Chapter 1

Heaven

Phase 1 – the warning

“You know I hate it whenever you do this right?” Kwon Jiyong spoke agitatedly as he glared at the tall figure standing in front of him. He leaned back into his chair as he crossed his arms, looking at her with a cocked eyebrow. He began tapping his foot rapidly on the floor, waiting for her to explain.

“Jiyong I’m sorry, but can’t you understand? We just got back together, what do you expect me to do?” Kim Yoobin tried to plead as she dropped her oversized purse onto the small café table.

Jiyong simply shifted his eyes at the table to see the coffee he had previously ordered swayed in the cups. Yoobin roughly pulled the chair across from Jiyong and plop down.

“I expected you to meet me here by yourself and on time, but you showed up an hour late along with someone I don’t like, WHO I expected YOU to break up with for good. Don’t you think you cried enough for him yet? How many more times are you going to put yourself in that position?” Jiyong tried his best in keeping his voice low, which was incredibly hard considering that he doesn’t have an inside voice.

“Yah!” Yoobin gritted through her teeth and kicked Jiyong hard on the shin. Jiyong winced and quickly rubbed it to ease the pain. He shot Yoobin a glare as he cursed under his breath.

“Do you have to talk so loud? He’s in the restroom in case you forgot and I don’t see why you dislike him so much. He never did anything wrong to you.” Yoobin suppressed her angry voice so that she wouldn’t cause a scene in the small cozy café.

“Correction, I don’t dislike him. I hate him, with a passion.” Jiyong turned his head and looked out the clear glass window.

“You’re so stupid.” Yoobin mumbled under her breath as she recalled why Jiyong didn’t like Seunghyun.

“I’M NOT STUPID!” Jiyong shouted frantically after he quickly whipped his head back to Yoobin. “Tell me, who the hell steps on other people’s shoes?! I’ll tell you who! Your precious Seunghyun!”

Yoobin immediately sank in her seat in embarrassment and moved her hand up to cover half of her face. She turned her head to look out the clear glass window to avoid the awkward stares from the near bystanders.

“Do you know how hard it was for me to get those SB dunks? Jiyong continued on with his rant. “I had to camp out on the cold streets of San Francisco for two days! I only got to wear those babies once and that fool stepped on it! My babies are now crying because they have ugly creases on them! I can’t even wear them anymore! They’re ruined!”

“Jiyong stop exaggerating so much!” Yoobin finally burst. “It’s only shoes! Nobody cares if they have creases or not!”

Jiyong stared at Yoobin in disbelief. “Tiffany and Aubrey are not just shoes. They are my babies.” Jiyong responded with the most serious tone he had ever used.

“You named them?” Yoobin looked at Jiyong incredulously and slapped herself on the forehead. “I can’t believe I’m best friends with this crazy guy.” She mumbled to herself. “If that’s the only reason why you hate him, then you seriously need to check yourself into a mental institution.” Yoobin told Jiyong before shaking her head and rolling her eyes.

“No, that is NOT the only reason why I hate him! You think I like seeing you whenever you two break up? Well I don’t! It scares the crap out of me because I never know what to do. I talk to you and you cry, I touch you and you cry, I comfort you and you still cry! What the hell am I suppose to do?! Please! Do us both a favor and just break up with that fool for good already!” Jiyong threw his hands up in despair for extra emphasis.

Yoobin’s face suddenly fell sullen. Just then, Jiyong notice Seunghyun coming out of the restroom and making his way towards them.

“I see your boyfriend just finish taking a long poop so I’m going to bounce before he comes over here.” Jiyong got up from his seat and pushed his chair in. “If you still want to hang out later call me, but you better not bring that fool or else I’m never talking you again.” Jiyong scowled at Seunghyun before turning to leave the small café.

Seunghyun made his way over to Yoobin and sat in the seat Jiyong was just sitting awhile ago. He saw Yoobin’s expression and looked at her sympathetically. “What’s wrong? You look down.”

Yoobin looked up at Seunghyun and faked a smile. “Nothing, I was just thinking about something.”

Phase 2 – the life we dream of

“Do you ever dream about living your life differently?” Yoobin asked as she sat next to Jiyong on the couch with a bowl of popcorn.

“Of course, I fantasize about it everyday.” Jiyong responded as he placed his feet on her coffee table and slouched into a comfortable position.

“What do you dream about?” Yoobin looked over to Jiyong in curiosity.

“Becoming a big rapper, producer, and composer in South Korea, but that’ll never happen.”

“How would you know without trying?” Yoobin asked.

Jiyong shrugged his shoulders and dismissed the idea. “What about you? Do you ever wish your life was different?” He grabbed a handful of popcorn and stuffed it into his mouth.

“Yeah, I wish I would actually find someone who cares about me.” Yoobin lowered her head and thought about how all the bad times she had with Seunghyun outweigh their good times.

“If you would-“

“But I’m at a comfortable relationship right now.” Yoobin interrupted Jiyong before he could rant about Seunghyun again. “It’s not that I’m not happy, I just think it would be better if he cared about me more and not argue so much you know?”

