“I am always dress in such a way. Anyway, it’s four in the morning, Master Chun. Most decent people are in bed by now.” Reproof lingered in his cultured tone.
“Not true. You are one of the most decent persons I know but you have not gone to bed.” Pleased with his own logic, Chun made his way to the hallway. Even he was so full to the rim of vomiting with Jiro’s best brandy, he was still capable of concise thinking.
Sheng Chuan set the tray with a glass of warm milk aside and assisted Chun to remove his long winter coat. It was getting colder at night in Taipei during the time of the year.
“It was my tradition to wait up for you, Master Chun.”
Chun slung an arm over Sheng Chuan’s thin shoulders. “Yes, yes, I know but both of us are too old already for this tradition to go on.”
Sheng Chuan’s disengaged himself. “Let me escort you to bed, Young Master.”
Chun waved him off. “No, no, you go to bed. I need some drink to calm my nerves. Something strong to make me fall into a deep and dreamless sleep.”
‘Or at least, sweet dream rather than perverted ones that had haunted me for the last fortnight. Between perverted image of my naïve, untouched wife and nightmares of fight with Alexander, I can’t even have a good sleep.’
A week ago, one night his body had grown restless and hungry. And his treacherous mind had filled with the most awful of images. He had watched it floating near the ceiling and he felt almost real, his body naked moving over a lithe female form; his hands stroking and squeezing warm flesh. The delectable tangle of arms and legs, the musky scent of two bodies in love, it had all been there, hot and vivid in his mind. And then he shifted perhaps to kiss the woman’s ear. First appeared a thick brownish hair, soft curls tickled his chest and then he moved even farther and he saw her. It was Ella. He awakened in an instant, sat upright in bed and shaken from the horror of pervert dream of his prim wife. It had been the most vivid erotic dream he had ever experienced.
And his very first worst nightmare. He had felt frantically around his sheets with one of his hands and terrified that he had found the proof of passion. May Lord help him, he had actually ejaculated while dreaming of his naïve and virgin wife. And he had stayed up most night to avoid recurrence of the same dream.
He had attempted to tire himself with all kinds of exhaustive activities including riding, basketball, kendo, kickboxing and work late, in the hope that weariness would cause him to drop into a restful sleep. Unfortunately, he never succeeded.
Worst still, he can’t sleep at all. As he has to deal with sleepless nights, his wife had begun to bloom before his shocking eyes. Dressed fashionably, groomed to be more elegant and sophiscated. She appeared to his tired brain as alluring as the mystic siren of ancient Greek.
He heaved a sigh. All he wanted from life were simple joys: work, wine and women. Yet he was married to a woman who thought only the welfare of strangers and had no interest in enjoying life with pleasure.
Chun turned his gaze to his impassive butler. “Sheng Chuan, do you ever laugh?”
“Of course, Master Chun. Quite often.” The butler led Chun’s by the arm to his room. “But I was trained to hold back the laughter until you left the room.”
“I’m glad ….” Chun halted, one foot on the step. “It was a joke, right?”
“A small one, Master Chun. Shall I tell another one?”
“Can’t believe you tried to tell me a joke, Sheng Chuan. You are awesome.”
“Thank you, Master Chun. You should proceed to your bedroom now. Young Mistress had been worried about you.”
Chun’s grin disappeared instantly. His freedom was gone. He would not be able to seek any enjoyment from life without the nagging thought that Ella would be unhappy.
Although he told himself there were no reason why he should care how she feels, he couldn’t erased the image of her face change from breathless admiration to condemnation. And for some reason, he seems can’t understand, he wanted all her admiration directed to him only.
He had to admit that she was a passionate woman; he had seen it in her eyes and tasted it on her lips. ‘But it was an innocent passion, chaste and pure. I doubt her reaction was solely for me alone. If any other man had a chance to kiss her, she would have responded the same sensual way.’
The thought hurt like constant stab of knife in his heart. Chun freed himself from the butler and headed to the study. “I need another drink.”
Sheng Chuan sighed and retrieved his tray. He followed Chun to the study and placed the glass of milk beside the brandy decanter.
Chun ignored the milk and moved to switch on the table lamp. He noticed there were something different with the study but could not be sure. Chun’s left foot crunched on something on the carpet. He picked it up and held it toward the light. Creamy white with a touch of blue, the thin sliver gleamed with the unmistakable texture of fine porcelain. Before he could ask anything, Sheng Chuan plucked the shard from his hand and left the room with a murmured goodnight. Chun stared at the close door. He searched the floor for other pieces of porcelain but none came into view.
