Chapter 8

Lab Partners

“GOOD MORNING, Ms. Ting,” the class greeted. “Good morning class,” she replied, “today we will go to the science lab. We will be in there all week.” Ya Tou raised her hand. “Yes, Ya Tou,” Ms. Ting called on her. “Oh...” Ya Tou said (it sounded like she lost her words), “...uh...OH! yea! Do we go straight to the lab tomorrow?” “Yes,” Ms. Ting answered, “you guys will go straight to the lab all week, this week. You guys will be assigned to a science partner, and then I’ll hand out chemicals for you guys to study. This week we will be reviewing chemicals.” “A partner...?” I thought, “I wonder who I’ll get!” Ms. Ting began to assign partners. She assigned half the class, and then she assigned Da Ya with Ao Quan, Ya Tou with Ah Wei, Wei Lian with Apple, Xiao Yu with Xiao Xun, Xiao Jie with Xiao Jie, Tong Tong and this girl named Rong jia (Liu Rong Jia), and Xiao Man with Mei Mei. “Aiyo!” I thought, “Who am I suppose to be partnered with, now?!” “Gui Gui,” Ms. Ting called out, “since there is no other way...you’ll have to be partnered with Wang Zi-“ “Yes!” I thought to myself, “I get to be partnered with Wang Zi!” “-And Aaron,” the teacher finished. “NO!” I yelled aloud, when I meant to think it to myself. “What happened?” Wang Zi asked, as he turned to look at me. I forgot why he had asked me that, and my heart began to thump real fast. My knees got weak...if I was standing up, instead of sitting down, I would’ve collapsed. “Huh?” I uttered, “Oh...uh...mei you la... I just accidentally killed a bug.” “Didn’t you kill one LAST time...?” Rong Jia asked, ruining my moment, “and you seemed AWFULLY happy.” I got SO pissed at her. One, she ruined the moment...two, she KILLED my excuse...three, she was just SO annoying! Her bitchy eyes glared at me, her voice threatened me...i couldn’t STAND it! I slammed my hand on my desk as I got up. Aaron held onto my arm, holding me back. “Don’t do whatever you planned to do,” Aaron remarked. I didn’t want him to hold onto my arm, so I freed myself from his grip, and plopped myself back down into my seat. I began to swear under my breath, but I stopped when Wang Zi looked at me and laughed. I wanted to fake out a smile, to keep him laughing, but I actually smiled...a REAL smile, and laughed along with him. I guess he heard me swear under my breath, Rong Jia glared down at me.
After the bell rang, to announce the end of the day, Da Ya pulled me and we ran out of the class. We ran to the back of the school, to the fountain. The fountain at our school was HUGE! It was created to beautify the school, bring happiness, and was dedicated to the ‘former’ principle that passed away last year. He was honored with this HUGE fountain, because he liked moving water... ‘It sparkles in the sunlight...and glows in the dark...the sound that it produces...is almost just like music...its even better than music,” he quoted. He was said to be the BEST principle ever...and I believed in that. He really WAS the best principle ever... he always will be... “Gui!” Da Ya began, “I can't believe you have to be partnered with Wang Zi and Aaron!” I laughed, “Yea, and you're partnered with Ao Quan! Have fun! Make sure you TALK!” Da Ya laughed back at me, and then said, “Actually...my situation...compared to yours...is a LOT better.” “Aiyo!” I exclaimed, “Da Ya, don’t compare your life with mine...you’ve been there with me, everytime I was hurt, everytime I sat alone in the dark, everytime I stayed home alone at night, everytime-” “OK!” Da Ya interrupted, “I get it! I get it!” I laughed, and Da Ya went on, “Gosh...you know...now that I think about your past...i feel REALLY sorry for you. Dui bu qi, Gui Gui. Now I know why you’re always pissed off, and don’t talk about the past.” “Da Ya,” I began, “how am I suppose to work with both, Aaron and Wang Zi...when I like ONLY Wang Zi... Da Ya...what am I suppose