Chapter 1

"Appa! Please, don't go now!" Ri In sobbed beside her dad, who was laying helplessly on the bed. Her shouts hollowed through the huge mansion. Han Kyung, on
the other side of the mansion came running into his step-dad's room.

He gasped. Mr. Jang was in a bad condition. He had been suffering from cancer and they all knew that it wouldn't be long before he passes away. Han Kyung
quickly called for his mom, who came running in just like her son when she heard the news.

When she saw her husband's condition, she ran to the bedside and interlocked her hands with his. Tears started to flow down, she knew this too. Knowing this, she didn't say anything, just kneeling on the carpet, keeping silent.

"I don't have much time left, do I?" Mr.Jang asked, barely above a whisper.

"Shhhhh..." Mrs. Han said as she tried to shush him and she squeezed his shoulder. Ri In was crying, leaning onto Han Kyung's shoulders as he rubbed her back to comfort her.

"Oppa, he's going to leave us," she sobbed. Han Kyung just caressed her hair. He didn't want to object the fact and kept silent too.

"Han Kyung, even though she's not your sister by blood, please take care of her as your own, okay?" Mr.Jang said. Han Kyung nodded and made a manly promise.
Mr. Jang smiled in return and it was the last smile the three ever saw again.

Though they were very rich, after the death of the family man, everything fell out of place. Business partners played tricks on them and they were left with
nothing but their souls.

*End of 4 months*

It was already 11 thirty at night and Han Kyung had not come back from work yet. Ri In fiddled on the chair as she waited impatiently for her oppa. She
wondered if he got beaten again. The feeling of him not being at home was just not right. She missed his smile, warmth and most importantly, love. She shook
her head, she can't possibly fall in love with her own step-brother. Just then, a loud bang was heard from the front door. She got up quickly and rushed to
it. When she opened the door, a beat up Han Kyung plunged onto her lean body. She had to try very hard to control his body weight.

"Ri In, I'm sorry, I didn't keep my promise today," he said as he leaned his tired head on her shoulder. She held onto his waist that was covered with
bruises.

"It's okay, come on, get in, I'll clean you up," she said. Her praying was not enough today, she guess, since he got beaten up again.

She walked him into the bathroom and rinsed out his wounds.

"Ahh.." he frequently grunted since his cuts were deep. Though her face was full with sorrow, she was still beautiful. He longed for her as her touches became necessary.

"Tsk tsk, it'll be okay," she soothed him as she reached out her hand to smooth the skin. He was about to reach out his hand to hold hers but hesitated and
pulled it back to himself.

As Ri In cleaned the wounds, she couldn't help but let her tears fall down her cheeks. Han Kyung noticed this and wiped them away with his thumb.

"Don't cry Ri In, I'm okay," he said. His words made her cry out even more knowing that he's hiding his pain away from her.

She wrapped her arms around his waist all of a sudden and sobbed. "Oppa, I don't want to see you like this again. Please quit that construction work. The
boss is too mean to beat you up like this. I can't stand this anymore, please. If your wounds keep increasing, you might not be able to do anything anymore."

Han Kyung felt hurt, not because of his cuts and bruises but because of his love that was going to burst out any moment now. 'I'm her step-brother, I'm her
step-brother' he controlled himself. But it was not enough. He pulled her in front of him and stared into her eyes.

"Ri In," he said. "I love you." Ri In gasped and her eyes were wide shocked. He placed his hands on her shoulders and said, "It's okay if you don't feel the
same way. I just need you to know that I love you." With that, he walked out of the bathroom.

The next day, it rained nonstop. Ri In went with Han Kyung to the street side restaurant while he went to his site. The whole day, they had to work, nothing
else. If not, they might starve and wouldn't be able to take care of the sick Mrs. Han.

It was getting late in the night and Ri In wanted to go home since she didn't feel comfortable leaving Mrs. Han alone in the house for long. She excused herself for the day and walked home with an umbrella.

She heard footsteps following her and turned back to see no one there. Then suddenly, someone flipped her umbrella away, leaving her in the mist of the
raindrops. Then that someone snaked his hands around her waist.

"Look what I've got, a cutie," he said. Ri In panicked, she turned around to see a street rat. He pulled her by the wrist into an alley and pinned her against the dirty wall.

"Go away!" she shouted at him, hitting his chest. He smirked and started kissing her roughly.

"Hmmn..let me go!" she said between the kisses. She tried to break free from his grasp but he was too strong. He snaked his hands under her skirt, making
her feel uncomfortable.