Dizzy from bending, he straightened and moved to the side board which stored the alcohol drinks. He sighed and pushed the glass of milk aside.
Actually he was bored. Nothing amused him anymore. While he tried to tell himself it was because he had been denied his routine activities, he knew it was untrue. In fact, his restlessness had been there for as long as he could remember. He had managed to suppress but now the darkness had been awakened by dreams of Ella, half naked, sensual mouth tempting him, her arms clasping him closer as she ……. .
“Oh gosh I need a drink.” Chun poured himself a measured of brandy. Silently toasted to the casinos and the women of his past and down the brandy in one gulp. Now he was left alone with a wife he could never touch. “Hahahaha, this is the payback for being a playboy.” Then he loosened his shirt until it hung open and he could once again breathe.
He poured himself another drink and crossed to his favourite chair. He dropped onto the chair with a sigh. Unfortunately, he ended up on the floor. He lay there staring at the ceiling, as the brandy in his hand soaked the carpet. He was drunk but not that drunk!
He lifted his head to examine his chair with suspicion. Chun liked it because it was ergonomic with its high back, it was the most comfortable and good for posture during long hour usage.
“What the hell?” he muttered to himself and sat upright. Bleary-eyed, he found the arms were missing. “What happened to you?” he asked the chair ironically and climbed to his feet. He was still examining the broken chair when Ella came in.
She appeared looked nothing at all the half nude woman who had visited his dreams every night. Instead he could detect the lace nightgown he had purchased for her during their first shopping spree behind a nightrobe that trailed to the floor. He remembered how devilishly thin the lingerie and had thought to tease her into a reaction but Ella had been too busy with her charity work to pay attention to the intention. She added injury to the contrary by covering the expensive piece with a monstrous nightrobe, which to Chun only could be owned by Mrs. Lin. With her in sight, he groaned which he told himself that it was a sigh of relief.
Her frantic gaze drifted from him to the chair and back, stopped to note his undone shirt. Her cheeks flushed warmly. “I am sorry to interrupt maybe we could talk tomorrow.” She turned to the door to leave.
“Hold on there, what happened to my chair?”
She stopped at the door way and turned, “umm that.” The light from the hallway made her silhouette as alive and warm as a fire which flaunted her beautiful curves.
‘I should send her away now before my growing lust take control of me.’
Yet he found himself asked her to take the chair opposite his. “Please a take seat just hopes that one was not broken too.”
Ella stood still. “No its just that one pray that it was not your favourite.” She bit her lip and stared at him for confirmation.
Chun was too fascinated with the sight of her white teeth biting the lower lip to do more than nod. He burned at the sight. He wanted to ease the nervousness and nursed the wounded lip with a kiss. He wanted to find her curves, hidden under those frustrating material and caress her into mindless pleasure.
Unfortunately, it was not to be. Although Ella wanted his money but she didn’t want anything to do with him. She had made her terms and conditions for their marriage outright clear. In her own way, she was the same like the polite society, accepted him only for the sake of his wealth. The thought troubled him and sparked flame of discontentment.
She peered at the chair to be assured of the damage herself. “Well, Sheng Chuan said it cannot be fixed anymore. So what do you think?”
Chun examined the damage with a heavy heart. “It was ruined can’t be help.”
“Umm we will buy another one for you.”
“Of course,” he nodded. ‘Wonder you will replace me that easily once the one year is up.’
She rewarded him with an innocent and sweet smile that caused his pants to tighten a little more. He ground his teeth into a fake smile to cover his discomfort. ‘For the rest my life, I am definitely doomed to suffer such torments of this prim woman.’
“Chun, I came to talk about the chair and … another matter.” Ella walked toward the closest chair, the multi folds of her robe flowing like water over a statue, at the same time hid and emphasized the curves beneath. With each step, the outline of her leg would appear long and slender against the white fabric before melting back into the obscurity of the graceful folds.
Chun watched as she took her seat and arranged the folds to fall neatly on the floor. He managed to sit in his chair without falling onto the floor. ‘Oh gosh what am I thinking? She is in my care and trust. I had made a promise and I will keep it or die.’
