Chapter 23

Friends?

Me: Aiyo, shut up.
“Ok,” Ms. Ting began as she walked into the class, “today we will begin odes. Odes are poems that praise something or someone. A rhythmic pattern isn't needed, and I want you guys to compose your own ode by tomorrow. You have the rest of class time to begin your ode.”
I took out a piece of paper and wrote the first thing that came to my head: ‘Ode to Lost Ones’. Then I thought about everyone I've lost...Pa, Grandpa... I thought back, back to when I was still small... Ge (older brother)! How come I forgot about him!? How COULD I forget about him?! He’s my ONLY brother, my only sibling!
I began to write; my heart and soul poured out on the paper. *TAP!* A piece of paper landed on my desk, in front of me. I looked around to see who had thrown it. “Pssst!” Aaron whispered, saying it was him. “Oh,” I mumbled, “so it was you.” He smiled again, and I thought to myself, “Why is he smiling?” I opened up the paper: Meet me after class. “What...?” I mumbled, then I wrote, “What? Where? Why?
I tossed it back to Aaron, and continued to write my ode. I glanced at Wang Zi from the corner of my eye. He saw the whole thing, but he ignored it, and continued to write his ode.
Aaron tossed the note back: Meet me afterschool, in the front, I want to talk to you. I wrote back: Okay!

*Ding Dong* (End of school day!)
I reread my poem one last time, then I walked out of the classroom, after nearly everybody had left. Da Ya and Mei Mei them followed after me, they haven't left yet. I stopped walking, and turned around. “Uh...” I began, “I have to go back to the library to study for the science test.” “We’ll come with you,” Xiao Xun remarked. “Mei-mei you,” I stuttered, “I might take a while, so you guys can go first.” “Oh,” Da Ya began, “ok...” “Before we go,” Ya Tou began, “I just want to say that we’re going to call you later on, so keep your phone on.” I nodded, “Ok, wo zhi dao.”
After they left, I ran to the front of the school, to find Aaron. He stood by the steps, and I slowly walked over to him. “Dui bu qi,” I began, “dui bu qi.” I didn’t even look up at him, but I knew he was looking at me. When I stood about five feet away from him, I finally looked up at him. Aaron smiled...his smile was so familiar...
*Flashback*
“Gui Gui! Let’s go play basketball!”
“Oh... I don’t want to. You're too good, it makes me feel like a sore loser, and that makes me feel bad inside.”
“If you never practice, you’ll never be able to beat me. Then you’ll feel even WORSE.” (He smiled at me)
“...Aiyo, ok...i’ll play.” (I smiled back at him)
*End of flashback*
“Gui Gui,” Aaron began, interrupting my thought, “wo...wo...” I smiled up at him, “Ni...?” “Dui bu qi,” Aaron apologized, “I can be so dumb sometimes, and make so much mistakes. But I shouldn’t have asked you so many things...after all, I mean nothing to you.” He forced out a really weak smile, and I quickly smiled back at him, so he wouldn’t know I knew all about his ‘fake’ smile. Something about his apology made me want to forgive him... “Aaron,” I uttered, “you're not nothing. You're...my...friend.” He smiled a real one this time. A bright, warm smile... “Really?” he asked, “we’re friends?” I nodded, “Really.” “Ok,” he went on, “we’ll start with friends.” “START???” I thought to myself, and I found myself suddenly freaking out. I felt my hands BURN. “This is only the BEGINNING??” I continued to think to myself, “There’s going to be an END??? AIYO!” Aaron smiled, and stuck his hand out towards me. I didn’t want to take his hand, but there was something in his smile, that FORCED me to take it. So I took his hand, with my hands that were BURNING by now, and I shook his hand.
Someone tapped on my shoulder, as I finished shaking hands with Aaron. Aaron looked away, and I turned to see who it was, that had tapped on my shoulder. Da Ya them haven't left yet...neither did Ao Quan them. But they stood in the back, Wang Zi was the one that had tapped on my shoulder.
“Ready to leave now?” Wang Zi asked, COMPLETELY ignoring Aaron; as if Aaron wasn’t even there. “Or...” Wang Zi went on, “are you guys going to get affectionate first?” Nevermind, take it back, he DID notice Aaron. I ignored that last part that he said, and I answered, “Leave...where...?” “To MY place, to study...and...you're still my bodyguard,” Wang Zi remarked, then he held up his right hand to remind me. I was about to hit his right hand, but the intercom interrupted: Gui Gui, please report to the nurse’s office immediately.
“Ugh,” I made a face at Wang Zi, then I mumbled the words ‘You're lucky THIS time.’ And I walked off, towards the nurse’s office. “Gui!” Da Ya yelled. I turned around to look at her, and everyone on campus, that had heard her, also turned to look at her. Before Ao Quan had a chance to turn around, she hugged him from behind. It lasted kinda long... Then Ao Quan turned around, and hugged Da Ya. I COULDN’T believe she did it! I was just joking when I dared her, but WOW she actually did it. Ah Wei and Ya Tou them cheered, but I laughed.

