“Call 911 right now!” Someone screamed out in fear amidst the chaos, as everyone scrambled for their lives. “Gosh, run for your lives, people!”
The fire was spreading extremely fast from one research laboratory to the next one – most of the chemicals being stored in these laboratories were flammable. However, the root of the blaze came from the basement below – a place where top-secret research experiments, which carried a certain amount of risks and dangers, took place. Just hours ago, a scientific study on the new treatment method for ‘dissociative identity disorder’ was being carried out in there – it was being tested upon one of the selected patients from the state’s mental hospital. However, it turned out that even the little dosage of chemicals was proven too lethal and strong for the human brain to absorb and react to.
“Ray…Raymond Lam!” She crawled out from under the metal table and waved away the smoke which was engulfing the entire laboratory already.
Rubbing her aching head, she slowly recalled the short-circuit which resulted in the explosion of the machines, throwing her off her feet before she woke up to find herself under the metal table. She wondered how long she had been lying unconscious. Coughing hard due to the smoke which was irritating and choking her breathing system, she continued searching for her fiancé whom was supposedly in charge of this experiment. Before the time of explosion, he was standing closest to the patient, and he would definitely be the one to have taken in the most impact. The last thing she could remember before she was knocked out was Raymond’s piercing scream of agony. She silently prayed that he would be safe and fine.
All of a sudden, someone grabbed her from behind, and covered her mouth with a strong, firm hand. She gasped in shock and tried to struggle free from the tight hold.
“Calm down, Myo.” A familiar voice spoke out into her ear. “It’s me.”
Myolie began to relax, as she turned her head around for a confirmation. Indeed, it was her fiancé, Raymond Lam…but it looked like he was in a really bad shape.
“Are you alright?” Raymond asked in a concerned tone, oblivious to his own bleeding injuries.
Myolie nodded her head with a deep frown, “I should be the one asking that question, Ray.” She then caught sight of a deep, gaping wound on his right forearm and attempted to reach out to examine the wound. “What-…”
“Don’t touch it!” Raymond instinctively withdrew it further from her reach, as his expression turned panicky and uneasy. “I…I’m fine. We need to get out of here immediately.”
Myolie was not at all suspicious about Raymond’s reaction. He quickly grabbed a cloth and tied it around the wound on his forearm, before shutting his eyes to say a quick prayer.
“Take the stairs.” Raymond said, as they checked that the elevator was not working already. “Walk fast, and don’t turn back.” He reminded Myolie as he allowed her to go first.
“Stay close to me.” Myolie grabbed hold onto his hand as she walked up the narrow flight of stairs first, afraid that she might lose him somewhere – that thought alone was really dreadful.
They arrived at the first level, and everywhere was in a total mess, and the place was virtually empty with multiple tiny fire spots. They immediately headed for the main entrance of the building, but discovered that it was stuck, and could not be opened.
“Damn it.” Raymond kicked the metal door in frustration. “How the hell are we going to get out of here?”
Myolie looked up at the ceiling, “We go up.”
“Alright…we-…” Raymond suddenly felt a strong and sharp sensation seemingly tearing his brain into two different parts in his head, as he collapsed and rolled on the ground in extreme agony.
Myolie rushed to his side, as she examined him closely, realizing that his face was turning very red. “Calm down, Raymond! Take in deep breaths slowly!”
He looked as if he was having a fit, as his pupils became dilated. His body could not stop trembling, before it came to an unexpected and abrupt end. He laid there motionless with his eyes remaining wide opened. This scene sent Myolie into frenzy, as she began checking for his pulse and heartbeat, and to her horror, there was no signs of life in him at all. Instantly, she positioned his body on the ground, and started to perform resuscitation on him.
“Oh man, wake up!” She pounded hard on his chest, as she desperately whispered under her breath.
Tears were threatening to stream down from her eyes, but she held it all back. Myolie had believed that Raymond was a very tough and determined man – he would not die so easily. She had known this side of him from day one, and this perception never changed at all right till this moment. He had once jokingly told her that he resembled a cat with nine lives.
“Wake up, you idiot!” She shrieked when ten minutes had passed but he was not responding to her resuscitation efforts at all.
At that moment, Raymond’s body started stirring slightly as he sucked in a deep breath, before starting to take in multiple short, rapid breaths. His eyes looked like they were in a daze. He then saw Myolie’s extremely relieved expression as she cupped his face in her hands.
“Thank God.” She pecked on his forehead for a long moment, as he felt that there were tears on her cheeks.
Smiling in reassurance, he got up and sunk his lips into hers for a kiss so wickedly sweet that it literally made her toes curl.
“I can never bear to leave you.” He gazed at her lovingly as he gently wiped away the dry tears on her face.
“What the hell happened just now?” Myolie examined Raymond’s injuries closely, but none of them looked life-threatening to her at all.
