“Myolie, come over here.” The director of the psychiatry department called out to the female researcher whom was in the midst of arranging her documents.
She looked up and nodded. Removing her glasses, she proceeded to follow the director to his office.
“We’ve a new colleague joining us today.” The director opened the door to his office. “This is Dr. Sammul Chan. He’s a fresh graduate.”
Myolie was deeply attracted by the man’s beautiful features. She could see every line and curve on his perfect face, as sharp brows arched over the eyes that were a pale brown and searing with utmost intelligence and charisma. Sammul gave her a faint and polite smile as he extended his hand out for a firm shake.
“Nice to meet you…again, Dr. Wu.” Sammul spoke in a magnetic voice which seemed to strike deeply in her mind.
Myolie frowned as she tried to recall back, “Have we met before?”
“We certainly did.” Sammul chuckled. “It’s just that……you probably have forgotten about it already. But it’s okay. You’ll remember me again…one day.”
“Sure.” Myolie did not quite like the creepiness which he was giving her.
“Myolie, Sammul’s still new in this line.” The director went onto explain after the introduction. “Although you may have seen him over those interviews on the papers that he was the first person in the States to be able to complete the medical degree within a short span of two years, Sammul still lacks of some experience. I hope that you can be his mentor and guide him along.”
Myolie then started to remember that she had indeed come across his case while reading the newspapers some time ago. He must have been a genius, she thought. In some ways, he did remind her of Raymond…sadly.
“That will be my honor to be working with you, Dr. Wu.” Sammul gazed deeply in her eyes.
Myolie nodded her head with a smile. The director continued to explain their plans of a new collaboration research project with another university psychiatry research institute in New York on the ‘dissociative identity disorder’, and from what Myolie had observed, Sammul seemed to have a great interest in this area, thus the director delegated this important task to both Myolie and Sammul to be in charge of. This also meant that she might be leaving her hometown soon for New York City. The director then allowed them to leave and carry on their work, while Myolie proceeded to take Sammul around the research institution for a short tour. Soon, the knock-off time had arrived.
“Shall we have dinner together, Myolie?” Sammul asked. “If you don’t mind me calling you by your first name…”
“It’s perfectly fine.” Myolie smiled. “Yeah, let’s dine together.” She thought that it would be good for them to build up their partner relationship.

As they walked out of the building together, Myolie saw a familiar figure leaning against a car and seemingly waiting for someone. When the person saw her, he snapped out from his daze and stood upright, before his gaze fell upon the man walking beside her right now.
“So you got a date already?” Sammul questioned.
“Sorry about that. I guess I can’t have dinner with you today, Sammul.” Myolie apologized.
Sammul grinned, “It’s alright. Next time perhaps.”
“Next time then.” Myolie replied, before Sammul left in another direction, while she headed towards the man. “Why are you here today?” Her tone evidently sounded rather aloof and glum.
Ron did not mind her hostility at all. Even though it had been two years since Raymond’s passing on, he knew that she was still unable to walk out from that shadow, and neither could he as well. Sometimes, he wondered if he had made a wrong decision back then. But no matter if it was Raymond or Myolie, he did not wish for either of them to get hurt. He could not lose Raymond, his best friend since the days at the orphanage, but the more he could not afford to give up Myolie, the first lady whom had been in his heart all along.
“I just had something to tell you.” Ron said. “How about talking over dinner? I’m dead hungry after that awfully long meeting back at the station.”
Myolie did not object, and got into the passenger seat. Ron secretly heaved a sigh of relief as he took the driver’s seat, and the car sped off.
“Who’s that guy just now?” Ron had wanted to ask her this question after they hit the main road.
“A new colleague.” Myolie answered nonchalantly. “His name’s Sammul.”
“Sammul……” Ron mumbled under his breath as he racked his brains to recall where he had probably seen that man before, but nothing came to his mind. “He looks really familiar to me.” And he had wanted to add on ‘eerily familiar’, but he did not wish to scare Myolie further, and decided to shrug it off and put it at the back of his mind.
From afar, Sammul looked on as a sinister grin appeared across his face. His hand slowly reached up to his neck as it touched the long scar which was being hidden behind the collar of his long-sleeved shirt. Everything on him had been altered, except for this scar – it was a symbol of vengeance for him. Soon enough, his arch-nemesis would be hunting down for his whereabouts, because he knew that both of them had survived back then in the fateful explosion. The only difference between both of them was that……
He had chosen to embrace his new-found powers, while the other was covering up his tracks and gone into hiding, seemingly afraid of what these strange powers were capable of.

