Chapter 21

Drop-of-Fear

Ha! Caught another one, Jessica cheered as a fish bit onto to the worm at the end of her pole.

Louis stared at Jessica like he just witnessed a miracle. When did you learn to fish like that? He would never think of her as the outdoorsy type but she sure proved him wrong today.

Me and my dad always went fishing when I was still in New York. Why? I dont look like I know how to fish? Jessica grinned as she looked at Louis.

He shook his head in amazement, Well no. I always thought you were the...

...girly type? Didnt you ever hear the saying never judge a book by its cover? Jessica retorted while throwing the fish into a pail.

Every other girl I took onto this boat never knew how to fish except for you. Louis immediately shut his big mouth once he saw the look of murder on Jessicas face. And by other girls I meant my MOM and SISTER, Louis said slowly, putting strong emphasis on the words mom and sister. He backed away towards the stern once he saw Jessica making a fist.

She raised an eyebrow and said suspiciously, That better true, or else...

Ooooh, Madame Jessica is gonna punish me, Louis teased, pretending to me scared.

Thats it, Ive had enough of you. Jessica leaped towards Louis after she finished her sentence. The boat started rocking from beneath Jessicas feet. She lost her balance and was knocked over board.

Louis could feel his sides split from laughing so hard. See I told you not stand up on the boat.

Jessicas been in the water for about thirty seconds and she still hadnt floated back up. Louis felt uneasy as the boat swayed gently in the water.

Jessica, Louis called. The only sound was the splash of leaping fishes. Jessica! Louis called again, louder this time. He waited for about ten more seconds and jumped into the water looking for her.

Louis hysterically searched around the lake for signs of Jessica while he continued to scream her name. This is the second time in his life that hes been so afraid. Just as he was about to dive beneath the surface, Jessica shot up from the under the lake with a mouthful of water. Before Louis could react, she spat the water in her mouth all over his face. The tables had turned and she was the one laughing at him.

Stop laughing! I thought you drowned, Louis screamed as he wiped water off his face. The two were still floating about in the water.

Sorry, Jessica said in between laughs, You shouldve seen the look on your face. Didnt you know I set the record for holding my breath under water in high school?

Thats not funny, Louis replied while treading water, I was afraid I was gonna lose you again.

Jessica swam closer to Louis. She placed her hands on his shoulders and replied, Youll never lose me. As the sunlight sparkled in the mid-afternoon water, the two shared an intimate and literally wet, kiss.

Ron! Michelle! Fiona yelled as she ran towards the two with Jacky.

Fi, Michelle yelled back as the two girls ran towards each other. Fiona threw her arms around Michelle once they were in reach.

Hey Fiona, Ron smiled as he pulled Jack to the girls direction. Watcha doing here?

Fiona smirked as she looked from Michelle to Ron, I should be asking you guys the same question.

Michelle blushed as she looked at Fionas suspicious smile. Ron needed help babysitting Jacky.

Ri-i-i-ght, Fiona responded, winking at Michelle, Well, Im here with my little sister Jenny, Fiona looked at Jacky and grinned. So you must be Jacky, my sister would love meet a new friend. Fiona patted Jacky on the head as he said, You can call me aunty Fiona.

Hi, aunty Fiona, Jacky said sweetly. Maybe he was only a brat towards Ron.

Come on, let aunty Michelle and Uncle Ron spend some time alone. Lets so get some ice cream. Jenny would love to meet you, Fiona grabbed Jackys hand and they both skipped merrily towards the ice cream stand, leaving Ron and Michelle standing alone together.

Finally, a break from the little monster, Ron sighed in relief as soon as Jacky was out of site.

Michelle lightly punched Rons stomach, Dont say that, hes so cute.

Only to you, Ron shot back. His eyes lit up as he said, Hey, since were standing right here, lets go on the Drop of Fear. I heard it was really fun.

Cold sweat formed on Michelles forehead as she focussed her eyes on the ride Ron was pointing towards. It was about four stories high and once it takes you to the very top, it drops you down in less than four seconds. It wasnt Michelles cup of tea. Heights was probably the one thing that made her quiver.

Youre not scared are you? Ron taunted in a high pitched voice, If you are we can go on the tea cups.

Im not scared, lets go. Peer pressure. Michelle felt nauseous even from hearing the screams coming from people on the ride. The line up was becoming shorter and shorter as Ron grabbed her arm and dragged towards the ride. Only a few more people until it was their turn.

We can back out now before its too late, Ron teased.

Michelle shook her head stubbornly, Hell no. Im no wimp.

Ok, but dont blame me when you throw up all over your new shoes. Ron smiled triumphantly.

The moment of truth has arrived. It was too late for Michelle to back out now that she was secured in the seat next to Ron. Michelle closed her eyes as the seatbelt dropped down from above her head.

Even before the ride started moving, Rons ears were deaf due to the scream coming from Michelle.

Relax, Ron reassured, Youll be fine. He grabbed onto Michelles hand and gently squeezed it. She didnt know why but the ride didnt feel so scary anymore.

Close you eyes, Alec said as he held onto Vickis hand. I have a surprise for you.

This better be good, Vicki said, closing her eyes. She couldnt stay mad at Alec, he was simply just too sweet. And if she hadnt forgave him, he would still be standing under her balcony wailing his head off. Not that he was a bad singer, but her neighbours were starting to throw vegetables at him for being so loud and annoying.

