Chapter 33

My Broken Promise

“Grandma,” I began, “we’re leaving now.” “Oh,” grandma started, “ok. Visit again.” I nodded, “I will.” “You too, Wang Zi,” Grandma said. He smiled and then he nodded, “Wo zhi dao.”
Just as Wang Zi and I left the hospital, Ma and Pa got out from their car, and walked over to us. “Gui Gui,” Ma began, “we need to take your grandma out of the hospital.” “What?” I asked. “The hospital bill came,” Pa went on, “its too much for us to handle.” “We need to take your grandma out of the hospital,” Ma repeated. “Let me see the bill,” I said. Ma and Pa exchanged looks... “Mei-mei you,” Ma stuttered, “we forgot it...at...home.” “Ma,” I muttered, controlling my anger, “I MAY be stupid, but I still have a brain.” “Ni...” Pa started, “what are you trying to say...?” “Don’t play COY with me,” I said, “I KNOW you guys don’t want to pay for Grandma...just because she’s not ‘family’, to you guys. But...then again...even if she WAS family...you guys STILL wouldn’t care.” “WHAT?!” Ma exclaimed, “Gui Gui! How dare you say that!” She raised a hand, and swung it at me. I winced, but I heard Wang Zi say, “Its not right to hit your daughter in public. Its not right to hit your daughter at all.” I looked and saw that Wang Zi held onto Ma’s wrist. “Dui bu qi,” he apologized to Ma as he let go of her wrist. “Ni...” Ma began, it was obvious she was mad, “you think that just because you're the president’s SON, you can do ANYTHING!?” “Ma!” I yelled, “leave him out of this! Its just you, Pa, and me.” Ma gave me a scary smile, “No, this conversation is over. We’re going to get your grandma out from that hospital. Its OBVIOUS that she’s NOT even sick.” “WEI!” I yelled at her, breaking the promise to Jun Yin, “you can't say that!” “Why not???” she asked me with the scary smile still on her face. “You killed my dad,” I began, “I won't let you kill grandma, too. You killed my family, and sabotaged my happiness...” That wiped the smile off her face, and she glared at me, “You have no right to accuse me of that.” “But...” I started, “its true. If you hadn't divorce Pa, Grandpa wouldn’t have left. If you had just let Jun Yin and me see Pa one last time...both Jun Yin and Pa wouldn’t have left. And besides...what would YOU know about rights? You tried to hit me just now, in front of the hospital.” Wang Zi interrupted, “I’ll be right back. I need to go to the washroom.” “Oh,” I began, “ok.” He left his things with me, and he went back into the hospital.
Ma didn’t say anything, she just stared at me. a while later, she finally said, “I don’t care about what you say, all I know is, i'm not going to waste my money on something that doesn’t even concern me.” Pa and Ma left me, and entered the hospital, just as Wang Zi came out. I handed him his things. “Lets go,” he said, I looked up at him. “There’s really nothing you could do...” he went on. I thought for a while...
*Flashback*
“I’ll only be his bodyguard until his right hand heals.” “Fair enough,” Mr. Qiu said, “But I want you to know, I’ll gladly rehire you anytime.”
*End of Flashback*
We were driving back to Wang Zi’s place, and I asked, “Wang Zi...how’s your hand?” He laughed, “Well, that was out of nowhere.” “I'm serious,” I said. “Oh, ok,” he remarked, “my hand healed. Why? Why do you ask?” “I was thinking...” I began, “ I want to become a full-fledged bodyguard...you know...? Because...i only said I’d be your bodyguard until your hand healed...but...” “I know,” Wang Zi interrupted me, “I know. ...How’s your hand?” I looked at it, “It’s okay...i guess...i think it healed a couple of days ago...i kinda forgot about it.”
When we finally arrived at his place, he left the car parked outside of the front gate, and we got out. I took out the key, and unlocked the front gate. “That’s probably your first time using the key,” Wang Zi remarked, then he laughed. “It’s not my fault its so gorgeous,” I said, “GOSH! I'm afraid of breaking it.” Wang Zi laughed, “Tsh, you're so stupid.”
We got inside the house, and Wang Zi went upstairs. “See you after you get rehired,” he said, “I’ll be where we studied last time.” I nodded, “Okay.” I was walking down the hall, and I saw Robert. “Wei!” I whispered, kinda loud, “Robert! PSST!” he saw me and bowed, “Ni hao, Gui Gui,” I bowed, “Oh, ni hao. Do you know where Mr. Qiu’s office is?” He pointed down the hall, “Make a left once you reach that corner.” “Oh, ok,” I said, “xie xie.” Robert left, and I walked down the hall and made a left turn. I knocked on the door, and Mr. Qiu answered, “Come in.” I walked in, and he greeted, “Oh! Ni hao, Gui Gui!” I bowed, “Ni hao, Mr. Qiu.” “Haven't talked to you for a while! What’s wrong?” he went on. He motioned for me to have a seat, so I sat in the chair on the other side of his desk. “Mr. Qiu...” I began, “Wang Zi’s hand healed...so...i know i'm suppose to quit...” Mr. Qiu motioned for me to pause, so I stopped, and he wrote something down. Then he ripped it out, and handed it to me. “What is it?” I asked. “You’d know, if you LOOKED at it,” he said as he chuckled. I looked at it, and it was a check for $100,000. “I-I,” I stuttered, “I can't...accept this...dui bu qi...” I handed it back to him, but he said, “Gui Gui, I know you need the money. You still have your grandma’s hospital bill to pay.” “Ni-“ I began, “how...did you...know...?” He held up his phone, “Textmessaging.” I looked on the bottom...and it was Wang Zi’s cell phone number. “Aiyo,” I muttered, “stupid Wang Zi.” “Gui Gui,” he said, “I know I said I’d rehire you ANYTIME, but...i feel like i'm taking over your life. And I don’t want to take over your life, so I’ll give you a whole year of living your normal life again. After that year, if you STILL want to be Wang Zi’s bodyguard, I’ll rehire you. In the meantime, I want you to have that money. Use it on anything you want, if its not enough, come back, I’ll gladly give you more.” “Oh,” I uttered, “xie xie ni. I really can't thank you enough.” He smiled, “You saved my life, that’s not really...NORMAL...but... that’s brave. The world needs brave people like you and Wang Zi. It seems like you two have been through a lot of pain...yet you two still manage to face whatever life throws at you. And that money is also for you being Wang Zi’s bodyguard.” “Oh...” I said, “Ok. Xie xie ni.” I got up and bowed, “I’ll be leaving now. I still have to study with Wang Zi.” He nodded and I left.

I walked in the living room, and Wang Zi was still studying. He looked up when I opened the door, “How’d it go?” I smiled, “Today’s my last day as your bodyguard.” He picked up his phone, and called someone. Then after he hung up, he went back to studying. I guess he really DIDN’T care...i yawned, and he looked up from his book. He looked up from his book, and laughed at me. “What?” I said as I opened my textbook, “I'm sleepy.” He nodded, “I know, I see that.” I walked over to the couch, and I was about to sit and study, but Wang Zi pulled me by my elbow. I fell on top of him, just as the curtains came crashing on where I WOULD'VE sat, if Wang Zi hadn't pulled me. “Wow,” I laughed, “that would've hurt.” I looked down, and my nose touched Wang Zi’s. He smiled at me, and I smiled back, just as the door swung opened.
