Chapter 25
His Broken Promise
[Recap] (Wang Zi’s P.O.V)
“Dui bu qi,” I apologized, “dui bu qi. I really shouldn’t have let my anger out on you.” Gui Gui smiled, “I understand. As crazy as it seems...i understand...” “Dui bu qi,” I apologized again. “Its okay,” Gui Gui said, “but...if you REALLY feel sorry...you’d do me this one favor.” I thought about it for a while.... “What do you want?” I asked her.
[End of Recap]
(Still Wang Zi’s P.O.V)
“Wo?” she said, “its nothing for me. I'm just trying to help you-as your bodyguard.” She pulled the container of medicine out of her bag. I looked at the medicine, I REALLY didn’t want to put it on...but I had already agreed to it when I asked her what her favor was. “Give me your right hand,” she said. I stuck my right hand out, and she took it with her injured left hand. She used her right hand to open the container. “Gui Gui,” I began. She looked up at me, “Hm?” “Should I tell her?” I asked myself, “she would probably understand...” “Ni,” I went on, “can you listen to me for a while? As a friend...instead of a bodyguard.” She nodded, “I know your going to talk about your past. About why you hate medicine so much.” “Wei,” I replied, “if you know so much, then you can just figure out what i'm going to tell you.” “Aiyo,” Gui Gui remarked, “dui bu qi.” I laughed, then I began, “When I was four, my dad went abroad to study. I was told to take care of my mom. My grandma came over to check up on my mom and me everyday. My grandma was very old, white hair filled her head, and she has ALWAYS been there for me. One day she got very sick, and Ma had to go see her, after all...Ma IS her daughter. We drove to the hospital, the doctor told Ma that Grandma wouldn’t make it. Ma didn’t believe him, she rushed to Grandma’s room; the doctor was right...Grandma was dying.” Gui Gui finished putting the medicine on my hand, and left her hand on top of mine. “Her last words to me,” I went on, “were ‘Take care of your mom and dad. Take good care of them, and don’t hurt those that listen and understand you.’ The next day, we called Pa to come home early, and he set out, towards home, right away. But he was too late...when he got home...i was the only one left. My mom had a headache...and she overdosed. At first, I thought she had just fallen asleep...but...she didn’t wake up. I began to cry...i didn’t know what to do...who to call...i was only FOUR! But...i blame myself. Grandma told me to take care of Ma and Pa...but I DIDN’T. I broke my promise to both Grandma and to Pa...i didn’t stop Ma, I didn’t know anything...” Gui Gui removed her hand on top of mine, “Wang Zi, you were only four.” “Wo zhi dao,” I said, “Gui Gui, xie xie ni.” “For what?” she asked me. “You saved my dad,” I answered, “xie xie.”
(End Of Wang Zi’s P.O.V)
I smiled at him as I closed the container of medicine. “Wei,” Wang Zi began, “You have to put it on too.” “Says who?” I remarked. “Tian Yi,” Wang Zi answered, “she said it was for OUR hands.” “Wow,” I began, “I thought you DIDN’T listen.” Wang Zi glared at me, and I went on, “Besides, my hand isn't as bad as yours.” I stuck my tongue out at him, and then I turned around to walk out. Wang Zi grabbed onto my wrist. “Ni,” he began as he turned me around, so I faced him again, “if I go down, you go down with me.” “What?” I asked as I continued to stare him in the face. “If I die because of this medicine,” he said, “then you’ll have to die with me.” “Why?” I asked, “Just because I told you to put it on?” Wang Zi nodded, “Yea, now put it on.” “Alright then,” I answered, “just to prove to you that it won't kill you.” I took out the medicine and rubbed some on my hand. Then I closed the container and stuffed it back into my bag. “Fair enough?” I asked Wang Zi, and he let go of my wrist as my phone rang.
* * *
Ma: Gui Gui-
Me: Are you going to yell? If you're going to yell-
Ma: Mei you, I'm not going to yell.
Me: Then why’d you call? I know you're not checking up on me, you wouldn’t care about me.
Ma: Ni-
Me: What.
Ma: Aiyah, your grandma-
Me: Grandma?!? Why?! What happened?!?
Ma: She’s sick, she’s in the hospital, and she wants to see you.
Me: Which hospital???
Ma: The one down the block from where we live.
“Wei!” I said, but there was no answer, “Wei! Wei!” I closed my phone, and stuck it in my pocket. Wang Zi heard my whole conversation. “Oh,” I began, “dui bu qi, I have to go.” I ran towards the door, but when I was about to open the door, Wang Zi pulled on my elbow. I turned to face him, “Huh?” “Let me go with you,” Wang Zi said. “Huh?” I asked, “For what??” “Its dark,” he answered, “I’ll accompany you, and I’ll drive you back.” “Why?” I asked, “I thought I was ‘only a bodyguard’.” Wang Zi made a face at me. “Well…” he said, “…I have to take care of my bodyguard.” I stared at him, not sure if I had heard right. “You're my one and only bodyguard,” he went on, “if I lose you, I’ll have no one to take a bullet for me.” He laughed then, and I punched him in the guts. “Ok,” I said as he coughed, “you can come.” I laughed, and opened the door for him. We rushed downstairs, and when we reached the front door, I stopped Wang Zi. He looked at me, “What?” “Ni,” I began, “how are you suppose to drive? Your right hand-“ “I still have my left hand,” he answered, “don’t worry.” Then he laughed. “I-I wasn’t WORRIED,” I stuttered, “I just…didn’t want to get into a crash.” “Tsh,” he uttered, “sure…”
We got outside, and Robert spotted us across the lawn. “Wei!” he called out, and Wang Zi and I stopped. “Where are you guys going this late at night,” Robert asked. “It’s a family emergency,” I answered. Robert pointed at Wang Zi. “Why is HE going?” Robert asked. “Wo-“ Wang Zi began. “He’s with me,” I interrupted, “he’s driving me, and I’ll be doing my job as his bodyguard, while I attend this family emergency.” “Uh huh…” Robert said, “Ok, sure…” He tossed Wang Zi the keys to his (Wang Zi’s) car.
When we reached the hospital, I rushed to Grandma’s room. Ma and Pa were still in the room, but right when I entered, they got out. Wang Zi walked them to the waiting room, and I closed the door behind me as I walked in. Grandma stared up at me as she lay on the hospital bed. Her lips were pale…her face looked dull, and her eyes gave off a lifeless glare. I kneeled down beside her, and I took her hand in mine. She gave my hand a weak squeeze, as if she was holding onto dear life…and was about to give up.______________
