Chapter 4

The First Kill

He did not allow himself to stop at all. Having able to return to this place safely, he had not expected for anything more, much less being able to meet her once again – and so coincidentally in New York City. His mind had been thrown into a state of confusion and loss as he struggled against his strong desire to turn back and find her – to look at her…touch her…kiss her…tell her how badly he had missed her…

No, he could not do that now. He must not soften his stand, and return to her side. No matter what was going to happen in future, they could never be together again. He carried a ‘time-bomb’ inside him, and he had absolutely no idea when this ‘other part of him’ would eventually take over his sanity one day. By then, he probably would not have recognized her anymore, and her life might be in grave danger staying by his side. He would never allow that to happen. The thought of this just made him hasten his pace, before he had to stop before a busy traffic junction. He turned back and checked – there was no sight of her being nearby. As if it had already become a habit for him, his hand moved up near his neck area as it rested upon his chest – where their engagement ring was held at. Every time he did this, he felt like she was just living within him…breathing inside his heart…

At that moment, he felt a firm tap on his back. Could it be her? Taking in a deep breath, he prepared himself mentally to face her, but an extremely crestfallen expression was written all over him when the result had turned out otherwise.

“I don’t feel really welcomed, do I?” She asked him as the traffic-light signal turned green and the pedestrians started crossing, and so did they.

He put on a reluctant smile as he mumbled, “I didn’t expect you to be this early, Leila.”

“Me neither. The taxi which I just sat in was driving through the streets at an insanely fast speed. I swore I almost had a heart attack during the ride.” Leila proclaimed in an exaggerated tone, while retrieving a piece of paper from her pocket. “Alright, we need to search for the correct address, Ray.”

Raymond took over the paper, before trying to figure out the location of the person whom he was looking for on the top of his list in this city. Leila was unfamiliar with the roads and streets here, since she spent her life growing up in Russia – the place where both of them had met and befriended each other. In some part of him, he was both glad and grateful for her appearance. She felt just like a little sister to him, and he would never forget that she was the one whom saved his life and took him in back then. Even though her circumstances were not going smoothly for her, she still provided him the basic food and shelter. Only Leila had believed his tale about the other ‘him’ residing in his mind and body. The other research scientist experts held no trust in his words at all – he could not blame them, since after undergoing numerous tests and checks, there was absolutely no scientific evidence to explain his current condition.

He finally found her straying at the side of the road, and hurried over to her direction. She looked flustered and shocked, seemingly searching for a person. Was it this reason that she had rushed out of the restaurant without a word earlier on?

“Myolie…” Ron went over and checked on her – it made his heart sink as he saw the tears in her eyes. “Is there anything wrong?”

Myolie realized that she had almost forgotten about Ron when she ran out. Feeling apologetic and guilty, she shook her head in silence, before hastily wiping off the tears which were threatening to fall any time.

“It’s okay. If you’ve any problem, you can talk to me about it.” Ron stepped closer as he held onto her arms to give her some assurance and support.

Myolie looked deeply into his eyes – they were filled with kindness and sincere care. How could she tell him about seeing Raymond again, since she herself was unsure if it was all but a hallucination only? Not being able to find Raymond had already made her truly miserable. She did not need another person to share the misery with her now.

“No…nothing…” Myolie said. “I just thought I saw……an old friend.”

“Okay…” Ron nodded his head as he tried to study Myolie’s expression – his cop instinct was urging him that she was still hiding something from him, but he tried his best to brush away that thought. He should trust Myolie completely as her boyfriend. “So where’s your friend?”

Myolie paused for a pretty long moment before giving Ron a forced, faint smile, “I guess it was just a mistaken identity.”

Ron removed his hands from her arms, before reaching down to hold onto one of her hands. “Come on, dinner’s still waiting for us.”

Myolie was reluctant to give up just as yet. Her eyes scanned around the surroundings, but there was no sight of the man she had been yearning to see again for the past few years – someone whom was supposedly dead, but had returned to life.

“Ron, I’m sorry.” Myolie whispered. “I’m kind of tired. Can you see me home instead?”

Ron gave her hand a little squeeze as he smiled, “Sure, then we shall head home now.”

Ron had never rejected any of her requests before – not in the past, not now, and never in the future. He wanted her to know that she was forever his top priority, and that her happiness was his as well. All along, Ron had wished that he could be the one to make Myolie smile from the bottom of her heart, but after his best friend was gone, he started to realize that he would never be able to replace Raymond’s place in Myolie’s heart. Even so, he saw it as his responsibility to take care of her well even if she could not love him whole-heartedly.