“Welcome!” A waiter chirped happily as the couple entered the Chinese restaurant located in the downtown area. “Oh it’s you! Boss, Ron and Myolie are here!”
Paul hurried out of the kitchen as he cleaned both hands on his apron, receiving both his daughter and Ron. “You’re here already?”
“Hi Uncle Paul.” Ron greeted with a bright smile, while Myolie mumbled ‘Dad’ sullenly as she took a seat near the far end of the restaurant.
“What’s up with her?” Paul whispered over to Ron.
Ron shrugged, “I guess she just doesn’t like my presence.”
“How can it be?” Paul comforted him with a pat on Ron’s back. “You’re the most obedient and nicest guy I’ve ever met.”
This compliment got a smile on Ron’s face. Indeed, Paul had always favored Ron over Raymond. Even though he never voiced out any objections against Myolie’s relationship with Raymond, he would much prefer Ron to be his son-in-law instead. Paul saw the latter as a more responsible and sensible man, while he thought of Raymond as being too ambitious and over-confident in himself, and thus he did not like the fact that Raymond was not a pretty down-to-earth person. However, he also was aware of how deep his daughter’s love for Raymond was, and felt saddened as well to watch her still suffering silently under the agony of losing her soon-to-be husband. Therefore, Paul had hoped that Ron could offer some solace and consolation towards Myolie – at least Ron’s qualities were on par with Raymond, weren’t they?
“I’ll get down to the dishes right now.” Ron told Paul. “How about having a chat with Myo? It’s a long time since both of you last talked.” With that, Ron took the apron from Paul and headed over to the kitchen.
Myolie had stayed away from home very often after that fateful incident, and Paul was aware that she was afraid it might trigger her unhappiness all over again, since Raymond used to live with them after they went steady. Therefore, during the past two years, they had minimal contact, and most of the time, it was Ron whom brought them together. She had known that her father did not have a good impression on her fiancé, and thus she found it difficult to relate her grief and sorrow to her father.
“How are you doing lately?” Paul took the seat across Myolie.
“I’m doing well.” Myolie answered. “I…I heard from Ron…that your rheumatism…”
“Oh,” Paul waved up his hand with a soft shrug. “It’s nothing. Just an old ailment.”
Myolie frowned in concern, “It’s still better to undergo a check-up. If I need to move to NY…”
“You’re moving to NY? Why is that so?” Paul exclaimed.
“Well, work…” Myolie answered. “We’re doing a new project on ‘dissociative identity disorder’…”
“Isn’t that what Raymond used to research and study on in the past?” Paul found the phrase all too familiar.
Myolie nodded as she added on softly, “I just wish to carry on his dream and hopefully fulfill it one day.”
Paul understood her words perfectly, and expressed his support as well – probably that could lessen her agony of missing Raymond in her life. Just then, Ron had appeared with a tray filled with dishes as he placed them on the table.
“These are all your favorites.” Paul looked over at Myolie and pointed out.
“What’s the occasion?” Myolie did not understand as Ron settled down beside her.
Ron chuckled softly, “Happy birthday.”
“I can’t believe that you’ve forgotten your own birthday, girl.” Paul laughed. “I bet only Ron takes the effort to remember this.”
Myolie looked over at Ron whom was smiling delightedly, and finally murmured, “Thanks, Ron.”

[NGH Hostel Quarters]
Ron stopped his car before the gates, before turning around to inform Myolie that she had arrived back, but only to find her soundly asleep. He gazed on at her peaceful look, before taking off his coat and placed it over her body. Getting down from the car, he slowly paced around the car as he patiently waited for her to be awake.
“Why didn’t you wake me up?” Ron heard Myolie’s voice as he looked up at her.
“It’s okay.” Ron replied, thinking that it was no big deal actually.
“Come on in. It’s cold outside here.” Myolie said.
It was probably the first time she had expressed her concern for him since two years ago. It made him reminisced about the days when even the slightest gesture of care from her could make him smile right from the bottom of his heart. Ron began wondering if these days would still exist now that there seemed to be an invisible barrier between both of them – Raymond’s death. Ron climbed back into the car, while Myolie was already sitting inside. She rubbed her hands together, before stealing a glance over at Ron. He had always been there for her, didn’t he? Always selflessly giving, and never asking for anything in return. She got to know Ron first, but fell in love with Raymond instead, after the latter was supposed to help his best friend go after the lady.