Oblivious to Chun’s inner struggles, Ella smiled with glitters in the eyes. “Aunt Polly, Aaron and me went to the National Central Library today.”
“Oh?” The ‘oh’ sounded like the warbled cry of some lovesick canary. Chun scowled and hoped she had not noticed.
“Do you remember when you agreed that I can hire some new servants?” She dragged her chair to face him more directly. Her action caused the chair leg caught at the folds of her gown, and for an instant, one nicely sculptured hip was outlined in a stark moment.
Chun clamped his sweaty hands onto his knees, beads of sweat gathered on the lip and brows. Unperturbed, Ella perched innocently on her seat. The layers of material drifted back into a sea of folds, once again concealed all. Chun swallowed twice before he could even open his mouth to speak. “Well?” he asked. “Did you hire anyone?”
“Not quite. It was more of a purchase.”
Chun looked confused. “Actually, Alexander did the purchasing. I would not have approved but that abusive man refused to release the boy without ….”
“Alexander?” In the dim light, Chun thought he detected a faint blush on her cheeks.
“He was outside the library. We met him by chance.”
‘Alexander. At a library. And my naïve wife here, defending the bastard.’
“My cousin has never been near a library in a day of his life.”
She raised her brows. “Well, he was there today. We were lucky to bump into him though. Aaron didn’t want to fight but ….”
“Hold it.” Chun massaged his temple where it started to throb. “Please start from the beginning and everything, okay? Not here and there. It is confusing.”
So Ella started with her story from the point they reached the library on Zhongsan South Road. Chun watched, mesmerized, as her lips formed each word. He liked the way she spoke, so firmly and matter-of-factly. ‘My pragmatic Ella. Hmm. Where on earth had she gotten such a sensual mouth?’ With much efforts, he had to make himself focus on what she had to say.
“Then a fight started between the old bully and Aaron.”
‘Are my alcohol numbed ears had misheard that information.’
“All this happened in front of the library? In Zhongsan South Road?”
She suddenly became nervous and started to fidget with her fingers.
“Damn it, Pinky Polly is supposed to prevent all these from happening. And that Aaron, I am going to give him a piece of my mind. He is a fool.”
Ella’s eyes enlarged. “Aaron tried to solve matter but Alexander interrupted.” She faltered and frowned.
“I am sure he did,” Chun retorted.
“Then the bully knocked Aaron down.”
He closed his eyes for a moment and imagined Alexander’s amusement. “Who, besides Alexander, witnessed this scene?”
“Aunt Polly said she spotted Mrs. Charlene Choi.”
“Don’t think about it, the matter will be all over Taipei before dawn. That woman is a known rumour monger.” He rubbed his throat to smooth down the brandy threatening to come out due to his anxiousness.
Ella folded her hands in her lap, distracted him a moment. Her slender and white hands nestled in the gathered material. He wanted to be a cat and curled in those folds. He wanted to ……. .
“Err, there is more,” she continued. “I hit him.”
Chun blinked. “Who?”
“The bully. But only once,” she said with much regret. “I should have followed with a blow on the nose but I didn’t think of it at that time.”
“Oh my gosh.” Chun’s head began to throb again. “Oh my gosh. You hit a bully in front of the library.”
“Luckily Alexander was there. He dispensed with the bully. It could have been worse.”
“How?”
Ella flushed, the rosy colour spread across her cheeks to her forehead. “That man could have pressed charges. Aaron did hit him first but Alexander paid him off.” She sighed. “I should have thought of that myself but I didn’t. I was too angry at that time.” Her dark gaze settled on him. “So your cousin was not to blame for what happened.”
‘The hell he wasn’t. He had stood aside and waited until the scene attracted attention before he came to rescue the damsel in distress.’
Ella leaned forward, her gown smoothed across her breasts as lovingly as any hand. “Chun, I am sorry I lost my temper but if you have seen him. You will understand. The bruises and the burns on his body.” Tears threatened in her dark brown eyes.
“Alexander?” Chun asked, astounded.
“No! The pitiful boy we saved from the bully. That is what I wanted to discuss with you. And your favourite chair.” She murmured and took a deep breath. “Well, Xiao Hei stunk, so we needed to give a bath, and ….”
“Now, now. Who is Xiao Hei?”
Ella sighed with agitation. “That is the boy’s name. I know it is not a good name but it rather suit him at that time. I have never seen a child that needed a bath so badly since my days in America.”