Vicki had been standing still for the past thirty seconds when she felt something lick her face. She was startled as she opened her eyes to find a light brown pug held up by Alecs arm in front of her.

Awww, it looks just like Joeys puppy, Vicki gushed as hoisted the puppy into her arms.

I knew you loved Alec, so I looked all over the place to find one that looks exactly like him, Alec beamed when he saw Vickis round eyes light up.

She gently kissed the puppys head while it continued to wiggle in her arms. Its so hard to find this breed in Hong Kong, how did you manage?

Well, through a friend of a friend, Alec said scratching his head.

Out of the blue, Alec could feel Vickis luscious lips placed upon his cheek. Alec smiled coyly and asked sheepishly, What was that for?

For being such a big fat dork. He was a dork but he was her dork, and she wouldnt have him any other way.

You know you love me, Alec said as he gave Vicki his most adorable pout. In the midst of that moment, the puppy leaped out of Vickis arm and landed on the foot Alec had hurt the night before.

Ouch, Alec winced as he grabbed onto his foot while jumping on his other leg trying to keep his balance. The puppy just stared at Alec and started barking as if it was taunting him.

What happened to your foot? Vicki asked as she stared at her dorky boyfriend trying to balance on one leg. He would never make it as a ballet dancer.

Well, uh, I kinda tripped over my dumbbells trying to chase after you last night. Alec mumbled. He wasnt exactly proud what happened.

Vicki just stared at Alec in disbelief. How could anyone he so dense? But now she understood why Alec didnt chase after her last night. Vicki tried to hide the smile that was slowly appearing at the corner of her mouth.

Dont I get at least a sympathy hug? Alec asked as he tried to wobble his way closer to her.

Vicki shook her head and placed her hands on her hips, No way Mister, we gotta go clean up that apartment of yours. She tried to keep a straight face as she stared hard at Alec.

Even though he was in pain, Alec was still able to crack a joke, Come on baby, my foot is killing me. Cant we just go make out somewhere?

You wish, Vicki cried, scooping the pug into her arms, Only if you catch us first. With that said, Vicki scrambled down the street carrying the puppy with her.

Alec stumbled as he tried to catch up to her. Wait, why would you make a dying man run? Vicki swirled around and stuck her tongue out at him.

Ouch! Alec moaned as he tripped and fell down hitting the ground.

Vicki stopped and ran to his side. Oh my gosh are you ok? Im so sorry, she said crouching down beside Alec.

Taking advantage of the golden opportunity, Alec placed a quick peck on her cheek which caught her by surprise. He wasnt so dumb after all.

Kevin chugged down his fifth shot of straight Vodka. How did he manage to mess things up so badly? He didnt understand why he turned into the green monster of jealousy last night when he saw Niki dancing with Jack. Did that mean something? Kevin loved spending time with her but he never thought it could have hidden meanings. Could it be...? Kevin rubbed his temples. He obviously had to much to drink. He was Nikis boss and hes always put his career before anything else. Kevin wasnt even sure if she liked him. Men can be so clueless.

As Kevin ordered the bartender to give him a bottle of Crown Royal, a masculine voice approached him from behind, Hey Kev. Kevin turned around to find Jack standing behind him.

Can I have a seat? Jack asked quietly.

Kevin nodded, gesturing his hand to the stool beside him. Jack had been Kevin's right hand man ever since his promotion two years ago. There was nothing he wouldnt do for Jack and he knew he could count on it to be the other way around.

I just wanna tell you sorry, Jack said as the bartender placed a bottle of Heineken in front of him.

Sorry? For what? Kevin asked as he took a shot of Crown Royal.

I know you like Niki...We were only dancing last night, Jack whispered as he studied his beer bottle. If anyone could understand Kevin, it wa Jack.

Kevin tried to swallow the bitter taste of the alcohol present in his mouth. Was Jack right? Did he like Niki?

He let out a sarcastic laugh, I dont like her, shes like my little sister. Kevin could feel his heart aching as soon as he said those words.

Dont lie to me. Weve been buddies for how long now? Jack took a sip from his beer. He was aware of Kevins feelings for Niki. If he didnt like her he never wouldnt acted the way he did last night. Niki and Kevin were two of Jacks best friends and he would sacrifice his own happiness in exchange for theirs. She loves you, man.

Kevin felt like he just awoken from a terrible nightmare. His eyes lit up as he stared at Jack, What? How do you know?

Jack raised an eyebrow, Think about it. Why would she drag me out to the dance floor and start grinding with me in front of your face? She knew it would piss you off, and she was right.

It was as if Jack had hit the rewind button inside of Kevins brain. He thought back to last night and to all the wonderful moments spent with Niki. Jack was right, Niki did like him. He was just always to blind to notice.

So what are you gonna do now? Jack asked abruptly, staring at Kevin.

Kevin shook his head, I dont know, Ive already messed everything up so bad now.

Jack sighed as he reached into his back pocket, pulling out his little silver Razor flip phone. Ill help you call her. Then the rest is up to you.

Before Kevin could react, Jack already had Niki on the other line. All Kevin could do was wait intently for what was about to be the hardest step he ever had to make. Tell Niki how he really felt.

Jack had a solemn look on his face as he snapped his cell shut.

Whats up? Kevin could feel something wasn't right. His heartbeat was shallow as he waited for Jacks reply.

Jack shook his head and faintly said, Sorry man, its too late. Shes already at the airport...