Ri In couldn't take it anymore and slapped him on the face. "Wow, you're a naughty girl, I like that," he said and quickly unbuttoned her blouse, still
pushing her against the wall. Ri In's eyes were filled with tears now.

Then a person came into her mind. "Oppa! HAN KYUNG OPPA! OPPA! HAN KYUNG! OPPA! HELP ME!" she started screaming as she pushed the guy away.

The guy shut her mouth with his dirty palm and snickered. "Shut up and be quiet, or I'll be hard on you," he threatened her. Ri In's sobs echoed through the
rain.

When the guy was about to take off Ri In's skirt, a hand pulled him back.

"WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING TO HER?!" the person shouted. And by the voice, Ri In knew that it was Han Kyung right at the point.

Han Kyung started punching him, nailing him to the ground, crouching on top of the guy. The guy was not as strong as him and retreated, running away and
tripping in the middle of the path.

"GET LOST!" Han Kyung shouted and turned to Ri In. She was half naked and was soaked in the rain. He sat next to her and wrapped his jacket around her.
Hugging her in his embrace, Ri In felt safe again. She leaned into his chest and sobbed.

"Oppa," she called as she looked up at his handsome face.

"Hmm?" he replied.

She hugged his waist and said, "I love you too." Han Kyung tightened his grip and leaned down to kiss her forehead.

`

With Ri In by his side, there was nothing Han Kyung feared in this life. He listened to her every word and loved her dearly. Ri In took care of Han Kyung's
health and body. Without arguing with him, she stayed home and cared for Mrs. Han.

Han Kyung quit his job due to Ri In's worries and went to work at an electronics company. Nobody noticed him as Mr.Jang's step-son anymore since his young
rich face had transformed into an elderly experienced grown man. First working there as one of the co-workers in the main office, he worked his way up the
ladder. Day by day, month by month and year by year, their family improved. With the regular income he was getting, the family had a stable lifeline.

Mrs. Han was getting better every day and finally healed back due to the good foods that were brought home and the regular medical checkups.

But all these years he and Ri In did not disclose their relationship to Mrs. Han for they feared she might reject them as one.

One day, Han Kyung came back home from work with a great surprise. Ri In and Mrs. Han were making dinner in the kitchen. He ran up to Ri In and hugged her
waist from behind. Being so happy with the news he will soon be announcing, he didn't notice his mother standing there. While he tried to kiss her lips, she
signalled him to stop. "Mother!" she quickly whispered into his ears and he looked up.

Mrs. Han had her hand over her mouth. Ri In quickly scooted away from Han Kyung.

"Umma, it's not like what you think it is," he insisted.

"Not like that? The way you look at her and touch her, am I not thinking right?" his mom glared at him. He couldn't refuse, she knew him too well. "Don't you
remember what her father said before he passed away? You're suppose to take care of her! You're her step-brother!"

"But I want to take care of her in this way!" he shouted back. His mom stomped out of the kitchen.

Ri In went down on her knees and cried quietly. She regretted for falling in love with her own step-brother. If it weren't for her, the fight between the two wouldn't have happened. Han Kyung seemed to be reading her thoughts and went down next to her.

"It's not your fault, she'll understand us later," he soothed.

Ri In kissed his lips gently and quickly. "Oppa, let's end this," she said and got up without another word.

"I was going to say that I got promoted as the manager of the whole company," he mumbled as he kicked the cupboard near him.

And from that day on, the barrier between step-brother and step-sister relationship was never crossed.

Happiness faded away day by day as the two rarely interacted with each other, scared that love might sparkle between them again. This went on for months
until one day.

Mrs. Han fell down the front steps and landed on her face. Unlucky as she was, there were sharp objects and thorns on the ground that day. Her whole body was pointed with the spikes. Han Kyung and Ri In rushed to the hospital.

Mrs. Han was lying on the bed with bandages all wrapped around her body. She did not look well at all. A doctor came in and asked for a relative and both of
them went with him to talk outside.

"Mrs. Han is in a really bad situation right now. We tried to do everything we could, but we're not sure if she can make it today. The main parts of her body were injured really badly. Some of the thorns were taken out but some were too deep we can't even see them with our naked eye. And we're guessing one long one poked right into her heart. We're really sorry," the doctor said.

"Doctor! You're suppose to save her! WHY CAN'T YOU GET ALL OF THESE THORNS OUT?!" Han Kyung retorted, pulling the doctor by the collar and leaning him
against the wall. Ri In gasped.

The doctor faced away and said, "We're sorry, her condition is something we can't help out." With that he walked away.

Han Kyung bent down on his knees and sat against the wall, face in his hands.

