Chapter 21

The Secret

I stared at the phone number... “Wo bu zhi dao,” I answered. “Call it,” Wang Zi remarked. I stared at the phone number, then I opened up the message:
Gui Gui, what happened? Why’d you jump that man?? All that, just to save someone??? Are you okay? Call me back when you get this message.
I dialed in the number, then called. I hung up after the first ring. “Why’d you do that?” Wang Zi asked as he still leaned towards the phone and me. My heart thumped SO fast, I felt every beat of it. Wang Zi still held onto my wrist, and it sent static all over me. I managed to hold onto myself, and ask, “Can I borrow your phone?” “For what?” he asked me back as he finally let go of my hand. “Aiyo, just lend it to me, please,” I urged him. “Mei you,” he said as he took out his cell phone and turned it on. 42 missed calls, voice mails, and messages. I leaned closer towards him, to see who called him so much. “Ao Quan, Xiao Yu, Xiao Jie, Ah Wei, Wei Lian...” I read aloud, “...who’s 987-6543?” I snatched his phone out of his hand. “Wei!” Wang Zi exclaimed as he took my phone out of my hands. I dialed 987-6543 on his phone. “Call it,” Wang Zi warned me, “call it, and I’ll call 123-4567 on your phone.” “Go ahead, “ I remarked, “that doesn’t bother me, I don’t care.” I called 987-6543 on his cell phone, and he called 123-4567 on mine. I hung up before it even rang once, and Wang Zi did the same.
“Let’s do this,” I began, “I’ll call 123-4567 on YOUR phone, and you call 987-6543 on my phone.” He sighed, “Ok, alright. Whatever.” “Put it on speaker,” Robert suddenly said, “I wanna hear it, too.” “Ok,” I remarked gleefully, “we’ll put it on speaker.”
*Ring! Ring!!* (it rang on the other line, on the phone I was on)
*Ring! Ring!!* (it rang on Wang Zi’s other line)
“Wei” Aaron picked up on my line (on the phone I was on), “Wang Zi, where's Gui Gui?!”
“Wei?” Liu Rong Jia picked up on the other line Wang Zi was on, “Gui Gui! you bitch! Where’s Wang Zi!?”
We both hung up at the same time, then we sat in silence. It wasn’t long until Robert cracked up and ruined the silence. I laughed with him, but Wang Zi didn’t laugh. I stopped laughing and lightly pushed Wang Zi, “Wei, what's wrong with you?” He looked at me, then he turned the phone off, and put it in his pocket, just as we arrived at the school; and he got out from the limo.
* * *
A huge group of reporters, students, and other people crowded around the limo. When they saw us get out from the limo, they gasped. I slowly got out from the limo, and carefully shut the door behind me. Wang Zi left me with the group of people, and he made his way to Ao Quan them. They stood there and talked. The big group of people began to surround me, and reporters, with their cameras, began to question me.
Reporter 1: Gui Gui, your name IS Gui Gui, right?
Reporter 2: Is this the school you go to?
Reporter 3: How do you feel about this school?
Reporter 4: Forget about the school, WHY did you jump the assassinator?
Reporter 5: How do you feel about saving the president’s life?
I didn’t answer any questions, I looked around and saw Liu Rong Jia and her group, Da Ya and Ya Tou them, Wang Zi and his group, and Aaron and his group. Aaron and his group whispered something back and forth to each other.
I stepped back, away from everyone, but I tripped when the back of my foot hit the curb. I went FALLING back, I saw Da Ya them run towards me, Liu Rong Jia and her friends got ready to laugh, Aaron ran towards me, but Wang Zi still continued to talk with Wei Lian them. “Aiyo,” I thought, “why now? Why in front of so much people? Why am I getting recorded?? No one’s helping me!” Someone grabbed hold of my arm. I didn’t see who did it, but instead of falling back, I fell forward and landed on the person. We both hit the ground with a loud *Thud!* I looked up to see who it was that had saved me, and cushioned my fall. “Wang Zi!?” I exclaimed, “Ni!?” He didn’t get a chance to say anything, because cameras flashed, and the next thing we knew, Aaron stood next to us.
Da Ya them ran over to me, and pulled me up. “Gui Gui!” Ya Tou began, but didn’t go on, because we all stared at Aaron and Wang Zi. Aaron pulled Wang Zi up, and I saw Aaron pull back a fist, ready to punch. “Aiyo,” I began, “I don’t like where this is going.”
I ran in front of Wang Zi, just as Aaron swung at him. I pushed Aaron’s fist back. “Why are you doing this, Gui Gui?” I shook me head, “No, Aaron. The question is...why are YOU doing this?” He didn’t answer, and Wang Zi didn’t move anywhere. Then Aaron finally looked me in the eyes, “Why? Why do you do this? Is it because he’s the president’s son? WHY did you save the president?” I turned away, “We’re all Asian...all one race. If we don’t look out for each other...who will? We can't let our race go extinct. No matter what we do...we’re still human.” Everyone stood quiet, even the reporters. “Besides,” I went on, “I don’t want to lose anymore lives.” I turned around, and walked off. Tong Tong them pulled me away from the crowd, and into a classroom.
Mei Mei: You know that Wang Zi is-
Xiao Xun: The president’s son?
Me: Huh? Oh, yea.
Ya Tou: That’s it.
Xiao Jie: That was our secret.
Me: THAT was your secret???
Da Ya: *Nod*
Me: Then why didn’t you guys tell me earlier?!
Apple: We were afraid...that...
Xiao Man: Gui Gui, we didn’t want your feelings to change.
Me: How will my feelings change? Why?
Ya Tou: Because he’s engaged.
