Un-smooth Sailing...

Vicki abruptly dropped her cell phone as soon as she saw who the voice belonged. A wash of mixed emotions rippled throughout her body as she gazed upon the familiar face of someone from her past.

What are you doing here? Anger was present in Vickis loud whisper.

The man shoved his hands into his pocket while shuffling from one foot to the other. He certainly struck a person with the impression as a confident man, but at this moment, he appeared nervous and unsure. Handsome is an accurate word to describe him, but arent the handsome ones most likely to break a girls heart?

The man finally looked directly into Vickis eyes and replied hesitantly, I couldnt stop thinking about you. Ive spent a year in Africa trying to forget your face but it was impossible.

He gazed upon Vickis big, round eyes which gave off a blank stare. She didnt utter a singe word for she was completely speechless.

Please, give me another chance. I swear Ive changed, the man continued, breaking the bleak silence.

Vicki inhaled deeply as her mind became clouded with anger. A trail of ice lined her voice as she questioned, What about Ruby?

Its you I love. Please, give me a chance, Ive changed, the man pleaded.

Vicki shook head sternly, Sorry, I have a boyfriend now. And I know hes never gonna cheat on me. She reached for the diamond bracelet sitting on her desk and chucked it at him. I dont need this. Please leave my office before I call security.

Omigosh, Im so excited were gonna be working on the same case, Niki beamed as she sat down in the empty seat next to Michelle. The two squads were attending a meeting to discuss the details of their next mission. Michelle smiled at her little sister and nodded.

You think being body guards for a bunch of uptight, rich people is exciting? On the street taking down gangsters is the real shit...Girls are such chicken. Ron butted in, shaking his big, swollen head. He sat in the seat in front of Michelle next to Bosco. Ron never seems to never know when to keep his mouth shut and mind his own business. She was right, Ron is a moron. Just blame his large male ego and his nosy demeanor.

Shut up, butthole. Every mission is important. Everyone needs our protection, especially people of such high caliber, Michelle fumed, and its not like you took down any real gangs. Psht...you think youre da man just because you took down one measly guy. What a joke.

Ron glared at Michelle and shot back, Are you calling me a joke? I dont see you taking down anyone.

Michelle rolled up her sleeves and stood up from her seat, bellowing,Oh ya? Ill take you down right now. No one insults her and gets away with it.

All the eyes in the room, was fixed upon Michelle and Ron. They cant help it if theyre both hard headed. Neither one would ever back down. Michelle was now one hundred percent convinced Ron didnt have feelings for her. Boy, was she ever wrong. He just had an odd way of professing his true colours-in front of other people anyway. If they were alone, she can count on him to be a sweetie. But you know guys in front of their friends, they turn into complete doorknobs.

Quiet! Joyce snapped as she suddenly walked into the room along with Kevin, Ill suspend you both if this continues.

Sorry, Madame! Michelle and Ron said unison. Before they sat back down in their seats, Michelle gave Ron one last deadly glare.

Louis tip-toed towards Jessica, who had her back towards him.

Unexpectedly, she felt a pair of hands covering her eyes and a husky voice gargling, Guess who?

What took you so long? Jessica questioned suspiciously, removing Louiss hands away from her eyes.

Louis smiled as he pulled out a chair then plopping down restlessly. Pretending to wipe sweat off his forehead, Louis protested, You know how many people I had to dodge in order to get here? It was hard work getting here without being seen.

Jessica furrowed her eyebrows together and retorted, Are you saying dating me is hard work?

No, no baby. I was just saying...

Before Louis could finish his sentence, the waiter approached the couple and asked politely, Can I get you something to drink, sir?

Saved by the waiter.
---
All morning I was looking forward to lunchtime, Louis said, as he gobbled down his steak.

Were you that hungry? Jessica shook her head. She had a pig for a boyfriend.

Louis took a sip of his water and exclaimed, No, silly. I wanted to see you.

She couldnt help but smirk at that corny comment. Nice try. But I dont fall for sweet talks. Jessica stopped and suddenly remembered she had something she wanted to ask him. Are you busy tonight?

Louis shoved a piece of beef in his mouth and asked, Not really. Why? A devilish grin began to curve on his lips as he chuckled, Oh, you wanna come to my house and we can...

Understanding what Louis has hinting, Jessica raised an arm slapping him lightly across the face, NO, sicko. I just wanted you to come to my yoga class with me.

The piece of meat in Louiss esophagus almost went back up as soon as Jessica mentioned the word Yoga.

Yoga? You must be kidding, babe. Not in a million years. Im a guy, Louis reminded, pointing to his nose.

Lots of guys do it, Jessica whined, you made me play golf with you, now you have to do yoga with me.