Chun looked at his armless chair. “I assume he disagreed with your intention to give him a bath so he broke my chair.”
“He didn’t break your chair, but ….” Her gaze drifted toward the sideboard where his porcelain vase was. An empty space loomed that area. “He was very sorry about your vase.”
Chun hissed.
“He accidentally knocked down the vase and he was afraid Mrs. Lin would punish him so he decided to run. We attempted to catch him but he was so swift so we sought Calvin’s help.”
Chun tried to straighten in the chair but it was impossible without the arms. “So Calvin broke the chair in his attempt to catch that brat?” Chun said through gritted teeth.
A faint frown curved her sensual lips. “Calvin tripped and crashed into the chair. Xiao Hei took the chance to sneak into the kitchen and the cook was not happy.”
Although his temper was not calm, he managed to say in a pleasant manner, “we do not have a cook, my love. We have a chef. Master Yan will be very upset to hear you call him a cook.”
She sniffed. “He won’t be able to hear what I call him anymore. That man was rude to Xiao Hei and called him names.” She frowned. “He thought I don’t understand Cantonese.”
“Are you trying to tell me Master Yan quit?” Chun asked calmly, mind on the hardship he had to endure for him to woo Master Yan to work for him. A kind of revenge plan he cooked up to snatch Master Yan from Mrs. Gillian Chung, a leading voice who loved to stir up gossips about his mother.
“Who said he quit, I fired him.”
“I beg your pardon?”
She squeezed her eyes at his roar. “Oh Chun, I had to.”
“Ella! You are not supposed to fire my servants without my consent.”
“He did not know how to handle children. He used vulgar language.”
“Do you think that is important in a chef?” he queried, his anger suspended in disbelief.
“Umm actually, it is to me.” She hesitated before she continued, “I assume I should tell you about the kitchen.”
“Let me guess,” Chun snapped. “That kid accidentally burnt down my kitchen.”
Ignorance to his sarcasm, she chuckled. “Nothing that serious, Xiao Hei wanted to get something from the top level of the kitchen cabinet and he broke the shelves when he tried to climb the cabinet. He was being naughty. Calvin said it can be fixed within a few days.”
Before Chun could open his mouth, Ella continued, “Chun, Xiao Hei is a pitiful and good boy. He needs attention. Children left alone without anyone to care for them tend to find ways to get the attention they crave.”
Looking at Ella’s glowing expression, Chun pictured the child to be sweet and adorable; innocent with angelic face all hiding the evil spirit of a devil.
‘Ah my naïve and tender heart wife definitely fall prey to such people. Even Alexander received her attention. She shows her affection to everyone except me. Urghh.’
“We will send the child to the orphanage. You should know which one is suitable for him.” He was aware of her sad gaze, “I will contribute to the orphanage that he would go to ensure he receives the best care. Ella, I cannot allow him to stay.”
“You won’t be that cruel, are you?” she was disappointed.
“Have you forgotten our situation, Ella? We still have one year trial of marriage which we don’t know will work or not.”
Ella stood with her hands on her hips. “I know what situation we are in. Ours is a marriage of convenience. I am not bound by your wishes and vise versa.”
Chun also stood and crossed the space that separated them. “If I am not bound by your wishes, then I will have you in my bed tonight.”
She gasped with her hand unconsciously clutched the robe protectively to the throat.
“You think too highly of me, don’t you? You disallow me the mistress while you walk into my study dressing like …… .” He stopped himself realized she was actually fully covered head to toe in the oversize robe. “Ella, I hope you do not forget I am a man.”
Ella responded in a low voice, “It never slipped my mind.”
For a glance, he sensed a flicker of raw passion in her eyes and his heart thumped to a halt. But she quickly avoided his eyes, her thick lashes casting shadows across her cheeks. “I should not have come in, I only wanted to tell you what happened this afternoon and to discuss with you about Xiao Hei. Whatever your decision is, I cannot stand to send the child to the orphanage.”
“I am just worried that the executors will hear tales of this afternoon. This will cause exactly the sort of gossip we cannot afford. I already warned you not to be too obsessed with your projects, Ella.”
“If you see the bruises on the boy …… .”
“Fine, I will make a deal with you, honey.” He caught her wrist and pulled her toward him until he could look into her dark brown eyes. “If you wish to add more condition to our agreement, I will also do the same.”