"She's leaving us too," he said - his first sentence to Ri In today. She went to him, bending down to pat his back. She wanted to be there for him to drive all his problems away and make him happy in a way.

Her eyes widened as he pulled her into him seconds later. She tried to fight back but failed.

"Please, just stay like this for a while, just for a while," he whispered, hugging her tighter. "You'll be the only one I'll have left once she's gone."

For a while, Ri In stiffened to his embrace but later allowed herself to drift into his warmth. Han Kyung shifted his head from time to time to feel
comfortable on her shoulder.

"Ri In," he started. "I still have feelings for you."

Ri In bit her lips, trying hard not to blurt out her true feelings. "Oppa..."

"Shh..It's okay, let's go and check out on mom," he said as he got up and lead her into the room.

Mrs. Han opened her eyes as she heard the door open. She herself knew that she doesn't have much time left. Pain was all over her old body.

"Han Kyung, Ri In, come beside me," she whispered and coughed out blood. But knowing that the two will worry about her even more, she covered the red stains with the blanket.

They went up to the bedside and waited for her to say something. "Ri In dear, I'm sorry," she said, holding her hands.

"Why, aunty?" she asked, wondering why Mrs. Han needed to say sorry.

"Knowing that you and Han Kyung were so in love with each other, I was the main reason for your love to end. I was too concerned with your father's words.
Mianhe dear," she apologized, forcing out a smile despite her pain.

"Oh, you don't need to worry about that. Han Kyung and I are not like that now," she replied.

Han Kyung cut in and said, "Umma, does this mean that it's okay for us to cross the brother and sister line, since you're saying sorry?"

"Ever since we had that fight, I noticed that our lives became duller and filled with sorrow. I want you two to be happy when I'm not there," she said.

"What do you mean when you're not there? You're going to make it through, I know," Han Kyung said, faking a happy smile.

"I heard everything. I know what will happen to me. I just want both of you to know that I want you guys to be happy," she said, smiling.

Ri In started to tear up. Han Kyung put his arm around her shoulder to comfort her.

"You know what mom meant, it's okay to release your feelings now," he whispered into her ears. He too slid a tear after seeing his mom in this condition.

He went up and held her hands. "Umma, I promise I'll make Ri In happy. We WILL be happy. You just rest here, okay?"

Mrs. Han smiled. This smile that was the most warmth giving smile was the last one she gave.

`
Years later....

White,
Pure, innocent and light
Flowing down her dress as soft as silk.

Pink,
sweet, fresh and young
radiant on the curves of her cheeks.

Diamonds,
clear, shiny and a woman's best friend
dangling from her ears and wrapped around her neck and wrists.

Flowers,
warmth, love and happiness
covered the dreamy walkway that lead to eternity.

People,
winter, summer, and monsoon,
in silence as they stood in unison.

Her eyes
almond like and breathtaking
sparkling as the light shone above her.

Everything was perfect,
soft music played in the background
he stood waiting,
waiting for the moment they become one.

Minutes passed
The time is near
vows read
glances exchanged,

"I do"
"I do"

"You may now kiss the bride," the father said.

Han Kyung leaned in to kiss Ri In on the lips. She blushed deep red even though this isn't the first time he kissed her like this.

"I love you," he whispered into her ears as he kissed her cheek.

"I love you too," she whispered back, smiling.

Ri In's 'living on a prayer' days were way over now since Han Kyung had been promoted to the director of the company from the manager spot. Not to mention his safety, money was pouring in like water. He was a respectful director and everyone believed in him. He had now regained his wealth and rank in society.

Ever since Mrs. Han's death, Ri In and Han Kyung built up their relationship day by day. Ri In was shy at first but with Han Kyung's overflowing love, she managed to show her true feelings later on.

And now, sitting at the last row of the church was Mrs. Han. No one could see her but she could see everyone.

Smiling to herself, she mumbled out the words, "I'm glad you two are happy with each other now. Ri In, you are the best daughter-in-law for me. Now you and my son could live happily ever after, thanks to your prayers every day .... for the past few years. Goodbye Ri In, Han Kyung."

Han Kyung and Ri In smiled to each other as they took each other's hands in theirs and happily walked down the aisle as the official couple, Mr. and Mrs. Han. Nothing could separate them now and they knew it.

"Jang Ri In, saranghae."

"Han Kyung, saranghae."

They sweet talked to each other and giggled.

-THE END-

`

Well, that's the end. How did I do? I had really fresh ideas for this story at the start but they started to fade away as I started writing. I now have no intention to win this but wish me GOOD LUCK!

It's not much of a love story but the title was hard to fit in with love. Anways, thank you for reading!