[Abandoned Factory]

Gripping tightly onto a nylon rope, his veins and muscles on his arms were seen all bulging out in an unsightly manner. His face was glowing to an intense red as he felt his temperature rising beyond what a normal human being could actually take. And then, his body started contracting into an irregular shape, as if the bone structure within had defied all science logic and theories to evolve into a more powerful weapon…of destruction.

“You can’t win this fight…” The man growled as his blood-shot eyes revealed sinisterness and chilliness, before turning back to a normal almond-brown color, and in an instant, it changed back to red. “Surrender!”

After several minutes, his ragged, rapid breathing started to become normal again. Flinging off the nylon rope which had become badly-charred, he took a few steps forward, before the moonlight shone upon his face, and the reflection on a broken glass window panel revealed his hideous, mutated features. The figure began examining his new body for the first time – it was finally a successful transformation without any more hitches. At last, he had managed to completely subdue his supposed master and took over his senses and everything. Now, he could hear the whimpering moans of his master in his mind – a dumb and naïve human being whom was so easily manipulated and tempted by his sweet-talks for the past four years. After all, it was because of him that this mental patient was able to have a new leash of life, and enjoy the luxuries and fame as a renowned research scientist in this society today.

“Sammul Chan…the savior of mankind – this identity and title should belong to me instead.” He snarled in disgust at his own reflection – which now signified the original owner of this body, but now reduced to only a victim being held captive under this creature’s absolute control.

He sniffed around his surroundings. The new environment was keeping his level of curiosity pretty high. Transforming back into the human form at ease, he set out from the abandoned hut, feeling refreshed and energized. Prowling into the forest which was located not far away from the abandoned hut, he seemed to have picked up a strong scent which sent his tying knots in his stomach. Moving with agility and wariness, he stopped dead in his track after he caught sight of an old man plucking some plants in the middle of this forest. What an odd timing, he thought, but no sooner than that, an evil grin appeared across his face.

He was hungry – extremely famished. And he too knew that no human food could satisfy this hunger pang.

Despite being over seventy, the old man’s hearing was still pretty strong as he heard subtle noises behind his back. Goosebumps were forming on both of his arms as he felt the chilling wind blowing against his back. As he slowly turned around, his hand suddenly clutched tightly onto his wooden walking stick, and his body trembled with fright and shock.

“Mon-…ster…” He shrieked out in a soft voice before his neck was being twisted to an odd angle, and then devoured hungrily by the creature.

[Berry’s Avenue]

Ron pulled his car to a stop before Myolie’s bungalow. It was a huge house, but she had been living alone in it since she moved to this place two years ago. He remembered suggesting living with her, but she told him that she needed some private space.

“Thanks.” Myolie smiled at her, before opening the door and alighted from the vehicle.

Ron did likewise too, and he walked Myolie to the main entrance of the bungalow.

“Myo…” Ron called out.

“Yes?” She stopped and turned to look at him.

Deeply captivated by the innocence and beauty in her eyes, he could not resist the urge to transform that temptation into a full-blown kiss on her alluring lips. Ron took in a deep breath as he momentarily forced his gaze on somewhere else – even as a dating couple now, they seldom shared many intimate moments together. He was afraid that he would make her feel uncomfortable and uneasy. In fact, he found himself to be frightened of so many things that would eventually make Myolie dislike him instead.

“Ronnie?” Myolie reached out to touch on his hand.

Ron snapped out from his thoughts immediately, and smiled at her – he had always loved it when she called his pet name. “I just want you to know that I’ll always be by your side whenever you need me.” Ron’s hand then in turn gently held onto her hand.

Myolie knew that it was her good fortune to have such a boyfriend whom always believed in giving, rather than taking. She began wondering when she had ever given him happiness instead, but nothing came to her mind. “And I’ll definitely be by your side if you need me too.” Myolie finally said, trying to conceal her guiltiness – at least she felt that this was a promise she could still stand true to no matter what would happen in the future.

“Is it possible not to have any secrets between both of us?” Ron requested hesitantly – he knew that it was a difficult demand from him, but he still stated it anyway. He wanted to know her response.

Myolie blinked hard. Was he trying to drop hints about tonight’s sudden change of events? Should she tell him what she had seen back there at the restaurant? He should know about it, she thought, but a part of herself did not want the truth about her wishful thinking of Raymond returning to life being exposed to anyone, especially Ron.

