Chapter 9

Chapter Nine

Taipei 11 October 2009

“Angela has a cousin,” Chun informed.

Chun had intended to tell his friends all the details after he and Ella had visited the lawyers with their proof of marriage. Unfortunately, the rumours about him had been spread all over Taipei except that the paparazzi have not got their hands on the juicy gossips. He felt he has to stop the rumours fast. Besides marriage, the other condition of the will was to stay away from scandal for a year to inherit the fortune. With Angela to spread such rumours, he was afraid of the problem arise thereon. Scandal will not be the thing for him now.

Aaron scratched the not itchy head of his and wondered aloud. “Weird, I can’t remember Angela had a cousin. Well, sometimes we also do not know all our cousins, right? Just the other day, I met a man that claimed to be my cousin from Tainan. I thought he was kind of familiar and…..”

“Aaron, we understand what you mean,” Jiro interrupted his blabbing.

Aaron started again, “if my memory did not fail me, the only cousin Angela has that we know is Fearful Ella. Oh my ..God, Chun you……” His voice trailed off with eyes widened.

“You guessed right,” Chun grimly replied.

“Could not be. You couldn’t wed the Fearful Ella!”

“Yes I married Ella Chen,” Chun confirmed icily. He felt irritated to hear Aaron called his wife ‘Fearful Ella’ though he had called her the same from time to time.

Aaron blushed. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to call her that. She is not that fearful unless you tried to go near her Angela. I remembered she wanted to eat me up when I tried to talk to Angela at an opening ceremony. She…”

“Aaron!” Jiro had to silent that blabbing man again. “You talked too much, as usual.” Jiro turned to Chun for him to continue. “Maybe you would like to explain this interesting part to us, er .. Chun.”

Chun stood up and ventured to the windows looking 38 floors down. “I married Ella Chen and there is nothing to be explained about. And she is a granddaughter of late Harold Zhang and that is enough.”

“At her age, she must be desperate to get married. Wow, she sure lucky to grab you. Hahahaha.” Aaron with his dumb jokes.

‘Not desperate enough to agree to marry me without half of my fortune.’ Chun thought grimly looking out to the clear blue sky above. “Ella has never been desperate before in her life.”

“I find her someone with confident and determination,” Jiro stated.

Aaron shuddered and cocked a brow at Chun. “One of those confident and aggressive women, eh? Perhaps she is meant for you. You always have a way with women.”

“Jeez. No.” Despite that a flash of weird feeling attacked him in his reverie of kissing Ella. He could still feel the heat of her mouth closed to his. He shook off the feeling and slumped back to his chair. His wife’s no nonsense exterior did conflict with her natural passionate interior. He was unsure why the knowledge depressed him.

Jiro regarded Chun with a heavy lid gaze. “Why don’t you tell us about your mysterious Ella, so we could know her better?”

Chun took a deep breath. “Ella’s mother is Angela’s paternal aunt. Her mom was also a co-heir of Zhang Inc. Her parents left for America after her mom had a disagreement with Angela’s grandparents. They never returned.”

Aaron asked in disbelief, “Not even when they are supposed to inherit part of Zhang Inc?”

“She told me she was born Ella Zhang but changed her name to Ella Chen after her parents’ death. She has document to prove she is a Zhang.” Chun added.

“Phew, that was close isn’t it? Chun’s style.” Jiro lips escaped a silent whistle.

Aaron absently scratched his head again. “Well, to me this is sure complicated. Pray that those serious executors and lawyers put in charge of the funds would buy this.”

“They have to,” Chun said. He forced himself not to think of the possibilities yet.

“Chun, I have the gut feeling that this is fate. Your marriage to Ella was fated. Maybe Ella is the better choice of the two.”

“The Fearful Ella could be better than Angela Zhang?” shouted Aaron. He caught Jiro’s warning glare and added softly, “er.. Chun what are you going to do now?”

Chun glanced at his Patek Phillipe. “I will be meeting the lawyers at 2 p.m. today. This morning I intended to visit Jiro to discuss what I should tell those nosy men. Mr. Tsai is a difficult old fool and I didn’t want to shock him with this complication.”

Aaron looked disgusted. “Chun is right, Jiro. I have met them with Chun last month. You would not stand their seriousness and unreasonable attitude. I can’t swallow my dinner that day after the meeting.”

“Chun, give them the fact,” Jiro advised.

“About Angela too?”

“More so about Angela. At least the executors will know about her true self. Maybe they will understand she is not fit to be your wife. Even if they don’t want to recognize you and Ella’s marriage, they won’t force you to have her.”

Chun leaned his head on the head rest of the ergonomic chair staring at the white plaster ceiling. He could never understand why his grandfather had found such disapproving, difficult and old men as executors of the will. He had met them twice and both meetings had left him devastated being treated like a criminal at trial in a high court. “Haiz, pray everything will be fine.”

Jiro lifted a curious brow. “What will you do if they are to insist on the will?”

“I will …” Chun trailed off. Reality hit him hard, he hadn’t thought about the matter on hand at all, if the plan failed. ‘What would I do?’

As the series of events having developed until this point of no return, he decided to take what may come his way. His inheritance had almost changed the way people looked and expected of him in the high society. Now, people wanted him to honour their parties and social gatherings. Suddenly, he turned into the most eligible and perfect bachelor in Taipei or might as well said in Taiwan. As the richest man in Taiwan, overnight he became worthy to the high society. They forget the way they insulted him and ill treated him because of his mother’s background and status. If not for his grandfather and those nosy servants, he could not make it to today after his parents death. Luckily, he always has Jiro and Aaron by his side for support and care other than his closest relative, Grandpa.

