I waited patiently for Hebe to get dressed. A few minutes later, she appeared right in front of my eyes wearing the most elegant dress I bought for her on our way home just now. Her figure almost with perfect curves was fitted in that knee-length purple dress showing off her small waist but not low enough to show cleavage.
“You look gorgeous.”
“Thanks again for the dress.”
I took a breath. “Do you want to go there now?”
“Yes, I’m ready to go now.”
As she climbed into the passenger seat, I called Jason to inform him that Hebe wouldn’t be going to his sister’s house tonight. In response, Jason told me that he would be going to Kaohsiung early tomorrow morning to attend his friend’s wedding and would be back in two days later. For tonight, he would be staying a night at his sister’s house.
Stopped at a traffic light, I noticed her discomfort as I glanced over at her.
“Are you cold?” I asked after seeing she rubbed her palm.
“Yes.” Her voice was shaky.
“Are you nervous?’
She glanced up uneasily. “I don’t know. This is not something we can forget today and pretend nothing happen the following day. But since we’ve come this far, I’m willing to give him a second chance.”
I smiled bitterly. “Don’t worry, I’m sure he is regretting now.”
I parked outside the restaurant. I noticed Hebe was staring deep at the wedding ring on her finger of her left hand. When I touched her arm, she gasped and her eyes widened up with fear. She quickly wiped away her tears and faked a smile at me.
“Have we arrived?”
“Yes. Are you okay?”
“Do you think I look awful?”
“No, I would say you look beautiful. It’s true Hebe, you really look beautiful tonight.”
She blushed and looked away.
“Aaron, I think I better go in now…”
She was just going to open the car door when I pulled her back for the one last hug although on my mind I hoped we could be in each other’s arms forever.
“You know where to find me if you need me.” I said as I gave her a peck on her forehead.
She nodded and went out from my car. My heart was in pain to see her disappeared behind the entrance of the restaurant when I couldn’t change the truth that she was someone’s wife.
I started to miss her for not being beside me. My heart was in agony when I knew I wouldn’t be able to embrace or kiss her again. “Hebe, I miss you too much to believe you’re just a friend,” I spoke for myself with a reluctant feeling of watching someone I loved flew away from me again. All that happened between us was a mistake. Although I wished she could accept my love someday, which seemed impossible when her heart was belonged only to Chun. I had to forget it soon or I would be end up banging my head on the wall.
I didn’t leave the place. I was silently waiting for her inside my car across the street after grabbing some food and food and drink from the nearby convenient store. I didn’t care what kind of conclusion Hebe would make, her safety and feelings were something I knew I needed to protect. She might look tough from outside but I knew inside of her was so fragile. I couldn’t let her to be alone without knowing she would be safe with Chun, although I supposed Hebe would be better off without him after what he had done to her.

Chun’s POV
After sending Ella back to her apartment, I drove back to my house and took a quick shower. Everything in the house somehow made feel bad. Visions of Hebe and those times we shared together in these five years came to mind. I knew there was no way I could wash away my guilt after what I did, but that was the consequence of the choice I had made.
I called up the restaurant again to double confirm everything. I had booked the whole restaurant for tonight. I was trying hard to think of what I should say to her when we meet. After struggling for so long to hide my underground relationship with Ella, finally it was the time for me to divulge everything to Hebe. I had to tell her the truth that I had always felt attracted to Ella ever since our kiss incident two years ago and now separation was the best solutions for both of us.
As a matter of fact, tonight would be our last dinner together as couple and although I hoped we could still be friends, perhaps it was just my sarcastic thinking. I knew Hebe wouldn’t forgive me but at this point, friendship was all I could offer her now.
I couldn’t imagine of what would be her reaction when I mentioned the divorce news to her. I had asked the law firm to prepare the divorce paper but I didn’t know how to explain everything to her without hurting her deeper. I had hurt her more than enough. I didn’t want to add on her torment anymore. I was so nervous and simultaneously my heart was aching too.