Louis took another sip of his water and asserted, Babe, anyone can play golf. But only fruity men do yoga. Besides, you know Im not the most flexible guy in the world.

Fine be that way! Jessica proclaimed, angrily. Louis was almost as stubborn as she was. He smiled to himself as he kept on eating, while Jessica furiously cut up her steak, pretending she was slicing up Louis.

This is Charmaine Sheh, daughter of the Japanese diplomat, actually, adopted daughter. She kept the last name of her biological father, Kevin explained placing his pointer towards the picture on the screen, projected from the slide. No doubt this girl was the attractive type.

Niki leaned over towards Michelle and whispered, Lucky girl. Not everyone gets adopted into a rich family.

Michelle arched an eyebrow and confided, teasingly, Maybe YOU are adopted, just not by a rich family. Niki gave Michelle a playful punch in the arm, disrupting Kevins presentation.

Do you ladies have something youd like to share with all of us? Kevin asked in an impatient tone. Although Niki was his girlfriend, he needed to separate work from his personal life. Professionalism.

Sorry, Sir, Michelle replied, as Ron smirked discretely.

Niki just stared at Kevin in disbelief and sneered to herself, How dare he yell at me. Hes sooo gonna get it tonight.

Michelles sudden nudge jolted Niki to murmured in a monotonous tone, Sorry, Sir.

Kevin shook his head. He better get use to Niki and her gossipping. He waited for the slide to change then announced, As a special request from the mayor, we are supposed to keep her within our surveillance, providing protection twenty-four seven until the day she leaves, which is the subsequent day of the banquet. Also, we must be in concurrence with her pre-existing security staff, since she claims were untrustworthy.

Why would she need our protection when she claims were untrustworthy? Cant her body guards manage without us? Michelle asked after her raised hand was acknowledged by Kevin.

Good question. Actually, the request for her protection was her fathers idea, so the mayor required our cooperation. Anymore questions. As the room remained silent, Kevin turned over the spotlight to Joyce.

The task of protecting Ms. Sheh will be under Sir Chengs supervision, accompanied by five other people, while I will command the rest of you for the job of providing surveillance and security of the banquet. Understand?

Yes Madame. The voice came from everyone in the room.

Kevin picked up a folder and called, Nicholas, Bosco, Rico, Charlene, and...Niki. Since youve all had experience in this area, you will be under my supervision to protect Ms. Sheh . She was supposed to be here tomorrow but there has been a change in the flight schedule so our mission will begin the day after. We will pick her up at the airport promptly at 8:00 sharp. So that means no staying out late on Halloween, guys.

Groans could be heard coming from the people in Kevins group.

Joyce added, As for the rest of you, I will give you further instructions. Is that clear?

Yes Madame, again, everyone said in perfect unison.

Ron let out a sigh of relief, not only does he not have to babysit some rich girl, he gets to work with Michelle. A peculiar smile crept across Rons face as he gathered his belongings and headed towards the door.

Sammul sensed something about Ron was different, even though he and Michelle did pick fights with one another, Ron didnt give off the hate-vibe he did towards her before. Sammul shook his head, convincing himself he was just being paranoid.

As Vicki approached her vehicle, she felt a gentle tap on her shoulders. With a smile dispersing quickly upon her face, she swiftly turned around thinking it was Alec. As soon as she realized who it was, the smile immediately constricted into a scowl, for the tap was from no other than her ex.

What do you want now, Vic? She asked hastily, I thought I told you I want nothing to do with you.

Unexpectedly, he dropped down to his knees, grabbing Vickis arm, begging, Please, give me a chance. I love you. I know you have a boyfriend now, but he cant love you like I can. Please...just one more try. I promise I wont ever hurt you again.

Vicki was getting frustrated. He was not the man she had fallen for before. Vicki tried to back away, shaking Vics grasp from her arm. Im sorry, youve had your chance and you blew it. With your money and looks, I know you can find a more suitable girl.

Vic stood up, forcefully grabbing Vickis shoulders, Youre the only one for me. I know it! And I know you know it!

He tried to pull her into a tight embrace as Vicki shrieked, Let go, youre hurting me.

Hey! Leave her alone, Jimmy bellowed as he ran to Vickis rescue. He grabbed her from Vics grasp and yelled, I could charge you for assault.

Who the hell are you? Vic asked, eyeing Jimmy from head to toe. His badge was still clipped onto his shirt, making Vic a little apprehensive.

Im her boyfriend. What now? Vicki glared at Jimmy as soon as the words exited from his mouth. She would be in such a pickle if Alec ever finds out.

Vic shook his head in disbelief. I dont believe it. You picked a useless cop over me? A millionaire?

Jimmy gritted his teeth together, facing Vicki whispering, Play along.