to do...?” I was about to go on, but Mei Mei interrupted, “Gosh, Gui Gui. I can't believe we ran out of time to go to the lab today!” Da Ya seemed to ignore them. “What took you guys so long?” Da Ya asked as Mei Mei them walked towards us. “We were STILL talking to our LAB partners,” Xiao Xun answered, “unlike YOU two.” “Aiyah, Xiao Xun, shut up,” I replied, “we don’t need you to rub it in our faces.” “Yea,” Da Ya added. “And besides,” I said, “Da Ya pulled me out of the class right when the bell rang.” Xiao Jie laughed, “Gui Gui, I feel so sorry for you, because you have to be partnered with BOTH Wang Zi and Aaron.” Apple them laughed. “Uh...” Da Ya began, “I don’t think you guys should joke at a time like this...” “Why not?” Ya Tou asked. “Because Gui Gui is already pissed because she has to be partnered with BOTH of them, and she only likes-“ I stopped her, because I tugged on her shirt. Xiao Man noticed, because she said, “Gui Gui, let Da Ya tell us. We’re all friends, we’ve been there for each other since we were SO small...please tell us! You have to trust us!” I thought.... “Damn, she makes such a good point...” “Alright,” I began, “I’ll tell you guys myself...over the phone, when I call you guys, later on.” “Why not now?” Tong Tong asked. “Because...” I began, “...i want to talk to you guys in private, so no one would hear us.” “Well...” Mei Mei started, “then, it must be VERY personal.” I laughed, “Yea. I know...” “I don’t like my partner!” Tong Tong exclaimed (out of nowhere), “She is SO bitchy! She’s like... ‘THIS is wrong, and THIS is wrong, and THIS, I don’t like.’ Gosh! I just want to punch her! That freakin bitch. What the hell is wrong with her!? She has PROBLEMS! She REALLY has something against us.” “Especially you, Gui Gui,” Xiao Xun added. “Yea,” Ya Tou said, “Did you see how she fought back against you, when you faked the excuse that you ‘accidentally’ killed a bug.” “Oh,” I began, “yea...” “Tong Tong,” Apple began, “no one likes their partner.” I pointed at Da Ya, but she didn’t see, because I was behind her. Xiao Jie them laughed, “Except for Da Ya.” I laughed with them. “So?” Da Ya uttered, “what’s wrong with that?” We continued to laugh, because of how red Da Ya was. “Then prove it,” I said, “talk with Ao Quan.” Da Ya turned away, and sighed. “Come on!,” Apple urged, “now would be a perfect time for you to become friends with Ao Quan!” “Yea!” I exclaimed, “Da Ya, you HAVE to do it! We know how much you like him!” “Yea,” Ya Tou added, “and it is SO obvious that he likes you too!” “Yea,” Xiao Man said, “remember the first time we met!? Gosh, they couldn’t keep their eyes off of each other!” I laughed, “Yea. That was SO true! Come on, Da Ya! PLEASE!” “PLEASE,” the rest of them begged. Da Ya looked at us for a long time...thinking. “Aiyo, ok, all right,” she finally answered. We shrieked in happiness for her, but she went on, “But Gui Gui! YOU have to talk with Wang Zi, too.” Xiao Jie them STARED at me, waiting for any answer... “Alright!” I finally said, “Da Ya, you got yourself a deal.” Then we hugged each other good-bye, and went home.
When I got home, I opened the door, and saw Grandma sitting at the sofa. I threw my bag into the corner, and ran over to her. “Grandma!” I exclaimed as I hugged her. She placed at hand at my back, and gently patted it. “Grandma,” I repeated, “what are you doing here?” She laughed, “No one ever made it a law that I couldn’t visit my grand daughter.” I smiled, “Aw, I missed you SO much! When I first opened the door and saw you, I thought I was dreaming, but I didn’t want you to disappear, so I ran to you.” Just as I finished saying that, Ma and Pa walked through the door. “Hello Ma,” I greeted, “Hello Pa.” They smiled at me, as I went on, “Is it okay if I go upstairs?” “Sure,” Ma answered, “We don’t mind.” “Xie xie,” I thanked them, then Grandma and I went upstairs.