“I…eh…” Myolie stammered. “I’m just wondering……what if…Raymond isn’t dead…?”

Ron stared at her, seemingly trying to grasp the meaning of her words.

“Why do you think so, Myo?” He questioned.

She swallowed down hard before revealing, “Because I saw him.” And she added on after a short pause, “I’m almost certain that it’s Raymond, Ron.”

“Okay…” Ron nodded his head although he looked as if he was still trying to digest Myolie’s words. “Perhaps I should try to deploy some officers to patrol around the area for his whereabouts, if that’s what you want.”

“No, I don’t mean that.” Myolie immediately jumped in. “I was just……”

Ron suddenly let go of Myolie’s hand as he quickly led her to the doorstep.

“You know what, it’s getting late already. You should have an early sleep tonight.” Ron spoke hastily. “I need to get going as well. There are some loose ends in the station I need to finish tonight. I’ll call you tomorrow morning, okay?” With that, Ron planted a light peck on Myolie’s cheek before hurrying off into his car.

Myolie had seen Ron’s worried and uneasy expression earlier on. Was it because of her words that made him feel insecure suddenly?

She began to hate herself – for harboring hope over the impossible, for being so weak and useless, for hurting Ron’s feelings……but most importantly, for her love for Raymond so deep that she wished that she could just drop dead on the spot and join him in the other world.

How she hated herself so much.

[FBI Headquarters]

He stopped before a huge metal door, before lifting up the cover of a small machine located at the side. The machine scanned his thumbprint, and the green light began flashing, prompting for the retinal scan next. Placing his face nearer towards the machine, he waited for a few seconds before there was finally a response.

“Special Agent Ron Ng, you may enter.” A voice from the machine spoke out after confirming his identity, and the huge metal door slowly opened to let Ron into one of the most top-secret and confidential libraries of the FBI in New York City.

It was a strict rule for all those whom entered into this place to remove any electronic devices on them, as this was to prevent any attempt of leakage of information or news out of this place. The place was virtually empty, except for a few other agents – most of them were of a higher rank than him. Security cameras were everywhere, and the library was heavily-guarded on the outside as well. This came to show how important and classified the information data and document records were over here. In fact, it stored all the data and records of the top-wanted and highly-dangerous criminals in the world. Stopping before a computer, Ron grabbed a seat before logging in into the system. He paused for a moment at the search engine displayed on the main page on the computer screen. Taking in a deep breath, he swiftly started typing on the keyboard, before pressing on the ‘Enter’ button. Within a few seconds, what he had searched for popped up on the screen.

Raymond Lam Fung
Missing since 2003 – Last appeared in New Orleans
Highly-wanted Suspect
Dangers – Confirmed to be infected with an unknown, deadly virus; Ordinary weapons are of no harm to the suspect
Officer-in-charge – Damien Lau

Ron had always known that Raymond was not dead after he stumbled upon his file in this library shortly after the experimental failure incident. Apparently, the Forensic Department of FBI had discovered that both the mental patient and Raymond might still be alive, but had disappeared mysteriously. Judging from the explosion scene described by witnesses, everyone including Ron had thought that there was no chance of survival for both of them, but the fact that they were still alive only meant that there must be something wrong in both men. Since then, they were being highly-wanted, fearing that the experiment might have some adverse effects upon their mechanisms, and in turn, be a threat to the society. This was also the reason why Ron had strongly supported Myolie in moving out of New Orleans – he feared that Raymond might return to that place one day; he feared that it might not be the same Raymond whom both of them had known.

Ron had clearly remembered spending much time and effort on tracking down the whereabouts of the mental patient. Right after he had known both men were still alive, his superior had given him the task of finding the mental patient out. Ron had some important leads on his hands, and managed to trace out that the mental patient had undergone a major plastic surgery operation in Texas. But unfortunately, the clinic which the mental patient had suspected to be frequenting had been burned down, and the doctor’s corpse was completely charred. No evidences were being left behind, and all leads were being cut off. However, there was a rather strange discovery being made though by the coroner – part of the doctor’s facial skin had been surgically removed.

Ron contemplated for a long while, before clicking onto the officer’s name, which linked him to another page. Recalling Myolie’s words, he knew that she had no reason to lie to him. She had indeed seen Raymond right here in New York City.

He finally decided to report this matter to Damien Lau.

It was his job.