Ella’s POV
My curiosity was getting bigger now as we were getting off at the school compound. I heard some loud noises came from the other side of the building.
“Hey, why we are here? I hope this is a good surprise.”
“Of course, come faster.”
I followed him and when we arrived outside the door of the school hall, I was shocked to see many people inside were having their buffet style dinner.
“What is going on, Jiro? Why there are so many people here?”
“This is a birthday party.”
“Whose birthday party is it?”
“You will know her soon.” He said while scanning his eyes around the room. “Come, I want you to meet her and she’s right over there.” He escorted me there as I smiled at everyone who we passed by.
We walked to the group of people chatting among themselves. In the middle, there stood a simple fair beautiful lady with the gorgeous smile that able to capture any men’s heart in this room.
“Jiro…” she cried out as he gathered her in his embrace and gave her a peck on lips.
“Errr…you two are together?” I asked innocently.
“Oh, I’m sorry that I forget to introduce. This is Genie, my girlfriend.”
“Hi, I’m Ella, nice to meet you. You’re the birthday girl, right? Happy Birthday, Genie.”
“Thank you Ella, nice to meet you too.”
“I’m sorry that I didn’t bring any birthday gift for you. And you Jiro, you should have told me earlier.”
“It’s alright Ella, I told him not to tell you as we wanted it to be a surprise for you.”
“Oh, but next time lunch would be my treat, okay?”
“Okay.”
“Erm, may I excuse myself to washroom? See you girls later.”
“Yeah, I’ll be taking care of Ella.”
Genie brought me over to the dining table and introduced me to some of her friends. Later she helped me grabbed a few plates of food and then we sat down at one of the empty table to eat and resumed our conversation.
“So, how did you get the permission to throw a birthday party here?”
“Well, both of us were the ex-students here and Jiro begged the headmistress to let him use this hall as he wanted to invite all of the former schoolmates that we known to attend this special reunion and also to take this opportunity to announce to everyone that we are a couple now.”
“That was so sweet of him. Well, Genie, may I ask how the two of you end up together? I’m sorry if I’m too straight forward. Erm…did he tell you…errr…never mind, forget what I said.”
“That you were his ex?”
Her reply caught me off guard. I was shocked that she already knew it.
“Don’t worry, he mentioned to me before although I didn’t exactly know in details the reason behind your break up with him. About us, actually we were childhood friends. I left him many years ago to follow my parents to America, and we never met again until fate brought us back together recently.”
“You and him were childhood sweethearts? He never told me before about you when we were still together but now I’m happy for him that he has found you back.”
“No, we never got into that level yet before I left him. But honestly we were having those special feelings between us, just that in all these years, we never really told each other our real feelings and just remained best friends. So Ella, can I ask why you cancel the wedding?”
“I was in love with someone else.”
“What does that mean?”
I told her about what was happened between us. I didn’t feel like hiding something from her as I wanted to make everything clear that Jiro and I were over. There is only friendship between us now.
“Jiro is a nice guy. Don’t ever let him go again.”
She smiled and nodded timidly, “Yeah, and thanks for being so honest with me. Are we consider as friends now?”
“Yeah, why not.” I exclaimed as a smile crossed her face. We shook hands and exchanged contact details later on.
Suddenly Jiro appeared on the stage with a microphone and told everyone to gather around the middle part of the hall as the birthday cake cutting session would be begin shortly. Everyone crowded around, preparing to sing the birthday song including me.
Soon, the light was off and Jiro came out with a three tier birthday cake with layers of whipped cream and chocolate chips. All of us sang a birthday song to Genie. She made her birthday wish and then blew all the candles. It was a brilliant birthday party after all.