She uneasily gave in and demanded, Its not like youre any better. I know he would never hurt me.

Jimmy grabbed Vickis hand, leading her away from her controlling ex, If you bother my girlfriend again, I will file a restraining order. With that said, Jimmy led Vicki away, leaving Vic standing alone in the parking lot.

When they were out of site, Vicki immediately retrieved her hand from Jimmy and said gratefully, yet uneasily, Thanks for helping me.

Do you think Im gonna get in trouble? Hawick asked nervously, as Jessica knocked on the door to the Chiefs office.

She took and deep breath then confided, Dont worry, whatever happens, Ill have your back. Besides, it wasnt your fault right? Plus, I cant afford to lose the hardest working guy in my squad.

She gave him an assuring pat as Hawick bit his bottom lip in agitation.

Come in, Chief Inspector Lee said acutely from behind the door.

From the expression on the Chiefs face, Jessica could tell it wasnt going to be good news for Hawick. Louiss solemn facial expression didnt give her much confidence either.
---
Jessica resembled a dragon as fire practically shot out of her nostrils.

Dont worry, Jess. Three week suspension isnt so bad. I couldve been fired. It was Hawicks turn to bring optimism to the situation.

Its such a ridiculous punishment for such a small screw-up. This couldve happened to anyone, Jessica fumed as she stormed down the corridor to her office, Captain tight-ass didnt help either. He just added fuel to the flame.

Hawick shrugged and sighed, Well, Captain Koo was only doing his job. But thanks for standing up for me. Sorry I made you get yelled at too.

Jessica gave his shoulder a tight squeeze, Dont worry. Ill have a talk with Captain Koo. Maybe we can work something else out.
---
Louis shook his head assertively, Sorry. Orders are orders. Besides, that small screw up couldve caused a great mishap to occur.

I cant believe this. You are being completely unreasonable! He just misplaced a file! Jessica said in an aggravated tone.

Carelessness is unacceptable, Louis reinstated, A misplacing a file is just like shooting the wrong person.

It was Jessicas turn to shake her head. I dont believe this, she clamoured, Unlike you, I actually care about my teammates. All you care about is your stupid promotion!

Leaving him with those words, Jessica stormed out of Louis office. After the door was slammed, He sighed heavily, rubbing his temples.

W-o-o-men, he groaned as he slapped his forehead, reaching for the bottle of Advil tucked away in his desk drawer.

Alec could tell something was bothering Vicki by the way she was smashing her red bean slush into mush.

Trying to distract her from her miseries, Alec suggested, Wanna go shopping? I just got paid. We can get you those Prada boots you wanted.

Nah, Im not in the mood for shopping. Vicki said earnestly. Vics appearance must have created a huge impact on her if she didnt want to buy shoes.

Alec grinned and replied, Well, we can go watch Just Like Heaven, I know youve wanted to watch that since forever. Alec snapped his fingers and added, Oh, tomorrow is Halloween! We can round up you sisters and my roommates and go pub crawling!

Vicki shook her head dully, poking her straw at the ice cubes in the glass. She was acting like the sky was falling. But you cant blame the girl, this guy was her first love, and now he had the nerve to come back asking for a second chance after what he did? Who does he think he is?

Alec could tell something was really bothering Vicki when he looked at her sweet, yet, clouded face.

Sweetie, whats bothering you? You know you can tell me anything. Alec placed an amiable hand on top of hers, giving Vicki his most cheerful smile, hoping it would be contagious. How could anyone resist? Vicki couldnt.

She sighed and responded, Well...today, my ex...

Upon hearing the word ex, Alecs heart began to rapidly hammer against his chest. Almost causing him a heart attack.

Before Vicki could finish her story, I shrilled voice cut in, Hah, so I see someones playing the field. Arent we, Vicki? Does he know about your cop boyfriend?

She could feel anger broil in the pit of her stomach as she glared at her ex, who just appeared out of nowhere. Alec darted his eyes in Vics direction then back at Vicki like a lost puppy.

Whats going on? He asked awkwardly, Whos this guy?

Vic shook his head sympathetically at Alec and reproached, I guess you dont know. Youre not the only man in her life.

Shut up, Vic! You better leave before I call the police! Vicki snapped, shooting up from the booth.

Vic left as quickly as he appeared after he taunted, Whoa, no need to bring your other boyfriend into this.

When he had disappeared, Vicki looked meekly at Alecs beclouded and maddened face. His usual cute, boyish grin had completely been wiped off his handsome face. He stared back at her, waiting for an explanation.

Im sorry, I can explain everything. Alec gazed at his girlfriends aghast face, as she breathlessly zipped through the entire story from start to finish, leaving out no detail.