The first two months were great with all the attentions people given him. All the money in the world at his disposal and spending; he could do anything and nobody would care anymore. Gradually he hated all these and life seems meaningless.

Thanks to his grandfather’s ridicule will, other than marriage he has to put up with those pretenders and fakes he disgusted so much. ‘To be in the high society without scandal for a year. Great that is great. Can’t wait to kick those smiling *asses* in their butts.’

Chun faced Jiro’s curious stare. “Well, I and Ella will play house and live a boring social life for a year starting today. It’s just that easy.”

“Are you sure, she is Fearful…”Aaron managed to clam his stupid mouth and blushed. “Wish you luck, I don’t think it’s that easy.”

Chun lamented, “She was used to those parties when accompanied Angela isn’t it? She will be fine.”

“I think Aaron may be right this round,” Jiro supported Aaron. “Your beloved wife knows how to fend off those wolves but she may know nothing about social etiquette, conversation and expected behaviour. You should know how those masked pretenders love to gossip and snob. She would not be hiding behind Angela anymore like she used to as a personal maid.”

“I heard she is kind of a social worker or charitable fund organizer. They said something about that. I can’t seem to remember.” Aaron pressured his brain for information.

“She is with Taipei International Women’s Club and a die hard charity volunteer. She get involved with fund raising activities,” Chun supplied the details.

Aaron snapped his fingers, “ah yes. Danson’s sister, Amelia Tang told me about it. You remember Amelia, she is close to Angela. She is the worst gossipmonger around. Even Danson can’t stand his own sister. Once Amelia…..”

“Where are you heading to, Aaron?” Jiro irritated by Aaron’s blabbering.

Aaron was offended though. “I am going to that, Jiro. Well, Amelia said Angela always complain Fearful E….” Damn that Aaron to slip his tongue again. One day he is going to get it from Chun. Hahahaha.

He gave an apologetic glance at Chun. “I mean Mrs. Wu, she was always disappeared for hours on end. At times came home dirty and stink like wandering squatters. It seems that she scouted the back alleys and vacant houses till late at nights. Sometimes she also didn’t go home for days. Chun, think about it, OK. We can’t keep the paparazzi at bay for too long. The worst would be gossipmongers’ cruel mouths, if she continues with the stunts.”

“Rubbish, Aaron,” Chun grunted.

“I think you should ask her to stop,” Aaron reasoned. “As you know, you cannot afford scandal. And you wouldn’t know what the executors think about all these.”

Ella’s words played on Chun’s mind ‘Whatever, I work to better the position of those who are affected by the cruel hand of poverty and society such as homeless, unwed mothers and handicapped children.’

“In what ways could Ella’s involvement in charity create scandals? All those high society wives have their own charities too. Your aunt and Jiro’s aunts also sponsored almost half of the charity funds in Taiwan.”

“True Chun but they give money not like your beloved wife,” Jiro pointed out the crucial. “Aaron might be right this time a round which I hate to admit. Ella’s too good intention and approach may cause rumour. Maybe you could have a good talk with her. Ask her to be more discreet in whatever she is doing or going to do.”

“Yes, that’s it, she has to be more discreet in her weird adventures,” Aaron agreed wholeheartedly.

“Ella is very dedicated to her charity works.” Chun shifted uncomfortably in his chair. With his very little knowledge about Ella, he already doubted the possibility of Ella to take neither direct instruction nor any hint from him. Although they have only been married for about 10 hours only, he was not very happy on his discovery. Ella was a woman with very firm determination and dedication which he witnessed from the few kisses they shared either passionately or none at all. He wouldn’t be surprised if she was to use all her portion of the allowance on the charity, maybe she will use half of his fortune if he was to share with her.

“Maybe she can change to another charity organization that meets at other part of Taipei,” Aaron suggested. Chun gave him an emotionless stare which he sympathized. “I don’t know I just want to help. Women are troubles, I could see that.’

Jiro warned, “There is still Angela. I am very sure she will not be happy with the marriage and her backfired plan.”

Aaron chirped, “You will be worried if you see her smug grin last night, Chun. Gossips emerged from her like the LED boards along the highways flashing the information to the drivers.”

“I am more worried about Alexander than Angela. He will not lay low until he gets what he wants.” Chun was worried.

Jiro looked directly at Chun with intensity, “we can find a champion for our Ella.”

“You mean someone well received by the high society and popular to support and guide her. Someone who can prepare her to face the high society as the new Mrs. Wu?” Aaron echoed.

“Yes, Ella needs someone to help her to smooth her entry into the high society and to be accepted by those snobs though not all of them are anyway. Someone who has her interests at hearts and like her for what she is.” Jiro continued.

“I can do that,” Chun volunteered.

Jiro was amused with Chun. “Hah, you? For crying out loud, you can’t even take care of your own business. You have not reached that level yet. Furthermore you loathe the high society.”

Jiro was damned right on that matter. Irritated as he was, he was not the best choice to guide Ella on the perils of polite society. For years he had tried to avoid that path much to his grandfather’s disapproval.

Aaron offered, “Maybe I could ask my mom for help.”

Jiro disagreed. “Sorry Aaron. I respect your mom very much but no offence. I don’t trust her not to leak the ‘plan’ to her friends though it may be unintentional.”

“Well, I agreed about my mom. I always assume that her unstoppable nagging and talking drove my dad to the grave. I still remember when my dad forgets to get her gift ………”

Aaron was interrupted by Jiro. “I think we need someone who understands the importance of privacy, discreet, well received and established with the social status. Someone elegance, we could trust, ………” He trailed off as if he already had someone in mind.

“You thought of someone suitable?” Chun was eager.

“She should be the person we are looking for but I hope we could persuade her,” Jiro informed.

“Who could she be?” Aaron was interested.