She returned his gaze without flinching. The light cast the graceful line of her throat and warmed the curve of her cheek. “I will keep the child, I will pay whatever price you demand.”
With those few words, she placed Chun back where he belonged, the heartless He-Devil.
‘Isn’t that who I am? I am not now nor have I ever been a good man.’ “Okay, what are you paying me with?”
She eyed him nervously, “I have no idea what you …. “ She paused, her cheeks pink in colour. Slowly, ever so carefully, she placed her palm on Chun’s chest.
His skin burned where each of her fingertips rested. Chun shut his eyes and willed himself to continue the halt breathing as she slowly slid her hand down his chest. ‘Oh my what is she going to do to me?’
Her hand stopped and lingered at his stomach as light as the brush of a feather. Breathing in difficulty, he opened his eyes.
Ella stared up at him, her mouth parted, her face crimson red, her eyes daze. “I will pay you with a kiss.”
‘I want more than a kiss. But for now, I would take whatever she had to offer. Take it and use it to end some of my frustration, quench my insatiable lust.’
Without giving her time to reconsider, Chun embraced her and kissed her just the way he had kissed her in his dreams every night since their marriage. He covered her mouth with his and devoured her like a starved man given a sumptuous meal. His hand snaked into the folds of her nightrobe and found the lithe curves below, molded her to him, rubbed against her so she could feel how he wanted her and desired her.
As his hands curved about her, his mouth plundered hers, her stiffness melt, she moaned and gave in, her hands more than demanding with passion that matched his.
He kissed her until she lay limp and breathless in his arms. Chun with the last stand of control he possessed, he released her and stumbled away. Ella leaned against the back of the chair for support.
Still out of breath, she looked at him with eyes that sparked with anger. “Now, my debt settled, Xiao Hei will stay.”
‘How could she reject me when she is quivering from my touch?’
Chun turned away, his heart ached as if stabbed with a knife. Attempted to control his thudding heart, he sank into his chair. “Your payment just started, my love. You will have to pay the interest for each and every day that boy is in this house.”
“Every day?” Ella stunned one hand on her cheek, her voice quivered.
Chun didn’t trust himself to respond. He just stared at her, stared at the white, smooth skin of her neck, at the rounded curve of her breasts and at the length of her legs, traced in the folds of her robe. “There is no backing out now, Ella. You are mine to kiss whenever and wherever I desire.”
Her eyes sparked with anger again. “You complaining about your cousin, Alexander is way a gentleman than you.”
‘To hell with that Alexander. Just that he used some money and he came out clean while I, Wu Chun, would be forced to behave to satisfy my naïve wife. I might as well give up this inheritance and enjoy my old life whether I will be ruined or not. Alexander will be very happy to access my fortune.’
Definitely Chun could not because he still had his pride. And he had Ella to himself for the whole year to come. “Yet to see, you know nothing of my cousin, Ella.”
“You are drunk. I will talk to you in the morning, when you are more sober.” Ella gave an exasperated sigh and turned toward the door. She reached the door and yanked it open, the light from the hallway sneaked in. For a millisecond, the light revealed her legs and the juncture between her thighs. Chun’s heart halted. ‘Did this woman have any idea what she can do to a man? No, she didn’t.’ Chun told himself grimly. It was yet another problem married to a virtuous woman.
Ella left without a backward glance. The tension dissipated as the door close. Chun slumped in his broken chair and stared at the ceiling to let his heart resume to normal beat.
His only hope was to convince Ell that he was worth her attention. Yet how could he manage such a transformation when he had just proved to her, he was a devil. He massaged his temple and cursed his impatient temper and wild passion for that woman.
However, he was not totally regretted the event of the evening. Ella had agreed to let him kiss her every day. A slow smile curved his mouth. “Yes, every single day she would submit to my embrace, chaste though it would be. It is a first step. Hahahahha.”
Suddenly, the future seemed brighter. Humming softly, he stood to pour himself a glass of drink for the success.
‘I have to do something about Alexander and his plan.’ It was barely two weeks after the wedding and he had already involved Ella in a potential scandal. Ella might wish to believe Alexander was as innocent as a kitten but Chun knew otherwise. Alexander never did anything without reason and benefit.
As surprising as it would be to the society and everyone who knew Chun, his life was about to change. He was about to change. He was about to turn into the most devoted husband of the year.