Hebe’s POV
I was freaking nervous when I stepped into the restaurant. The whole restaurant was so empty, which was not possible to happen because this was the best place in town for dinner. My eyes were searching for the sign of Chun. A waiter in his mid-twenty approached and spoke to me.
“Are you Mrs Wu?”
“Yes, I am.”
“This way, please follow me.”
I followed him up the winding staircase. After hitting the last step of the staircase, eventually I spotted him sitting at the middle table decorated with candle lights and a bottle of red wine on top of it. He raised his head and showed his usual charming smile, the smile that reminded of our first date.
“Hi, I’m glad you come.”
“Errr yeah…” I didn’t know what to say to him after I learned the truth about them. Although I wanted to forgive him as much as to be in his embrace again, I was holding back because of some feeling I was unsure.
I avoided his eyes. After I sat down, the table was occupied with all my favourite dishes. I was happy that Chun still remembered something about me. My first instinct was telling me that it was still not too late to save our marriage, but what could I do now? I was so confused and lost for words.
There was more silence currently building up its wall between us until he decided to warm up the atmosphere.
“Hebe, why don’t we forget everything now? I really want you to enjoy the dinner with me.”
I nodded reluctantly, “Okay.”
We had our dinner in silence. After eating, he brought me to the place where we could talk without any disturbance.
Fifteen minutes later, finally we arrived at Lover Bridge in Danshui. It looked so peaceful at night. There were a few couples who were enjoying their time together by walking along the long bridge and at the same time looking at night scenery around the Danshui River. Like others, it was just like the old days for us except he wasn’t holding my hand anymore when we walked.
“Hebe,” he said softly.
“Huh?” I continued to stare at him and was expecting a good explanation from him.
“I need you to stay calm after hearing this.”
“Why?”
“Hebe, we can’t continue this anymore.” He swallowed. “I’m sorry that our marriage didn’t work out and………we should get a divorce.”
“What do you mean divorce? What are you talking about?”
“I’m sorry. My lawyer is in the process of preparing the divorce paper. He will give you a call when it’s ready.”
Tears formed in my eyes, wishing I could end my life and go to a place where there was no pain. I hated myself for letting him see me cried.
“What have I done wrong? Why Chun? You’re heartless!!! How could you do this to me??? I’m your wife, you don’t love me anymore???”
“I know there is nothing I can say now that will make things better. But please don’t hate Ella. I’m the one who started everything. I know what we did was wrong but there comes a time I suppose, when we failed to control our feeling for each other anymore. What I’m doing now is the best way to solve this problem.”
“Did you sleep with her?”
There was a long silence. I couldn’t control my anger anymore. “Answer me dammit!!!” I screamed angrily at him.
“I’m sorry.”
I slapped him hard on his face. “Wu Chun, I hate you!!!”

Jiro’s POV
I was happy that Ella agreed to come with me for dinner, although I didn’t tell her that actually we were going to Genie’s birthday party. Initially, I thought she would feel uncomfortable when I introduced her to Genie, but it turned out that they did get along pretty well.
After our break-up, I found out that we were more suitable to be friends than lovers. She was never that bubbly when we were still together and it was like she had been free from some sort of unspoken secret that she was trying to hide for a long time. It was so true. I did feel it.
We arrived at her apartment. After getting out from my car, I told Genie to wait for me inside the car. After checking that Genie had locked the car from inside for safety purpose, I sent Ella until the doorstep of her apartment.
“Jiro, thanks for tonight. Genie is a nice lady. You must remember to cherish her, okay.”
“I will…Ella, take care of yourself, okay.”
“Thanks Jiro, I will…and both of you please take care too.”
“We will…Goodnight Ella.”
“Goodnight Jiro.”

Aaron’s POV
After I saw Hebe came out from the restaurant with Chun and went into his car, I knew my mission to protect her secretly was totally over. Instead of going home straight away, I went to the pub and had a few glasses of beers.
As I pulled over to the side of the car porch, I saw a familiar girl sitting in front of my house door with her arms hugging both her knees. She looked like Hebe, or was it really her? I walked up to the door and kneeled down beside her.
“Hebe? What happened?”
She was still remained silent.
“Please tell me,” I whispered as I gripped on her shoulder.
All of a sudden, she cried into my embrace and I held her tight on her waist.
“Aaron, don’t say anything. Please drink with me.”
“Okay, as long as it can make you feel better.”
We went inside with a bag of Heineken cans and I sat down on the couch next to her. Soon, there were dozens of empty beer cans spotted around the floor.
“Hey …*hiccups*…where are you going?…*hiccups*…”
“I’m going to bed, I can’t drink anymore…*hiccups*…” I felt my head spinning as I stood up from the couch.
“…*hiccups*…wait, I want to sleep too…”
We walked together up the stairs, holding each other just incase we lost our balances. When we were standing at the corridor between our rooms, I helped her to open the door knob into the guest room.
“Goodnight Hebe…”
“Goodnight…*hiccups*…”
Without warning, she sort of lost balance as she grabbed into my arm to avoid falling behind. Our faces were only a few inches apart. The minutes passed slowly. Yet the only thing I saw in the dark was a pair of beautiful attractive eyes. Leaning closer, I kissed her on the lips. I kissed her long and deep as she sank into my arms for support.