Soon, they heard a loud blast coming not far away from their position, and knew that the fire was coming their way already. Supporting Raymond up as he placed his arm over her back, they hurried towards the emergency exit where it would take them up to the rooftop of the building. As they were making their way there, Raymond could not help but have a creepy and uncomfortable feeling that someone seemed to be spying on him – watching his every move, every thought, every heartbeat……Turning around to check his surroundings, his eyes appeared shocked and horrified at his reflection in the glass window. Suddenly, the dizzying sensation hit him again as he could literally feel himself being separated into two different entities yet still being tightly bounded together at the same time.
“Ray…” Myolie felt his weight on her back increasing with each step, and turned to find Raymond seemingly in agony.
Raymond felt an invisible strong force trying to take over his senses and struggled to fight back hard against it. Clenching his fists tightly, he tried to conjure up many thoughts to keep his sanity and own mind intact. Raymond seemed to hear Myolie’s calls from a very far distance away, and her soothing tone was able to capture his soul back, as he eventually was in control of his mind again while turning to look at her with a weary smile.
“You…” She had a worried expression on her face. “Is there something wrong with you that you aren’t telling me?”
“Let’s hurry.” Raymond mumbled weakly. “We shall talk when we get out of here, okay?”
Myolie nodded as they used the emergency exit to go up to the rooftop. By then, there were fire engines, ambulances and the special operations forces dispatched by the police gathering outside the building.
============================================================
“There are two survivors on the rooftop, Sir!” An officer from the special operations forces informed his superior whom was in charge of the rescue works.
“Get the helicopter ready. We’ll take them by air.” He ordered in an authoritative tone, after concluding that the fire was too huge for them to use a long ladder to rescue both survivors down. He had to ensure their safety – especially when these two people up there were his best friends. “Brendan and Leona, follow me up to the helicopter later on.”
Soon enough, he had put on a helmet, and was attaching the safety hook around his waist as the helicopter remained up in the mid-air at a reasonable, safety level. Grabbing another safety hook in his hand, he leapt down from the helicopter, as his two subordinates slowly lowered him down to the rooftop of the building. He successfully touched down on the ground within less than ten minutes.
“Ron, Raymond’s injured. Take him up first.” Myolie said.
Raymond shook his head, “I’m feeling better already. Myo, you go first.”
Myolie was about to rebut when Ron had already attached the safety hook on her waist and pulled the strap around it before hooking it back onto him.
“I’ll be coming back soon, Ray.” Ron told his best pal, before giving the signal for his subordinates to haul both of them up to the helicopter.
Myolie did not take her gaze off Raymond, as his outline became blurrier and smaller with their distance lengthening. Ron had caught sight of her anxiety, and gave a small pat on the back to reassure her. At that moment, she saw another blur figure approaching Raymond from behind, and as she squinted to take a clearer look, she gasped in horror after realizing that it was the mental patient whom they were performing the trial experiment on earlier on. The patient definitely did not look like he was going to embrace Raymond…or anything close to that as he was clutching onto a huge object. It seemed as if Raymond had sensed another person’s presence as he spun around, but the person had lifted up the object and brought it down on Raymond, whom staggered a few steps backwards before falling onto the ground. But the person did not stop at all – and he kept hitting Raymond…as if it was a routine. Raymond seemed to be standing up, in preparation of a retaliation. And then, the most unexpected scene occurred…
“No!!!” Myolie cried out in a piercing scream, as she watched both of them erupted into flames after Raymond supposedly tried to set the assailant on fire.
Shortly after that, a loud explosion was heard as the flames blasted high up into the air, before engulfing the entire rooftop. Myolie immediately reached out to the safety hook and tried to get it off from her waist. It was a sign of desperation that she wanted to get down to save Raymond.
“You can’t do that, Myo!” Ron yelled out to her, as he restrained both of her hands, glaring in her face with his tear-stung eyes. “Raymond…”
“Shut up!” Myolie retorted as she shot him a defiant stare. “I told you to take him first. Why didn’t you listen to me?! Lower me down right now!”
Ron was equally upset and guilty but he took on Myolie’s tantrums without a complaint. No matter how she reprimanded and blamed him, he was adamant in not going down to check on Raymond’s condition – anyone in his position would be aware that there was no chance of survival in that huge blast. Soon enough, the entire building crumbled under the huge fire heat, and Ron saw the hopes in Myolie’s eyes came crushing down as well.
“We…we need to…find him, Ron…” Myolie tried to convince Ron, as they had climbed up safely into the helicopter.
Ron grabbed her by the arms, and stared down grimly at her – someone had to break this harsh truth to her, and he would rather be the one.
“Raymond…” Ron started to speak in a slightly trembling voice. “There’s no way he could have survived, Myolie.”
However, she was adamant in staying on even after the fire had been put out. All the burnt corpses had been identified shortly.
Except two – two missing corpses from the fire accident.
Raymond Lam and the mental patient being experimented upon were on the missing list.