“How’s things coming along?” Tian Yi asked me, as she searched for something. “Uh...” I began, “Wang Zi really didn’t listen to you, he still uses his right hand.” “Tsk, tsk, tsk,” Tian Yi uttered. “But...” I went on, “...I’ve agreed to his father, to be Wang Zi’s bodyguard.” “Wow,” she remarked, “that’s pretty smart of you. Not to mention, you DID save his dad, the president.” I laughed, “Yea, no one ever lets me forget that.” Tian Yi smiled, “Well, I just wanted to let you know, you could always come talk to me, whenever you feel like there’s no one left to talk to. You know where to find me.” I smiled back at her, “Xie xie, that’s exactly what I needed to hear. I really need someone to talk to these days.” “Let it out,” Tian Yi urged. “Are you sure?” I asked her, “it...might be long...” “I have all day,” Tian Yi remarked. “Ok,” I said. Then I began, “Who...should I like? Aaron...? Or Wang Zi...?” “You like Wang Zi?” she asked me.
Me: Uh...kinda...
Tian Yi: Rate them both, on a scale from one to ten.
Me: One is...?
Tian Yi: One is...you hate them. Ten is...you're CRAZILY in love with them.
Me: Oh, ok. Aaron is...uh...at least a four...i think.
Tian Yi: Wang Zi is...?
Me: ...Eight.
Tian Yi: Eight? Wow, I was off. I thought it would've been a ten.
Me: Aiyo, Tian Yi!...It WOULD'VE been a ten, but...
Tian Yi: But...?
Me: Ke shi...he’s...not my true love...
Tian Yi: True love?
Me: *Nod*
Tian Yi: And Aaron IS?
Me: Yea.
Tian Yi: How complicating...
Me: I know!
Tian Yi: But...you like Wang Zi?
Me: Yea. A LOT. It’s just...we don’t really know much about each other...we haven't met halfway yet.
Tian Yi: *Smile* I don’t know what to tell you...but...just follow your heart, pursue your dreams.
Me: Xie xie ni. *Smile* Somehow...those words always make me feel better.
Tian Yi: *Nods* Here. (She handed me a container with medicine)
“What's it for?” I asked. “Your hand,” Tian Yi answered, “and Wang Zi’s. You’ll have to remind him to put it on. Its medicine that is strong enough to cancel out the chemicals that got into your skin, and infected your hand. You must put it on everyday, and REMIND Wang Zi to put it on. Not even a surgery can get out the chemicals in his hand as good as this medicine can.” I nodded, “Ok. I’ll remind Wang Zi to put it on.” “Oh,” she went on, “Wang Zi came in right after school, because I called for him. His hand is getting worse, but not bad enough that it’ll become crippled, yet. Please watch over him, and make sure he doesn’t use his right hand for anything else. Not until it heals. And if he refuses to put it on, well...just do whatever you can...to make sure he gets it on his hand.”