“Thanks for the birthday celebration tonight.” Myolie spoke first.
“What are friends for, Myo?” Ron chuckled, before getting serious. “I just want you to be happy, that’s all.”
She smiled, “I did enjoy myself tonight. Your culinary skills are great as usual. I guess whoever gets to be your girlfriend in future, she’ll be damn lucky.”
“I hope that you can be the one.” Ron suddenly confessed.
Myolie stared back at him, perplexed and clueless. Ron’s affection for her was pretty obvious from the start, but she chose to ignore them. She had thought that it was the best way for both of them, since she did not bear to hurt his feelings and then lose a good friend. She knew that Raymond’s death was purely an unfortunate accident, yet he was willing to take up all the blame for it, so that she could have a target of frustration to vent upon. Suddenly, Myolie saw the importance of Ron in her life, but still, she could not let go of Raymond so easily yet.
“Sorry Ron, but I prefer our present status quo now.” Myolie felt guilty.
Ron laughed forcefully, “That was just a joke only. Don’t take it to heart.” Just as Myolie was about to speak, Ron suddenly cut in, “It’s getting late. You better go in right now.”
Myolie nodded, and got down from the car, knowing that any additional word she said to him now was just simply redundant.
“Myo!” Ron called out as he hurried up to her. “Take this.” He gently draped the coat over her shoulders and made sure that it did not drop. Smiling at her as he wound his hand in her silken hair, “Goodnight, and don’t think too much.” With that, he turned and went back into his car, and left.
Myolie stood there. Many thoughts ran through her mind. Looking down at Ron’s coat, she could exactly still feel the warmth and love he had showered upon her. It was certainly the time to make a serious decision in her life. She realized that she could not drag on any longer.

[A Rural Part of Russia]
He curled up in a ball as the rain continued to pour down heavily, and it did not have any signs of stopping yet. Shivering from the extreme cold, he had been starving for the past week already. The food which he had begged from a few passers-by was being snatched away by the local gangsters ruling the streets. He felt exhausted but did not have the courage to sleep – in fact, he had not been sleeping during these two years, as drifting off to dreams was his most vulnerable state in his subconscious mind. He could only rest his eyes, but never going into the REM stage, which tended to tap into his long-term memory vault.
“Raymond Lam.” He heard someone hissing his name out.
His eyes shot wide open, as he got up immediately. His breathing became ragged and rapid, as he could feel the invisible force returning to cause a huge turmoil in his mind once again. He quickly reached to clutch tightly onto the ring hung on the necklace which was strung around his neck. He had always known that ‘it’ loved to sneak an attack upon him whenever he let his guard down a little.
“Don’t resist me, Raymond.” The voice continued to seduce and tempt him. “We belong together. We are one self.”
“No!!!” Raymond screamed out as he placed the ring near his forehead, and tried to focus on fighting back – throughout these years, he had realized that ‘memories’ was the only way to win this struggle every time, and the ring was the only memory left for he and his love. “I won’t let you take control of me.”
Raymond tried to stand up and saw a puddle of rainwater beside him. His reflection was smirking back at him while shaking his head.
“You’re being a complete, pathetic coward.” The reflection told him.
“I’ll destroy you one day. I swear.” Raymond glared down at himself in the water puddle.
“Unless you accept me, you’ll never be able to find the other man whom has the same infection as you.” His reflection whistled nonchalantly. “And you know, his powers are definitely a notch above yours because he’s the primary source while you’re the secondary one after being bitten on the forearm by him.”
Raymond stared at the scar marks on his forearm. He recalled how the patient had gotten out of control and went berserk, while he tried to restrain him back onto the operating chair, before he felt a huge current of electricity going through both of them and then, the last memory he had was the patient had sunk his teeth right into his forearm and then his piercing yelp of agony.
“Embrace me, Raymond Lam.” The eyes of the reflection started turning blood-red and completely devilish. “I can bring you a whole, new experience about this world.”
Raymond had to use all his mental strength as he turned away from the puddle of rainwater and placed the ring on his chest.
“I’ll never, ever succumb to being a monster freak.” Raymond hissed under his breath, as he tried to focus his thoughts on the only person whom could bring the inner peace in him at this moment.
Myolie…
