Chapter 18
The President's Son
It continued to pour, the rain soaked me to the bones. I was FREEZING! But I still stood there, in the pouring rain, looking at my bloodstained hand.
“I'm okay,” I repeated, “really.” The president smiled, “You don’t feel ANY pain at all?” I shook my head, “No, i'm just cold, but I care more about my macchiato that I dropped.” I glanced over at his two bodyguards who still held onto the assassinator. The president laughed at my remark, “Its okay. Its just a drink.” He glanced at his watch, “Aiyo, I need to attend to a meeting, but I’ll get someone to accompany you.” He walked over to his limo, and opened the door. A figure sat inside the limo. The president whispered something to the figure, then he (the president) got inside the limo, as the person that he had just whispered to, got out. “I’ll have my son accompany you,” the president said. I nodded, “Oh, xie xie ni.”
The limo drove off, leaving only me, the president’s son, and the two bodyguards who still held onto the assassinator, behind. The president’s son walked towards me with an umbrella that covered his face, so I didn’t see how he looked like. When he finally stood three steps away from me, he held out the umbrella to me, so the rain no longer dropped on me and it was now pouring down on him. I looked up at him, and I forgot all about the rain, I forgot how cold I was...i didn’t even want to go home anymore!
I stood there in shock, staring at Wang Zi as he continued to hold the umbrella, so the rain didn’t wet me. “Ni?!” I exclaimed, “YOU'RE the president’s son!?” He ignored me, and motioned for the two bodyguards to come over. They still held onto the assassinator as they walked towards Wang Zi and me.
“Pa said he’ll send for someone to pick you guys up,” Wang Zi said to the bodyguards, “and he said he’ll send a limo for me, in a bit. But in the meantime, call for police to pick up that person.” I didn’t dare to look up. Especially not after I had jumped the assassinator. I just looked down at the puddles, on the ground, being formed by the rain. Wang Zi STILL held onto the umbrella with his left hand. I nearly glanced up as Wang Zi tossed his cell phone over to the bodyguards, IN THE RAIN! One of the bodyguards caught it, with his free hand, while the other hand, and the other bodyguard, continued to hold onto the assassinator. The bodyguard, who caught the cell phone, sent for police to come pick up the assassinator. Then he (the bodyguard) tossed the cell phone back to Wang Zi. A gust of wind blew and the cell phone flew at me. I don’t know why I didn’t make an attempt to catch it, but instead, I closed my eyes...thinking it would hurt me less.
After 35 seconds, I opened my eyes because I didn’t feel the phone hit my face. I opened my eyes to see what had happened to it. I saw Wang Zi’s hand in front of my face, with the phone in it. I let out a big sigh, relieved that it didn’t hit my face. Then I realized, the arm that Wang Zi had used to catch the phone, was bandaged! It was his RIGHT arm!
*Flashback*
“His right hand got infected by the chemicals that were in the beakers,” she started, “so he can't use his right hand for anything, until it heals...or else...he’ll increase the chances of becoming crippled. Please look out for him, I don’t think he’ll actually follow my directions.” I smiled, “Oh, I will then. Xie xie.”
*End of Flashback*
Wang Zi’s hand lowered from my face, and he was about to put his cell phone into his pocket, using his RIGHT hand. “Wei!” I exclaimed, “Ni! Ni-“ I held onto his arm, and slowly took the phone out from his right hand. “Didn’t Tian Yi tell you to not use your right hand for anything?!” I yelled at him in the rain. “She TOLD you?” he asked. “Yea!” I yelled back, “what about it!? What’re you gonna do about it!?” “Mei you la,” he answered, “so if you DON’T want me to use my right hand, you’ll have to put the phone in my pocket for me.” “Mei-mei you,” I stuttered. I traded the umbrella in his right hand, with his cell phone. “There,” I said, “use your left hand.” “Whatever,” he remarked, “all that just because my right hand is fragile?”
He stuck his phone into his pocket, and I noticed that he was getting wet by the rain! I held the umbrella away from me, over to him, so I was getting wet again...but he wasn’t.
Wang Zi: What are you doing?
Me: Huh? Oh, I don’t want you to get wet.
Wang Zi: Yea, ok. And now YOU'RE getting wet.
Me: So? What do you care? You don’t care about me.
Wang Zi stood quiet for a bit, then he mumbled, “Just for today...” “What?” I asked, not sure I heard right. “Just for today,” he repeated, “I have to.” Half of me died after those words were said... “Just for today...” Meaning...never again.
“Why...?” I asked calmly, even though I was screaming at him inside my head. “My dad...” Wang Zi began, “...told me to...accompany you.” I still held the umbrella over him, but I didn’t want to look him in the eye. If I had looked him in the eye...he’d have known I was crying. “Just for today...i have to....My dad told me to accompany you,” his words stuck inside my head, carving themselves into my heart. It only made me cry more, but he wouldn’t know...i was soaked in rain, and my face was soaked in tears and rain.
(Wang Zi’s P.O.V.)
Gui Gui continued to hold the umbrella over me. She was getting soaked badly by the rain, but she still insisted to hold the umbrella over me. She didn’t bother to look up at me, and I didn’t want her to get sick. I took the umbrella out of her hands, and held it over her. She looked up at me and I could see that she was crying to herself. I didn’t want to say anything, so I took her wrist and led her to the coffee shop.______________________
