Chapter 31

Odes

[Recap]
“To make the partnering easier, you’ll share your poems with your lab partners.” Da Ya and Ao Quan them laughed at Wang Zi and me, but I really didn’t mind being partnered with Wang Zi and Aaron. I’ve been with them too much, I'm actually used to them by now.
[End of Recap]

I gave my poem to Wang Zi, he handed his poem to Aaron, and Aaron gave me his poem:

Ode to Loved One(s)
Not everyone knows why
They continue to live,
But you stand
As my reason.
The reason I wake up everyday
The reason I continue to breathe
The reason I do
Whatever it is that I do.
You’ve always been there for me
When I was hurt
You stood by me,
And comforted me
For as long as I needed you,
When I cried-
You cried with me,
So...I really can't live without you.
But...
What if I didn’t have you?
What if you weren't with me anymore?
What do I do if you finally leave me?
How would I adapt-
To this new feeling?
Why am I still here...
When I don’t have you.

I waited until they both finished reading, then I said, “Aaron, what inspired you to write this poem?” He smiled, “Oh...my childhood friend that I told you about. She inspired me.” I smiled at him, “Aaron...i really think you’ll see her again...” Aaron nodded, “Xie xie.” No one said anything for a bit, then Wang Zi said, “Gui Gui, you believe in that theory?” I looked at him, “Huh?” “When people leave the earth...they become stars,” Wang Zi quoted, “you...BELIEVE that?” “How do you know about that theory?” I asked him. “My grandma... she told me about that,” he answered. “Oh,” I began, “Yea, I believe that theory.” “Wang Zi,” Aaron said, “is this really your poem? It doesn’t sound like you...” Wang Zi smiled, “I know, when I reread it...i forgot that I had wrote it...” Aaron laughed, and I said, “REALLY!? I wanna read it!” we switched poems again, and I read Wang Zi’s poem:

Ode to my Great-Grandma

I didn’t spend much time with you because
When I was born
You were already in your 80’s
But every moment I had with you
I remember so clearly
As if it happened yesterday
Everything about you
I remember very well.
Without you
I wouldn’t be able to remember
Half of what I used to be.
Your smile was warmer than the sun,
And would melt away
the ice that blocked my heart.
Your funny faces
Made me laugh my heart out
With content.
And because of all the happiness
You always showed,
I've learned to be happy too.
You understood every mistake I made
You never yelled at me
Instead, you’d say, “We learn from our mistakes.”
Your sense of humor
Never failed to entertain me.
Those fake teeth of yours,
That you would pull out to scare me
Was actually more funny
Than it was scary.
Your kindness would always fill ones heart
With content.
But all that
Left me
Quickly and quietly
As you left the world
And everything else
Behind.

“Gui Gui,” Wang Zi whispered, “why...are you...crying again?” I looked up from the paper, “Huh?” I touched my face...and it was SOAKED with tears. “Why are you crying?” Wang Zi asked again. I threw my textbook at him, “Your poem! Your poem made me cry!” everyone in the class looked at us. Aaron handed me a handkerchief. “Xie xie,” I thanked him. Wang Zi was laughing now, and after I wiped my eyes, I said, “Wei! Why are you laughing!?” “Wo?” he asked as he stopped laughing, “I thought I already told you about my grandma’s death. And yet...you STILL cried.” I laughed a mocking laugh, “Somehow...it seemed MORE sad in the poem. It was MORE detailed!” He laughed again, “You're stupid.”

“Gui Gui!” Xiao Xun exclaimed after class, “WHAT is going on???” “Yea,” Da Ya added, “you have a LONG way of explaining.” “Ok,” I said, “well... we were sharing poems, and Wang Zi had a REALLY sad poem...and I started crying.” “Not THAT!” Ya Tou exclaimed, “we were there for THAT!” “Then WHAT??” I asked. “Aiyo!” Tong Tong began, “explain why you, Wang Zi and Aaron are so...CLOSE!” “Oh...” I began, “you guys wanted to know about THAT?” They all nodded. “While you’re at it,” Xiao Jie said, “explain why you have Wang Zi’s sweater on.”
(Wang Zi’s P.O.V)
The bell rang to announce the end of class. Everyone got up and left. Except for Gui Gui and her friends. I'm guessing they’re going to ask her about everything that happened.
Ao Quan and Ah Wei them were still talking, so I left with Aaron first. We went out to the front of the school, and Aaron said, “So it’s begun.” “What?” I asked. Aaron smiled, “The game.” “Oh,” I replied, “yea, I guess it’s on.” “Play fair,” Aaron remarked as he stuck a hand, and I shook it. “Wo zhi dao,” I answered, “I already hugged her twice though.” Aaron laughed, “It’s okay. And you forgot...she still has my handkerchief.” I smiled, “Real men don’t CARRY handkerchiefs, and besides...she still has my sweater, too.” I laughed and Aaron laughed with me. “Ok,” he said, “gotta go.”
He left, just as Wei Lian them came. “Well...” Xiao Jie began, “what's going on with you and him?” I smiled, “We’re playing a game.”
* * *
Ao Quan: You guys are playing a GAME?!?
Xiao Jie: For her LOVE!?
Xiao Yu: Don’t you think that’s a little...weird...ish...?
Me:...that’s not really...the point...the point is-
Wei Lian: Wang Zi likes Gui Gui!
Me: (I clasped a hand over his mouth) Can you shut up a LITTLE?
Wei Lian: Mmm-hmm...
(I removed my hand)
Ao Quan: You hugged her TWICE!?
Me: Wo-
Ah Wei: After all that you two have been through...Wang Zi, you better win this ‘game’.
Me: Wo zhi dao. I refuse to lose this. To me, this isn't a game...it’s a matter between life and death.
(End of Wang Zi’s P.O.V)
“Oh, my gosh!” Xiao Man exclaimed, “Gui! why didn’t you call us after that night!?” “Xiao Man,” I began, “I got home at like...TWO o’clock in the MORNING.” I didn’t tell them that I never slept, because they’d worry too much. “Is your grandma okay?” Da Ya asked. I thought for a while...i didn’t really know...the answer to that question... “Wo...” I began, “wo...bu zhi dao...” “Ni bu zhi dao!?” Tong Tong exclaimed. “Wei!” Mei Mei yelled, “don’t yell at Gui! She FAINTED, REMEMBER!?” No one said anything for a split second, then Ya Tou said, “Gui...why’d you promise to be with your true love...forever???” “Aaron,” Xiao Jie began, “why’d you promise to be with Aaron, forever???” “i...” I began, “I didn’t know...i forgot it was him...” “Aiyo...” Xiao Xun started, “well...if it makes you feel any better...you DID hug Wang Zi twice.” I faked a smile, “I know! Isn't that great!” “Gui!” Apple interrupted me, “you ACTUALLY let someone know about...the past...?” I nodded, “Yea. He told me about HIS, too.”
“Da Ya,” I began, “can you guys do me a favor?” “Yea,” she answered, “sure, what is it???” “Can you guys go see Grandma and call me to tell me how she’s doing?” I asked. “Of course!” Ya Tou exclaimed, “at a time like this...we were going to go anyways! I miss your grandma...” “Aw,” I said, “xie xie ni! I still have to go find Aaron and give him his handkerchief.” Da Ya stared me in the eye, “Gui...you...like...Aaron, don’t you?”
