happened?" Lun asked, barely above a whisper now. He hated to see Lin like that. He hated when she felt sad. He hated it when she was in pain. When Lin cried, he felt like crying too. He couldn't bear to see her like that.

"You'll never understand, Lun..." Lin stuttered to get the words out.

"I will, Lin. I will if you tell me... I... I can share your pain with you..." Lun tried to keep his tears at bay but he couldn't stop one from from falling down his cheeks.

"But... It's no use. You'll never understand..." Lin said, thinking: "Sorry Lun. But even if you understand, it'll be too late... I'm really sorry Lun."

"But Lin..." Lun started, but he didn't know what to say anymore.

As the two sat on the steps, Lin's sobbing echoed in the silence. To Lun, silence was nothing to him. But Lin's sobbing, it was totally unbearable. It was pain to his ears, pain to his mind, pain to his heart... It was just pure agony.

"Don't cry Lin, I'm sorry. Sorry for not being able to understand... Sorry Lin..." Another drop of tear rolled down his cheeks and splattered on the hard concrete. "Maybe... Maybe I'm not fit to be your boyfriend... Everytime I need help you're here for me... But now... I can't even help you..."

"It's not your fault, Lun. Really..." Lin wiped off Lun's tears. "Don't cry for me... It's not worth it..."

Lun grabbed her hand from his face. "How can you say that, Lin? After so many years, how can you say that?" Lun paused. He dropped Lin's hand and looked away from her. "Unless... Unless you don't love me anymore..."

"Lun! You know that's not true!" Lin gasped, looking at him in horror. "It's just that..." her voice drifted off.

"What? Just that what?" Lun asked, anxious to know.

"Lun... I..." she paused, looking for the words to say.

"Forget it Lin. Since you don't want to tell me... I... I don't need to know..." Lun said, looking into Lin's big, soulful eyes. Her eyes showed fear. Not of him, but of whatever that was happening to her. "Lin... Don't be afraid... I'm here. And I'll be here for you, always..."

"But I won't be." Lin thought. "Lun... Can you promise me something?" she asked.

"Yeah. Sure, girl."

"Promise me, that you'll be happy..."

"Huh? But-"

"Don't ask me why, just promise me. Say you'll be happy."

"Okay. I promise. I promise I'll be happy, Lin..."

"Okay." Lin said, a little smile appearing at the edges of her lips. Then she looked up. She could hear the train approaching. Slowly, Lin stood up.

"What's the matter?" Lun asked, standing up too.

"Nothing." Lin said. "Just remember your promise to me..." she placed her hands on Lun's shoulders, tip-toed slightly and kissed Lun lightly on his lips. Then the next moment, she dashed out into the path of the train.

"Lin!" Lun shouted and ran after her in an attempt to get her back.

But it was too late. The train couldn't stop in time and the impact threw the both of them several meters away. Lin hit her head on the tracks and passed out immediately. Lun tried to break his fall with his arms but a sickening crunch in his left arm made him realize that he had just broken his arm. Unable to withstand the pain, both physically and psychologically, Lun blacked out.

------------------------------------------------------------

Lun awoke with a jolt. The first person he saw was Xuan.

"Jia Xuan? Where... Where am I?"

"Jie Lun! You've finally woken up! You're at the hospital..."

"The hospital?" Lun wondered aloud. "Lin! Where's Lin?" he exclaimed, suddenly sitting upright.

"Lin's at the ICU. Come on, I'll bring you there."

Slowly and carefully, Lun descended the bed. His left arm was in a cast. He winced in pain as he tried to lift it.

"Don't move it!" Xuan suddenly said. Lun almost jumped in his shock. "Doc says you can't move it till the cast's taken off."

"Oh. Okay." Lun said as he followed Xuan.

------------------------------------------------------------

"There... She's inside."

As Lun entered the ward, Xuan's tears came flowing out like a running tap. All the tears she had kept inside while facing Lun came out in a rush.

"Miss Ren, we have tried out best. Say your last words to Miss Tsai..." the doctor had said.

Xuan was crying so much she collapsed in a heap on the floor next to the door. Why? Why must Lin die? Lin was one of the best friends she could ever have... Why must she leave her?

------------------------------------------------------------

In the ICU ward, Lin spent the last moments of her life with Lun.

"Lin? Why? Why are you doing this to me? Lin..." Lun bit his lips to stop himself from crying. Tears welled up in his reddened eyes.

"I'm sorry, Lun... But... After... After I go, you... You must... Take care of Jia Xuan... She... She's too vulnerable... To the outside world..."

Lun nodded profusely, his face streaked with tears. "I will..."

"One more thing, Lun... Remember your promise to me..." Lin paused for a while, then continued, "And if you really want to know what happened... It's all written in my diary... But you must first find the key... It's hidden... In the tracks..."

"And..." Lin breathed, "Lun... Wo hui yong yuan ai ni... Ni yi ding yao ji zhu, ni dui wo de nuo yan... Hao ma?" (translate: Lun... I will love you forever... You must remember your promise to me, okay?)

"Hao... Wo hui de... Lin, wo ye hui yong yuan ai ni de..." (translate: Okay... I will... Lin, I will also love you forever...)

After Lun finished speaking, Lin smiled weakly and closed her eyes. The next thing Lun knew, was that the cardiac monitor started to give a continuous beep and the screen showed that Lin's heartbeat was down to zero.

Lun stood up so fast that the chair gave a loud screech and fell to the floor. "Lin! Lin! Lin... ..." Lun used his good hand to hold Lin up into his arms. This time, he didn't try to stop his tears.

Xuan, who heard the noise from outside, immediately stood up and ran into the ward. "Lin?"

Still crying uncontrollably, Lun slowly raised his head to look at Xuan. Just one look at Lun's face told Xuan what had happened.

------------------------------------------------------------

As Lun and Xuan waited outside, the doctor soon came out, shaking his head. "I'm sorry. You'll have to get ready for her funeral..."

By this time, Xuan was crying so hard that she couldn't stand on her own anymore. She fell into Lun's strong arms. Because, without Zhe, this was the best support she could get...