“Yeah, I feel you.” Jiyong nodded his head to agree. ”It would be great to find someone you love and live with them while living your dream. It’ll be like living in heaven, with the perfect angel.”

Yoobin couldn’t help but smile. “Living in heaven with the perfect angel, I like that. It’s cute.”

“I know huh?” Jiyong smiled smugly to himself.

All of a sudden, Yoobin’s doorbell rang. Jiyong’s face suddenly fell sullen.

“You invited him over didn’t you?” Jiyong asked suspiciously.

“Jiyong please don’t be mad. He’s really trying to be friends with you. Why can’t you just forget about him stepping on your shoes and be friends with him?” Yoobin pleaded.

“Yoobin, you just don’t understand okay! He and I can never be friends!” Jiyong raised his voice and stood up.

“Why not?! Are you that immature?” Yoobin got up as well.

Seunghyun heard the commotion from the other side of the door and rang the doorbell again. Yoobin threw her hands up in frustration and walked over to the door.

“You let him in and I’m seriously not going to talk to you anymore. It’s either him or me.” Jiyong warned.

Yoobin ignored him and open the door to let Seunghyun in her apartment. Seunghyun slowly went in and awkwardly motioned his hand to say hi, but Jiyong grabbed his jacket and walked past them. Yoobin let out a sigh of frustration and slam the door behind him.

Phase 3 – heaven

“The number you have dialed is currently unavailable. If you like to leave a message-“

“Ugh!” Yoobin shut her phone and placed it on the small café table. “He hasn’t called me in two weeks and he’s not living at his apartment. What the hell is wrong with him? How can he move without telling me? Can he be so stupid and actually break off our friendship over someone who stepped on his shoes?! God, why are boys so stupid?!” Yoobin complained to her younger brother Seungri.

“Hey, not all boys are stupid okay, just the ones you know. And how are you so sure he moved?” Seungri asked as he brought his cup of espresso to his lips.

“I asked his landlord and he told me he moved a couple of days after our stupid argument about that jerk.” Yoobin responded.

“Ouch. I take it that you and Seunghyun broke up again?” Seungri asked even though he already knew the answer.

“…Yeah. Ugh! I’m so stupid, Jiyong was right all along. I should’ve broken up with Seunghyun for good last time.” Yoobin shook her head in disappointment.

“Yeah you are stupid.” Seungri responded nonchalantly. “You chose some jerk over the guy you had a crush on for how many years?” Seungri inquired.

“You don’t know how hard it is to break up with Seunghyun.”

“Yet, how many times did you two actually break up?” Seungri stroke his nonexistent beard and looked off into the distant.

“That’s not the point. Since I’ve been with him, Jiyong cared for me more than ever. Every time Seunghyun and I broke up, Jiyong was always there even though he didn’t do much to help me get through the break up. I think being with Seunghyun was the only way I was able to get Jiyong to actually care for me.”

“And I kept telling you that’s not the way to get a guy to care for you. See what happens when you don’t listen to people’s advice? You get your heart broken in two ways.”

“You’re not making me feel any better, I’m leaving.” Yoobin gathered her things and got up. “Thanks for the coffee and making me feel worse.” Yoobin said sarcastically.

“Anytime.” Seungri smiled smugly. “Bye.” Seungri waved his fingers.

While walking to the entrance of her gloomy apartment complex, Yoobin saw several envelopes sticking out of the small opening her small mailbox. She took out her key, opened it and gathered all of her mail. She closed the box and headed to her apartment while flipping through her stack of mail. As she got into her apartment, she paused when she noticed a familiar handwriting on one of the envelopes. Without thinking, she dropped the other envelopes on the floor and hurriedly opened the one with the familiar handwriting.

Dear Yoobin,

If you’re wondering where I’ve been, I moved to South Korea to pursue my dream. I was going to tell you that I had a job offering at a big music company, but I never got the chance to. I’ve been working on the mixer and came up with some pretty sick beats, I even started to write some lyrics to it. I’ll send it to you when I’m done with it. Life here is pretty amazing, but I thought I would be a lot happier here. So far, I’ve been feeling pretty empty inside. I guess this isn’t the heaven I had anticipated, but maybe that’s because my angel hasn’t arrived yet.
By the way, I’m sorry for storming out of your place that day. You asked me why I couldn’t be friends with that fool and it’s because he’s not worthy of my friendship. To tell you the truth, he’s not worthy of you either. He broke your heart more than you or I could ever fix it. I don’t think he deserved you and I most definitely don’t think you deserve to go through what he always put you through. And let’s not forget that he creased my babies (and yes, I am serious about this).
Anyways, I really don’t want to say this in a letter, but I feel like I have no other choice. Before I left, you told me that you dreamed of having a guy that cared for you. I don’t know if you were oblivious or not, but I had always been there for you. Especially during all those times you scared the crap out of me by crying like the big fat baby you are, I was there. If that still didn’t go through that thick head of yours, then I hope this will. You are the perfect angel I want to be with in heaven. In other words: I like you dummy.

- Jiyong

A faint smile appeared on Yoobin’s face as she finished reading the letter. Without hesitation, she started packing her bags for the heaven that awaits her.
